Review: It has been a seriously long while since we saw dubstep in such a strong position, with an incredible selection of newcomers making their way to the forefront and a number of the old guard continuing to up the levels. This latest single drop from the team at Sentry sees three powerhouses in Abstrakt Sonance, Substance and Pushloop come together for a grimey roller on an official 'Smoking Blunts' remix. Pushloop gives this one a seriously gritty edge, using stunning horn stabs and warbling metallic bass stabs in a perfect call and response motion. This one will most certainly be lighting up dances up and down the country.

Review: Flinging double negatives like a clown hurls custard pies, AC Slater builds on Night Bass's generous debut release with his second full-fat EP of the year. With a sound and attitude that's been cemented into the bass scene psyche for a decade, you know what to expect from him: BS-free floor-fire with added humour... And that's exactly what we get. "The Chirp" is a Dirtybird-level jacker, "Skywalker OG" taps deeper into the classic house roots with an air of late 90s Van Helden, "Waterverb" flips the trap bird before dropping into some seriously silky 4/4 wobble while "Not No Love Song" vibes with classic rave synths and a speed garage style drop that's not, not, amazing.

Review: Bringing a measured kind of juke menace to the 50 Weapons camp, regular attraction Addison Groove this time links up with fellow Bristol bass maven Sam Binga for some short and snappy cuts that explore diverse corners of electronica while all riding that hyped-up tempo. "Rzor" keeps things strictly rhythmic with its rush of 808 beats moving through pitch tweaks and rubbing up against found sound percussion. "Thr3id" gets twisted up in melodic stabs and the kind of gnarly acid spits you might find on Drukqs-era Aphex, bouncing off steady central motifs in order to fire off as many drum machine samples as possible in a three minute time frame. "11th" is even further into deploying intricate melodic darts that zip through the rapid fire beats, delicate chimes offset by dreamy synths and stuttering samples. "Ol Man EK" whips all these feelings up into a perfect summation track, capturing the bittersweet-ness of early jungle and vintage deep house in amongst a positively futuristic flurry of percussion.

Review: Straight out of the dubbed out streets of Manchester, we are pleased to welcome Hypho and Amadeo Sanchez's new project 'Manuka' as they unveil their debut four track drop. We kick off with new school dubstep high flyer: Arkwright, with his shimmering roller in 'Course', before dipping into Kelly Dean's dungeon dwelling demon in 'Childs Play', which is packed to the rafters with reesey energy and grizzly subs over skippy 4x4 infused beats. Next, Sensei brings some more original flavour as the gritty bass tones of 'Red Cross' run riot, along with the wobbly moogish bass designs of Zygos on 'Paz', rounding off a fantastic debut release.

Review: Three despatches from the outer limits of the jazz spectrum make up an EP that defies easy categorisation. As One's 'Elsewhere' is up first, and comes on like a free jazz excusion underpinned by the intriguing combination of a live double bass line and an almost jungle tempo breakbeat. As One are then back again to take on Sensurreal's 'NewBrandDesign', which again has Reece/Bukem-ish drums but married in this instance to long, lingering pads, disco stabs, shimmering keys and more. And then there's Jedi Knights' 'Solina', again remixed by As One into a head-fried slice that draws on Detroit techno for inspiration. An interesting package that rewards repeat listening.

Review: The Northside crew have put together a very excited pair of rollers here as Avaword, Slimy Ape & Grundy join forces to unleash a truly vibrant two-tracker. First up, 'Stomach Ache', sees the crew combine for a dubstep infused bubbler, with Avawords gunfinger-inducing vocal display playing the central roll, amidst a gritty 140 instrumental display, jam-packed with gnarly bass tones and hard hitting snare smacks to match. From here, Hayz arrives to unleash his remix, taking that Avaword vocal and somehow upping the intensity, stripping back the drums and focussing on an even more hard hitting bassline. Awesome stuff!

Review: The Main Course imprint ain't messing about with this their instalment of the Big Plates series. The usual suspects are involved, starting with Big Makk and the militant bass gunshot that is "Tabasco Sawse", followed hastily by the UK-laden, pseudo techno of "Spooky Hallway" from Sven Lochenhoer. Lux Groove offers a percussive feeding frenzy with the hard-hitting house slicer named "Keep Rockin", GAWP's "Vanilla Gorilla" is a bubbly tech-house slinger, and "Music Is Drohgz Too" by Jai Biotic manages to create a total hybrid from the best parts of house and dubstep wobble. Pull up!

Review: So what do we have here, we ask ourselves as we unwrap this tasty looking selection from Blackpocket and Steve Spacek, courtesy of the legendary Exit imprint. What we in fact have is a perfect example of soundscaping at its finest, kicking off with the aquatic drips of the title track 'ALAYLY', the stunning, lofi vocal work of 'Footsteps' and crunchy percussive leads of 'In Da Back Room'. Next up, the super trippy synth expanses of 'Organic Tech', followed by the electronic explosions of 'Sho U' alongside Fatima and the smooth soulful harmonies of 'Wake Up Feel Good'. We round this one up with a look at the 80's inspired drumwork and distant vocal presence of 'Worlds Together', polishing up an extremely interesting project from start to finish.

Review: Releasing music from the likes of Sinden, AC Slater, Jack Beats and Herve over the years, the Night Bass label out of the UK have worked with a who's-who of club music specialists. Both Blossom and Shdws have delivered on their own individual releases for Night Bass in the past with the label choosing a three-track collaborative split release as their return. Shdws' solo effort sees darker tones of 80s synthwave and vocals meet with warbling metallic bass lines, tech house drums and skipping rhythms. Teamed up with Blossom, the pair trip through a circus of synths, trippy vocals and out of shape rave to straight up dub and two step. Mind Games gonna make you trip.

Review: Bok Bok is back in action on his own label with this sprightly two-tracker featuring fresh-faced collaborator Sweyn Jupiter who is making a debut appearance on this record. The "Club Mix" of "Papaya Lipgloss" is a plush affair that revels in the sweetest chimes of melody that linger in mid-air surrounded by a pleasantly sleek rhythm section. It's a joyous affair that keeps an upbeat mood without reaching over into banality, instead letting subtle but impressive flairs of production shine through in the simple surroundings. The "Sour Mix" doesn't actually loose any of that sweetness, but rather deploys it in a more staggered, playful mix that revels in more broken drum patterns and dramatic pauses.

Review: A year after their last V/A EP, Boxed let rip with another future-fired session that leaves no under illusion what this multi-crew collective are capable of. Boylan & Oilgang set the record straight with a brutal slab of pulverising alien bass before Rebore dusts of his string quartet and gets busy over a rifle-style breakbeat that's not often exploited in grime. Elsewhere Slackk and Logos take us deep into the swampy jungle with an unnerving set of synth tones before flipping us skyward with an elastic bassline that comes from nowhere while Fallow shuts us down with a mighty slice of gun-toting grime drama. Brutal through and through; it's time to think inside the Boxed once again.

Review: More Time and R&S linking up is always going to lead to something fantastic, and this latest four track selection is just that, as we firstly kick off the project with some incredibly vibrant drum work and percussive brilliance from Ahadadream on 'Melty'. Next, Bala Bala Boyz rise to the occasion with more high energy drum chops and vocal lines on 'Sieta' before Bryte brings the grooves with the irresistible switch ups of 'Ice Cream'. Finally, 'Bleep Test' lands from SNOW, putting a final touch of rhythmic bliss onto what we can safely say is an excellent body of work.

Review: Today we are here to take a look at some seriously smooth newschool footwork production as we welcome BSN Posse & Sideswipe back to the Modern Ruin release schedule. They arrive on the scene with five original bangers, kicking off with the steadily progressing chord structures of 'Stratus', which move smoothly into the junglistic drum twists and R&G style vocal slices of 'Slow It Down'. Next, we enter the luxurious orchestral sampling of 'Blue Sky' before the more classic Jersey Club production style of 'Bones' appears on the scene. Finally, 'Southbound' finishes the project with a touch of subby goodness, packed with intelligent vocal dips and sharp drum work as ever.

Review: London's Modern Ruin hadn't been messing around since their first release, and now the label are back with a hot collaboration between Slime's BSN Posse, and newcomer Stayhigh in what could possibly be one of the label's most soulful and seductive slice of bass weight, as of yet. The opener by BSN Posse, "All My Dreams" is a gorgeous bit of sliding drums and placid vocals, and the follower by Stayhigh, "You're Not Alone", follows in a similar vein except there is more energy and more of a rise in momentum. Check all these cuts out; the moral of the story is that these guys are just simply good at making sidewalk bass music with an elegant, maybe eve jazzy edge.

Review: The day-glo synths come ripping out of Bwana's studio like there's no tomorrow on "It Ain't Done Til It's Over", pausing only for some powerful woodblock hits to echo at the end of each bar. Otherwise the details and delirium gets piled on in hefty measure on each track from the fresh-faced producer, keeping things melodic and meaningful in every shifting segment. XI turns out an interesting remix that slows the 2-step shuffle right down and bolsters it with haunting and contrasting synth parts. Jack Dixon opts for a more linear house take that still manages to straddle the contemporary hybrid juncture of electronic music.

Review: The Brotherhood Sound System released two heavy bass swelters back in 2014 and, since then, only another appearance was made in 2016, which leaves this new collaborative effort to give us a little view as to what they might be up to next. There's a whole bunch of new faxes here, and Callahan's "Kudzu" sets the scene nicely with a bit of minimalistic tribal drumming, which is followed by the glitchy, sparse two-steps of "Eastern Shores" by Silas & Snare. A:Tonal's "Perfect Imbalance" is the master-stroke on here, a fluttering wave of percussion and hissing sonics, but SYZ and LKY's beat thrashings should not go overlooked. In fact, this whole EP feels truly collaborative, linked-up by a recurrent pattern of thought which is sublimely executed from start to finish.
