Review: Released by Belgian label La Musique Fait La Force, this extensive compilation designed to complement Jozef Deville's documentary The Sound Of Belgium includes nascent and trailblazing productions from the likes of Klaus Schulze, Front 242, Neon Judgement, Lords of Acid and CJ Bolland, while other notable classics include Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash", Outlander's "The Vamp" and Emmanuel Top's "Acid Phase". In total, it features 60 tracks of new beat, industrial and rave music from '80s Belgium, rendering it a defining compilation for the curious and interested to the more hardcore EBM enthusiast.

Review: One More City follows Red Axe's self-titled long player from 2020. In terms of direction, it sees the duo move away from electronic music to focus on a more guitar-based approach. Of course, they haven't completely departed from their roots, and "Beast", featuring ECHO on vocals is a wonderfully sleazy electroclash-style jam. Elsewhere though, guitars prevail. "Bring It On", with Cole Alexander's vocal tones, is awash with surf-style solos, and "Goodbye Mary" resounds to a frazzled punk guitar that wouldn't sound out of place on late period Jesus & Mary Chain. Best of all though is the post-punk strut of "Kid Caffeine", replete with Clams' nasal drawl.

Review: It's certainly no bold statement to come out and say that Illum Sphere is easily one of the hottest properties in UK dance music. Real name Ryan Hunn, the multi-talented producer has appeared on all the big 'uns; from Monkeytown to Tectonic and even 3024, he's always been firmly on point delivering the goods on a consistent basis. This is his return to London's Ninja Tune, and it's through both "Second Sight" and "Ritual" that we see the man moving onto something newer, less formulaic, and highly resonant with the wide-eyed and diverse expectations of any bass produce in this day and age. This come highly recommended and it's pick of the week from us!

Review: Early 80s Germany was a fertile breeding ground for all manner of unexpected musical fusions, and here Toy Tonics bosses Mathias 'Munk' Modica and Kapote present their re-edits of seven ultra-obscure new wave and post-punk gems from the country's underground scene in the years 1979-1983. Imagine the motorik rhythms of Can, Kraftwerk or Neu! colliding head-on with the punk-funk peddled by the likes of ESG, Liquid Liquid or early A Certain Ratio and you've got a rough idea of what to expect - though even that won't prepare you for the Adam Ant-like yodelling on Carmen's 'Schlaraffenland' (a Krautwork-esque rework of the Archies' Sugar Sugar', we kid you not).

Review: Having previously joined forces with Running Back to launch his own label, Sister Midnight, it's no surprise to find Roman Flugel pitching up on Gerd Janson's popular imprint with a brand-new imprint. The Anima EP is a teaser for the veteran producer's forthcoming album, Eating Darkness, though all of the tracks are exclusive to this release. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'D.I.S.C.O', a jaunty, life-affirming fusion of throbbing, sequenced synth bass, sparkling lead lines and progressive trance motifs that comes accompanied by a deeper and more trippy-sounding Dub mix. Elsewhere, 'Anima' is a wonky and minimalistic chunk of off-kilter micro-house, while 'Eating Darkness' is a fine slab of revivalist '90s IDM complete with dark and mind-bending modular sounds.

Review: Italo nouveau specialist David Jackson, perhaps best known for 2020's 'Airport Disco', joins forces with like-minded ex-pat Northern Irishman Cormac, a veteran of the mid-00s Trash/Nag Nag Nag/Wet Yourself electroclash heyday who's busy these days with his Queerly Beloved podcast, his Polari label and his regular Rinse show. Together, they come to Running Back with a track that's pure 80s in feel and that owes a clear debt of inspiration to Depeche Mode. Label boss Gerd Janson's remix wonks things out a little more towards the end, while if you're not feeling the vocal there's also an instrumental included.

Review: A decade after delivering his first EP for Bomb Strikes, Tom Booze returns to the party-starting imprint with an ear-catching collection of original productions. Title track 'Simulation' - which is also available in a vocal free instrumental mix form - is a sparkling chunk of mid-tempo synthesiser-driven nu-disco/synth-pop fusion that comes complete with audible nods to Daft Punk and the auto-tune antics of 21st century electronic pop. Booze pays tribute to the squelchy synth-bass and funk-fuelled guitar locks of Parliament/Funkadelic on bonus cut 'The T-Funk', a flash-fried slab of authentic P-funk revivalism.
