INTERVIEW WITH COMPA

We see that you have a couple sample packs due for release in the coming weeks, can you tell us what the inspiration was behind putting these together?

Absolutely. The intention behind the sample packs is simply to provide inspiration and help musicians make more music and have fun in the process. Over the years, I've consumed sample packs by many of my favourite artists and the enjoyment I take from getting my hands on their sounds always has me writing music all day every day for weeks on end. I wanted to [and hoped that I'd be able to] provide that same inspiration to anyone who enjoys my music.

Do you have a preferred DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) you prefer to use at the moment and what would be the 3 essential plugins you'd advise newcomers to instantly download?

Logic X. It's the platform I've used for a few years now and I know it and love it. My three favourite plug-in's have to be U-He's 'Protoverb' [Sick reverb], Tritik's 'Krush' [Sick bitcrusher] and the absolute bad boy Native Instruments 'Absynth' [Sick synth].

What do you find is your most common 'starting point' for a track? Do you build from the drums upwards or seek out a sample and work around that?

Almost always a sample. I rarely start a track without one, and it can be anything. Sometimes I'll be on YouTube watching a video for example, could be anything, and I'll just hear a sound and it'll set my producer-mind racing and I'll be straight into building a new track. Splice is a great platform for finding samples that trigger inspiration too. If you haven't used it I certainly suggest it.

With your music being so Sound System orientated, do you have a 'final test' you give you music before pressing it to vinyl? Car test? Local sound system?

The first thing I'll do is a car test. Ah, the trusty car test. And then I'll send it to a couple of close producer friends, usually Mala and the Deep Medi label manager Steph, and then Hatcha or Alix Perez or another close producer friend who's feedback I really trust and respect. If their feedback is good and even better they begin playing the track, I know I'm onto a winner.

Finally, do you have any tips for producers experiencing writing block?

I do, the answer is always sample packs. Ideally, both of my Producer Packs ; - )
