Broken Flute - (3:52) 117 BPM
Review: It makes perfect sense that the Resense imprint would call upon Andy Taylor for a new release, as it's exactly this man's style of tribal downtempo that they have always been keen to dig out. However, number 44 in the game isn't your topical 'chiller'; instead we're launched head first into a hypnotic groove of organic percussion and bossanova sounds on "Kitschy Jungle", a sure winner up in the dancehall...if played at exactly the right moment! "Broken Flute" is easier to suss out, banging its breaks away amid a sea of trumpets, and just the right sorts of sounds for an utterly winning party. All you need is drums...

Review: This thirty eighth release by Resense is actually a split EP, divided between Switzerland's Bandura who fly in Trinidad's The Duke for their first 'calypso mash-up', "Calypso Invasion" and the label's own Sono Rhizmo who updates that cool 50s voodoo jazz sound on the appropriately named "Voodoo". Hot stuff!

Review: Beatnik City is one of the chief exponents of the Northern Soul sound and its crate digging culture. Here they present what they dub "BarBeat", which is a good way to describe the non-purist approach of the edits featured - perfect fodder for bars rather than big room clubs. Perfect examples of this approach include "Finti Cents" where In Da Club gets taken back into time to a shimmying Motown backing groove or the 90s-hip-hop-goes-retro-big-beat vibes of "Jurassic Jive".

Review: Never a dull moment on this eight-track, 10-mix collection from Sweden's Ture Sj?berg, AKA Beatconductor, which finds him in a re-edit/mash-up frenzy as he reworks a range of classic cuts in often highly unexpected style. Donna Summer's 'Love Is In Control' gets a 60s lounge jazz infusion on 'Finger On The Trigger', Beyonce's 'Crazy Is Love' is given a reggaefied makeover, Angie Stone goes head-to-head with the Steve Miller Band on 'Fly Like A Stone', and so it goes on. Along the way you'll find nods to Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones, before the album's completed by three different mixes of 'Good Vibes' - the Beach Boys if they'd formed in Kingston, JA rather than Hawthorne, CA!

Here they kick start the year with the direct, "Punani Pounder", a rolling flute-a-thon, before we hit the boomy bass, loose grooves and sparse stabs of "Face Off". Blame It On The Bossa Boogie - (3:30) 120 BPM
Review: Belgian producer Buscemi has been around the block a few times over the years, during a career that started out during the mid 1990s. This two tracker for Resense sees him in full on party mode. Lead cut "It Aint Right No No" fuses samples from a classic swing-era jazz cut with hard bossa beats and growling bass stabs for guaranteed party thrills. Even better is "Blame It On The Bossa Boogie", an impeccable mash-up of sweaty jazz breaks, bossa percussion, cowbells and select samples from, you guessed it, the Jacksons' "Blame It On The Boogie". Really, it should be a mess, but it's actually rather good - and guaranteed to get 'em going out on the 'floor.

Review: Nothing cheap about the complier of the latest installment of Katakana Edits series. Cheapedits has lined up a sizzling selection of party-orientated scalpel jobs, and gives The Supremes a thorough early 90s hip-house makeover on "Stopin". Inxs get a sleazy big beat facelift on "Tonight", and it's all about the vintage 60s shuffle on "Blacktel". "Buyer" provides some poppy ska and "Qui Qui" wraps things up with closing-time-at-a-tequila-bar vibe.

"Dub Of A Preacherman" is yep, you guessed it, a cover of Dusty Springfield's 1960s staple, here given an up-tempo ska workover. "Freak U Higher" is more of a bootleg mash-up, splicing Missy Elliot's vocals from get "Ur Freak On" to Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher".

Review: You can most certainly tell we are moving into the height of summer as Daytoner steps out with a five track funk bonanza, courtesy of the Cabin Pressure Recordings team. Kicking off with the super groovy sounds of 'Salsational', which progresses pleasingly into the smooth pianos and call and response of 'Bang Bang'. Next, we move slightly more funky as the catchy vocal lines of 'Ye Mele' and the classic disco drum work of 'Comanche' wade into view. Finally, we finish off this very eclectic body of work with 'Bebo's Beat', pulling together Rat Pack style brass sections and subtle vinyl scratches for one hell of a finale.

Safari Life (feat Mr Bird) - (3:29) 86 BPM
Review: On this 26th release from Resence, Dedy Dread shows his credentials with two deep-friend nuggets of fuzzy, summery funk. "Psychedelic Cloud" opens proceedings, delivering a loose, chunky take on funk that harks back to the days of '60s garage rock, Rare Earth and psychedelic funk. It's good fun, layering his Lyrics Born-ish vocals over a grainy broken funk rhythm. "Safari Life" sees him join forces with bootleg type Mr Bird for a shaker-and-whistle heavy slice of carnival-inspired laziness. Think parping trumpets, jolly acoustic guitars and hand picked spoken word samples. In summary: deliciously summery.

Review: Fans of this Parisian nu-disco chap, a member of Venice Beach no less, might be in for a shock with this new release. With a swift change of direction, "Jazz Soul Scent" (the clue's in the title) sees DJ Moar deliver five tunes of authentic jazzy soul and RnB. With lazy late '90s beats (think Fugees or Erykah Badu) gently guiding some choice neo-soul and accomplished vocals from Sarsha Simone, this is a different but credible departure for Moar.

Review: Oli Garch was last heard of covering Bryan Ferry; here he returns with five swingy cuts with a slight hip-hop bent. Things kick off with the Latin lounge-via-the-durrty-south vibes of "Rollin Stone", the instrumental "Oh My Man" goes way back for a Louis Prima-style sound married to trippy hoppy beats, "Get Your Enjoys" loops some vocals from a similar retro tune, whilst the two versions of "Hollywood Swings" explore the housier end of the electro-swing spectrum.

Review: Back in the 1980s, the biggest style influence was 1920s Art Deco, just look at the video for Bryan Ferry's Don't Stop The Dance and that sax-playing gal with the Louise Brooks haircut. What with that lookalike on this cover, its seems that electro-swing hero DJ Oligarch is on a similar tip. Oh wait; this is a cover of Ferry's louche classic! The original completes the circle by transporting the song back to the 'jazz age' 20s, while the tough beats and vintage instrumentation of "Daisy Electro" could be straight from the recent Great Gatsby remake. Spiffing!

The Goldenera Edits EP is more of what he does best: marrying vintage big band sample with tougher contemporary beats, and it's a formula that really works. Highlights here include the four on the floor "Jungle Night In Harlem" which boasts some mean old skool trumpet riffs, and the showtunes-go-dubby party-orientated "Grabtown Electricity".

He's clearly been working hard on his productions as his two new tracks "Zangano" and "Angelitos Negros" display a real maturity to his retro Latin sound; the former fusing familiar sounding brass with shuffling beats and 1960s organ licks, the latter a South American classic given a more percussive rejig. Review: This latest installment in the 'Katakana Edits' series draws pretty much entirely from global music, which makes trying to identify the source material nigh-on impossible! Still, there's a kind of 60s/70s lounge-y vibe to opener 'Besoka', augmented by wave sounds, while 'Hong Kong' is a more Mexican/Latin-sounding affair that'd be best served in the summer sunshine. The fluttering 'Kikiribu' again has a Latin feel, with a chanted vocal this time, while 'Tropical Sant' maintains a similar MO but has more of a hazy, psychedelic vibe about it. One for the more eclectic DJs that like to mix up different world rhythms.

Review: Chalk up two 'Katakaka Edits' outings on the bounce for El Paso, as hot on the heels of the soul-flavoured '115', released just a fortnight ago, he brings us four re-edits that look to vintage Latin music, and particularly 60s boogaloo, for inspiration. Leading the charge for this reviewer is 'Spanish Butterfly', which pairs the lead male vocal with melodic female BVs to die for. Elsewhere, pianos and trumpets take centre stage on 'Nuevo Boogaloo' and sparkling vibes/marimba (?) augment the sunny 'Brother & Sisters', before 'Supimos Callarnos' plays us out in far more laidback, lounge-y, almost melancholic style.

"Give Me Your Number" is a raunchy plea to the laydees with a sleazy bass groove and rocksteady backbeat. "Blablabla" is more an upbeat swing deal that wouldn't have sounded amiss in any decade from the 50s onwards. Authentically timeless and audaciously funky, this needs your full attention.

However there's no ambiguity about the standard of tunes though. There's five of them and unlike the more swingy vibes of the label's recent releases, "Vol 12" is going for a tougher funk vibe, almost rare groove in places. This time out, the man at the controls is FL, who takes us into beats/leftfield territory with four edits that draw on film soundtracks by way of inspiration. 'Bloody Dance' is scratch-tastic, 'Last Monk' majestic and sweeping, 'Broken Days' jaunty yet delicate and 'Forgotten Tearz' ponderous and melancholic, with all four tracks featuring western movie strings/brass (think our gunslinger anti-hero riding slowly into a deserted Mexican village) and/or martial arts vocal samples prominently.

Review: Alert: another Actual Sounds release has arrived! New school nu-skool breaks, if there ever was such a thing! These guys are not messing around and here's why: They start off with a block rockin' remix of "Twist & Shout", "Cypress Pills" is, well... But wait there is more: "2Pac Wine" is a mashup on "Red Red Wine" and a rap by the late great rapper. Elsewhere "Get Your Hold On" mashes up in style again merging Missy Elliot and Kanye, "Love The Police" samples N.W.A. over some fierce Meat Katie style breaks and we'd best not forget "Buttersweet Symphony" which samples 'that' famous track by The Verve over some more fierce breakbeats for U.K. dancefloors. The definitive party starter!

Review: For the uninitiated, The Gaff is a Canada-based DJ, producer and prodigious maker of "party breaks" - shorthand for re-edits and reworks that should appeal for those DJs for whom loose rhythms are of more interest than a straight 4/4 pulse. This first contribution to the digital-only Katakana Edits series is full of funk and soul-laden jams with heavy but snappy drums. There's a global feel, too, with excellent forays into afro-funk ("High Life") and Latin beats ("Mambo Number 5"). While all four tracks are carefully tuned to the needs of dancefloors, the afro-flecked disco-funk grooves of "Funny Saga" stands out.

Review: Rising stars Groovy Joy and Sebastian Roser have already made an impression on the pant-swinging scene with remixes of the likes of The Puppini Sisters and Vassili Gemini. Levelling up once again they make their debut on Beatnik with two stamp-happy prohibition party pieces: "Fe Fo Fu" is as giant as its name suggests with R&B vocals, tight doo-wop backing vocals and firing bluesy horns. "Meeny Mo" is equally pleasing thanks to its deep driving 4/4 and infectious playground vocal that will have everyone singing along in seconds. Holy mola.

Hober Mallow - "Here I Am" (45 edit) - (4:42) 53 BPM
Jim Sharp - "10th Wonder" - (3:35) 105 BPM Hot
Review: This latest two track drop from the Agogo team is a truly pleasing listen, as Hober Mallow and Jim Sharp link up for a groovy A & B side showcase. We kick off with the smooth horn riffs and grizzly vocal finesse of Hober Mallow's 'Here I Am', with this classic-sounding creation in fact being the '45 edit'. On the B-side, Jim Sharp delivers something super smooth with '10th Wonder', which again draws on groovy drum riffs and smooth basslines to create a tidy base, from which we hear a number of catchy rap verses which really elevate the EP to a new level. This is sunshine flavour down to a T.

Review: DJ Hooky isn't ashamed to venture down the road of mash-ups, because even though they may have been done to death, they still always rock a party. Here on "Jazz We Got" Mos Def's rapping gets layered over a really old and crackly jazz loop for some groovy chilled out vibes. Bonus track "Wicked Dub" takes the immortal Wicked Game by Chris Isaak and blends it seamlessly with some slow and low dub reggae.

Review: Based in Nuremberg, Germany, Jayl Funk is a DJ/producer whose work, in his own words, spans "funk, soul, breakbeat and nu-disco". Here, he teams up with French vocalist Lucy Lune Gillespie on a cut that bridges the gap between neo-soul and 'new old' funk ? la The Dap Kings, Haggis Horns, Lack Of Afro et al. 'Take My Hand' has a summery, midtempo but still uplifting feel and a singalong "take me from the dancefloor to the bandstand," and just begs to be heard live at a festival on a sunny day, while if you're not a fan of vocals there's also a NonVoice Version supplied to suit your needs.
