Review: Andrew Weatherall's Covenanza full-length, released earlier this year, was rightly praised as an atmospheric, largely impressive fusion of the veteran producer's many disparate influences. For Consolamentum, he's handed over the parts to those album tracks to some of his favourite producers, giving them instructions to stamp their own distinctive styles on his cherished material. The results are naturally impressive, with Timothy J Fairplay, Justin Robertson, Emperor Machine, Red Axes, Scott Fraser and Heretic - a rising star whose productions have been getting major rotations at Lord Sabre's A Love From Outer Space parties - each delivering fine interpretations.

Review: Ruled by Passion, Destroyed by Lust marks the fine debut of The Asphodells, Andrew Weatherall's latest collaboration with close friend and creative foil Timothy J Fairplay. Their compatibility shines through, taking their shared interests and inspirations and playfully tosses them together to create a stylish, coherent whole. The album displays its dark underbelly proudly, but there are more than enough shards of light to inspire those salivating after the bold melodies of Two Lone Swordsmen or the naive, child-like bagginess of Weatherall's Screamadelica era work. At times reminiscent of New Order and others cripplingly paranoia inducing, this ten track set concludes in sublime fashion with the duo's dreamy, cosmic disco-era cover of A.R. Kane's "A Love From Out Of Space".

Review: If you've been keeping abreast of all things Minimal Wave this year, you'll probably have picked up on Veronica Vasicka hinting at a forthcoming split release from Silent Servant and Broken English Club, the new project from UK techno man Oliver Ho. We've certainly been eagerly awaiting it her at Juno HQ and it's great to see Violence And Divinity live up to and surpass these expectations! Silent Servant mans the A Side with two tracks that will be familiar to anyone that's been lucky enough to catch his live sets of late, indeed it's almost too easy to visualise the flashing strobes as the pummelling EBM lines of "Cut Unconscious" unravel and beat you down. The two accompanying productions from Ho's Broken English Club dovetail nicely, but veer off into more wave orientated territory, with "Divinity" sounding quite like some of the earlier material put out by In Aeternam Vale. In a word, superb.

Review: Off! This Kill The DJ label just keeps on hitting new grounds, and this new collab between Car and Red Axes is further proof of just how exciting this collective really is. Car has already featured prominently for the label, but Red Axes has been churning out beast after beast for labels like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and many others of the same calibre. Although we have labelled this as cold wave, because is does indeed transpire feelings of chilly melancholia, the EP is basically a collection of mindful techno tunes for the more explorative of DJ's. From "Incognito" through to "2040", there is a feeling of pensiveness and true romanticism, the sort you don't often hear anymore and one that we're always on the hunt for. A heavy artillery of remixes come demo Il Est Vilaine, and Tom Furse with two mighty versions. TIP!!!

Review: There's much to admire on this latest 12" excursion from hard-working Israeli duo Red Axes. On the A-side you'll find two brand new collaborations, the most notable of which is "NYX Tape" - a clandestine, mind-altering chunk of minimal wave drug-chug featuring the distinctive spoken word vocals of original no wave star Gina X (she of "No GDM" fame). Chloe Raunet AKA C.A.R lends her similarly stylish spoken word vocals to the EP's other original production, the acid-fired electro filthiness that is "5 Min". On the flipside you'll find two tasty re-edits of tracks from the Dark Entries catalogue: a dub-tinged, dancefloor-friendly take on Solid Moon's spacey "Destination Moon" and a rolling, club-ready tweak of X-Ray Pop's quirky electronic bubbler "La Machine a Rever".

Review: An apt title here for an EP that comes from a Leeds-based duo on a label that's headquartered in Stretford. The EP packs two tracks in four mixes, and is very much the proverbial game of two halves: Bonar Bradbury and Tom Thorpe's two originals both draw heavily on Italo/cosmic disco for inspiration, the latter also having something of an epic, proggy kinda feel, but the accompanying remixes - Elle's Gotta Chase Paradise Reshape of 'GCP' and the Psychederek Remix of 'Condor' - have much more of an indie-ish edge, the former rocking an almost coldwave/goth-y vibe while the latter recalls assorted UK indie bands' late 80s electronic dabblings.

Review: Released in memory of Andrew Weatheral, IWDG presents a collaboration between his brother Ian Weatheral and Duncan Gray that turns in a cover version of New Order's "In A Lonely Place". Turning in a deep and sidewinding track of pumping toms, treated guitars and electronic drums to the slightest touches of dub, it's given a remix three-way remix hook. Pushing harder at a post punk sentiment, the Hardway Bros Axis dub focus on the original's guitars and bassline, with David Holmes turning in something cooler and kissed by breathy vocals and that classic post-punk inspired touch. Keith Tenniswood adds a percussive rhythm track to his version in addition to setting off a buzz of electronic percolations and cosmic effects. A place for good company.

Review: Tronik Youth's London based tech house and nu-disco force Nein is back with a weighty 17-trackcompilation celebrating his current label roster and a love for more retro-inspired sounds. Review: The final part of Dark Entries' long-running series of archival Patrick Cowley releases showcases tracks originally recorded for Afternooners, a late '70s gay porn film by director John Coletti. As with previous Cowley releases on Dark Entries, the double album also contains previously unheard material rediscovered from the Fox Studio archives. It's another essential collection of atmospheric synthesizer music in the producer's distinctive style, all told, with tracks ranging from the whistling cheeriness of "Hot Beach" and the sparkling, cowbell-laden throb of "One Hot Afternoon" to the dubbed-out, semi-ambient dreaminess of "Bore & Stroke" and the humid, upbeat "Jungle Orchid".

Review: 100 Silk continue their unstoppable run of fine hazy house jams in brilliant style with this EP from Brooklyn based producer Octo Octa, who works through a number of styles to fantastic effect. "Let Me See You" is an interesting mix of slo-mo piano driven house, booty rhythms and vocals and arpeggiated Italo pop, while "High Reflection" takes the direction into more expansive territory with its breathy synths and billowing vocals building up to a beautiful crescendo of saw waves and icy melody. "Coldwaves" is a similarly roomy production, focusing on deep bass and glacial organ tones which give the track a frosty appeal. The undisputed highlight however is "I'm Trying", which takes a sample from an already well reworked Amerie track and filters it through some New Jersey house production with deftly handled classic synth stabs with an undeniably jacking quality.

Review: Music From Memory's last epic compilation, 2017's Outro Tempo, did a terrific job in uncovering the dusty, rarely visited corners of Brazilian electronic music. Uneven Paths offers a similar service to those interested in the eccentric, often inspired fringes of European pop music. Of course, compilers Jamie Tiller and Raphael Top-Secret are not interested in run-of-the-mill or commercial synth-pop, but rather "deviant pop" - melodious, left-of-centre curiosities that some may describe as "Balearic". This is pop music from the outer limits, where tracks variously draw influence from spoken word, global rhythms, post-punk fusion, jazz, new age ambient and kosmiche. It goes without saying that the crate-digging duo's selections are spot on throughout, with genuine surprises around every corner.

Review: "Game & Performance" from Deux remains one of our favourite transmissions in the ever blossoming discography of Minimal Wave, and the duo of Gerard Pelletier and Cati Tete are clearly second only to fellow Lyon act In Aeternam Vale in Veronica Vasicka's affections when it comes to her personal favourite French exponents of 80s minimal synth. Having already released a Deux retrospective in 2010 entitled Decadence, the Brooklyn label now presents Golden Dreams, a four track EP of studio and demo tracks that Pelletier and Tete recorded from 1985 onwards. Typically all four tracks are previously unreleased and have been newly remastered for this release. Final track "Fam Fam" perhaps comes closest to recapturing the magic of "Game & Performances" stripped down minimal synth compositions and hushed vocal duets, but all four tracks will prove temptation personified to Minimal Wave regulars.

Review: For their 5th release the London label born of the clubnight of the same name make a b-line straight for the dancefloor. The title track of Desert Sound Colony's latest EP is equal parts anthemic vocals, stabbing guitar lines and a motorik backbone which combining for a hefty slice of post-punk inspired dancefloor churn. The last two tracks take the themes found in Lose My Rhythm and head down the rabbit hole to drown you with a flurry of breaks led rhythms on Suffocation and put you to rest with the pitch black basslines of The Blacksmith. On the remix front local hero Scott Fraser delivers an acid drenched expansion of the title track.

Review: Roam Recordings was set up by Jason 'JP Soul' Peters and Jeni 'Jeniluv' Erickson in 2001, and has since put out records by the likes of Demarkus Lewis, Rhythm Plate, Hesohi and Dino Lenny. For their 100th release/20th anniversary, though, they've avoided the obvious 'best of' route and instead serve up 21 brand new tracks coming from a mix of familiar names (Emperor Machine, DJ Rocca, Tronik Youth) and newcomers. The overall vibe leans towards cosmic and Italo disco, but that's a very broad-brush picture - there are tracks here that could, variously, be filed equally well under house, techno, electro, Balearica or prog. Psychedelic electronic disco at its best.

Review: La Differencia, Dutch singer Hubertus Richenel Baars' 1982 debut, has long been considered something of a slept-on classic by those in the know. Charmingly lo-fi and homemade in feel, the cassette's 10 tracks - six of which are featured on this first ever vinyl reissue - brilliantly joined the dots between blue-eyed soul, spacey electro, disco, electrofunk and slap-bass wielding space boogie. As usual, Music From Memory has done a terrific job with the re-mastering; the tracks sound stronger than ever, if even they have retained some of the charming fuzziness of Baars' original production. All told, it's another essential reissue from Music Is Memory.

Review: 2018 marks the arrival of a new player in the current synth game, the already excellent Dogs & Vultures imprint, out of Madrid! If that wasn't enough, the imprint has brought along a new artist to the framework, the enigmatic Kike Am Radar. The producer's debut release, Testament EP, floats majestically between proto-house and post-music, which is a tough nut to crack these days. The opening "Testament" sets the scene for what develops into a deep and overwhelming amalgamation of nu-school psychedelia, emanating consistently high levels of polyphonies and pad-work, all shaped and moulded to immerse us in a world of pure abstraction. Nonetheless, Kike manages to create movement, mystery and wonder, building a collection of tracks suitable to both the dancefloors and the bedrooms, which is the sort of electronic music we can't get enough of. Bring on more oddities, please.

Review: Grab a cold beer, whip off your shoes and head down to the shore: Bordello a Parigi's brilliant "Riviera Disco" series is turning ten with an expansive collection of cuts guaranteed to get you dancing on the shore shirtless. There's naturally a retro-futurist feel throughout, with all 11 tracks making use of the chugging arpeggio style basslines and colourful, mid-'80s synthesizer melodies of Italo-disco. Review: Having previously joined forces with Running Back to launch his own label, Sister Midnight, it's no surprise to find Roman Flugel pitching up on Gerd Janson's popular imprint with a brand-new imprint. The Anima EP is a teaser for the veteran producer's forthcoming album, Eating Darkness, though all of the tracks are exclusive to this release. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'D.I.S.C.O', a jaunty, life-affirming fusion of throbbing, sequenced synth bass, sparkling lead lines and progressive trance motifs that comes accompanied by a deeper and more trippy-sounding Dub mix. Elsewhere, 'Anima' is a wonky and minimalistic chunk of off-kilter micro-house, while 'Eating Darkness' is a fine slab of revivalist '90s IDM complete with dark and mind-bending modular sounds.

Review: Rampant and 'up for it' as usual, the Cititrax label is back with a new set of wayward technoid experiments for the more trained ears on the dancefloors. This time it's Romania's Borusiade and newcomer The Sixteen Steps to share newest EP, and of course, proceed to annihilate any idea of a quiet night in. The former sets off with the mechanical acid bumps of "Infatuation", guided by an eerie set of vocal blurs, and that's followed by the comparatively more beat-centric techno of the apocalyptic "Confutation". The Sixteen Steps first lands on "Signals From The South", a house banger with noxious levels of mutant bass at its core, followed by the single-minded industrialism and sheer techno brutality of "Promises On The Run". Review: Minimal Wave sister label Cititrax have been teasing fans with the prospect of a Further Reductions album from Shawn O'Sullivan and Katie Rose and the six tracks on Woodwork more than live up to expectations! Although O'Sullivan will be known to most for his industrial leaning techno productions for labels like Avian, L.I.E.S. and The Corner, the Further Reductions collaboration with Katie Rose dates back as far as 2008, formed to explore a vocal-led, contemporary take on the minimal wave sound. According to Cititrax, Woodwork combines the influences of classic techno and early house to create "super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor." There's something XTRMNTR era Primal Scream about "High End Basics" whilst "Void Of Course" sounds like gloopy acid house slowed down to a deathly crawl, the rest you should experience for yourself!

Review: Having come to light on Optimo Music, The Junto Club now kick off the Snap Crackle & Pop label with a new single that builds on their promising reputation. "Shiviana" is a perfect encapsulation of what the band are about, channelling all kinds of wave styles into their instruments but still coming off sounding contemporary and seductive at once. Khidja comes on board to remix the track, turning it into an acidic burner with a heavy dose of bombast thrown in. "Ikiryo" presents a more post punk side to The Junto Club sound, which Smagghe & Cross then buff up into a crafty electro number for the dancers.

Review: The latest 100% Silk release maintains the label's retro M.O. while managing to be more subversive in nature. The signifiers are clear, from the post-punk / no-wave grooves of New York to the grainy electronics of krautrock, but the cumulative result is pleasingly fresh. Lead track "Shadow Disco" sets the tone with a disco beat and looping bass lick over which synth stabs, FX and warbles duck and dive. More awesomeness from Amanda and Britt - the juggernaut rolls on!

Review: Since their label debut in 2017 with "Flower of Cane", Hamburg heroes Adana Twins have become staples of the Watergate institution. From being handed over the reins on the 25th edition in their esteemed mix series to playing regularly at the club, the duo deliver the goods once again on their new offering. The Curve EP features the brooding dark disco epic that is the title track, the rather dystopian "Cyrus" with its bass heavy electro beats, and the neon-lit aesthetic of closing cut "Nimbus" calling to mind the heady days of early noughties electroclash.

Review: Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. Then, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

Review: It's disco, Jim, but not as we know it. On his two original cuts here, 'Ascension' itself and 'Vendetta', Andrem - whose previous work has graced Roam, Nein and other labels - blends disco and progressive house/melodic techno influences in a way you'd never think was even possible, with 'Ascension' an uptempo, peaktime-friendly affair and 'Vendetta' more of a druggy, slo-mo chugger. 'Ascension' re-rubs from Rigopolar and DaWad emphasise the track's electronic elements, with DaWad also introducing a hint of Eastern flava, while Teniente Castillo gives 'Vendetta' a space rock twist and Roe Deers take it towards Orb-ish territory.

Review: As well as being a resident at Moscow's Denis Simachev bar, Leonid Lipelis has been slowly making a name for himself as a producer for some time. There's a whole raft of Lipelis remixes for the nu-disco set dating back to 2006, but it feels like the Russian producer has stepped up his game of late. Inbetween some killer edits for LIES and an upcoming Public Possession 12" as TMO, Lipelis dons his Beard In Dust guise for the latest release from the mysterious Bahnsteig 23 label. If you were a fan of that aforementioned LIES release or any BAH 12 it's highly likely you will dig the four cuts here with Lipelis drawing for some obscure sources with eminently danceable results.

Review: Damon Jee and Snem K havce moved from party-ready house and techno to far-out swarms of Neo-romantic cold wave...and that's absolutely fine by us! The duo team up for this new EP on Rotten City Flies, kicking of with the nostalgic yet progressive dance aesthetics of "Dear Humans" - sounding a list like Ian Curtis in his golden days - before dropping into the steelier sounds of "Do Carry On", another 80s-leaning dance number. There's two remixes on the flip: Demian's more house-centric version of the title track, whereas legend Mugwump transforms "Do Carry On" into a cinematic big beat roller that'll do more than fine at most festivals. Review: Optimo Trax 30 celebrates a double 30 years anniversary. The original release date of "Rejekto" is 30 years since Twitch started behind the decks. In 1987, it's almost folklore now that he picked up a copy of "Rejekto" and was smitten. Shortly after that, he got his first ever gig and played the said track in his set. It was known to be a fizzer every time time, but a few years ago he felt the time was ripe for a comeback and this time people danced to it. In fact, people loved it and would ask about it. 30 years later, it feels audiences are more open: or perhaps "Rejekto" was just ahead of its time? German duo Ra-Hen and Talla 2XLC would go on to become Bigod 20 with the addition of Thomas Franzmann (aka Perlon's Zip) on vocals. They were seminal in Frankfurt's early industrial scene alongside the likes of Lassigue Bendthaus aka Atom TM (Uwe Schmidt). Featuring the original, "U.S. Dub" versions and a slo-mo cover version by long-time Twitch friend and ally, the mysterious Frenchbloke.

Review: Ah, mid-80s Germany... stonewashed jeans, Cold War paranoia, Nina Hagen, rent boys at the Bahnhof Zoo, the Sony Walkman, Alphaville and some truly horrendous multi-coloured shellsuits. That's the musical and cultural backdrop against which this five-track, eight-mix EP from Annegret Fiedler AKA Perel operates, by and large - though the DFA and Running Back regular does find room, too, for hints of Gaga-esque pop on 'Internal Monologue', as well as an excursion into electro territory on the sparse, bodypopper-friendly 'In The Box'. If spiky indie-dance with a coldwave twist is your bag, step right on in.

Review: The unwritten rule with any release from the Minimal Wave camp is that the illuminating nature of the music and the delightful way it's presented will almost always be matched by the story behind it - something that is undeniably true of their latest release, a collection of tracks from mid 80s UK synth act Hard Corps. Fronted by towering vocalist Regine Fetet, the band surfaced in 1984 with the two track single Dirty (the title track is included here) gained the studious attentions of John Peel (RIP) before signing with a major label and granted the chance to work with two 80s production titans in Martin Rushent and Daniel Miller. Hard Corps disbanded in 1989, having only released the one single Je Suis Passee amidst malcontent at their lack of support from Polydor. Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt collates six tracks from the Hard Corps canon, with the aforementioned "hits" accompanied by unheard archival material that will pique the fancy of any self regarding Minimal Wave fan.

Review: Some 13 months after the label's last round-up of cuts from associated "Rotten Citizens", Rotten City Files serves up a third edition of its popular annual compilation series. There's loads of music to set the pulse racing throughout, from the opening slo-mo chug of Roe Deers' suitably psychedelic "Hunting" and the throbbing, strobe-friendly pulse of Thomass Jackson's exotic "Copcacabana's Magic", to the New Wave era, post-punk hum of D.Y.O.R's "Devil's Way" and the Weatherall-friendly dark room mysticism of 'Do You Know" by Skelesys. We're also rather enamoured by the reverberating, 4/4 electro/dub disco fusion of Marco Dionigi's "Listen To My Beat".

Review: Clone's always epic West Coast Series surfaces for a third time in 2021 with PRZ's badass & intergalactic Wishmaker EP. Pushing hardcore acid in "Hotspot", the newly minted Chateu Royal boss delivers some melodic overdrive and gnarly electro sequences in its pulsating lead track. Throwing down a gauntlet of Detroit electro, techno and Italo disco sounds, its numbers like "The Zone" that will make any DJ who plays it want to mask up and drop the mic DJ Stingray style, next to the ghostly strings of "You Don't Exist" and "Ok Electronic". A piping hot EP from an artist that's now up there with the likes of The Exaltics, Gen-y and CRISPR.

Review: The genius of Music From Memory has always been the label's ability to shine a light of sublime music that most will have missed. Certainly, very few will be familiar with the work of Geoffrey Landers, a Denver, Colarado-based multi-instrumentalist who recorded three albums and one single between 1982 and 1987. This superb retrospective contains material from all of these releases, deftly showcasing Landers' intriguing musical palette - a trippy mixture of vintage electronics, experimental new wave influences, strange spoken word snippets, occasional dub influences, effects-laden guitar passages, post-punk attitude, minimalist synth-funk and what would now be considered discordant art-rock. It's a stylistic melting pot that makes for wonderful listening.

Review: Blindetonation is a Tokyo based record label run by the formerly London based Kezokichi. The label goes for some stylish electro-indie-house flavour that fans of Correspondant or Comeme will surely be fond of. Canadians My Favorite Robot throwdown a typically sleek and slinky remix of Tkuz's "Calor De La Noche" which features some sleazy rhyming over the top (which we loved) before the bouncy late night groove of Duncan Gray's "Kickintrusion" gets a wicked makeover by Monoblok & PSLKTR: razor sharp bassline on this one, seriously! Finally man of the moment; the Frenchman Markus Gibb returns with "Vipre Lubrique" (Hardway Bros DJ Dag Is Playing At My House remix) where A Love From Outer Space affiliate Sean Johnston takes you on a smooth disco-noir journey.

Review: Vercetti Technicolor and Antoni Maiovvi's Giallo Disco has been a solid presence on the coldwave front since 2012, and we always await each one of their new singles with impatience and excitement; after all, they're among the only ones to release NEW music from the general post-punk smorgasbord. Newcomer Gary Collins rolls trough with the opening "Autophobia", a drum-heavy dance bomb with something slightly eerie and nostalgic at its core, a grey-scaled mood that is carried onto the more electro-paced "Dreams Of Immortality". "Signature Sound" is a slow, meandering explosion of beats and rough bass tones from the depths of the earth's core, lifted further up into the light by a remix from Protector 101. Blissful

Review: Berlin retro electronics from synth geniuses Thorsten Quaeschning and Ulrich Schnauss. Synthwaves pays homage to the masters of the past, yet feels fresh and enchanting. Rich, neon-lit patterns are modulated and mutated with precision into several post cosmic sounds to drift to. During two intense weeks in the capital, Quaeschning and Schnauss (both students of the great, late maestro Edgar Froese) are said to have locked themselves in a studio full of vintage synthesizers, analogue sequencers and drum machines and here are the impressive results. These tracks are so evocative and life affirming as you'd expect given the credentials of these producers: in particular the dreampop and nu-gaze prince Schnauss' contribution. As with the finest Tangerine Dream soundtracks, it's the kind of music that paints vivid pictures on the canvas of the listeners mind.

Review: This five-track single provides a taster for s/t, the debut album from Traxx, Beau Wanzer and Steve Summers aka Mutant Beat Dance. Produced in the trio's signature grainy style, it features the baby samples and moody, repetitive bass-led "Toy Story" as well as a possible cross over track in the shape of the jittery punk-funk and scratchy guitars of "Feed The Enemy", a collaboration with Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem. Despite this fleeting flirtation with fame, this release also shows that Mutant Beat Dance haven't forgotten their past: "Funk Groove" is a swampy piece of electro-funk and "Revival 80s" mines a path through the basement moods and dusty drum machines of 80s proto-house.

Review: Amanda Brown has a keen eye to spot new talent, and the arrival of Oakland-based Bobby Browser (real name Andre Ferreira) on 100% Silk is a great example. While he's operated for a while under a number of pseudonyms, he's yet to really make his mark. Just Browsing should change all that. In typical 100% Silk fashion, the EP's four tracks join the dots between touchy-feely, retro-futurist house, acid and slick, mid '80s synth-boogie. Throughout, the production is blissfully glassy-eyed and authentically vintage. The results are superb, with the chiming, sunshine-bright "Always Many" and similarly gorgeous "Smooth Cruise" standing out.

Review: Mi-Ami band member Damon Palermo pops up on the excellent 100% Silk label with a surprisingly varied EP of retro-futurist dancefloor fodder. As "Clubhouse" shows, his default position is classic sounding, string-drenched house - like Inner City or early David Morales with a postmodern wink (like a groovier Lone, perhaps). There's a touch of this vibe about the early moments of "I Can Feel The Heat", too, before it morphs into a no-holds-barred Italo-meets-disco house assault. It boasts an hilarious cock rock guitar solo, too. "Trax Crusader", meanwhile, is a tribal drum track that sounds like it would have done heavy damage back in the days of Twilo. Recommended!
