Monty & Visages - "Polar Wind" - (5:17) 174 BPM
Review: Few producers have carved out a production signature as twisted and unique as Monty, and the Toulouse-based artist is back on his home imprint of 1985 with another absolute percy of an EP. It's just as diverse as the others, and F4DE moves from jagged dancefloor rollers through to dubstep destruction and deep, distinct liquid sounds. The title tune smacks of previous conquest 'Quest', and its hugely complex array of interlocked sounds ooze sophistication in a manner that's befitting its clubland persona. 'Righteous' is a monster of a 140 track and you can smell the blood from the off, as a foreboding introduction leads you down the path of no return, straight into the belly of the beast. More minimal force follows on 'SVP' feat. Icicle, before two liquid cuts round off the lineup; we especially love the deliberate, purposeful bassline of 'Whatever You Need'. Sensational.

Rules Of The Dance

Rules Of The Dance - (4:44) 140 BPM
Rules Of The Dance (Kahn remix) - (3:28) 140 BPM Hot
Review: The Mungos crew lay down a gorgeous naked beat and invite emerging Essex mic-man Charlie P to spread it with lyrical command. The result is a perfect slice of modern day dancehall dub that will charm every style of bass DJ thanks to its big warm subs, soft skanks and a slick-tongued mic command that lingers in your mind long after the track's finished. For something a little darker head for Kahn's remix: continuing his Midas touch, the Bristol don gives this an intricate, drum-heavy twist. Ruling.

Review: Bonjour! Monty finally delivers his debut artist album and it's an absolute gem from start to finish. Featuring the many cuts he's been teasing over the last few months ('Hardware', 'Vibin' etc) the album takes a deep dive into every sound on the young Frenchman's palette. Flexing from the gnarled 140 bubbles and bumps of 'Dreamer' (with 1985 bossman Alix Perez himself) and the spacey garage vibes of 'Walking Home' to the soulful roll of 'Birdland' (with fellow Toulousian Redeyes) and the electroid night creeping title track, this is the full Monty on levels we've never seen before. Bass music across the whole menu, it's one of those rare LPs that will both slay a club and work well in any other listening scenario. Bonsoir!

Deep Six - (5:01) 140 BPM Hot
Spooked - (5:29) 140 BPM
Melodrama - (5:01) 140 BPM
Review: We are absolutely loving the direction that the legendary Alix Perez has been taking recently, driving his uniquely techy production style into the dubstep scene with fantastic results. This latest project on 1985 music is the perfect showcase of just how good it can be, kicking off with the eerie atmospheric sweeps and gnarly bass excursions of the title track 'Last Rites'. Next, the engulfing subs and classic vocal fx sampling of 'Deep Six' burst onto the scene before the stripped back bass tones and impactful reverberations of 'Spooked' touch down. The project is rounded off with a dive into 'Melodrama', a track teetering with emotive energy and rolling sub tones, driven by it's unique, Burial-like lead vocal line.

Egotrip - (4:33) 174 BPM
Gymnop?dies - (4:51) 174 BPM
Yalda - (5:56) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Visages has been one of the big A&R success stories of Perez's 1985 Music, and this four-track EP is the next evolution of his techy, hybrid sound. Dark Guru is titled with an absolute gem of a dubstep track, a loping 140 monster which oozes force and sophistication through waves of undulating low frequencies; a true class act that simply deserves to be heard in a club. The rest of the EP is 170, and the highlight is 'Egotrip', a devilishly sharp minimal roller that stays clear of boring tropes and instead blends guttural bassline sweeps with jagged synth stabs and biting percussive touches. 'Yalda' is also obscenely good, as a crunchy groove beds down amongst soulful vocal notes and shuddering basslines. Best in class.

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: Whether it's as a performer, a producer or a label head honcho, J:Kenzo has never done things by halves, so Artikal's debut long player was always going to be special. 15 exclusive cuts from the label's talented family and friends, this collection of contributions doesn't just document where bass music is at, but where it's heading. Each track is a highlight in itself, but it's cuts like the slinky hypnotic groove and cosmic congas of TMSV's "Scorpion", Sleeper's star-gazing, dub-drenched sub science of "Coxsone Dub", Skeptical's lesson minimalism and aggy restraint ("Skavenger") and Eshone's treacle-like dirge "Qualia" that really represent the depth, scope and vision of Artikal. Designed for the dance, arranged so well it works as an entire listening experience, Artikal don't do things by halves.

Review: Oh boy... Visages back on 1985 with another massive dub that's been doing the round: if you haven't heard 'Lunar Eclipse' with the truly electric vocals from Strategy in the dance or on mixes over the last few months, you haven't been paying attention. The exceptional collabos continue as Drone joins the French gang for a samurai session on the spooked-out 140 slammer 'Hagakure'. Up next: a fusion of young and old as 'Familiarity' (with Monty) warms up with a Virus-style flavour before going full 2022 venom on our asses and 'Sunshine Mystery' closes the EP with a note of Sunday morning soul. Easy.

Review: This second full-length from London-based producer Soloman 'Silkie' Rose - the follow-up to 2009's City Limits Volume 1 - further develops a deep and melodic take on dubstep that should appeal far beyond the genre's underground stronghold. With bright melodies, jazz chords, ear-catching synths, sampled horn stabs and future garage style vocal cuts aplenty, City Limits Volume 2 has far more in common with, say, the far-thinking two-step exploits of Phuturistix or Hospital Records' genre-bending Outpatients series than most dubstep full-lengths. But it's these qualities that make it such a rewarding, enjoyable and essential release.

SP:MC & Lx One - "Hunted" - (4:59) 142 BPM Hot
SP:MC - "Oh My Gosh" - (5:23) 144 BPM
Review: Making his debut on Tempa, multi talented MC, producer and one third of the Code 3 collective, SP:MC steps up with a couple of killer cuts on the legendary London imprint. "Oh My Gosh" is a slow paced, super sleuth of a track with low slung, undulating bassline, gently hissing hi-hats and clipped breaks with a retro edge. It harks back to the early days of dubstep, with a hint of Benga in there. Title track "Hunted" is another gnarly cut, with gritty, warping b-line, paranoid SFX adding further menace to the already darkened soundscape. Well worth checking!

Ruffhouse (feat Rod Azlan) - (5:42) 140 BPM Hot
Therapy - (4:07) 140 BPM
Review: J Kenzo makes an appearance on the lauded and legendary Tempa imprint with these two tough little tracks, which display heaps of character and genre-defining skill. "Ruffhouse" sees Kenzo team up with Rod Azlan for an intriguing journey, dominated by bleepy synth melody and low-slung bongo drum for the first minute, before dropping into a classic mid-noughties dubstep burner with hypnotic bass and weighty soundscape. "Therapy" is reminiscent of some of Pinch and the Tectonic crew's more experimental work, with a techno twinge, fidgeting beats, a Benga & Coki bleep and plenty of unique character to set it apart from the rest.

Shadow Boxing (Traumatize remix) - (4:54) 174 BPM
Shadow Boxing (The remix) - (9:00) 174 BPM
Review: Not many tracks are as widely renowned as Nasty Habits' (AKA Doc Scott) 'Shadow Boxing', a seminal number from the 1990s which you'll still hear out in clubs to this day (well, not right now). It's therefore about time it was given more remix treatment, as Benny L, Traumatize, J:Kenzo and Scott himself step up to bring us four new versions. Benny L's is hotly anticipated and the talented producer has stretched things out and toughened them up, leaving you on your seat with the suspense of his two-minute-plus introduction that gives way to a refined, growly take on that signature bassline. J:Kenzo contributes some percussive steppiness, whilst Traumatize injects some grit and Scotty rolls things out even more. Outstanding.

Review: Following an impeccable launch with a series of unavoidable singles, Seven's Uprise imprint consolidates its reputation and hugely broadens its scope with this far-reaching compilation. Tickling every possible corner of bass music's expansive underbelly, across the album we're treated to an array of vibes that stretch from slo-mo percussive cosmic bass (Wayfarer's "Reflections") to fractured, juddering beat experimentalism (Taiko's "Spray Can") Every track is a highlight but be sure to check out Truth's immensely demonic take on "Walter White" and the techno-minded riff aggression on Klax's "Link To The Past". Welcome to the future.

Cascading - (4:16) 86 BPM
Review: Can you believe it's been 18 months since Thelem last dropped a big release? Time flies and all, but he's been sorely missed... And these six tracks remind us why: "We Ain't The Same" is a barbed grime-referend battle anthem with all the vitriol you'd expect from a T-Man feature. Dig deeper for rolling titanium punches ("Get A Grip"), bulbous 8-bit bass funk ("Equippin'") and Joker-style velveteen spatial strutting ("Latched"). For added measure, Thelem also shows us how does things on a D&B flex with Enei-level iced-out D&B ("Mind Games") and a crisp, haunted Commix-style rattler ("Cascading"). Don't leave it so long next time Thelem!

Alix Perez & Headland - "Ends" - (4:42) 67 BPM
Review: So at this point in time, it's hard to imagine Alix Perez making a stale tune, as he lands here on the wonderful 1985 music for another twisted collection of heaters. We kick this one off with a look at the spooky overtones and warbling synthesizer growls of 'Ravana', before the shivering LFO designs and glitchy melodic plucks of 'Lifeline' stutter into play. Next, 'Post-Mortem' arrives with more lethal reese bass action driving the stripped back drumwork forward in a blaze of system energy, before rounding off with the catchy arpeggiator flexes of 'Ends' alongside Headland. What a project this is!

Review: Waeys returns to Critical with four more steaming rave jams. 'Raw Flavour' says it all; a blistering head-rearranger with a rasping bassline and flips into springy breakbeat it's the perfect combo between the rougher UK style and the more cosmic European licks. Deeper into the EP we're immersed in a sea of powerful Waeys flavoured contrast as SOLAH joins the mix with the lush jazzy title track '10,000', 'B.B' goes full grizzly roller mode and P4VAN joins in on 'Vision' for a heavyweight dubstep finale. 10,000 reasons to be happy.

Review: If you don't understand why Dubmatix has been named 'Canada's dread at the controls' by none other than Don Letts, just look at the list of vocalists on board this project... Eek A Mouse, Horace Andy, Tenor Fly, U-Roy and Cornell Campbell. Did someone just say 'legends'? Naturally, the beats back up the headline name-dropping. Stretching from the rugged dubsteppery of "Black Market War Dub" to the more classical, dub positivity of tracks like "Free Up" and "She's In Love", this is a comprehensive picture of dub's many shades AND a great calling card for Canada's 'dread at the controls'.

Review: Dark, militant dubstep coming sraight out of Renaissance city Florence , and we would say that Ago seems to be at the top of the Dubstep food chain. The producer returns to InnaMind Recordings with a swarm of fully-fledged dread-out fire; the bass weight is very much in place alongside the rest of their heartical bliss. "Why Won't You", the lead tune, literally steps its way through the rhythm with big power drums and echoing FX tricks, while "Flashin'" alludes to the breaks format thanks to some devious percussion work, and "Zero Shift" takes care of the sub bass fix with those huge, meandering slabs of low hertz for those looking for their bass massage. Come and get it!

That's What I Was Talking About In '96 - (4:22) 140 BPM
Review: Los Angeles based deep dubstep imprint is back with local producer Ago, who offers us some more contemplative bass therapy from the darkside. First track "So Mi Seh" features delay drenched ragga samples over a deeply serious bassline and paranoid reefer atmospherics. Second track "That's What I Was Talking About In '96" gets a bit more fierce with its nostalgic, sampled dialogue soon giving way to a tough yet retrained beat assault and intense sub bass pulsations.

Including the curator Amit himself. Every track is a highlight, each one and abyssal, immersive experience but essential highlights include the toxic bass bounces of Moresounds' "They Can't Handle It", the 23rd century UKG of Oris and Chris's "They Can't Handle It" and Krust's big screen masterpiece "Escape From Finland". Amit deserves a holiday. Or a massive trophy. Or both. Bass compilations don't get much bigger than this.

Review: Moonshine's manoeuvres in the deep continue to impress with this highly accomplished collaborative remix album. A throwback to their original Steppin' Forward album - released March 2014 - the Jamaican label have given each contributor the parts to a fellow label mate's tune and asked them to get creative. The results are as consistent and progressive as the original. Every track is a highlight but stand-out essentials include the bubblesome digidub of Bukkha's juicy switch on Tuff & Powa's "Outlaw Music", Adam Prescott's sinewy shakedown of RSD's "Know U 2" and the foamy subs and wriggling melodica on Roommate's version of Alpha Steppa's "Shinkansen".

Review: Following jams on Bowlcut and Monk earlier this year, Cesco returns to the 1985 mothership with this mighty fine mixed bag of 140/174 treats. 'Rattler' says it all. Curmudgeonly and grizzly, it sizzles out of the speakers with pure venom. Elsewhere on a D&B tip En:vy gets mucked in on tippy harmonics of 'Esoteric' while 'Pity' is all jazzy, slinky and full of tension. Meanwhile on the 140 flip 'El Guapo' is proper hammer jam with a most unruly bassline Q&A while 'Juan40' will have you speaking Spanish before you can say 'wheel up the bloodclart'. Rattle and roll!

Review: Rebel MC aka Congo Natty's well received 2013 album Jungle Revolution now gets the remix treatment by the who's who of the scene. From legends to upstarts, the results are quite impressive. The man is credited as being one of the original UK junglists, setting the foundations for the sound/scene and how it has evolved since, so these guys have their work cut out for them. Highlights on here are the Dubkasm Dragon Slayer mix of "Dub Souljah " with its purist dancehall vibes, the new school representing proper dub with the Jinx In dub Steppa remix of "Nu Beginningz" and the legendary Adrian Sherwood delivering his remix of "UK All Stars In Dub ". There's a lot to get through on here. "London Dungeons Dub (Young Warrior remix - Son Of Jah Shaka)" brings more of the purist dub vibes back again, DJ Madd's remix of "Jah Warriors In Dub" is no doubt the most fierce modern vibe on here while "Nu Beginningz Dubwise (Mungos Hi Fi remix)" goes for the more smoky, low-slung vibes. It one Jah!

Review: We're lucky we grasp a release a year from Karma's gnarly paws. But when we do, we always pay attention. Here are three reminders why. "Terrorist" wades into the fray with pneumatic beats that are reminiscent of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack. Foggy, misty and laced with a crucial Reggae vocal sample, it has a tsunami-like effect through a big system as waves of dubspace wash over the crowd. "Cha" continues the pneumatic rhythm feels. But this time with a persistent techno-like 4x4 that's wrapped in tight layers of warped subs. "Vacant Mind" neatly counters the energy of "Cha" with a pensive slo-mo march into the foggy void. All elements and textures woozily working together to create somnambulant momentum, it's Karma at his most meditative. Already sold out on limited vinyl, this is a seriously key release.

Review: Burial is back. Yes, after four years away, he's not only ambushed us with THAT collab with Four Tet and Thom Yorke, but now he springs a three track EP on Kode9's Hyperdub imprint upon us too! The eponymous "Street Halo" is a delectable, crackling 4/4 roller with buckets of emotion and texture. In other words, it's the Burial of "Archangel" fame, which we all know and love. "NYC" is the urban retort, bristling with echoes of thunder, murmurs of traffic in the distance, jingling keys, it symbolizes the minutiae of everyday existence and is underpinned by slouching beats with a small, eerie and discernibly mournful voice wailing on top. Final track, "Stolen Dog" pairs smudgy piano keys with terse, ticking beats, all shrouded in an ethereal shimmer, much like Burial himself.

Review: At long last, French crew Visages drop their debut album and it's a powerful blend of tempos and styles, weaved together class and murky dark sonic mastery. From the woozy, dubstep swagger of the opener 'MK Ultra' to the stunning harmonics and dreamy soul of the finale 'Gaia' by way of a whole range of emotions in between, this is an exceptional debut album that says so much over so few tracks. High five to Visages and 1985.

Militant bass vibes and deathly percussive stabs all-round with this new four-way compilation from a bunch of newcomers, and it's all very much in the typical spirit of the label. "Fear Spud" by D-Operation Drop is like a war march guided by a band of low frequencies, Iskeletor's "Charizard" is a wild, venomous slice of neuro-funk with a broken beat, while "S.90" by Saule is a more typical dubstep anthem a-la DMZ, and Bukez Finezt goes more acoustic with his harmonious bass experiment tagged "False Friends". Bad.

Review: Reviewed By Duploc:
Today we're inspecting the construction site of Artikal Music UK's next project. Founder J:Kenzo employed eleven professional and highly skilled architects to carefully design, build and create a handcrafted compilation full of music he admires. As J:Kenzo explains: "The tracks included were filtered through from artists that have previously released on Artikal or have some connection with myself either being played on my Rinse FM shows or live sets". Considering the quality of each and every track, only two years of fabrication to finish off this product is remarkably short. Volume One of "The Architects" reflects J:Kenzo's refined taste in dubstep and drum and bass. On the 2 x 12" record, you'll find some absolute masterpieces from amongst others D-Operation Drop, Causa, Compa, Argo, DubDiggerz and J:Kenzo himself. The Architects' series, a yearly showcase filled with content from the label's artists plus VIP and remixes as well as bringing through new talent, will make the foundations of dubstep shake undoubtedly.

Heal - (6:05) 140 BPM Hot
Rumble Fish - (4:46) 145 BPM
Flee In The Fog (feat Dubtro) - (4:36) 143 BPM
Review: Throughout his musical career, the unpredictable Karma has spread his tracks across different genres, and from drum and bass to house and dubstep, he's been capable of reinventing himself on a regular basis. For this latest Innamind Recordings episode, the producer is in half-step mode, channeling his fury behind the mixing board into the deep and subby bounces of "Heal", before moving onto darker and more pulsating territories on the excellent "Rumble Fish" - surely this week's no.1 dubstep cut. "Flee In The Fog" features Dubtro, and the dup conjure a foreboding picture with their mild pads, watery beats and lo-fi sonics. Excellent stuff.

Operator - (4:35) 87 BPM
Review: Finally... Someone's written a track about your mum: "Operator" is a sweet, sassy slice of modern jungle with wounding slo-mo kicks decorated with pretty splashes of amens and trimmed with delicious sub bass. "Fatty Batty" meanwhile, which is definitely not written about your mum, is a ridiculously funky contemporary bass jam with thundering kicks, cheeky horns and a groove so chunky you could feed a family of four for a year... And still have leftovers.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.
