Review: Should you want to turn your place into a swinging cantina let Beatnik City's first release of The Latin Leaks be your soundtrack, and slam those tequila's to "Uhh! Ahh". There's some sampled Wu Tang thrown in among a clamour of drums in "Shimmy Cumbia", while tempos are lowered in "Lift Ma Soul". For some electro-swing vibes check out "Golden Boy" and get tropical on "Real Smooth". Consider your next fiesta sorted!

Sono Rhizmo' - "Voodoo" - (3:52)
Review: This thirty eighth release by Resense is actually a split EP, divided between Switzerland's Bandura who fly in Trinidad's The Duke for their first 'calypso mash-up', "Calypso Invasion" and the label's own Sono Rhizmo who updates that cool 50s voodoo jazz sound on the appropriately named "Voodoo". Hot stuff!

Review: Label newcomer Canopy Records, compiled and conceptualised by label head Sumosui, sends out some super Afro transmission for this first release. 'Africa No 1' is a single that features a superb tune from Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria, which was first put out locally in 1987. It is by the late great Nigerian reggae artist Ehi Duncan and his The Africa Army Express band and next to the uplifting original are two new mixes from Captain Planet. He brings the tune into the modern day with some tight key, horn and synth sounds for the first mix, and the second is a slower, more mid-tempo bit of afro disco. Lovely vibes.

Review: For this, their inaugural release, Beatnik City round up a pan-international squad (including British, Italians and Brazilians) in what proves to be a great homage to 'the world's sexiest city'. There's seven tracks here - all of which look back to the hazy golden 1960s and conjures up vintage Copacabana vibes through a combination of salsa and Latin loungey sounds and melodies all welded to tougher modern breaks for a contemporary slant.

Review: Last year Greek label Carnibal took a risk and released a compilation featuring not their electro-swing and hip-hop sounds, but tunes with a Latin American influence. The risk paid off and now we have a new EP from DJ Inko. Originally one of the artists featured on the aforementioned release, here Inko has the freedom of four tracks to showcase his talents. It's a healthily, varied listen too, covering chirpy party anthems ("Te Quiero"), brassy Mexicana romps ("Abekabe"), feisty Brazilian house ("Mi So Bailar") and best of all the darkly hypnotic jungle body music of "Zulu".

Review: Canada's premiere afro-Latin fusionists Souljazz Orchestra return with their ninth album, Resistance, which arrives a decade after they first announced themselves to the world with the dazzling debut Uprooted. That album was issued on their own Funk Manchu Records, but the collective are firmly within the Strut Records bosom these days with Resistance their fourth album for the UK stronghold. Never a band to tread water, this 10 track collection finds the Souljazz Orchestra exploring new territory on record, explicitly the French Caribbean and Francophone West African influences that have been key to the band from their earliest days. What's most impressive here is the band's sheer versatility with saxman Ray Murray, percussionist Marielle Rivard, drummer Philippe Lafreniere and keyboardist Pierre Chretien all taking on lead vocal duties as Resistance progresses.

Review: Palov & Panama Cardoon launched Greek label Carnibal in 2012 and have been successfully 'shuffling the traditional sounds with the modern beats' ever since. Here on their 10th release they shift focus from the electro-swing and hip-hop approach of previous transmissions, concentrating on the sounds of Latin America instead. It's a tropical and topical romp too, with highlights including the hypnotic vintage cumbia haze of DJ Inko's "La Cadencia", the fizzing electro reggaeton of Vida G's "Cumbida" and the skewed disco-funk of "Orere" by Umoja.

Review: Rather than simply bask in the adulation from their recent 'best of' compilation, this Italian duo are back at work, this time delivering "Skeewiff In Brazil", a 14 track collection of 'bozza novas, sambas and Latin beats". With explanations like this there's no prizes for guessing what it sounds like (fuss-free Latin tinged party fare), but they still throw in some surprises including the dubstep-influenced "Like A Bossa" and the hip-hop of "Blame It On Rio".

Eye Nyam Nam 'A' Mensuro (Henrik Schwarz dub) - (7:28) 124 BPM
Review: Henrik Schwarz's surprise remix of "Ene Nyame Nam 'A' Mensuro' - a suitably obscure collaboration between Ghanian highlife legends Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas, originally released somewhere round the turn of the '80s on a ridiculously rare LP - has arguably been one of the underground dancefloor hits of the summer. A ten-minute chunk of loose and languid, Highlife-deep house fusion, Schwarz has cleverly combined sections of the sweet-as-you-like original with his own atmospheric electronics and tech-house influenced beats. The veteran German producer also provides a dub, which strips out the vocal and allows his electronics, Taylor's delicious guitars and the original's punchy horns a little more room to breathe.

Review: Following on from the release of her debut album last year and its 'Remixes' counterpart in May, Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm now returns with two fresh tracks that once again showcase female vocalists from around the world. 'Nina' finds her collaborating with transnational duo Farafi, while the accompanying 'Sisters' is graced by pan-African supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique. Both tracks are rooted firmly in traditional African music, with 'Nina' a percussive, chanted affair while 'Sisters' has a more lilting, singsong kinda vibe, but 'Nina' also gets a brace of more house-oriented remixes courtesy of Tel Aviv's Elado (a Razor-N-Tape regular) and Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project.

Tropical Sant - (3:54) 124 BPM
Review: This latest installment in the 'Katakana Edits' series draws pretty much entirely from global music, which makes trying to identify the source material nigh-on impossible! Still, there's a kind of 60s/70s lounge-y vibe to opener 'Besoka', augmented by wave sounds, while 'Hong Kong' is a more Mexican/Latin-sounding affair that'd be best served in the summer sunshine. The fluttering 'Kikiribu' again has a Latin feel, with a chanted vocal this time, while 'Tropical Sant' maintains a similar MO but has more of a hazy, psychedelic vibe about it. One for the more eclectic DJs that like to mix up different world rhythms.

Yeah Alright (Lego Funk Touch) - (6:16) 105 BPM
Review: It was high time for a new instalment of Lego Edits, the new frontrunner in our favourite disco reincarnations, and this is especially true when the tunes in questions are already among our ist of absolute classics! The infamous "African Rhythms", by a certain artist that we can't specify on here, is reworked into a tasty, jazzy sort of stepper carrying a chunky groove full of sweet, kinetic percussion for the dancefloor. The Lego Funk Touch version is reserved for the "Yeah Alright" edit, a more intricate funk nugget taking into account everything from samba through to jazz and even a little bit of that house edge that we all need right about now. Party tools for all!

Much like the previous outing, the second instalment of the series contains a gorgeous load of organic percussion and carnival-esque vocals; the shining moments reside in the piano-led "Espinas" and the reggaeton-leaning "It's A Pity". Review: Crate-digging reissue specialists Africa Seven has decided to flip the script on this fantastic album, asking a range of contemporary producers to "re-imagine" a string of rare soul, funk, Afrobeat and disco jams. Thrillingly for those who remember the original West London broken beat scene, the comp contains some killer "bruk" revisions - not least Silkie's brilliantly fluid and groovy take on Ekambi Brillant's "Soul Castle" and EVM's rolling, Bugz in the Attic style revision of M'Bamina's "Mosi Zole". Elsewhere, Appleblim delivers a typically fuzzy and bass heavy rework of Sorry Bamba, Dj Food chops up Sookie's organ-laden funk slammer "Rhythm on Rhythm" an IDM heroes Plaid join the dots between vintage African jazz and woozy electronica. In a word: superb.

Review: Oumou Sangare's most recent album, 2017's Mogoya, was a fine collection of heartfelt songs in the traditional Malian wassoulou style. Here, it's given the remix treatment, with an impressive cast list of producers taking it in turns to provide their own distinctive interpretations. We were naturally drawn to some of the contributions from high profile producers, with the Tony Allen style Afrobeat rub of "Yere Faga" by Natureboy (AKA DJ Nature) and Auntie Flo's sublime version of "Djoukourou" - all gentle West African beats, sparkling synthesizers and life-affirming vocals - hitting home particularly hard. St Germain's warming Afro-house take on "Fadjamou" and Sampha's bass-heavy, 8-bit interpretation of "Minata Waraba" are also superb.

Review: Mexican merchants of dark disco, Duro, return this week with label co-chief Mateo Gonzalez aka Theus Mago, teaming up with Tyu (Tony Ullmann) on new offering "Piel De Oso" featuring Spanish rapper Livia. The entrancing, slo-mo exotica of the title track is complimented by some great remixes by Rina X Benji up first, who pick up the pace with some added snare rolls reminiscent of a certain Plastikman anthem, while Moisees & Zea's perspective takes the track into the peak time with pumping bass and a tighter rhythm section.

Eye Nyam Nam 'A' Mensuro (Henrik Schwarz Blend) - (9:23) 62 BPM
Review: The unstoppable Strut label, usually associated to outstanding reissue anthologies, welcome a surprise package to their catalogue, and boy is this special. Ebo Taylor, one of Ghana's most prolific musicians over the last thirty years, is remixed by none other than Henrik Schwarz, German deep house king and electronic deviant. The track in question is "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuro", which is transformed by Schwarz into a lively house number complete with Taylor's vocals and plenty of electronic tweaking and processing. The end result is just a straight-up summer jacker. Check!

Spanish Butterfly - (3:32) 101 BPM
Supimos Callarnos - (3:48) 90 BPM
Review: Chalk up two 'Katakaka Edits' outings on the bounce for El Paso, as hot on the heels of the soul-flavoured '115', released just a fortnight ago, he brings us four re-edits that look to vintage Latin music, and particularly 60s boogaloo, for inspiration. Leading the charge for this reviewer is 'Spanish Butterfly', which pairs the lead male vocal with melodic female BVs to die for. Elsewhere, pianos and trumpets take centre stage on 'Nuevo Boogaloo' and sparkling vibes/marimba (?) augment the sunny 'Brother & Sisters', before 'Supimos Callarnos' plays us out in far more laidback, lounge-y, almost melancholic style.

Palago (SekoBass remix) - (2:45) 111 BPM
Review: Pedro Guinu's first album for Razor N Tape, 'Palago', was a wholehearted tribute to Brazilian music of the 1970s and '80s that we'd argue is one of the slept-on sets of 2021. This follow-up EP brings the Brazilian's trademark sound bang up to date via a wealth of quietly impressive remixes. Jose Marquez kicks things off with a fine revision of the title track that sits somewhere between classic Azymuth, nu-disco and samba, before Faze Action deliver a groove-driven, Clav-happy Balearic disco rework of 'Haje Fe'. Elsewhere, Diogo Strausz steals the show with a percussion and synth-laden revision of 'Electromandinga' hat straddles jazz-funk and synth-boogie, Carrot Green dances his way through a squelchy house-not-house revision of 'Portao De Ferro', and SekoBass opts for a hot-stepping, sun-soaked sound on a fine re-wire of 'Palago'.

Review: This officially licensed 12" sees prolific British disco producer Ben Gomori take a scalpel to two cuts from veteran African musician Amadou Balake's 2015 album, In Conclusion. On side A you'll find a fantastic, eight-minute extension of the breezy shuffler "Bar Konon Mousso (Musicien C'est Pas Quelqu'un)", where snaking saxophone solos and sun-kissed, juju style guitars rise above a hot-stepping, bass-heavy groove. Turn to the flipside for a thrillingly epic take on "Massa Kamba", a deeper and slightly more musically intricate cut blessed with a blissful; Pat Metheny style jazz guitar breakdown, memorable chorus vocals and evocative horn lines.

Review: Galletas Calientes simply won't stop handing us the goods, piling up the compilations on a weekly basis, and opening our ears to whole batches of new artists out there. This particular episode is the second remix instalment of the Palenque Records AfroColombia series, showcasing the very best of South American Afrobeat. Plenty of killer dance vibes and carnival moves throughout, from the likes of DJ Panko, Umoja, and the rest of the contemporary dance scene blurring the lines between African heritage and Hispanic tones. Wonderfully seductive material for those looking to add a bit of warmth to their January blues.

Review: Two new remixes here of this Afro-flavoured production by Dave Lee in his Doug Wilis guise, which first came out back in 2007, and which was also remixed by Audiowhores the following year. The man picked to do the honours for 2022 is Emmaculate, AKA Chicago's Eric Welton, who doesn't flip the script too much, retaining the hi-life-ish feel of the Original but now augmenting the Rhodes that took the lead first time around with some scorching sax work. An Instrumental is also supplied, so if you'd rather dispense with the chanted male vox, you can.

Scruff brings to his edition an exclusive collaboration with CyberPunkJazz ("3001: A Space Disco Remix") and an unreleased track from Andy Ash to boot. Review: On this fine EP from the Sterns Edits camp, Ben Gomori and SMBD (AKA Gilles Peterson favourite Simbad) take it in turns to rework cuts from 1980s Nigerian star Segun Adewale. On the A-side, Gomori gets to work on "Atewo-Lara Ka Tepa Mo'se", wrapping Adewale's original vocals and glistening juju guitar solos over a rolling, Ron Trent style Afro-deep house groove. It's super-sweet and wonderfully summery, suggesting we'll be hearing it in more than a few DJ sets over the next few months. Simbad, meanwhile, serves up two versions of "Ojo Je": a hustling, polyrhythmic disco excursion (the "SMBD '85 Raw Disco Mix") and a far deeper and more trippy excursion rich in warm sub-bass, reverb and delay-laden vocal snippets and ricocheting synthesizer motifs (the superior "Rascal Dub").

Review: Throughout the course of their Digger's Workout series, Swiss combo Alma Negra has proved adept at blurring the boundaries between re-edits, remixes, and original productions. The same could be said about the sun-kissed global fusion of "Burkina Berlin", where wild vocal chants and dense percussion samples are craftily combined with heady piano motifs and a rock solid deep house beat. Rainer Truby and Corrado Bucci provide a deeper, hazier and subtly soulful interpretation that plays down the sampled beats in favour of far more tactile hits, before the Basel-based trio closes proceedings with "Algadez", a rare Persian treat built around exotic fiddle lines, humid flutes and their usual chunky percussion.

Review: There's a time for accessible podium belters, and there's a time for deeper jams that aren't afraid to take a left turn now and again. This five-tracker is one to reach for when you're firmly into the latter zone, as Multi Culti serve up a collection of eyes-down, late-night cuts that mine various global musics for inspiration: Sheila Chandra has been a stalwart of the British Asian music scene for 40 years, Sababa 5's 'Nasnusa' is a take on a classic Mizrahi song, while the title of 'Amakondera' references a style of Rwandan music that uses horn- and gourd-based wind instruments. An EP that will delight those whose tastes lean towards the exotic and the less familiar.

Review: Parisian producer GUTS has covered a lot of musical ground over the past decade, from hip-hop to Afro-disco and space jazz, but most recently he's been working with a coterie of top-flight world music players and producers including Cyril Atef and Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. Together they've been touring extensively as a quintet, but they've also found time to record this album, which they describe as "flitting between Brazil, Africa and the Caribbean". The likes of Gilles Peterson or Mr Scruff will no doubt be in raptures, but even if you're not normally a great lover of world music there are still some gems to discover - see fast 'n' furious slap bass workout 'Matadou' for starters.
