I Don't Take Requests EP
1
Signal (Outro) - (1:08) 116 BPM
Review: Four40 have been known for their cultivation of talent since their inception, with this latest offering seeing the monstrous flavours of bullet tooth land for a much awaiting link up. Across these five tracks, we see exactly what bullet tooth is all about, with the moody sub pulses of 'Your Love' and crunching drum stutters of 'Immaculate Skank' giving us a truly vibrant experience. Killa P then touches down for a hard hitting vocal performance on the heavily syncopated slides of 'Brand New Day', followed by the pacey breaks-driven drum lines of 'Love Sensation'. Finally, we round off with a more subtle piece of soundscaping entitled 'Signal', bringing a touch of calm to bring this awesome debut drop to a close.

Glue EP

Metro - (5:00) 118 BPM
Review: The Glue EP by Irish power duo features two new tracks embodying the same dramatic and evocative vibes from their recent, highly acclaimed self titled album. The title track here unashamedly explores rave nostalgia, with its tough breakbeats, euphoric chord progressions and gated vocal samples taking you all the way back to '92. "Metro" uses phased acid house style drum patterns with roaring rave synth leads on this slow burning but heavily building dancefloor destroyer. Finally "DLR" soundtracks those divine moments of truth loved up in the chill-out tent, with this emotive ambient house cut with a nice tint of 303 acid for good measure that's reminiscent of classics by Orbital et al.

Bicep

Spring - (6:54) 118 BPM
Review: The long awaited, self titled debut album from Irish power duo Bicep is the perfect summation of their career to date. Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson have created a singular and unique album, founded on the blueprint of classic house, techno, electro and Italo disco: but all the time bearing their unique signature. The duo felt that UK institution Ninja Tune was a perfect fit for them and gave them the total freedom to express themselves artistically, describing the label's broad scope that has, in turn, helped them to thrive. They display a strong technicality and a desire to experiment, but still with a melodic touch which runs throughout the entire record. It is this approach to creativity which has allowed Bicep to establish a unique position in the industry, in the face of a crowded global dance stage.

Circled - (4:39) 118 BPM
Review: Over the years we have become very used to Om Unit supplying us with some of the most experimental musical creations out there. This brand new album entitled 'Acid Dub Stories' is the embodiment of that refusal to fall into line, with the tracklisting exploring electronic music production in a way we have never heard before. There is distinctly retro feel about the general arrangement of the project, from the moogy synthesizer action of 'Ghosts' and 'Bristol Theme' to the more spacious use of pad textures in 'Dissolved' and 'Celestial Envoy', It's impossible to define the project within any singular bracket, with it being best described as a masterpiece in digital sound design. Other highlights include the constantly alternating melodic structures of 'The Struggle' and the digital dubwise vibes of 'Circled'. Amazing work!

As The Sun Sets - (4:40) 112 BPM
Played by: Jimpster
Review: UK deep broken beat nu-jazz shenanigans from one very talented young producer named William Florelle with the Two & Three EP for Wot Not. First track "As The Sun Sets" is some jagged and soulful deepness that follows in the tradition on Kaidi Tatham, 4hero or Recloose. Other tracks "Next Time I'll Learn" or "Follow" are deeper R&B jams with sultry vocals accompanied by dusty blunted beats; but all rather evocative. Then there is some great remixes but we were particularly fond of K15's rather Detroit sounding remix of "Next Time I'll Learn" that had that real Theo Parrish or Rick Wilhite kinda vibe about it. Hotlanta's Stefan Ringer handing in a fairly nifty rendition of "Follow".

Bird Sound Power
14
Clunk - (4:32) 114 BPM
Review: Jamaica's Equiknoxx have spent the last decade re-inventing dancehall for the 21st century, delivering a swathe of releases that look further afield than Kingston for inspiration. Bird Sound Power is, somewhat surprisingly, their first appearance on vinyl, and sees them pop up on Demdike Stare's experimentally-minded DDS imprint. Featuring a mix of brand new cuts and previously released - but largely unknown - jams, it's a set that impresses with both its' rhythmic dexterity, and its' obvious inventiveness. Their 'riddims' veer from the punchy and rolling to the weird and out-there, with cute electronic flourishes, IDM influences, ambient chords and trill birdsong all adding to the humid, thrill-a-minute mood.

Out Of Pocket - (3:27) 112 BPM
Review: As an imprint, 1985 have always championed the weird and wonderful, which is why this fabulous new four track adventure from Tsuruda fits so perfectly. We begin our treacherous tale with 'Fugitive', which sees the man himself, Mr Alix Perez arrive on collaborative duty, supplying us with a truly magnificent journey through syncopated rhythm and synthetic action. Next, 'Kaioh' once again throws us wonky drum arrangements and other-worldy soundscaping, drawing us in with some fantastic compositional value, before the creeping melodic manoeuvres and grizzly low-ended writhes of 'Out Of Pocket' launch themselves forward. We then dive down a whole new hole of sonic depravity, as the gut-wrenching synth swipes of 'Migi' provide us with a suitably eye-opening outro. What a project it is!

Layer 6 - (4:09) 113 BPM
Review: It may have taken a while - his massive debut single 'Hyph Mngo' was released 12 years ago - but Joy Orbison has finally got round to recording his debut album. It's a highly personal affair, peppered with speech snippets from various family members (including his mum, dad, sister, cousins and famous uncle Ray Keith). It's a device that works well, providing a unifying thread throughout a woozy, musically eclectic concoction that sees the now veteran UK producer give his distinct spin on ambient, slow house, two-step garage, deep house, post-dubstep beats, dubbed-out soundscapes, British bass music, experimental electronica, cutting edge deep D&B and much more besides. It's perhaps not the all-out assault on the dancefloor some may have expected, but it is a genuinely brilliant and entertaining album.

Zim Version - (4:29) 110 BPM

Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Review: With releases on Phonica and Echovolt to his credit, Earth Trax aka Bartosz Kruczyński now delivers his debut album for Shall Not Fade, the sister imprint of Lost Palms. It's a mesmerising affair that features the warbling acid of "Pandora's Box" and "Full Throttle" at one end of the spectrum and the atmospheric break beat techno of "I'm Not Afraid" and "Adhocracy" at the other. In between these two extremes sit irresistibly evocative cuts such as the rickety rhythms of "Fade Away" and the uplifting bass tones of "Copies Of Copies", making for a well-rounded and effortlessly executed debut album.

Sleepy Pietro (feat Tigran Hamasyan) - (3:25) 113 BPM
Review: Machinedrum is back with his first album in four years! A View Of U sees the arrival of the LA-based producer's ninth LP overall putting him back on the map after teaming up with Holly to release the Berry Patch EP on Visions Recordings, and his J-E-T-S collaboration with Jimmy Edgar. Out of the 11 tracks on show here, eight are collaborations, featuring the likes of Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs ("Kain Train"), Canadian R&B singer Rochelle Jordan ("The Relic") to Awful Records boss Father ("Spin Blocks"). Find other dope collabs in Mono/Poly & Taner?lle's trip hop and steppy "Star" alongside something deep, cosmic and new age with Chrome Sparks in "Idea 36". A View Of U provides the follow up to Machinedrums last full-length, Human Energy (2016), which this time around is said to center around the idea of having an out-of-body experience. Double Vision.

Night Visions - (5:18) 118 BPM
Review: The Shall Not Fade team have assembled something pretty special here as OTIK delivers five tracks of stunning soundscaping ability, kicking off with the beautiful arpeggio stutters and glistening vocal flexes of 'Night Visions'. From here, the title track 'Zero-Sum Game' unleashes some vibrant percussive lines atop pounding sub layers, before the soothing sitar action of 'Silhouetta' slides into play. The pace then quickens significantly with the shuffling rhythms of 'Falling Forward', with 'Neuron Blossom' providing the perfect outro through some icy harmonic mastery.

Elephant & Snake - (5:55) 118 BPM
Review: As debut EPs go, Yves Thomas's first outing - on Rekids, no less - is not only rather impressive but also notably expansive. Over the course of seven varied tracks, the London-based, Bristol-raised DJ/producer/vocalist fully turns his hand to enveloping, slow-burn ambient ("Brain Dead"), spacey and dreamy breakbeat-house (the superb "MA1"), more robust and bass-heavy - but no less melodically detailed -dancefloor fare (the raw and weighty "River"), hypnotic late night fare ("Elephant & Snake"), jazzy intergalactic broken beat ("Callout FM"), drowsy electronica/synth-pop fusion ("Pilot") and immersive, acid-flecked deep-bruk business ("Birds of the Barbican").

Pink Moon - (4:36) 118 BPM
Review: Sebo K has always had a knack of crafting emotive house and techno, so it's no real surprise that his latest release is shot through with atmospheric sensibilities. This aesthetic is audible from the get-go: "Nebula" is led by a tripped out acid line, but it's the booming hardcore bass and the jazzy keys that really push the listener back to a more carefree time in electronic music's recent past. On the reflective "Sous Les Etoiles", the German producer goes deeper again as wispy synth lines and ghostly melodies showcase his expertise. The title track sees Sebo map out a new direction thanks to the use of crisp break beats - albeit coated in soft focus melodies - while "Pink Moon" concludes the release again with breathy, effervescent sounds.

Review: What an exciting project this was too open up as we see Tom Booze touch down on Bomb Strikes with a truly explosive compilation, hand-curated for maximum sonic impact. From start to finish this collection showcases the very best of the now in new school breakbeat, from the Asian-inspired string plucks of Lack Jemmon's 'Don't Stop' to the more dubstep inspired twists and grooves of YGT YGT YGT from Posij and the sizzling synthetics of The Funk Hunters & Kotek's rework of 'With You', originally from Haywyre'. The project is jam-packed with exciting creations, with heavyweights such as Krafty Kuts, PAV4N, A.Skillz, Fort Knox Five & more all providing hard hitting drops to make this one of the most powerful breakbeat compilations of the year.
