Review: Following a productive 2016 in which he delivered superb material on labels including Dekmantel, Clone and Perc Tracks, Randomer returns to L.I.E.S for the first time since 2015. "Smokin" is a typically bombastic and bass-heavy affair, with the producer combining his usual metallic, industrial-tinged sounds and spacey electronics with a killer electro groove. It's little less than a genuine club roller that achieves a perfect balance between rhythmic funkiness and trippy eccentricity. you will then get the creepy, echo-laden hits, horror chic and panicked rhythms of "Velvet" and the dense, dusty late night techno throb of "Rye". While neither of the these tracks can match the thrills of "Smokin", they're both excellent mixing tools.

Review: Berlin-based Korean Peggy Gou has been surprisingly quiet since first bursting onto the scene back in 2016. Here, she returns to action having graduated from Technicolour to parent label Ninja Tune. Many may already have heard EP standout "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)", a percussively ambidextrous beast based around a bouncy, off-skilter, snare-heavy rhythm track. It has been much discussed online after Gou included it her recent Resident Advisor podcast. Then you'll find tracks representative of her developing style, which draws together elements of European deep house, electro, early '90s U.S house, the rubbery disco eccentricity of Maurice Fulton and the instinctive polyrhythms more often found in traditional African music.

Review: Over the years, Joey Negro has delivered compilations focusing on a wide range of styles and sub-genres, including soulful disco, Italo-house, early U.S disco-rap, and Washington D.C go-go. Now he's turned his attention to electro, the style that did more than any other to inspire Britain's first wave of DJs and dance music producers. This "personal collection" contains a mixture of stone-cold scene classics - Aleem's Leroy Burgess-fronted "Release Yourself", Hashim's scene anthem "Al Naayafiysh (The Soul)" and Dwayne Omar's P-funk influenced "This Party's Jam Packed" - alongside deeper selections such as Kosmic Light Force's brilliant - and hard to find - L.A electrofunk classic "Mysterious Waves", and The Russell Brothers thrillingly intergalactic "The Party Scene".

Review: After breaking through with some powerful EPs on Night Slugs, Girl Unit is back to continue what he started. Interestingly, the grimey element in his earlier output has been replaced by a screamingly loud electro influence, positioned in the kind of snappy funk favoured by EDMX and his Breakin Records posse. From "Ensemble (Club Mix)" to "Plaza", the sharp edges of the synth work chafe against crisp drum machine workouts, leaving six cold crush bangers in their wake. It's something of a departure for Girl Unit, but he's absolutely nailed the target sound with tracks that will absolutely tear up the dance.

Pulsar - (7:40) 126 BPM
Oedo 808 - (5:28) 130 BPM
Blue Moon Tree - (7:52) 125 BPM Hot
Review: UK producer Matt Cutler aka Lone delivers the final instalment in his Ambivert Tools series of EPs. Like previous editions, The London based producer borrows respectfully from classic house aesthetics while decorating them with a vibrant and contemporary edge - much like the tracks released on his acclaimed Magicwire imprint. The evocative and breakbeat driven "Pulsar" conjures up memories of the late '90s, sounding like an excerpt from Sasha & Digweed's seminal Northern Exposure series. "Oedo 808" goes down a solid electro bass route and the sensual latin house flair of "Blue Moon Tree" intoxicates you with its shimmering chord progressions and hypnotic bongo rhythms.

Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the "Digeridoo" era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.

Review: It's been a while since Clone last mined the undersea vaults of peerless Detroit electro/techno legends Drexciya. You'd expect the quality to dip a little on this fourth and final volume in the series, but Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller IV is every bit as essential as its predecessors. It's packed with far-sighted, next-level moments, from the bleak drum machine rhythms and gnarled electronics of "Hydro Cubes" and intense acid funk of "Aquatic Bata Particles", to the spine-tingling techno futurism of "Black Sea", the pure melodic joy of the rush-inducing "Sighting In The Abyss" and "Unknown Journey VII". A fitting finale to this excellent series from Clone.

Review: There's a reason that Drexciya are considered by many to be the most influential of all Detroit techno and electro acts. Aside from their addictive combination of mysticism and mystery, Gerald Donald and James Stinson made fabulous music - genuinely otherworldly electronic compositions that have stood the test of time. Whether you're a confirmed fan or Drexciyan novice, Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller should be essential listening. The first of four collections of classic material to be released by Clone, it gathers together their brilliant early '90s works in newly remastered form. Bristling with raw analogue funk and far-sighted techno, it's a timely reminder of their immense talents. Simply essential.

Review: With an ever-strong commitment to their very unique brand of modern electronic dance music, the Night Slugs posse are rounded up once again for a stocktake on the follow up to the successful Night Slugs Allstars compilation. It's only with a chance to reflect such as this you can appreciate the range that falls neatly into the Night Slugs remit. At one turn you can be doused in the blinding sunshine of Girl Unit's cheery electro as on "Ensemble (Club Mix)", or at the next be confronted with the staggered stab frenzy of Helix's somewhat ironically named "Drum Track". Try reaching them without being thrown by Bok Bok's 31st century grime madness or Lil Silva's hyper-kinetic throwdown of mechanical psychedelia and you might have a chance of getting a handle on the label as a whole.

Review: Mexican merchants of dark disco, Duro, return this week with label co-chief Mateo Gonzalez aka Theus Mago, teaming up with Tyu (Tony Ullmann) on new offering "Piel De Oso" featuring Spanish rapper Livia. The entrancing, slo-mo exotica of the title track is complimented by some great remixes by Rina X Benji up first, who pick up the pace with some added snare rolls reminiscent of a certain Plastikman anthem, while Moisees & Zea's perspective takes the track into the peak time with pumping bass and a tighter rhythm section.

Review: Second time around for Syncbeat's "Music", an influential early UK electro workout made by members of legendary Manchester outfit Broken Glass and mixed by local hero Greg Wilson. This surprise Running Back reissue includes all three of Wilson's original 1984 mixes. There's the wonderfully deep and glassy eyed Afro-electro/synth-pop fusion of the Original Mix, the Bobby 'O' Orlando-influenced shuffle of the "Remix" and the stripped-back, delay-laden edit brilliance of the dub style "More Music". Fresh reworks come from German house stalwart Boris Dlugosch who tidies it up and beefs it up whilst retaining the loved-up vibes and chanted vocals of the '84 original. His two DJ tool style revisions - the bodypopping "Bonus Beats" and sunrise-friendly "Tribal Reprise" - are also superb.

Review: This seven-track collection gathers together the vinyl-only cuts from Georg Levin's 2010 album Everything Must Change, adding various alternate versions and instrumentals. The title track is the former Sonar Kollektiv mainstay's best track since "When I'm With You", his impeccable 2000 debut. It has just the right mix of heartfelt soul, electro-funk swing and smooth dancefloor bump. It's presented here in both vocal and instrumental versions, with the former standing out. Stevie Wonder cover "That Girl" is good fun, too, especially the Dub Mix, which throws in some sprightly house-not-house drums and killer synth bass hooks for a more floor friendly vibe. The EP closes with vocal and instrumental versions of the ultra-smooth "I Need To Understand".

Review: A decade ago, the Dekmantel crew threw their first party in the Dutch capital; two years later the record label followed. For their decennial anniversary, Dekmantel Records are releasing 10 very special EPs over the course of 2017. The fourth release in their celebratory series is a collection of new material from some of the label's favourite artists. This fourth edition brings together their love of electro and wave influenced grooves by the likes of Los Angeles electro legend The Egyptian Lover, who serves up the aptly titled "This That Old School" which proves to all the bandwagon jumping wannabes what 'real' electro is. Staying on that retro flavoured tip are the Antinote affiliated Syracuse & Epsilove doing some acid infused analogue jack by way of pop on "Scubatomic Love". Finally, they look locally with the Red Light Radio affiliated/Rush Hour 'analogue adventurist' Interstellar Funk: who pursues some retro/balearic vibes on the sublime "EFX Harmonix"

Review: This latest chapter on Man Power's Me Me Me sees Bristolian Christophe step up to the plate, a producer probably best known for his superb releases on Futureboogie, but who has also previously featured on the label as a remixer and contributor to last year's charity compilation. His new thriller "Rok The Hall" is a jacking and acidified thriller of the retroactive kind - think classic Trax Records. It then receives a very Mr Fingers sounding remix by Danish artist Johnny Aux. The TB-303 antics return on the euphoric and emotive energy of "Like That" which also receives a worthy rendition - this time by the ever reliable Frank Butters.

Review: Few electronic acts could easily sustain three expansive 'best of' compilations, but then Detroit techno-electro fusionists Drexciya weren't your average electronic artists. In the space of little more than 12 EPs and a handful of albums, released in a ten-year burst between 1992 and 2002, James Stinson and Gerald Donald did more to push electronic music forwards than many of their Motor City peers. This third retrospective in Clone's excellent Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller series expands on the first two volumes, swimming between atmospheric IDM ("Aqua Worm Hole", "Vampire Island"), balls-deep techno workouts ("Nautilus", "Intensified Magnetron") and shimmering future electro (the futuristic Kraftwerk vibes of "Aquabahn").

Review: That one of this year's best techno albums has been made by a Dutch dubstep artist and is issued on a label owned by an LA hip-hop figure says a lot about the increasingly blurred boundaries within which it operates. Ironically, the backbone for Ghost People is the purist-influenced Berghain sound that has dominated techno production in recent years. In fairness to Martyn, he makes no secret of this, even going as far to equating his European DJ dates to sonic fact-finding missions that informed the album's direction. However, it would be a mistake to assume that Ghost People is merely a replica of unflinching Berlin techno. Instead, Martyn uses it as a backdrop to tease out a range of directions. The title track contains references to the heady rush of rave, while "Twice As" revisits the Dutch producer's love of Detroit techno as sonic blips and spine-tingling melodies are married to more garage-style shuffling beats - perhaps the track's title is a nod to the London 2-step institution. On "Popgun", the producer briefly revisits lurching dubstep territories and there's even a tribute of sorts to Vangelis on the glistening synths of "Bauplan". That Ghost People covers so much ground while remaining close to the filtered rumble of tracks like "Horror Vacui" is an impressive testament to Martyn's supernatural production powers.

With dub trailing atmospheres streaking across the face of tracks like "The Light", all three here surf the skywaves of Detroit techno and Chicago house, lifting key notes and aquatic stabs from somewhere deeper in between too. Ripping key-tars and twangs bring the funk in "Volpi Polari" with "Fluto" going to Eiffel tower heights of Jean Michelle Jarre trance and '90s warehouse beats to lift you high.

Review: The second Sound Signature repress of the week offers a chance to re-assess the moment that the wider world was introduced to the talents of one of Detroit's most loved selectors. Released back in 1999, the Essential Selections Vol. 1 EP saw Theo collaborate with a certain Marcellus Pittman across three cuts that still sound as vibrant today. "Night Of The Sagitarius" has the loose drum arrangements and gritty low end that will appeal to contemporary ears, but it's also augmented by an almost chilling sense of melody. "Selector's Theme" is the pair in introspective mood whilst "African Roots" belongs in the canon of all time Theo greats.

Review: Analogue synth fetishist Andrew Meecham is back in action, delivering another EP full of wayward electronic treats under the now familiar Emperor Machine alias. Like its predecessor, release back in December 2016, 2500 Volume 2 is full of off-kilter treats that sound like the product of late night hardware jams. Check, for example, the fizzing, intergalactic electronics, bass-heavy thrust and acid-flecked drive of intense opener "U.M.O" and the John Carpenter-goes-to-Croatia synth-scape "Back to Bali". Arguably best of all, though, is the feverish late night workout "Africa V2", in which drum machine poly-rhythms are peppered with mind-bending noises and foreboding modular motifs. Wolf Muller's remix of that track, which blends Meecham's wild electronics with the German producer's own organic drums, is arguably even better.

Review: Next up on Dekmantel is Jered Phillip aka Jex Opolis with this highly engaging EP. One of the brains behind the Good Timin' label, Phillip's music takes inspiration from 80s boogie, electro and Italo Disco. Those elements all come together seamlessly on the title track, where crashing drums and a pulsating bass provide the basis for irresistible synth melodies. It makes for a vivid, expansive track. Meanwhile, "Desolation" sees Phillip focus his efforts more closely on updating the sounds of late 70s Italy, fusing staccato snares with irresistible melodic flourishes. The vocal version, with its nasal drawl, sees Jex Opolis edge closer to Fred Ventura territory.

Review: Following Eps for 20:20 Vision and Freerange, Whitesquare aka Maurice Uzzan makes his debut for Life And Death. This release draws on a number of sources for inspiration; on the title track, the bass is influenced by early 90s house, while the acid line is redolent of Josh Wink at his finest. The dreamy vocal samples and break beats on "Not Moving" could have come from a San Fran free party, while "Jasmine" is more grounded. Led by an earthy acid line and a stepping rhythm, it's one of the more functional tracks on this release - until DJ Tennis gets his hands on it and turns it into a rumbling, 303-led roller.

Review: It's been quite a year for Posthuman: apart from releasing a series of EPs on labels like Shipwrec and Balkan Vinyl, they also put out an excellent long player, Mutant City Acid. Rounding off their year is The Snake Bites Twice, their debut on Scottish imprint Craigie Knowes. While "Cobra Structure" and "Polywater Acid" deliver more of the same low-slung acid that they are synonymous with, the EP also throws up some surprises. The primal jacking "Down 2 Jakk" features psychedelic rave riffs, while on the aptly named "Steal the Show", they take inspiration from bleep techno and hardcore - check those piano stabs - to deliver a wonderfully moody, evocative cut.
