Katakana Edits Vol 44

Night Strangers - (4:47) 116 BPM Hot
On Fire - (6:20) 117 BPM
Review: The honour of curating the 44th instalment of Katakana's Edits series has fallen on Disco Funk Spinner, a much respected re-edit guy whose work has appeared on the likes of Midnight Riot, Disco Fruit and Sound Exhibitions. Here though he only manages to provide two jams, but it's quality, not quantity, right? First up we get "Night Strangers" which takes loops from Candi Staton's Bee Gees cover (Nights On Broadway) and adds an accelerated disco house tempo and subtle but funky embellishments. On the digital flip is "On Fire", a clever rework of Peggy Lee's indestructible classic, Fever. Hot stuff!

Review: 62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: Four excellent new funk/soul/disco bombs from the Whiskey Disco label, with some surprising covers and peerless edits for your aural delectation. Anthony Mansfield sets about deconstructing a fresh cover of "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, while fans of Philly/Al Green-esque slow '70s funk will love Cosmic Boogie's soft-touch edit of "How Can You Say Goodbye". Rayko ups the tempo a little with his mix of the boogie wonder "S&M (Sexy Music), while WD label-head Sleazy McQueen has a lot of fun with Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do", looping up instrumental sections just right for a new perspective on this classic Stevie joint.

Review: Crate digging in the Northern Soul scene is the gift that keeps on giving - an endless quest for rarer and rarer gems. Here Beatnik present a new collection that features nine classic Motown and Northern Soul cuts which have been sensitively retouched by some contemporary talent. Highlights include the celebratory, fizzy soul jam "Soul On Fire" by Shaka Loves You (yes, the one sampled by Beyonce), a Junkie XL-style makeover of Martha & The Vandellas on "Nowhere To Go" and Mak & Mr Bristow's muscled up take on The Rascals - "Olympic Lovin".

Review: For their latest statement of intent, Bristol's nu-funk troubadours The Allergies have found a new home at Goodgroove. They've consummated the relationship in fine style too, going a whopping four times in the process. "Special People" is a roaring breaky funker that could easily be mid-70s O'Jays. Elsewhere we get daisy age hip hop jam "React", vintage Stax-style stomper "As We Do Our Thing" and guitar-led rap "Feel Alright". We're glad they're back!

Review: Here they are at it again, fusing, twisting and sampling all the hits, obscurities and bangers you've come to love over the years; be they hip hop, electro, pop, funk or rock. Notorious BIG makes an appearance on this compilations opener while JLO vocals and dirty electro can be found on "Get Right". Scale down the tracklist and you'll come across J5, old school funk and flutes to The Champs - Tequila!

Mashed Up Funk: Vol 7

Hot Start - (2:39) 127 BPM
Shimmy Strut - (3:09) 136 BPM
Tutto Dreams - (4:20) 126 BPM Hot
Change My Bucket - (3:08) 152 BPM
Review: Four more bootleg blends from the Mashed Up Funk series, which expertly layers well known acapellas over brilliant funk tracks to consistently provide priceless "WTF?" moments in dj sets. First up is Hot Start which glues the vocals from The Prodigy's Firestarter over the Blaxploiation theme Hot Wheels by Badder Than Evil. A B-Boy staple (that showed up on the Chemical's "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" mix), it sounds even more bad ass with Keith sneering "twisted firestart-ahh" over the top. Shimmy Strut welds together ODB's classic Shimmy Shimmy Ya over a recent cover of The Meters' Cissy Strut, and puts some seriously funky swagger under the immortal chorus "Ooh baby I like it raw". Tutto Dreams fuses together a Tutto Matto track with the Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams acapella - a nice twist since it's usually the instrumental parts of Lennox's and Stewart's perennial classic that get the mash-up treatment. The superb clash of the ice cold vocals with the warm organic drums and wah-wah guitars has to be heard to be believed. Rounding off the set is Change My Bucket, which takes K-OS' Crabbuckit acapella and marries it to the Stereo MC's mix of Quannum's I Changed My Mind - still a Nu-Funk anthem after all these years and cleverly recontextualised here. All four tracks are well-crafted, perfectly matched and will kick off a party with ease - just remember to act like you're laying down the acapellas yourself when you play them out!

Review: Featurecast flexes hard into the crates right here: digging deep over 20 years of party breaks, he's put together the definitive journey of funk with the refreshing devil may care attitude we've come to expect. His selection excavations are here for all the benefit from... The Wiseguys's lesser-spotted jam "One For The Ladies", Lack Of Afro's horn-melting "The Outsider", Max Sedgley's sugar-sweet "Happy", Flevans' Afrofunk shake-up "12 Apostles" and Featurecast and Aldo Vanucci's 2008 hoe-down stomper "Blue Grassed Devil" are just some are just some of the floor-matured classics amid the 25 cuts on offer here. And that's before we even get to awesome mix. Don't dillydally on this one.

Herbest Moon - "Blow Your Body" (Deep Space dub) - (8:27) 120 BPM

Review: Given his encyclopedic knowledge of music, you'd expect any compilation put together by Bill Brewster to be full of unlikely gems and lesser-known anthems. That's certainly the case with After Dark, the first in a new DJ-focused series from the Late Night Tales camp. From start to finish, Brewster's selections are spot on, from the lowdown, slo-mo disco oddness of Sheffield chanteuse Marti Caine's "Love The Way You Love Me" and wide-eyed, acid-laden kosmiche of Coober Peder University Band's "Moon Plain", to the dirty electrofunk of Zed Bias's "Koolade" (featuring Toddla T, of all people) and mid'80s percussion fest of Martin Kershaw's "Keep On Pokin". If that wasn't enough, Brewster has also unearthed a decent Jamiroquai record. The wonders never cease.

Review: The Katakana edit express thunders on with their 11th installment of party breaks. This time the overwhelming vibe is of retro soul, jazz and swing. The latter is handled with a Latin influence on "I'll Be A God Man" and "Lovely TV" by DJ Clairvo, while the amazingly-named DJ Oli Garch provides a breaky, swingy version of jazz standard "Summertime. Lastly Timewrap opts for some Cuban-tinged grooves on "Miami", as well as a cheeky retweak of The Velvelettes' Motown classic "He Was Really Saying Something".

Don't Stop (Reprise) - (2:07) 81 BPM
Review: More from Faze Action member Robin Lee's offshoot Andromeda Orchestra project, whose throbbing and forthright releases have previously joined the dots between revivalist disco and the synthesizer-driven world of Italo-disco. In its original form (track three), "Don't Stop" is an authentically produced riff on the K.I.D track of the same name rich in swooping, razor-sharp strings, Clavinet-happy disco grooves and glassy-eyed female vocals. It comes accompanied by a stellar peak-time remix from Lee's old pal Ray Mang - all layered drum fills, swirling noises and jangling piano riffs - and a spacey, beat-free ambient "Reprise". Bonus cut "Kano Line Dance", a funky mid-tempo shuffler that joins the dots between boogie, jazz-funk and P-funk, is also rather tasty.

Review: A ridiculously fun remix package of Danish breakbeat guru Badboe. For the uninitiated, Badboe has developed a style that has clear echoes of 60s and 70s funk yet still fits seamlessly into the modern musical landscape. This man has dipped his toe in almost any genre you care to name - from house to trance; hardcore to trip-hop. On Break The Funk we see his superlative breakbeat jams remixed by the genre's cognoscenti, with the insouciant Fuzzbox Inc remix of "Lose Your Funky Self" and the junkyard percussion on the Pulp Fusion reshape of "Funky Intro" among the many highlights on offer here.

Review: KS French and Mr Given Raw are like two peas in a pod. A disco-shaped pod. Here they join forces again, both providing both solo tracks and a joint collaboration too. Label boss KS French plonks a platform show on the dancefloor first with the tight James Brown-sampling funk of "Still On the Case". Then MGR takes over for two sizzlers - the catchy soul-pop lament "Beggin You" and the psychedelic soul stomp of "Funky Mama". Finally the titans clash on the phased disco-boogie joy of "Never Give You Up". Good times.

Review: Fresh-faced funkateer Manjah steps up to the party-hardy Katakana series, and does so with distinction. It's a game of two halves as the first two cuts are dedicated to chanteuses Smokey Robinson and Donna Hightower. Both powered by swashbuckling 60s funk riffs, these are authentic edits done with true creativity. Later on in the EP we head West to the Caribbean as Manjah gets his skank on with Dancehall Queen. Those with a penchant for Greek taverna flavours should hold tight for the rustic groove on "Orienta Patria". Nice work.

Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Review: As ever, the Bomb Strikes imprint delivers an awesome package to us with this brand new 25 track compilation entitled 'Funk N' Beats Vol. 5', To be honest, it's exactly what it says on the tin as The Allergies head up waves and waves of funkadelic rhythms and crunchy riffs. For us the highlights have to be the futuristic drum processing and subtle percussive movements of 'Loose Gardner' from Flevans, along with the classic breakbeat fusion of 'Fire' remixed by Smoove but originally produced by the Renegades Of Jazz. With the sheer depth of the project it's easy to get lost within the tracklisting, which is always a good sign on a large scale compilation.

Not sure what ol' blue eyes would make of it all, but with breaky rejigs of perennial faves by the likes of Sam & Dave, Dylan, Don Covay and Area Code 615 (the Old Grey Whistle Test theme), we're sure dancefloors up and down the country will give it the big thumbs up.

Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

What does separate it from most of their previous releases though, is the size: this one clocks in with a whopping 16 tracks! As usual it's a funk-heavy selection, of which highlights include an organ-led, 60s style makeover for the Jacksons on "Dave Jackson", the P-Funkisms of "Party Sweep", the Yazoo-twisting of "Go Well" and the Snoop Dogg-goes-ska laid back grooves of "Cantaloop Dog".

Review: Out of the Basement are Steve Leggat and James Ellis, both players in Manchester's music scene. Now they've hooked up with the El Diablo Social Club boys to finally deliver two much sought after edits. Both these tunes have been floating around in various forms for a while, but now they've been spruced up for a 'proper' release. "Take Me With You" layers an old soul vocal over new punk-funky live instrumentation for a slick head nodder. "Brother's Dub" meanwhile, is a slinky slo-mo edit of the Brothers Johnson cover of Shuggie Otis anthem "Strawberry Letter 23".

Ranging from the ballsy swing of "Jungle Strut" to the more salubrious, well-oiled slinks and winks of "Start Movin'", once again FF's EP lives up to its title in every way... Climaxing with a smoky-eyed shake up of Dusty Springfield's "Spooky". Sexy.

Review: If life teaches you anything it's to expect the unexpected. Here the mighty re-edit label Katakana deliver their 42nd instalment of scapel jobs. However, this time, rather than have a specific producer curate an EP, they've shaken up the formula and delivered a compilation of edits. There's a whopping 24 reworks to enjoy too, many thrills and spills, but our favourites include Morlack's explosive drum-lead MJ cover, "Don't Stop", Mister Vagz' corny 60s mash-up "Love Me Venus" and Dim Zach & Deem's baggy rework of the Happy Monday's sublime "Loose Fit".

Another familiar favourite - check the snaking sax line, as sampled by The 45 King on B-Boy classic "The 900 Number" - is given a dancefloor touch-up on "Blow Ya Woopie", while "Get Up Brother" turns a cover version of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" into a deep, bassy, fluid house jam. Finally, there's more bumpin' rare funk business on the ludicrously bottom-heavy "Stay Excited".

Sono Rhizmo' - "Do Your Stuff" - (4:00) 112 BPM Hot
Review: With this, their latest split release, Resence Records prove that there's always love for a party-focused mash-up. First up, "Feelin' Roll" sees Panama Cardoon mash up Mr Scruff and Wayne Marshall to create what they claim to be 'a guaranteed hands-in-the-air, boom-bap bounce drenched in organ riffs and island vibes', and who are we to argue? "Do Your Stuff" meanwhile is only part mash-up, with Resence's very own Sono Rhizmo reworking Miami funk-soul dude Mr Perculator (aka Perk Badger) for a trumpets-and-back-beat vintage-modern party sound.

Review: With the catalogue that the Cuttin' It Fine team have both assembled and keep adding to, it's hard to expect anything less than exceptional with every release. They deliver another set of four breakbeat belters, courtesy of both El Bomba & Roast Beatz. First up, El Bomba delivers a dancefloor-ready funk out in 'Take A Break', a lively combo of sharp drum slaps and lip-curling basslines, before Roast Beatz the energy with the groovy guitar plucks and singalong vocals of 'Party Over Here'. Back to El Bomba next as the classic sounding guitar melodies and unpredictable drum shakes of 'Bronco Funk' tone down the madness a tad, before rounding off with anthem-like arrangements of 'Get On Down' from Roast Beatz, boasting a showstopper of a bassline, draped in pleasing horn switches and tidy vocal chops for good measure.
