Done Me Wrong

Done Me Wrong - (5:29) 129 BPM
Bax - (5:33) 134 BPM Hot
Review: The latest release from the Glaswegian imprint adds a further sheen of excellence in a year where Numbers has really knuckled down and concentrated on a schedule of multi faceted releases. Such has been the demand for Mosca's debut on the Numbers imprint, the London based producer cheekily took to touting advance DJ copies of Do Me Wrong via Facebook. Both tracks here are fully poised for the floor, priming a throwback Bassline / UK G swing dipped in a nowness from Mosca that's been evident on drops for Night Slugs and Fat City. Unusually, it's the B Side that's garnered the most attention, which is odd as "Done Me Wrong" is excellent, reigning in vintage female hollerations over clipping rhythms, swamping basslines and parping synths that pay homage to the classic "RIP Groove". Flipside, the more celebrated "Bax" is a dual assault on your senses, murky sub bass jabbing at your ribs, whilst the sweet cooing vocals whisper sweet nothings in your ears. All this is underpinned by a skipping mid 90s flex heavy on the neon stabs that has warehouse jam written all over it.

Au Seve

Au Seve - (6:33) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Broadwalk Records, the new label from Bristol house producer Julio Bashmore launches in fine style with the eminently classy Au Seve. Young Bashmore has an obvious talent for productions dripping in hooky qualities (see his still slay em jam "Battle For Middle You" as well as production credits for "Youth Soul" icon Jessie Ware) and "Au Seve" totally belongs in this canon, slipping carnival ready melodic touches and simple vocal loops over a dusted house mainframe dominated by rasping kicks and a killer rising bass line.

Review: Tumble Audio has been providing us with seriously killer bass music for a few years now, and here they celebrate reaching their tenth release by recruiting Roadman Joel to curate a selection of the kind of seriously heavy tunes you might expect to hear at one of their many label nights. There's a whopping 18 tracks on here covering a wide spectrum of British urban dance music, including Majora's ridiculously amazing tribal UKF monster "T&C's", A Motion's ghetto 2-step hybrid "Back In Your Love" and Sentiment's wobble-heavy tropical jam, "Change You".

Review: Alix Perez's 1985 sets the bar again... Edition 3 is another instalment of their spotless V/A series which covers the label's broad range of shades. This one is a game of two halves as the first five tracks flex around the 140 region with crucial slabs from Halogenix's Lordel alias and dubstep men of the moment Ternion Sound. Meanwhile the second half flips to D&B with a whole clutch of impressive designs; Visages' "Memories" is a mournful stepper, Bredren get bad-ass with the thumpy, bumpy "Only One", Machinedrum brings some outstanding soul on "Braided Leaves" and Perez delivers three of his finest. Bring on Edition 4.

Glue - (4:29) 129 BPM Hot
Metro - (5:00) 118 BPM
DLR - (3:47) 120 BPM
Review: The Glue EP by Irish power duo features two new tracks embodying the same dramatic and evocative vibes from their recent, highly acclaimed self titled album. The title track here unashamedly explores rave nostalgia, with its tough breakbeats, euphoric chord progressions and gated vocal samples taking you all the way back to '92. "Metro" uses phased acid house style drum patterns with roaring rave synth leads on this slow burning but heavily building dancefloor destroyer. Finally "DLR" soundtracks those divine moments of truth loved up in the chill-out tent, with this emotive ambient house cut with a nice tint of 303 acid for good measure that's reminiscent of classics by Orbital et al.

Review: Sheffield's Project Allout don't mess about, having developed a reputation for championing all directions in the ways of bass. Every take on that three letter word is important to this label and that's why they cram so many hot jams onto their comps. Basically they're the Ferrero Rocher am-bass-adors and they are really spoiling us with 49(!) lengerz. Highlights include AT's bleepy 8-bit hip-hop groove "Flash Bang", the epic, symphonic trap of Dubzta's "Lord Of War" and the almost disco tech grooves of "Murkers' by King Hydra. All killer, no filler!

Review: Having recently celebrated their tenth release, Sheffield's Chip Butty have now rounded up the cream of their roster for Chip Shop Vol 1. There are nine bangers featured here, all promising 'hard 4x4 beats mashed with twisted basslines'. They're not wrong either: highlights include label stalwart Dr Cryptic's pounding garage-step sing-a-long "Dirty Dot", the doomily orchestrated wobbler "Marching Powder" by Sekt 87 and the menacing speed garage of "Rude" by Little Mesters.

Review: Cymbal-heavy UK garage beats? Check! Sub-bothering bassline? Check! Dreamy, oddly pitched vocal sample? Check! Sweaty, wide-eyed late night vibe? Check! Result: "23" has all the right ingredients to impress bass music heads - and those into Hypercolour-ish deep house/bass music blends. It also comes backed with a couple of notable remixes, with bass veteran Zinc providing his own typically big VIP version. In truth, it's not that much different from the original, though Zinc's build-up extension, additional wobbly noises and bass EQ'ing work bring the most out of the near-anthemic original. Kry Wolf make the most of the original's dreamy samples and beef up the bottom-end wobble on their in-your-face remix.

Review: Sccucci Manucci once again proves its dancefloor chops with its fifth release, the Cinquemila Lire EP, which sees the London based imprint curl its moustache in the direction of deep house. Manchester based duo Toyboy & Robin open proceedings with "No More Sunshine", an insouciant mix of soulful vocals, shuffling garage percussion and burning deep house organ stabs. It's a heady, intoxicating mix, and it's one that's matched on the A-Side by Sahin Meyer's effort; the husband and wife duo turn in the gorgeous "Spread Love", a cut that wrings every last drop of emotion out of a classic, drummy arrangement. Flip over for "Saif" by Illyus, a twinkling late night excursion into melodic, star gazing house, and "Feel Love" by Firas, one half of the Waze & Odyssey, who rounds off another killer Sccucci 12-inch with raw-thentic smacky beats and an addictive loopy vocal and bassline.

Review: Charismatic Tumble selector Joel hits the road once again with a collection of sinewy UKG, future bass, twisted house and barbed wire grime. Highlights fall of every track like an ill-fitting suit with gully gems such as the weirded out wobbles of Joedan & Kontent?s ?Ruggish?, Killjoy?s vitalising squelch funk on ?Public Enemy?, and premium sexytime silk in the form of Taz?s ?Lonely? and gossamer two-step soul by way of Spekktrum?s ?Talk To Me?. What with it being exactly a year since the last Roadman collection, we?re hoping Tumble turn this into an annual affair.

Review: Tumble Audio is what you would call a truly "UK" label. This is because it deals in just about any strain of British dance music, and from garage, through to dubstep, and post-bass, it always delivers the goods in style. This time it's Archive with five smoking riddims from the depths of underground, and "Keep Guard", along with "Ghana Police" are what you would call true hybrids - the beats are harsh and stepping, while the low frequencies dominate the groove. "Gully", once again, proves that 'bass' music really is a thing by chucking in just about any genre imaginable that falls on the hardcore continuum, and there's even a few remixes of "Keep Guard", one stripped-down Burial-like reinterpretation by Bromley, and heavy-stepping version by Sly-one.

Review: Having struggled to find his niche during the early part of his career, things started looking up for Randomer when he popped up on Numbers back in 2011 with the bombastic blends of acid house and techno that made up his impressive Real Talk EP. Since then, he's impressively flitted between techno and bass music, and here delivers an all-out techno assault for Clone's occasional Basement Series. There's a real no-nonsese feel to the relentless kick-drums and cut-up vocal samples of "Stupid Things I Do", which comes in "New School" and "Old School" mix formats (the latter including some looser techno breakbeats, and thus being our pick). The EP also includes two formidable percussion workouts, which deliver driving drums and booming basslines.

The original "What I Need" is a breaky garage belter boasting big soulful diva vocals and comes courtesy of the more sensibly named Project Allout. There's also five big remixes to work with here, the best of which include the brain melting 4 x 4 wobble of Mr Dubz workout, Moony's melodic 2-step and the super-dark AT mix.

Review: Bonjour! Monty finally delivers his debut artist album and it's an absolute gem from start to finish. Featuring the many cuts he's been teasing over the last few months ('Hardware', 'Vibin' etc) the album takes a deep dive into every sound on the young Frenchman's palette. Flexing from the gnarled 140 bubbles and bumps of 'Dreamer' (with 1985 bossman Alix Perez himself) and the spacey garage vibes of 'Walking Home' to the soulful roll of 'Birdland' (with fellow Toulousian Redeyes) and the electroid night creeping title track, this is the full Monty on levels we've never seen before. Bass music across the whole menu, it's one of those rare LPs that will both slay a club and work well in any other listening scenario. Bonsoir!

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

Review: 1985 Music was founded by Alix Perez a year or two ago and, since then, has rapidly become one of the premier destinations for forward-thinking sonics that inhabit the 85-170bpm spectrum. With a fresh roster including Monty, Submarine and Perez himself, Edition 2 is a showcase of both the producers and sounds that Alix has in his orbit. There are too many outstanding tracks to recount here, but 'Drones' by Cesco stands out as one of the most creative: a subby, stepping halftime cut with an ingenious drum pattern. There's weighty rollers, too, including 'Swayed' by Bredren and 'Good To Me' by Perez and Monty, both of which are sublime examples in minimal construction. A truly sick collection of tracks.

Review: Best drum & bass album of 2016 b2b best remix album of 2017: 20 versions courtesy of some of the biggest, brightest and baddest in the bass game. From the thunderous bass theatre of Mat Zo's take on "Mantra" and Machinedrum's post-tropical twist of "Get Deaded" to abstract beat experiments such as Roly Poly's take on "Sinkhole" and Amon Tobin's movie-ready adventure on "Vigilantes" by way of a whole host of absolute killer drum & bass versions from Teddy Killerz, Neonlight, DLR, The Upbeats, this really is an incredible piece of work that stretches several times around the bass cosmos. Noisia never mess around. They even make hairy donuts serious.

Review: The long awaited, self titled debut album from Irish power duo Bicep is the perfect summation of their career to date. Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson have created a singular and unique album, founded on the blueprint of classic house, techno, electro and Italo disco: but all the time bearing their unique signature. The duo felt that UK institution Ninja Tune was a perfect fit for them and gave them the total freedom to express themselves artistically, describing the label's broad scope that has, in turn, helped them to thrive. They display a strong technicality and a desire to experiment, but still with a melodic touch which runs throughout the entire record. It is this approach to creativity which has allowed Bicep to establish a unique position in the industry, in the face of a crowded global dance stage.

Review: Brighton bass evangelists 877 have the likes of GoldFFinch and My Nu Leng amongst their roster and can now boast the addition of the hotly tipped Distro too. Featuring the moody garage-flecked "Pinnacle" and the deep, wobble-heavy 4x4 of the title track, Flava D also remixes the latter into end-of-the-world speed garage. However, it's the thrilling collision of Bristolian heroes Distro and My Nu Leng on the big-beat-meets-disco-in-bass-town shenanigans of "Sleepless" that's getting the real hype from the likes of B Traits and Monki right now. On fire!

Review: This new EP from Birmingham's bass bastion Bassboy sees him leap artistically from his early days of RnB cut-ups. He's been pushing his sound more towards an off-kilter garage sound of late, though here things begin brightly with "Rainbows" - an infectious fusion of fizzy garage-pop and brutal bottom end. However elsewhere the perky "Colours" benefits from some heavy tribal thump and "Once Upon A Time" is an orgy of nasty 4x4 and 90s vocal snippets and pads aplenty. DJ Direct also appears to add some serious muscle to the title track too.

Review: We are absolutely loving the direction that the legendary Alix Perez has been taking recently, driving his uniquely techy production style into the dubstep scene with fantastic results. This latest project on 1985 music is the perfect showcase of just how good it can be, kicking off with the eerie atmospheric sweeps and gnarly bass excursions of the title track 'Last Rites'. Next, the engulfing subs and classic vocal fx sampling of 'Deep Six' burst onto the scene before the stripped back bass tones and impactful reverberations of 'Spooked' touch down. The project is rounded off with a dive into 'Melodrama', a track teetering with emotive energy and rolling sub tones, driven by it's unique, Burial-like lead vocal line.

Review: Bear Fresh have been pushing their more deep house-influenced side of late, but now they're revisiting their more urban-orientated "City" series to redress the balance. This second volume keeps the vibes going with nine killer tracks, highlights of which include the wobble-heavy stepper "Crazy Hype" by Crown Duels & Resonate, the apocalyptic 4x4 meanness of "Crater Face" by Pelikan, the tremor-inducing low end of future-laser-house belter, "Olisha's Call" by Scullious & One Over and, the frankly nuts, military bombardment of "Full Tilt" by Kiri & Nab.

Review: Sheffield's Chip Butty label returns with its latest unmissable dose of bass, with label owner Dr Cryptic delivering three tracks alongside another trio of low-end heaters from Dr Oscillator. Brilliantly titled the Dr Who? EP, it sees Dr Oscillator deliver the digidub-flecked bass of "BIG", the frantic sub workout of "Cocaine" and dark, sinister stripped-back sounds of "Mandem". Dr Cryptic's contributions are on the much ruder end of the bass scale, with "I Don't Care", a peak time slice of 4/4 featuring red alert sirens, "Rudebwoi" a vortex of churning bass and killer vocals and "Gibbo" another tune guaranteed to mash up the dance with its frequencies. Essential stuff!

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

The "Good 2 To Me EP" is pure 3am, hands-in-the-air fodder and we're not complaining. There are three tracks here covering rolling, ravey, bassline ("Good To Me"), Deep wobble nastiness ("Wheel It Up) and dubby brain-melt 4x4 ("Clear MY Mind"). Review: It's refreshing to see Disco Cakes add a little something different into the mix of their mash-ups: bass! So in a bold fusion of old and new we get the likes of Deekline & Hotline Zero's "Pump Up The Volume" which takes M/A/R/R/S' 80s hit and marries it to a fizzy Drop It Like It's Hot hip-hop jam. Slynk also has a stab at "Top Rankin" which takes Althea & Donna's perennial 70s party anthem and successfully welds it to some steely big beat sounds and finally Hotline Zero's remix of "All Gravy" gets all tropical bass on our case.

Review: Gully shots fired: Fresh from damaging the dance with both Footsie and P Money, Royal T's immovable banger gets the treatment from three of bass music's most exciting characters... Wen creates a tripped-out sensation that sits somewhere in the shadows between the industrial strength loopy psychosis of techno and the unnerving, spacey dynamics of dub. Kahn & Neek, meanwhile, get straight to the point with jaw-breaking snares and a bassline so deep and metallic you need a tetanus shot before you play it. Finally we hit a TQD remix of T's own "Limbo". Fresh from their debut "Day & Night", the dream trio of DJ Q, Flava D and Royal T strip down the beaty, LA-minded drifter and rebuild into an armoured Challenger tank. Bruising.

Since his debut on 1985 he's dropped slick and critically acclaimed EPs on Flexout and Vandal before returning to Alix Perez's imprint with a second round of stark, stripped back jams. "Hypnotise" is the eeriest creeper of the set while "Random Conduct" grizzles and grunts with a much darker undertone. Flip for the slinky, groaning "Sleepless" and the brimstone burning stepper "Magma". Hypnosis guaranteed.

Review: Much like squashing a fly with a sledgehammer, Sheffield's Project Allout, counter Bristol's bass supremacy with this mammoth compilation. Yes, the second instalment in their eponymous series boasts a frankly absurd 39 new fresh bass cuts. It may take a while to get through it all, but that's half the fun. Inititial highlights include the speedy claps, fizzy hats and taut wobble vibes of "Manners" by 1Thirty, the horror move trap thrills of "Black Missile" by "Familiar Face" and the voluptuous house bass of Mooney's "At The Top".

Gripping Grain (feat Sam Binga) - (3:28) 166 BPM
Review: Last seen on Exit back in 2012 with the excellent Get Busy drop, Charlie 'Fracture' Fieber returns to the label and shows off his Loving Touch on an EP that really ups the production ante. Centre stage here is undoubtedly the title track which looks to two eras of Chicago for inspiration, skilfully borrowing (officially no less) from Ralph Rosario's Chicago House classic "You Used To Hold Me", and rebooting it to a 160bpm footwork flex which retains some UK bassweight and elements of Fracture's own D&B roots. From here Fracture drops a carnival classic in the making in the shape of Machinedrum favourite "Werk It", collaborates with Sam Binga on the 808 club burner "Grippin' Grain" (apparently conceived during a wicked hangover) and ends on a decidedly rude note with the junglist breaks n bass line business of "Overload".

Bluffin (Benton remix) - (4:13) Hot
Review: Sounds Of Sumo label bosses Kry Wolf return to their home imprint with a bold new sound in the form of Concrete; eschewing their usually lighter take on bass music, the title track is a dark combination of wobble bass and dub atmospherics, held together with some steely techno rhythms which comes across like Objekt's "Cactus", while "Bluffin" combines more abstract beats with ghetto house-inspired vocal samples and dubby stabs. Woz is tapped up to remix the title track, being considerably more sparing with the savage bass and rearranging its rhythms into something altogether more angular; Benton's remix of "Bluffin" is classic SOS, providing a bouncy piece of bass-heavy garage house.

Review: Two blisteringly fresh originals, one VIP, two remixes; Hadean comes correct with his debut EP. An all-out UK bass assault, "The Raid" sums up his skills; what appears to be a linear, sinewy mid-range bass strutter quickly develops into a multi-bassline face off where new sounds bombard on every bar. "Stompa VIP" updates his Chip Butty banger from last year with mischievous grit while "Brandy" teases us with sexy synths and vocal echoes before plunging us back into Hadean's toxic bass message. With added remixes from the currently unavoidable Pelikann and Holy Goof. Get raiding.

Quick-firing percussion pellets, shuffled house beats and swirling concoctions of bass delight throughout. "Dizzy" is our personal favourite but be sure to check Arctic Shadow and Jook10 on remix duties for the title track.

Binga Vs Breakage

Breakage - "Staggered Dub" (Sam Binga remix) - (3:38) 57 BPM
Review: Today's Critical lesson is brought to you by the letter B... Binga, Breakage and absolute badness. First up Breakage adds a rolling booty bounce to one of the many highlights on Binga's album Wasted Days album. Binga returns the favour by looking back into the annals of Critical history and dusting off Breakage's formative 2005 skanker "Staggered Dub" and injecting a cool amount of deep halftime space. Both exemplary examples of remix authenticity. Blimey. Bigness.

Review: Sounds Of Sumo have been working hard to establish themselves as a digital-only concern around the roster of Kry Wolf and Whole Sick amongst others, cultivating an up to the minute tributary of the bass music spring. Now their latest signing sees fresh skills aplenty dropping from CDBL, whose lean and limber update of garage reflects the times admirably, not least on opening track "Wake Up" with its catchy bassline and string-laden build-ups. "That Trick" does sneak some old-school breakbeat fun and games into the mix, as well as a light touch of Mo Wax beatdown atmospherics, whereas "Wanted" goes all out on the 2-step swing and some Tim Wright-esque electro grind. With a pair of remixes included for good measure, it's an all round winning package of contemporary beat science.

Review: Teklife Vol 1 represents the first release for footwork trailblazer DJ Rashad's new Lit City Trax imprint, created in collaboration with DJ Spinn and associate J-Cush, and a label which promises to be the definitive label for Chicago's well established footwork scene. At a massive 20 tracks this album is a meaty proposition, and it's testament to Rashad's talent that the album is entirely free of filler. Showing the producer's talent for swelling low end and threadbare percussion, album highlights include his excellent DJ Spinn collaboration "We Trippy Mane" with nods to Juicy J, the analogue mayhem of "She Gonna Go", the manic 303 and 808 assault of "Da Life" and the juxtaposition of smooth Rhodes chords, horn samples and furious percussive rattle on "Kush Ain't Loud".

Review: So at this point in time, it's hard to imagine Alix Perez making a stale tune, as he lands here on the wonderful 1985 music for another twisted collection of heaters. We kick this one off with a look at the spooky overtones and warbling synthesizer growls of 'Ravana', before the shivering LFO designs and glitchy melodic plucks of 'Lifeline' stutter into play. Next, 'Post-Mortem' arrives with more lethal reese bass action driving the stripped back drumwork forward in a blaze of system energy, before rounding off with the catchy arpeggiator flexes of 'Ends' alongside Headland. What a project this is!

Money And Drugs (Killjoy remix) - (5:17) 134 BPM
Review: Wise words from Dread MC, even wiser beats from Bristol's Notion & Young H. Chunky 4x4 garage with strong house tendencies thrown into the mix, "Money & Drugs" is an all-out dancefloor riot with catchy vocals, a deadly second drop and enough energy to charge a whole fleet of electric cars. For added screwface appeal jump on Killjoy's Birmingham-sounding remix where the bassline is twisted up just a few additional notches for added mischief. Blurry.

Review: Upcoming UK house pairing Mak & Pasteman show a healthy respect for the best of Detroit and London on this new release on Shifting Peaks. The essential title tune "Do The Same" is smothered in strong dreamy pads a la Derrick Carter, but spiced up hugely by an addictive vocal hook that's layered perfectly over blunt kicks and Carl Craig-style arpeggios. "Lost" is a more withdrawn and haunted 2-step winner, while "Mode" takes a familiar Junior Reed refrain but frames it perfectly over some rough snares and tough, grimy bass. An excellent release and definite names to follow during the course of the year.

Review: Unless you've been asleep since March or you've accidentally found this review while looking up an old school mate who happens to be called Richie (or Richard) Brains then you'll know EXIT played this mystery out in style. We all had suspicions on his identity but not even the biggest forum nerd could guess that it's actually Alix Perez, Chimpo, Fixate, Fracture, Om Unit, Sam Binga and Stray. Seven men, each one decorated and respected, their skills culminating in a body of work that's part funk ("Game Shades"), part Carptenarian cinematica ("Sk8 M8") part woozy, wonky halftime ("The Blips") part grime ("Bring Dat Back") part D&B beauty ("Voyage") and all gully. It's going to be hard to find a release more deserving of the title 'album of the year' this year.
