Review: Blank Mind Recordings, based in London, has tapped into the significance of a particular strand of jungle and breakbeat hardcore music prevalent during the period of 1991-1994. Their latest compilation showcases eight tracks characterized by dense atmospheric breaks, featuring artists such as DJ Mayhem, Luxury, and Skanna from that era. The standout track, 'Inesse' by Mayhem, serves as the focal point around which the compilation is curated. Against the backdrop of a tumultuous political climate, notably marked by the passage of the stringent anti-rave Criminal Justice Act in 1994, this record and its pulsating compositions take on a renewed significance, reframed within a context of resistance and social justice.

BASSQUAKE EP
BASSQUAKE (original mix) - (5:32) 140 BPM Hot
BASSQUAKE (SKIN TEETH remix) - (5:05) 140 BPM
Condition (original mix) - (4:54) 130 BPM
Review: The crew over at Dirty Kitchen Rave HQ must be fully aware that they have struck solid gold with this latest collection from Doc Zee, delivering two originals and a vibrant remix, exploring the modernised breaks sound in its full majesty. First up, the title track 'Bassquake' packs a momentous punch, flipping between jittering vocal overlays and growling synthetic patterns below, before Skin Teeth gets busy with a super hectic overhaul, giving it an industrial twist to say the least. Finally, 'Condition' takes a much calmer approach, sampling classic hip hop vocals and nostalgic chord progressions for a smoothened finale.

Tommy Lee Bones - "Stalker Blocker" (original mix) - (3:12) 132 BPM
Review: The Dirty Rave Kitchen crew have pulled together a very tasty box of treats with this latest compilation drop as the second edition of their 'UNIVERSAL BREAKS' series sees them unleash naught but havoc. Featuring fifteen fiery originals and the likes of ALT SHIFT, SKIN TEETH, WeZ WhaTevR, Afghan Headspin and more, this is definitely a collection we would recommend taking in across a long form listening format. However, if we were to unleash our highlights, the pure ferocity of Paul Bassrock & WoTeR's 'In A World Where Music Had No Future', the abstract melodic pulses of 'OnDaMike's 'The Hills' and the glitching synthetic befuddlement of Tommy Lee Bones's 'Stalker Blocker' would be our primary jump outs.

Review: After dashing between labels at a furious rate over the last few years - most recently Chippy Chasers, Highway Stories and Star Blazers - Tommaso Pizzelli lands on GLBDOM with an EP inspired by "old school Italian hip-hop". This is not hip-hop in the purest sense, of course, but rather an attempt by the Amsterdam-based Italian to join the dots between the breakbeat-driven, scratch-sporting funk of late '80s dancefloor hip-hop and contemporary house flavours. This approach is best exemplified by the ghostly textures, twinkling melodic motifs, on-point scratches and two-step influenced breaks of '60Hz (Original Mix)', which is later given a 4/4, tech-tinged house makeover by Lemonphase. Squeezed in between you'll find the tactile deep house bounce of rap-sampling roller 'Get Deep', and the warm two-step shuffle of 'Emotional Damage'.

Review: Manchester-based Loz Goddard returns to the spotlight in celebration of Dirt Crew Recordings 20th anniversary (Dirt Crew Recordings - 20 years? No way!). It marks a comeback for the producer after a notable debut collaboration with Harry Wolfman in 2016. Known for his unique blend of electronica, deep soundscapes and lush and organic deep house, Goddard has graced labels like Oath, Razor N Tape and Church on his musical journey, presenting here for DT a captivating mini-album featuring beautifully crafted ambient and electronica pieces alongside three energetic tracks. Inspired by a night at the White Hotel in Salford watching Skee Mask, Goddard goes deep on six compositions, offering listeners a journey through a new age sound of house to prick the ears of Legowelt fans for sure. Big ups Loz!

Evergreen - (6:12) 120 BPM
Space + Time - (8:00) 125 BPM Hot
Nigel's Vitamins - (5:08) 120 BPM
Played by: Citizens Of Vice
Review: Citizens of Vice are usually very good at sharing info about their artists and releases, but thus far they've kept quiet about this one - a label debut from a previously unheard artist called Daggers. Title track 'Evergreen' naturally sets the tone, with the mystery outfit layering sparkling synth sounds, echoing lead lines, delay-laden hand percussion and drifting bleeps around a deep, dubby bassline and psychedelic nu-disco beats. Elsewhere, 'Space + Time' is a breathlessly brilliant, low-slung dark disco number rich in mind-manging motifs and heavy bass, while 'Nigel's Vitamins' is a TB-303 laden slab of neo-dub disco with added hallucinatory colour.

Irie (feat Bobby Saint - Flevans remix) - (4:17) 59 BPM
Review: Four-piece "producer collective and DJ team" The Niceguys hail from Switzerland and have a long string of releases under their belt for labels like Bomb Strikes, Westwood Recordings and Ghetto Funk. Here they return to the former with four cuts that would work on funk-breaks and modern soul floors alike, with the Bobby Saint-vocalled 'Irie' and 'Strip It' rocking a Prince-like vibe, 'Don't Let Go' sporting a full-lunged soul vocal from Justina Lee Brown, and 'Dance' having something of a Smoove & Turrell-like feel. 'Don't Let Go' takes the gold for this writer but it's all good so feel free to disagree!
