Review: What a monsterous collection of creations we have here as we explore the full range of breakbeat influences, from slower, more clunky original creations, to garage inspired rollers and everything in-between. The sheer mass of this collection is one of it's immediate charms as we are gifted over 50 originals and remixes, each one bringing something unique to the table from a supporting cast including the likes of Origin8a & Propa, Benton, MKII, Deekline, Samurai Breaks and more. The constant changes of direction and expansionary sense of sonic inclusion are both big yesses from us, with our favourites including 9Trane's nostalgic bubbler 'Thuggish', next to the housey piano drives of Herve's 'Live Together' and the old school garage flavour of Matt Jam Lamont, Echelon & Tuff Culture, who join focus for 'Massive & Crew'. Tidy work indeed!
Review: Fresh from inventing a micro-genre of his own on the Frank Musik-released 'Guinness Trance', Irish producer David Jackson pitches up on Dennis Sulta's popular Sulta Selects Secret Service label with two more floor-burning workouts. He starts with '2020 Eurotrance Track', a throbbing and surging fusion of tough-as-teak drums, vintage trance motifs, seductive sequenced bass, occasional snare rolls and euphoric, mood enhancing breakdowns. He flips the script completely on 'I Wanna Dance With Daisy', peppering a fearlessly tough and punchy electro beat with glassy-eyed female vocal samples, jazzy bass, 8-bit bleeps, grinning keyboard stabs and acid-style electronics.
Review: Johannes Kolter is Kolter, an artist formerly known as DJOKO, and now a hotly tipped breaks and garage head who has already got plenty of attention. Here though he makes a grand and widescreen statement with the first full length release on the Pilot label. It is a stylish and adventurous album with plenty of killer cuts from the downbeat hip hop opener to the deep house delights of 'Journey' via the elastic and energetic future house kicks of 'Roboflow.' Showcasing both a knack for well craft synths and expert drum programming precisions, this record plays out like a mini DJ set with all the twists and turns you need to keep you on your toes and fully engaged.
