HABITFROMTHELOT - "BASS CULTURE" (original mix) - (6:30) 140 BPM
Gruv42 - "Just Breathe" (original mix) - (4:53) 140 BPM
Review: The team at Dirty Kitchen rave have done a great job over the recent months in uncovering and showcasing some of the most exciting new breakbeat action about, with this latest compilation being the second of their 'WE ARE DKR' series. Featuring the likes of Phrentic, Skin Teeth, Skitzoid, Zero Dark and more, we can see that this project packs a serious punch, exploring the full spectrum of modern breakbeat ideas. Our highlights that have an immediate standout would have to include Ale-DarkNoise's heavyweight 'Pump Up' arrangement, a super vibrant thunder drop, alongside the more liquefied synth work of Zero Dark's 'Losing You'.

BASSQUAKE (original mix) - (5:32) 140 BPM Hot
BASSQUAKE (SKIN TEETH remix) - (5:05) 140 BPM
Review: The crew over at Dirty Kitchen Rave HQ must be fully aware that they have struck solid gold with this latest collection from Doc Zee, delivering two originals and a vibrant remix, exploring the modernised breaks sound in its full majesty. First up, the title track 'Bassquake' packs a momentous punch, flipping between jittering vocal overlays and growling synthetic patterns below, before Skin Teeth gets busy with a super hectic overhaul, giving it an industrial twist to say the least. Finally, 'Condition' takes a much calmer approach, sampling classic hip hop vocals and nostalgic chord progressions for a smoothened finale.

Review: It's clear to all who follow electronic music with any level of regularity that Om Unit has become one of the most consistently impressive names to follow, with the last decade of work showcasing creativity and sonic innovation with every new outing. This latest 'Fragments' album project sees those talents again at work, from the moogy bass flicks on 'Snagged' to the icey soundscaping of 'Entity' and super sharp drum processing of 'Side Quest'. This album showcases mastery at work, with Om Unit again proving to be a level above those around him, with highlights including the colourful melodic squelches of 'Moonglade' and breaks-inspired energy-boosting qualities of 'Hard Skin'. Top work, as always!

MOY - "Jovian Sunrise" (original mix) - (5:36) 145 BPM
Review: Amentec have done a great job in assembling this top level collection of new school breakbeat action, welcoming no less than 14 artists inside across 13 hard hitting creations. The exciting thing about the project is that it leaves no breaks-inspired stone unturned, featuring the likes of Sound Synthesis, Inkipak, DAWL, Flatliner and more. From the intense, arcade style arrangements of Sub Oscillator's 'Ketzer' remix from Difool, to the more abstract acidity of Bobo's bulging 'Club Proxima', we see such an exciting range on display. Our highlights therefore have to include both the classy club-ready bops of Ova Doce's 'Keep On', next to the cloud-lining euphoria of MOY's 'Jovian Sunrise'. A truly top quality collection.

Bomb Strikes: Highlights 2023
13
Various
Mr Doris, D-Funk & DJ Vadim - "All Down" (feat N'Fa Jones & Cantaloop - DJ Vadim remix) - (3:30) 145 BPM
Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Pump Up The Funk
14
In A Hurry (feat Leon The Pro) - (4:15) 149 BPM
Review: Boe "Badboe" Pedersen has always been one of he more reliable sources of floor friendly, funk-laden breaks jams. While his style sticks to the tried-and-tested, there's a quality present that's often lacking in similar breakbeat productions. Pump Up The Funk, his second full length, has plenty of dancefloor chops. It features a range of cuts created using snappy rhythms, familiar hip-hop samples (Missy Elliot and Redman are both notable inclusions) and fat funk grooves. There's a casual swing and groove to the material that's endearing, too - something that can't be said about many of his competitors' creations. If breakbeat is your bag, this comes highly recommended.

Naked In The Rain (S.U.R.E. Take XTC remix) - (4:16) 145 BPM
Review: What we're gonna do right here is go back. Electrohouse, bass music and glitch veteran Herve has clearly been in something of a nostalgic mood, as here he brings us a cover of Blue Pearl's 1990 rave classic that's remarkably faithful to the original, simply adding a little extra 303 squelch at the bottom end. And the retro vibes don't end there: the EP's other two cuts are similarly likely to induce misty-eyed reminiscence in ravers of a certain age, replete as they are with Belgian techno stabs, buzz basslines, chopped-up diva vox and timestretched breakbeats. Top one matey!

2Pac Wine - (3:59) 140 BPM
Buttersweet Symphathy - (4:49) 140 BPM
Review: Alert: another Actual Sounds release has arrived! New school nu-skool breaks, if there ever was such a thing! These guys are not messing around and here's why: They start off with a block rockin' remix of "Twist & Shout", "Cypress Pills" is, well... But wait there is more: "2Pac Wine" is a mashup on "Red Red Wine" and a rap by the late great rapper. Elsewhere "Get Your Hold On" mashes up in style again merging Missy Elliot and Kanye, "Love The Police" samples N.W.A. over some fierce Meat Katie style breaks and we'd best not forget "Buttersweet Symphony" which samples 'that' famous track by The Verve over some more fierce breakbeats for U.K. dancefloors. The definitive party starter!

Papua New Guinea (L. Major remix) - (6:28) 140 BPM
Review: Next up from The Future Sound Of London team, a vibrant collection of highly energetic remixes as Papua New Guinea is given some tasty overhauls, courtesy of Jumpin' & Pumpin. First up, L. Major touches down for a vibrant, industrial rework, focussing on crunching drum sounds and moody breaks to match, before Nishesque fuses both hard hitting drum & bass with glittering progressive house, somehow! Next up, more breaksy goodness with Soul Central pumping through unique rhythmic grooves, followed by a killer closer as Dee Montero unleashes a vibrant, funky inspired finisher. Top work!

Time Is Now White Vol 18

Buffalo Skank - (5:32) 140 BPM
Review: As always with Time Is Now, the quality levels are extremely high as they continue to explore their 'White' series, keeping the spirit of white label culture alive and well. This time Frankel & Harper are in the driving seat, with the pitch riding breaksy overlays and gritty bass action of 'Buffalo Skank' kicking us off. Next, the pressure increases as the dizzying synth warbles and 2-stepping drum lines of 'Oblivion' roll into view, closely followed by the more euphoric soundscaping and spacey pad arrangements of 'Taz &', again layered above some highly energetic breaks work of course. Finally, the Bakey remix brings some serious heat forward as techy sub warbles lay the foundations beneath a more stripped back drum set than the original, giving us a cool finale to zone out too.

Out There (Unscratched mix) - (4:18) 147 BPM Hot
Review: Bombstrikes welcomes a new collaboration to the label in the form of Boydex, Swim Inc and Lickweed. While these talented artists are making their debut as a trio on the label, their reputation precedes them, having amassed a dedicated following for their eclectic blend of funk-infused rhythms and electronica. "Out There" exemplifies their collective brilliance. Seamlessly merging bluesy undertones with pulsating midtempo basslines and turntablism
Swim Inc: "Teaming up with Boydex, we set out to create something of a stompy banger, walking the fine line between organic bluesy grooves and chunky basslines. To tie the piece together, Lickweed built on those blues band vibes to deliver a guitar solo with a technical turntablist twist and turn the track into something truly out there."

Calling The People (Freestylers Soundclash dub mix) - (5:02) 140 BPM
Review: The Aphrodite Recordings crew are back it once again, this one delivering one last bomb shell to put an end to 2020 with. They welcome in A-Zone alongside Aphrodite and a host of incredible remixers for 'Calling The People', a big room breakbeat epic, jam packed with good energies and intense bassweight. We kick off with the Freestylers 'SoundClash' remix, pushing pulsating subs and super rhythmic drum shakes, before Bladerunner sends the track to the jungle jungle chopper, unleashing high energy breaksy action alongside more powerful bass expressions. Following this, the '2020 Jungle' mix gives us a much more updated and high energy version of the original, which also gets a full re-record. The release also features a dub mix for the Freestylers rework, alongside instrumental and 170bpm remixes of the jungle recreation. Wonderful stuff all around!

A whole load of scratching, sampling and cutting comes from DJs AKA, Axe, Kid Stretch and Rudd and Skandi, while it ain't only new school with more traditional funk jams coming from BMD's "Bad Man". There's also some Daft Punk-meets-DJ Shadow-meets-Stevie Wonder action on Funkanomics "One More Headache", while Funky Boogie Brothers bring back the big beat fun with "Street Jam" - and that's not even the half of it!

Midnight Marauder - (4:06) 144 BPM
Review: Next up from DJ Physical, a fiery four track display expanding across the new school realms of breakbeat, coming to us courtesy of Unknown To The Unknown. We open up with the heavily arpeggiated synthesiser lines and intense 4x4 drum slaps of 'Red Scarf', followed by a switch up in pacing as the more footwork inspired arrangements of 'Still On A Mission' give us a new combination to enjoy. From here, 'A Little Deeper' focusses on dripping percussion and hardcore low ended drum roles, followed by the spacey chord progressions and moody subs of the title track 'Midnight Marauder'.

Hedgehog Affair - "Parameters" - (5:45) 143 BPM Hot
Review: Blank Mind Recordings, based in London, has tapped into the significance of a particular strand of jungle and breakbeat hardcore music prevalent during the period of 1991-1994. Their latest compilation showcases eight tracks characterized by dense atmospheric breaks, featuring artists such as DJ Mayhem, Luxury, and Skanna from that era. The standout track, 'Inesse' by Mayhem, serves as the focal point around which the compilation is curated. Against the backdrop of a tumultuous political climate, notably marked by the passage of the stringent anti-rave Criminal Justice Act in 1994, this record and its pulsating compositions take on a renewed significance, reframed within a context of resistance and social justice.

Pagan - "Feel So Good" - (6:01) 140 BPM
Review: Shall Not Fade has reached the ripe old age of eight, a cause for celebration in these troubled times for artists and labels. To mark the occasion, the Bristol-based imprint has offered up this vast, 34-track compilation featuring new and unheard cuts from its ever-expanding family of artists. Naturally, it not only reflects Shall Not Fade's output, but also that of its various offshoots and series. So, there's plenty of high-grade deep house and immersive, breakbeat-driven deepness, but also surging, high-tempo rave-era nostalgia (see the tracks by TESTPRESS and Sheffield sorts Adelphi Music Factory), bassline (ABSOLUTE & HRSN), futurist techno (Marc Brauner), deep electro (Halo), hip-hop revivalism (Lydia Eisenbatter), progressive house and trance-influenced loveliness (MNL), and much more besides.

Review: A ridiculously fun remix package of Danish breakbeat guru Badboe. For the uninitiated, Badboe has developed a style that has clear echoes of 60s and 70s funk yet still fits seamlessly into the modern musical landscape. This man has dipped his toe in almost any genre you care to name - from house to trance; hardcore to trip-hop. On Break The Funk we see his superlative breakbeat jams remixed by the genre's cognoscenti, with the insouciant Fuzzbox Inc remix of "Lose Your Funky Self" and the junkyard percussion on the Pulp Fusion reshape of "Funky Intro" among the many highlights on offer here.
