Up The Place EP
1
Up The Place - (4:29) 80 BPM
Review: The 1985 team have consistently delivered a top notch array of both neurotic D&B flavours and lethal dubstep collections, with this latest offering from Cesco being another great addition to their 140 arm. First up, 'GITP', is an anthemic opener, taking a super catchy vocal line and layering it with silky synthetic magic, before Bidl joins the party on 'Overdue', a behemoth-like bounce through gnarly reeses and fragrant low ends. Next, a more juke-inspired switch up as 'Up The Place' unloads high energy drum rolls and more vocal slices, before Hamdi touches down for a ferocious collaboration in 'Swing King', a final bulbous barge to close things off in style.

Client_03 - "IntrospectionDecimator" - (4:44) 84 BPM
Rohaan - "Naananaana" - (3:04) 86 BPM
Review: Long live team Alpha Pup, an excellently organised project that have moved onto the third edition of their epic '20/20' compilation series, exploring the most lethal reaches of underground bass music. Featuring hard hitting originals from the likes of Ivy Lab, Dismantle, Rocks FOE, Bakey and more, it's clear that the team have gone all out on this collection, with sounds ranging as wide as the hardcore inspired mysticism of 'Naananaana' from Rohaan, to the industrial techno-flavours of Ila Brugal's 'Cynical'. The whole project packs a punch, but our highlights would have to include both the intense metallic madness of Deft's 'OKURTHEEXPERT', alongside Manni Dee's monstrous 'Wet Slide' creation. Top work all around!

Creepin' - (3:23) 85 BPM
Review: Well hello there Shades, it's been a while... Understandable, really, considering both Perez and Eprom's solo careers. And considering the insane levels of production at play. Weirded-out vibes and twisted designs like this don't appear from nowhere - these guys are pushing each other to the limit here. It's clear from the updated version of their 2015 entry track "Chiron" as the textures are even more unique and the bass even more sabre-toothed. Elsewhere "Sleaze" is a gritty, oily, 23rd century robot porn-flick soundtrack, "Creeper" is the sound of machine revolting in harmony while "K.S.P" takes all those dangerous, loin-girding sounds that first scared the dickens out of you when you first heard jungle as a kid and turbo-charges them with 21st century evil. Outstanding and untouchable.

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: Exit records OG Fixate finds himself back in the house once again with this four-track Confusion EP. Turning in three solo numbers and the one collab with the rarely seen Greazus, Fixate looks to tribal percussion, spaciously warped beats and atmospheric drum and bass languages across his three solo originals. "Confusion" is the highlight most will gravitate too - perhaps appealing to a Livity Sound inspired listener through its percussive and UK bass elements. "Scotch Bonnet" sees stuttered and falling drums disintegrate into a whirlpool of deconstructed bass only to reform as an easy-going, dreamy house loop. For the real Fixate steppers look to "Dawn Chorus" to get the heads nodding, alongside "Elbow Room" with its spooked-out melody line and straight up future drum and bass repute!

Review: Jungle, rave and hardcore crossover for the ages has arrived on Exit like its 2006 all over again thanks to Shaun Lodestar's HomeSick project and this 1000dB Stare mini LP. Arriving on the legendary Exit label it finds a most appropriate home, taking listeners through a roller coaster of dark yet uptempo and old school referential UK and US rave inspired sounds - with touches of baile funk and electro next to acid, even fidget house and experimental drum and bass peppered throughout. And as the artist says of the record: this release is the result of six years writing break-heavy dance music. Time to celebrate.

Review: The real deal out of Chicago and embedded within the footwork elite - for real - DJ Manny crosses the Atlantic to drastic effect once more by arriving with an exceedingly fine album for Planet Mu. There's something unexplainable about this work, and perhaps a fitting word is substance, but it doesn't take long to realise that Signals In My Head will be something special to appreciate in the years to come. With such a deep, eclectic and inspiring sound, Manny himself expresses that Signals In My Head was a push to, "do something that nobody (in Footwork) had ever done before which is an R&B love type of album but still keeping it footwork, juke, house, techno, with a few breaks.". Heavy where it needs to be, full of soul and a touch of edge - true heads this is for you. Undeniable and super inspiring sounds.

Self Couscous - (5:07) 84 BPM
Review: Pressure Dome's Yussh gets busy with her debut EP on Wisdom Teeth. Flexing fully across four tracks, her signature fusion of breakbeat, bass, jungle and club hits the spot in true Bristol brutalist fashion. 'Look Mum No Hands' eases us in with a dreamy, spacious halftime trip while the recent single 'Same Same' continues to keep the subtle sense of chill with its floating chords and slinky percussion. Elsewhere 'Close Fall' sounds like it could have come from the desk of Kid Drama and dBridge's Autonomic HQ while 'Self Conscious' closes on a deep space cosmic jungle/techno hybrid. No hands, no fear.

Review: Since their label inception back in 2018, the team over at Wisdom Teeth have done a great job at both cultivating and innovative forward thinking electronic music, with their roster featuring a number of true veterans of the game. This latest compilation takes the title 'Club Moss' and sees them assemble 14 fiery original creations, featuring the likes of Facta, K-Lone, Maya Q, LUXE, Purelink and more, all of whomst deliver naught but quality in their chosen creations. For us, despite this being a longer project, there are two clear standout recordings, the first of which is of course Cousin's atmospheric drifter in 'Tooth 4 Tooth' which gives us a spacious, exploratory feel. Alongside this, the moogy sub bounces of Tammo Hesselink's 'Cupboard Cylinder Salon' original also tops the list for us, showcasing the variation of styles that sits within the Wisdom Teeth camp.

Overexciting (feat Genoveva - original mix) - (3:49) 86 BPM

Review: Marking a new era for DNO Records, PLLFRY introduces the Overexciting EP, a five-track release brimming with raucous halftime beats and collaborations with vocalists NST and Genoveva. Thriving on iron-clad percussion and a blend of mangled sonic futurism, yet it consistently centred around a powerful, unfiltered bass presence - tracks like "Demolition" and "Collapse Of The System" live up to their names, delivering destructive basslines and chaotic beats that shatter the norm. The title track showcases a nuanced contrast, with a serpent-like bassline, ethereal vocals from Genoveva, and intricate hi-hats. "Water Fire" takes the intensity further with an undulating low-end, metallic melodies, and a slippery vocal contribution from NST. The bonus track "Old School" pays homage to hip-hop's golden age, infusing a boom bap beat with machine glitches and acid pellets. DNO knows.

Doctor Jeep & Tamarak - "Destroyer" - (5:22) 85 BPM
Review: Longtime friend of Worst Behavior, Doctor Jeep, drops the electrifying "Deep Red" EP, showcasing his signature versatility and collaborative spirit. This NYC-based producer, known for his dancefloor-igniting beats and genre-bending explorations, delivers a diverse sonic journey across four tracks. "Deep Red" kicks things off with the infectious title track, a collaboration with UK artist Grove. Grove's punk-infused energy and appreciation for soundsystem culture merge seamlessly with Doctor Jeep's production prowess, resulting in a head-turning banger. Further collaborations unfold with Australian producer Hedchef, known for his off-kilter club constructions. "I'm Rushing" blends breakbeat rave energy with a futuristic twist, guaranteed to keep bodies moving with its rolling grooves and wonky basslines. In "Hammerhead," Doctor Jeep pays homage to his Brazilian heritage by weaving Brazilian vocals with electro elements and a sparse, heavy beat reminiscent of club and grime influences. Next, Doctor Jeep delves into halftime territory with "Destroyer," a collaboration with Canadian producer Tamarak. The track builds slowly and deliberately, layering intricate techy breaks and percussion over a minimal soundscape. To close this EP, "Deep Red," receives a dubstep makeover courtesy of J:Kenzo. This high-energy remix transforms the original into a driving jungle and drum & bass beast. A genre-bending cracker here!

Hyroglifics - "Albany Road" - (3:17) 87 BPM
Review: As you can imagine, Hyroglifics landing on Critical Music for a full three track display is always going to cause somewhat of a ruckus. This collection is a perfect example of understanding the room as the chiming vocal repetition and tweaking 140 synthetics of 'Sing To It' open us up with a fiery feeling of originality. From here, Deft arrives for a slightly quicker paced episode as the crunching synthesiser pounds and the bubbling subs of 'Two For Two' give us another gutpunching original. Finally, we skip back into the 170's with 'Albany Road', a synthetic slapper, switching and alternating between gnarly bass textures and well processed drum punches, giving us the perfect closer to this already intense collection.

Alix Perez - "Ghosts" - (4:08) 86 BPM
Alix Perez - "Crush" - (3:51) 85 BPM
Review: We love the way Alix Perez has branched out in recent years. While we used to associate him to the minimal d&b wave that spawned in the late 00s, he's begun to venture onto into more diverse territories, as of late. He's up on his own 1985 Music here, and "Ghosts" is exactly the sort of glitchy, pseudo hip hop sketch that we now expect from the guy, but the real heat comes from "Hack & Slash", a total hybrid tune that goes from juke to dubstep, and back to something we're not really sure how to label. But, this is exactly how experimentation works and how new genres are created, something which is also very audible from his collaboration tune with Taso, "'Andromeda". "Tempest" is perhaps the weirdest and most daring of the lot, and the tune where Perez's d&b roots really come out, whereas "Crush" is a swinging, London bullet rhythm, for the heads. All in all, a much recommended affair.

Review: Shades are a trans-Atlantic duo Alix Perez (Belgium/UK) and Eprom (USA) who deal in dark and messed up hip-hop. Their Better To Reign In Hell Than To Serve In Heaven record had the likes of XLR8 frothing at the mouth. They're keeping the vibes going here by releasing another stopgap jam, "Creepin" and it's all bad (in a good way). The track is a teaser from their much-anticipated forthcoming EP, Night the Dreadless Angel, and it's a banger - all creepy fuzzy distortion, heavy beats and speaker bustin' low end throbs. Bad has never sounded so good!

Archetype - (4:17) 85 BPM
Review: Yes, yes! London's Alix Perez calls upon Fracture to land this latest collaboration on his own 1985 Music which, in our eyes, is one of the only last remaining meccas for true-school d&b with a forward-leaning edge. "Archetype" unleashes its sharp bass lasers over a slow-shifting, broken nu-jungle groove that sits somewhere in the vast landscape between dubstep and d&b. The tune will work like a charm for all those jungle heads looking to add a little flavor and pace to their DJ sets. Master-blaster type gear!

Review: It's been almost ten years of Eprom music already, and it's about time that he was called up to Alix Perez's 1985 Music, an imprint which takes it upon itself to release the most wide-eyed forms of bass-heavy music known to man. This one-track killer, "Oksana", is a pleasure from the first beat touching down on the speakers. Spewing a hip-hop sensibility from all angles, and guided by a vicious, ringing bassline that screams to be plaid out at some absurdly high volumes. Propah gear.

Review: Based in Portland, futuristic bass music producer Eprom teams up with 1985 music for his brand new EP entitled 'Drone Warfare'. With early support from Mixmag, this EP takes a unique approach to underground electronic music in general, focussing on the unpredictability of industrial musical elements. The title track is a rollercoaster, with incredible layers of artistic sound design coupled with subtle rhythmic elements and creepy atmospherics. Next up 'Raw Data' takes a more hip hop approach with industrial percussion running wild. It gets even cooler with 'Oskana' which brings even more twisted synthesis to the table, leading perfectly into the syncopated genius of the final track 'Full Mag'.

Review: Bonjour! Monty finally delivers his debut artist album and it's an absolute gem from start to finish. Featuring the many cuts he's been teasing over the last few months ('Hardware', 'Vibin' etc) the album takes a deep dive into every sound on the young Frenchman's palette. Flexing from the gnarled 140 bubbles and bumps of 'Dreamer' (with 1985 bossman Alix Perez himself) and the spacey garage vibes of 'Walking Home' to the soulful roll of 'Birdland' (with fellow Toulousian Redeyes) and the electroid night creeping title track, this is the full Monty on levels we've never seen before. Bass music across the whole menu, it's one of those rare LPs that will both slay a club and work well in any other listening scenario. Bonsoir!

Review: When it comes to underground dance music, there are few outposts of creativity that are boasting as high a rate of success as Alix Perez's '1985'. We are blessed to take a look into a window of that creativity with this monstrous new collection of sonic sizzlers as Shades, Alix himself and Eprom join forces for the explosive 'From A Vein' album project. This is a true showcase of mastery in our eyes, from the sub-rattling drones of 'Into Stone' to the super electronic syncopation of 'As Wax By Seal' and acidic arpeggios of 'Deceitful Ways'. We are thrown in about 1000 different directions over the course of this 14 track masterclass, with our favourite creations having to include the remarkably chirpy 'Purification' alongside Gaslamp killer, exploring organic drum breaks and super digitised basslines, next to satanic melodic sweeps of 'Sub Noctem' and unpredictable metallic soundscapes of 'Immortals', welcoming MC GQ into the fold at the same time. Outstanding!

Shelter (Two Inch Punch remix) - (3:41) 85 BPM
Review: The second single to land ahead of Spectrasoul's highly-anticipated sophomore set The Mistress, "Shelter" emanates the duo's most sensitive, touching sides. Leaning heavily on a woozy half beat, full focus on placed on Lily's yearning, heart-torn vocals. D&B doesn't get any more emotional than this. Remix-wise Two Inch Punch lays down a darker, barbed beats twist with a treacle-thick slo-mo stomp while Spectrasoul themselves jump on the VIP with a 170 refix that's tailored for prime time floor flattening. The full package.
