Review: Alfred Darlington. Quite why you'd pick a pseudonym when you already have a name as incredible as Alfred Darlington at your disposal is a mystery, but then, it's one of many brilliantly odd things about both Daedelus and his ever-evolving music. From indie-tronica, to the deeply warped hip-hop of his "Exquisite Corpse" album, his MF Doom hook-up "Impending Doom" or his 2006 sample-tastic release on Mush, "Denies The Day's Demise", Daedelus has covered a huge amount of ground. Since signing with Ninja however, he's distinctly upped the tempo and applied his scattered, bricolage techniques to making electronic/dance music in his own idiosyncratic way. As a prelude to new album Bespoke, this first single features Canadian electronica producer (and former Plug Research labelmate) Milosh on the vocals and positively charges out of your speakers at a galloping 130bpm tempo. With a thick kick and a juke-like clap keeping time, a wave of samples gets slowly filtered up, much like the start of "Make It So", but even more bug-eyed and delirious. Short loops of urgent strings samples nestle up against tight bass hits, barber shop quartet backing harmonies, even guitar chanks that sound eerily like they've been sampled from Arabesque's "In The Heat Of A Disco Night". Milosh's languid vocals fit like a glove over this sea of soaring noise, as he takes time over each line and allows the melodies to float over the top of it all like a saxophone player playing a deliberately restrained solo. The whole thing reminds hugely of Radiohead's "Idioteque" but constructed with warm organic sounds rather than icy electronic ones. A Floating Points remix of "Tailor Made" is lined up for the future, which will no doubt be pretty special, and on the strength of this first single, Bespoke looks like being an essential purchase too.

Review: "Streets So Warm" is the latest track to be released from Toddla T's huge new album "Watch Me Dance". Following the heavy disco-funk leanings of single of the same name, this release sees the producer return to the dancehall influenced sound that he is most well known for, with a range of remixes on an old school tip. The original features a simple trilling synth line which complements Wayne Marshall's vocals, whilst Zed Bias' "Old Skool remix" takes things back to 2000 with an infectious 2-step version of the original. Serial Killerz meanwhile deliver a DnB remix, and Ross Orton and Pipes deliver a remix which takes the dancehall original and beefs it up with some contemporary bass production.

Review: Following his "Moonbeam Rider" single for Nina Tune, this new instrumental EP from Greg Feldwick's alias finds the UK producer straddling the gaps between bass music and broken beat/nu-jazz perfectly. The opening title tune is a slow and spacey delight, complete with slowly unfurling arpeggios and some truly unexpected static gaps. "Whirlpool" follows a similarly astral path, while the beatless and cinematic "Dragon Drums" and the Boards of Canada-esque "Mist" are both future classic Ninja Tune cuts.

Review: A welcome return back to the fray for Strictly Kev's DJ Food alias - a sturdy building block of Ninja Tune's faultless reputation for delivering breaks and beats unlike any other label. Ahead of a new Food album, Kaleidoscope, due in late November, this release finishes a trilogy of EPs that also included "One Man's Weird Is Another Man's World" and the Ornette Coleman-referencing "The Shape Of Things That Hum". Australian no-wave legend JG Thirlwell guests on the abrasive breaks of "Prey", while "Discovery Workshop" takes in jazz and rhythm 'n' blues with thrilling effect. On a more classic Ninja tip though, check out "Magpie Music" and its chiming, Steve Reich-esque samples and coruscating rhythms.

Review: Taken from their imminent album for Ninja Tune, "Temporary External" sees Loka on excellent form. A constantly changing outfit who are unabashed psychedlicists, they're joined by the splendour of Welsh brass band Beaumaris Seindorf on the magnificent, Rotary Connectio-esque title tune, aided by strings and twinkling, cinematic pianos. "Sam Star" is more conventional, a late '60s psych-influenced song akin to recent MGMT fare that leaps out at you after just a few seconds. Really impressive work and a hugely recommended release.

Review: Philly's own bass champion Starkey is in stadium-filling mode on this new EP for Ninja Tune. Treated piano and strings, played out in a bombastic key and built up for maximum dramatic impact, abound on the lead track. Before long the fist-pumping synth grind more typical of Starkey comes screeching in for the last quarter - immense! Elsewhere the man is on more familiar territory with the agitated brap of "Blood Roses", and the chiming half-step of "Rayguns". The whole EP is blinding in its hyper-produced sheen, which should see it getting lapped up all over the shop, and rightly so.

Review: Tireless DJ he may be, but Andy 'Scruff' Carthy hasn't been all that prolific in the studio of late. This two-track single is his first release for some six months. He's clearly been listening to a lot of new music though, because "Feel It" in particular sounds very current. Combining his usual hip-hop influenced bounce and low-end flavour with vintage analogue bass, touchy-feely chords and old skool vocal samples, it's a slow 4/4 jam with a bit of wiggle around the hips. "Bounce" continues on a similar theme, wrapping Maurice Fulton/Boof style synths and pianos around a weighty midtempo house groove. Check it!

Review: An excellent member of Ninja Tune's illustrious roster, Liverpool's sinister psych-masters Loka return with this new LP, a follow up to 2006's Fire Shepherds. As the cinematic menace of opener "Entrance" gives way to the simple acapella humming of singer Sera Baines, you'll see straight away that this is an album in thrall to tripped-out jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk and Sun Ra. Others such as "The Tower" hint at a baroque, pastoral influence, as oboes and fluttering flutes recall Rotary Connection and the arrangements of Charles Stepney. Over twelve tracks, Loka create deep, rich textures that will stay with you long after you've stopped listening.

Review: Taken from their excellent Ninja Tune album Matilda, Stateless features vocals from Brooklynite Shara Worden as well as arrangements from the band's own Kidkanevil - himself a solo producer and DJ of ever-growing repute. Beautifully pared-down, with a distant guitar keeping time for Worden's close-mic'd vocals, its both mildly sinister and very soulful stuff - the former exaggerated wonderfully on their distorted, over-driven Blue Daisy Flammable mix. Fellow Ninja label-mate Slugabed cooks up a very modern mix of 808 hits and hazy, detuned vocals on his mix, while the inclusion of "Blue Fire" and "Bloodstream" connect the band with their future-soul ethos perfectly.
