Party Breaks Vol 7
BMD - "Instant Funk (Just Add Vocals)" (feat Rambus) - (4:06)
Chudy - "Clap Your Hands" - (3:27) Hot
DJ Kid Stretch - "Take Me" - (4:31)
Jayl Funk - "Honk The Phonk" - (4:32)
Warson - "Can't Stop" - (3:49)
Warson - "Banger Joint" - (3:43)
Review: The Tru Funk label is a consistently strong destination for funky mash-ups and breaks-heavy bootlegs, and they've outdone themselves this time on this latest volume of their "Party Breaks". Some highlights include Naughty By Nature getting layered over a silky disco/hip hop hybrid beat on "Clap Your Hands", while '70s Scottish funk stars The Average White Band get their tight sound rejigged by Jayl Funk on "Honk The Funk".

So Much Steeze - (2:57) Hot
Keep It Gansta - (2:51)
Piano Skank - (3:29)
Review: Steeze sees Bomb Strikes deliver another dynamite-fuelled beat workout from J Roc The label has been on fire as of late and they're certainly packing the punches, ranging from hip-hop to broken beat to all things crunchy, they've established a name for themselves within the sample-heavy domain. "So Much Steeze" mixes elements of dubstep together with classic rap battle-style vocals, whilst "Keep It Gansta" is funkier and more melodic with its total beat mash-up. Finally, "Piano Skank" brings the tropical heat over and rounds up this fun, booty-shaking EP for the imprint.

Review: Another vital release from the Bombstrikes crew as Canadian mash-up star J Roc fuses a sack full of tunes on this new EP - led by "Nickelodeon", which samples jaunty '50s tune "Music Music Music" by Teresa Brewer and blends it with a hip-hop sensibility. Bombstrikes boss Mooqee joins J Roc on the club-rocking electro swinging "Better Things", while Sam Cooke's "Shake" gets a radical D&B overhaul.

Radical Mixtape Party Bangers Volume 7
Swingin' Riot - (4:08) Hot
Upside Down - (4:39)
Outdoor Funk - (4:02) 131 BPM
Review: We love it when artists have the courtesy to do our job for us. Here Japetto has very kindly summarised the contents of this fine EP in the title. Actually that's not strictly true - Japetto is actually following the likes of X-Ray Ted and Shaka Loves You in Radical Mixtapes' acclaimed series of 'feature EPs' -Party Bangers. He's turned in some stellar work too - "Swingin' Riot" hails from the cooler end of the electro-swing spectrum, "Upside Down" sees Diana Ross go all hip house and "Outdoor Funk" sees Wilson Pickett given extra oomph in the drum department. Splendid stuff.

Soul And FunkEXCLUSIVE
Miracle - (3:18) 109 BPM
Let Me Be - (3:20) 108 BPM Hot
Review: German nu-funk/funk breaks stalwart Jayl Funk comes with a two-track release on his own Honkey Phonk label, and it's very much a game of two halves, Brian. 'Miracle' opens with some geetar screeching ? la 'When Doves Cry', before breaking out into an exuberant, happy-clappy soul stomper, complete with gospel choir, that's surely missed its true destiny - to soundtrack the wedding party scene in a Whoopi Goldberg rom-com. But for dirtier, rawer funk thrills head for the brass-parpin' 'Let Me', which comes on like a long lost Ike & Tina jam from the early 70s.

We Got The Funk (original mix) - (4:54) 126 BPM Hot
We Got The Funk (Caz remix) - (4:30) 60 BPM
Review: Supreme boogie business from longstanding German beat operator Jayl Funk; taking a classic Herbie Hancock/WAR style bassline, laying it gracefully over a series of bolshy big beats and massaging it with flutes, cowbells, horns and party noises, it's an instant party starter that people will recognise without ever hearing it previously. Looking for more of a 80s electro boogie twist with subtle shards of early Guy Called Gerald? Jump on Caz's version. You got the funk!

Feel The Heat - (3:43) 58 BPM Hot
Fantastic Sunshine - (3:45) 112 BPM
Review: Honkey Phonk founder Jayl Funk outta Germany brings his cards to the table with this Four Aces EP, turning to disco as an inspiration for the most part with a sweet touch of samba in "Together". With a rocksteady groove and blaxploitation funk backing the horns, vocals and extra piano rolls of "Feel The Heat", it's the filtered strings of life and roller disco decadence of "Something" that accompanies the '80s-pop elements, spaced-out vocoders, and undeniable dancefloor vibe of "Fantastic Sunshine". Four of a kind.

Across The Sea (DJ Love remix) - (6:07) 142 BPM
Review: Nuremberg's Jayl Funk is becoming one of the most important producers and DJs in the funky breaks scene. He returns on his own Honkey Phonk label with "Across The Sea (Club version)" a soul funk excursion in the vein of Teddy Pendergrass or Chic but hey don't ask us, ask the DJ or keep diggin' Daddy O! There's also two killer remixes at hand; first up is Funkonomics with a rendition which goes for a more stripped and '80s sound with synth funk bass, 808 hi-hats and vocoded vocals. Finally DJ Love's remix is definitely the party starter on here, with its hip-hop inspired block rocking' beats.

Funkin Your Soul
Funkin Your Soul (original mix) - (3:28) 114 BPM Hot
Funkin Your Soul (Trotter remix) - (5:01) 118 BPM
Review: JayL Funk's delightful approach to edits and vintage reincarnations has just got a new groove on thanks to this little beauty of a two-tracker for the Honkey Phonk imprint, and it's hard to have a smile on your face when listening to this gear on a Friday morning. Featuring the Tarzan Bros, "Funkin Your Soul" offers a chunky boogie bass that drops like a mother****** on the speakers, leaving absolutely no laggers standing awkwardly in the corners. Trotter mix is a little more elegant in its approach, but still carries the original's tight groove, hummable vocals and utterly funked-out bass.

Review: This is a eclectic EP which see's breakbeat explore other areas of the electronic universe. Exquisite production all round. 'The Secret Weapon (Part 2)' sounds like Jive Bunny does Breakbeat, from House of Pain to Jay-Z, the track is ready to entertain. If you're still in the party mood move on to 'The Episode (Sammy Senior Remix)' which sounds like the sound track to a super funky 80's sitcom, with the coolest Fresh Prince style spitting. Moving into 'Never Get Old (DJ Maars Reskank Remix)' and we've flown the Atlantic and landed in the height of the Scar movement with a cheeky, happy go lucky Northern lyrical swag compliments by sun kissed reggae sing song. 'Back To The Future' touches on the UK garage scene, with 4/4 beats, rave piano chords and a simple, soulful singing sample, while keeping an American tone to the rap lyricism. 'The Market St Hustle' takes an unexpected turn to the avenue of dirty dubstep but the horns keep it happy and bouncy, before the DJ Aka remix of 'Never Get's Old' brings us to the 170 world of dnb. 'Drinking In The Sun (Ewan Hoozamo remix)' sounds as though it has been written for Adventure Time, the whole track has been coated in the sweetest, stickiest layer of sugar. After all the dancing you would have just undertaken it's great that the EP ends with a chilled track like 'Don't Stand For It'. As an entire collection of music this is exceptionally good.

This brand new project contains thirteen tracks of futuristic electronic goodness, from the stuttered moogy tones of 'We Need More Lasers' and unpredictable sample-based madness of 'Blind Tap-Dancer' to the sharp drum grooves of 'Rebel Funk' and layered melodies of 'Pull The Chord'. There is truly something for all breakbeat lovers amongst this body of work, yet again solidifying Johnnypluse as one of the most creative sample based producers in the scene today.

As a project this encapsulates everything excited about modern breakbeat music with it's high energy, unrelenting drum arrangements, pounding bass notation and thrilling vocal performances. The collaborations bring this project to life, especially MC Mimmic's old school flows over "The Episode" and Bass Nacho's additional credits on "Back To The Future". Other highlights include the more stripped back arrangements of "Never Get Old Riddim" and "No Gee Just Mpc" which add a whole additional layer of depth to the overall project.

Review: This is such a cute and happy track, the pleasingly whiney American vocal reminds us of Darwin Deez and Vampire Weekend's beer soaked college escapes, singing of short skirts, unemployment and free houses evoke happy sunkissed blurry images. Syncopated guitars and robotic sirens bring the breakdown to different places. 'The Breaks Mix' is very similar to the original however the breaks are a lot more prominent. While Ewan Hoozami remix brings a different vibe completely, keeping the happy go lucky vocal, but adding a weird, twisted, candy floss glossing. The bounciness is amplified and sounds of fairground are added as well a ragga samples and a dubbier sub.

Review: J-Prime is a hip-hop lovin' party breaks addict. Here on the Ill Fixed EP, he laws down the law with five up front bangers that don't let up. The title track begins as a hands-in-the-air bounce-athon, before the hyper go-go jam "Put Ya Hands Up" takes the idea, and the pace, up a notch or two. Elsewhere "Funkfried" is sloppy broke up funk and we're introduced to a fiery female MC on the ragga infused "Spyfunk". Lastly "Slightly Stoopid" wraps things up with some cheeky vintage samples and funky drummer beats.

Review: JPrime returns to Kenny Beeper's Relative Dimensions with four more all-encompassing juicy bass party explorations. "Boom Boom" is all about the P-funk groove. Measured, fat and peppered with short sharp hip-hop vox shots, it's an instant heater. Elsewhere "Rebel Funk" adds a little more room between the elements such as subtle guitar wahs and a slo-mo 80s electro boogie backdrop, "Everybody Come On" whips and slaps with jazzy drums and a mischievous synth hook that quickly turns dirty and "Mr Incredible" shuts us down with a much more direct and savage bassline and hip-hop attitude. Shake shake the room...

Review: Fresh-faced nu-funk crew Rise Above call in some big names for their debut quadlet of bass-bitten buzz cuts. Tonic takes the Beasties and drags them into a post apocalyptic future where ugly basslines reign supreme. Howla switches and slams with a series of tightly edited horns and a blisteringly heavy groove. JFB, meanwhile, lays down a bed of rusty bass, sharp breakbeats and an array of cool scratches before dropping into Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower". Last but definitely not least, WBBL finalises this big debut release deal with a show-stopping disco twist on Mariah Carey. Launch releases don't come any bigger than this.

Review: Swiss booty dealers Tremendo launch a new series and the title says it all. The label's established funk sound is still in abundance, but it rolls with a heavier bass twist. In some places the low end urgency is more obvious than others - DJ Soo and Tim Livingstone's earworm bassline rips through "Boom!" with true musical mischief while Father Funk's "Feel The Beat Y'All" is less dirty and more cheeky with its classic swing motifs and occasional wobbles. Elsewhere we hear Jayl Funk pay homage to classic 60s funk, Trotters and Telephunken munching on raw squidgy bass and El Bomba getting all slinky and sexy. Get dirty.

Review: Polish DJ BMD hooks up with Jayl Funk and Warson to drop a trunk o' funk with this first volume of breakbeat-flavoured mash-ups. The recently unearthed "Wonderwall" acapella gets sped up and fleshed out with a bouncy bass beat, while Jimmy Bo Horne's stone-cold funk classic "Dance Across The Floor" gets filtered and chopped to perfection on Jayl Funk's "Let's Dance".

Review: A very classy set of instant party starters from the Tru Funk stable, with BMD getting wild with the Isley Brothers' classic "It's Your Thing". Warson & Chudy deliver some serious hip-hop wobble on "Find The Funk" and drop the Slim Shady beat over "Ghetto Bounce". The real gem, however, is Jayl Funk's "Funky Song" - riding a classic call/response soul sample over a rock solid nu-funk beat.
