Review: Having previously joined forces with Running Back to launch his own label, Sister Midnight, it's no surprise to find Roman Flugel pitching up on Gerd Janson's popular imprint with a brand-new imprint. The Anima EP is a teaser for the veteran producer's forthcoming album, Eating Darkness, though all of the tracks are exclusive to this release. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'D.I.S.C.O', a jaunty, life-affirming fusion of throbbing, sequenced synth bass, sparkling lead lines and progressive trance motifs that comes accompanied by a deeper and more trippy-sounding Dub mix. Elsewhere, 'Anima' is a wonky and minimalistic chunk of off-kilter micro-house, while 'Eating Darkness' is a fine slab of revivalist '90s IDM complete with dark and mind-bending modular sounds.

Review: This five-track single provides a taster for s/t, the debut album from Traxx, Beau Wanzer and Steve Summers aka Mutant Beat Dance. Produced in the trio's signature grainy style, it features the baby samples and moody, repetitive bass-led "Toy Story" as well as a possible cross over track in the shape of the jittery punk-funk and scratchy guitars of "Feed The Enemy", a collaboration with Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem. Despite this fleeting flirtation with fame, this release also shows that Mutant Beat Dance haven't forgotten their past: "Funk Groove" is a swampy piece of electro-funk and "Revival 80s" mines a path through the basement moods and dusty drum machines of 80s proto-house.

Review: This year saw Berlin clubbing institution Watergate turn 20 years old. To celebrate the milestone, they took the experience outside the club for a full weekend rave, plus the release of this mammoth 20 track compilation of new and unreleased tracks. Highlights come from legendary artists such as the ever reliable Henrik Schwarz who appears with the highly engineered soul of "You Need Attitude", veteran of the scene Sasha gets a seriously heads-down groove happening on "Wolf Cider", Hamburg maximal heroes Extrawelt deliver as expected on the hypnotising "Rover" and former Mobilee co-head Anja Schneider gets the hands in the air on the uplifting house of "Can't You See Me No More?' plus many others.

Review: Theus Mago's Duro label decides to look back on the last-half decade with glee in this Hard Five Retrospective bringing together a huge compilation to help remind us what life's gonna be like when we're allowed back on the dancefloor! Not just bells and whistles, Duro keeps its flavours deep with cuts from Rigopolar in the Jean Michel Jarre/coldwave vibes of "Espiral" matched by the heavy beats and juicy basslines of Max Jones's "Poche". Earlier on you'll find some rare Tyu jams - our pick being the Espacio remix to "Stephen Hawking" - next to a selection of choice Bufi cuts (we recommended the Mio remix), with Mago going deep himself in the groove-centric "Luna". Other dope jams include Bruha's 808-driven "Ladra", Sascha Funke's remix to Motel77 and Rina & Benji killer workout "Koshmaro".

Review: Tronik Youth's Nein label bring us the debut EP (we think!) from the mysterious Slum 159, a producer with seemingly no online presence at all. In this case he really can afford to "let the music do the talking", though, because if you're a fan of darker disco styles influenced by EBM and electro you'll find much to enjoy here. 'Decade' itself is a fairly unremarkable throbber with a woodwind-like synth sound taking the lead - From Beyond's beefier remix works better, to these ears. But 'Plastic', with its air of 80s sleaze and menace, is really quite distinctive sounding, and Los Fugazzi's moody, prog-tinged refix is a killer.

Review: Music From Memory's last epic compilation, 2017's Outro Tempo, did a terrific job in uncovering the dusty, rarely visited corners of Brazilian electronic music. Uneven Paths offers a similar service to those interested in the eccentric, often inspired fringes of European pop music. Of course, compilers Jamie Tiller and Raphael Top-Secret are not interested in run-of-the-mill or commercial synth-pop, but rather "deviant pop" - melodious, left-of-centre curiosities that some may describe as "Balearic". This is pop music from the outer limits, where tracks variously draw influence from spoken word, global rhythms, post-punk fusion, jazz, new age ambient and kosmiche. It goes without saying that the crate-digging duo's selections are spot on throughout, with genuine surprises around every corner.

Review: Damon Jee and Snem K havce moved from party-ready house and techno to far-out swarms of Neo-romantic cold wave...and that's absolutely fine by us! The duo team up for this new EP on Rotten City Flies, kicking of with the nostalgic yet progressive dance aesthetics of "Dear Humans" - sounding a list like Ian Curtis in his golden days - before dropping into the steelier sounds of "Do Carry On", another 80s-leaning dance number. There's two remixes on the flip: Demian's more house-centric version of the title track, whereas legend Mugwump transforms "Do Carry On" into a cinematic big beat roller that'll do more than fine at most festivals. BAD!

Review: With releases on Balihu, Permanent Vacation, Rare Wiri, Eskimo and Nang, disco producer from the Canary Islands Ilya Santana is back on his beloved Astrolead Recordings with a scorching four set of disco heaters. Whether it's the dark and brooding Giallo energy of "Lost in Philadelphia" (Ilya Santana re-work) or the low slung classic funk attack of "Cryptonite" (Ilya Santana edit) he proves there's much within his sonic repertoire. Elsewhere, he takes you on a neon-lit night drive down the coast on the breezy "Geronimo" (extra instrumentation edit).

Review: One More City follows Red Axe's self-titled long player from 2020. In terms of direction, it sees the duo move away from electronic music to focus on a more guitar-based approach. Of course, they haven't completely departed from their roots, and "Beast", featuring ECHO on vocals is a wonderfully sleazy electroclash-style jam. Elsewhere though, guitars prevail. "Bring It On", with Cole Alexander's vocal tones, is awash with surf-style solos, and "Goodbye Mary" resounds to a frazzled punk guitar that wouldn't sound out of place on late period Jesus & Mary Chain. Best of all though is the post-punk strut of "Kid Caffeine", replete with Clams' nasal drawl.

Review: Madrid based label Logical present Los Fugazzi next, who are Guadalajara based duo Bernardo Barrera and Messier 83 that serve up some wicked nu-disco grooves like on "Kinetic" with its sleazy cosmic vibe and vintage synth flair reminiscent of Todd Terje. It gets a wicked remix by Rigopolar shortly after; which takes it even further into the stratosphere in more lo-slung fashion. Second original track "Pyromaniac" carries on with some soaring and razor sharp arpeggios with some synth funk-bass that's redolent of Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It too receives a brilliant remix by Aussie duo Somerville & Wilson who accentuate the throwback vibes furthermore, even adding some nice 303 acid squelch into the mix for dramatic effect.
