Review: Escapology is Kode9's soundtrack album to the 'sonic fiction' Astro-Darien, which will be released later in the year on Hyperdub's sub-label Flatlines. The project began in 2021 as a two week audiovisual installation at Corsica Studios in London, utilising a multi-channel installation of the 50 speaker Acousmonium, courtesy of Paris' INA-GRM, and incorporating "off-world atmospheres into slices of high definition, asymmetric club rhythms, woven through thrilling sound design and vertiginous sonics." From the intoxicating, polyrhythmic sound design of "The Break Up" to the deconstruction of club music on "Torus" being just some examples, the Hyperdub chief has finally brought forth his follow up long-player to 2015's Nothing - and it is certainly worth the wait.

Review: The long-awaited solo LP from US-based soulful bass music producer Kastle has been the talk of music blogs around the world for months. Now its finally made it to a full release , there's something of a feeling of satisfaction that can be heard in each track. Whether that's projected by the listener or not might be hard to prove, but there's a definite positive energy that flows through everything Kastle produces. From the garage beats of "Been A While" and "Red Light" to the irresistibly hip house groove of "Insatiable" and trap-hop crush of "Death From Above", it's clear that versatility is what this album is all about. Clean, crisp production matched to soulful, blissed-out dance music that's unashamedly fashionable yet different enough to be taken seriously. An album of 2013 no doubt.

Review: Kelela's Hallucinogen isn't technically a new release. In truth, all of these tunes have been out already on Warp; the first part of the release featured all the original cuts while the second focused solely on remixes. However, there's just something right about releasing them together under one roof...the timing of this thing is just right given the artist's recent touring schedule. Her style is what we would call 'SDM', or 'Seductive Dance Music', which basically means a gorgeous blend of electronica and r&b vocalism, all tied together by that unmistakable Warp charm. Fans of artists like Throwing Shade will appreciate tunes like "A Message" or "Rewind", not to mention other pearls like the lead tune "Hallucinogens". The remixes all offer different and equally enticing.

Review: The concepts on Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's ninth studio album Let's Turn It Into Sound have to do with perception, expression and communication. Over three months, the American producer recorded alone in her home studio, pursuing new experiments across her usual toolkit of modular, analogue and vintage synthesizers, in addition to orchestral sounds and vocals. From her contorted takes on pop electronica as heard on tracks like "Have You Felt Lately" or on the deep and off-kilter groove of Is "It Me Or Is It You?" among others, Let's Turn It Into Sound is an impressive display of musical capability throughout.

Review: The big, bad Kode9 makes a much awaited return to his own Hyperdub stable with a new album, and that is exactly what we were wanting to hear from the one of the founding fathers of contemporary UK bass music. His explorative style is perfectly suited to the album format, and "Zero Point Energy" is the perfect opener to a stunning sequence of events - large folds of bass deconstruct over sci-fi sonics and sink into the pensive melodic flux of tunes like "Notel", and "Void". There is also plenty of beat-laden material here, so don't worry, and "Holo" even ventures into a bit of jump-up juke, but there's no point trying to dissect Kode9's music; the album is all made up of hybrid tunes, and it's exactly the sort of music that pushes boundaries further and genres to their very edges. Quality, of course.

Review: Introducing KUCKA! A hotly tipped, fresh and new artist to emerge in full debut form via LuckyMe. A Liverpool born vocalist and producer now residing in Australia - explaining something of her connection to the Future Classic label and Dro Carey - she now drops her first studio album. Synth heavy, bass inspired and vocal driven, Wrestling is certainly connected to a world of postmodern new age pop! A prime example being the '90s R&B motifs in "Afterparty" alongside deeper dancefloor connections in tracks like "Joyride" and "No Good For Me". Threading the album with a sequence of futuristic pop and fusion crossover in tracks like "Real", "Drowning" and "Ascension", KUCKA's debut, Wrestling, wins hands down.

Review: Dubstep albums, when done correctly, can be a real thing of infinite beauty, traversing a range of influences and styles to bring life to some truly beautiful ideals. We feel that is exactly what Khromi has done here as the 'Traveller In A Strange World' EP is released, courtesy of Dank N Dirty Dubz. From the airy scattered tones of 'Floating' and 'Mango Juice' to the skippy drum work and wild synthesizers of 'Last Q', this one is all about its variability, taking the form of a living, breathing being. The stunning brass reverberations of 'Circula' and crunchy drum work of 'Hemp' also plays into this, with some stunning remix work being provided by Liquid Memoirs and Demure later down the line.

Review: Klasey Jones' much anticipated return to Plastician's Terrorhythm lands in the shape of "Eleven". Said to be influenced by the TV series Stranger Things and other synth soundtracks of the '80s, Klasey's unmistakable style bleeds through 11 tracks tinged with his trademark fusion of deep southern rap production and cinematic ambiences. We particularly enjoyed the deeply emotive future trap of Until Dawn, the sci-fi R'n'B of Heart Of Gold and the Autonomic sounding half time drum and bass of Nebula Empire among others on here. Just two projects into the mystical young producer's discography, Klasey Jones turns out yet again with a truly original and forward-thinking piece that will stay in heavy rotation for years to come.

Review: The inimitable SVBKVLT is one of the only labels out there that is making grime music as it should be heard; none of this pseudo bass and quasi house, just the real gear aimed at getting your head nodding up and down in the car - shotgun, preferably. Kai Luen is a newcomer to the scene, but we're sure that we'll be hearing him soon and often given how masterful his skills on the mixing desk seem to be with these ten stone-cold killers. "The Hollow Ghost" itself contains all the elements of classic grime joints by the likes of Plastician, while others like "LA 92" or strive down headier paths, sometimes landing on hints of hip-hop or Burial-like percussion excursions. The real shit.

Review: A name long associated with the Hyperboloid platform thanks to releases like Back On Track (2016), Next Mutation (2013) and Bulletproof (2012), Koloah is granted his debut album in 2021 with Millennium Sun. With swathes of uplifting, ambient synth inspiring the ears in tracks like "Hope" the LP dives through more cutting drum and bass in "Urban Ninja" next to staccato synth experimentalisms in "Angles City" - some may think Roly Porter. There's also floating technicolour cut ups of twinkling trance and syncopated beats in "Android Love" alongside music fit for and anime soundtrack in "New Earth Born". An album that dives into experimental drum and bass as much as it does '90s IDM and beatless race to new future club music and dub.

Review: It's time to explore the unexpected here as we jump head first into the latest selections from the Colony team who unveil a very weighty full length project from K.L.O. The project is absolutely stacked with collaborative energies for starters, with exciting features including the likes of Kursa, Lone Drum and Osmetic. Our favourites across the whole project have to include the super syncopated hip hop flavours of 'Lamp Sandwich', alongside the demonic synthesizer slaps of 'Avant Parred' and eerie melodic twists of 'Yo Eye Right Now'. We would thoroughly recommend letting this one roll out on long play!

Review: The third full-length album from Steve Goodman comes weighted by the untimely passing of his long time sparring partner Stephen 'Spaceape' Gordon, marking the first time he has flown solo on a long player. Stylistically the production reaches out into many of the spaces you might expect of the Hyperdub label boss in this day and age, from rapid-fire threads of footwork to hyper-modern house mutations, but by and large the clean, crisp and angular flair that embodies the Kode9 sound is still very much intact. At times the sparse concept behind Nothing can feel positively unsettling, as on the eerie "Zero Work", but there is still plenty of room for the playful lead lines that shed light into Goodman's brooding sound world.

Review: Commonly found hanging around on Sewer Tapes, Karmelloz is now on 1080p with his lush and varied electronica styles, largely existing in a downtempo headspace but not afraid to embrace a beat in the right situation. "Indian Architecture" is a wondrous ambient piece with its flute stabs and swirling pads, while "Nasa Boyz" comes on like the kind of disheveled house you might find on Workshop. "Squiggles" may boast a sturdy kick but it's a decidedly mellow affair, but it's still far more structured than the floatation tank bliss out of "Stranded From Pod". With a confident embrace of textures and a keen ear for adventurous melodies, you could do far worse than submit yourself to the headphone-ready delights of Source Localization.

Review: Footwork junkie Kesmo is a bit of a badman when it comes to constructing heavy waves of wayward juke music and, as surprising as it may seem, this is only his second release to date and the dude is already on an LP flex! Brainfoot is the best LP of the week in our charts. Yes, that is an old statement, but we wouldn't say it if it weren't absolutely true; from start to finish, this is easily the finest slice of bass that you're likely to find or there. Let's be honest, if you kick off with a tune like "Footure", a breaks-ridden, jungle-curbing anthem for the heads, you can only go up and up. And, that's exactly what happens here. For fans of Night Slugs et al...
