Hear That (Trends & Boylan Remix)
Hear That (Trends & Boylan remix) - (4:16) 140 BPM
Review: Now if you were looking for an allstar 140 lineup, It's hard to look at this new single and not see it as one of the strongest drops of the year. Trends & Boylan are a dangerous duo at the best of times, but when you then combine the majesty and power of their unique approaches to production with the likes of Cimm, Youngsta and the untouchable vocals of Riko Dan, you are always going to end up with something special. The track takes the title 'Hear That', which Trends & Boylan tear to pieces, reformatting it into a rave-ready smash, layering Riko's catchy vocal line over the top of a cascade of lethal horn lines, powerful bass pushes and eerie piano melodies. This is one for the dances, make no mistake about that!

Tripta - "Shadowboxing" - (3:46) 140 BPM
YYZ - "Jiga" - (3:03) 140 BPM
Review: Next up from Strictly140, we see a very wavy selection of dubstep & grime inspired rollers, showcasing some seriously hard-hitting sounds. First up, Slimmaz delivers a skippy 2-step inspired instrumental, fusing catchy vocal samples and blipping melodies for a spicy result, followed by a solid collaboration between himself and Tripta entitled 'Vacuum', focusing this time on high octane kick rolls and bulbous 808's. Tripta then steps out solo for a classic grizzly grime instrumental by the name of 'Shadowboxing'. This one combines Davinche-esc brass and string stabs with fluttering drums for a vibrant showdown, followed by a tidy outro from YYZ, fusing Asian instrumental plucks with rolling trap-like drums on 'Jiga'. Awesome stuff!

Review: Next up from the Jafa Sound collective, a tasty deep-dive into future dub and the sounds most on-the-ball pioneers, getting to work on a box of official steppers remixes. We explore a variety of sounds, from Graysound X Wreckage's stripped back whomper rework of Can't Tolerate' from Jahdan Blakkamore, through to the junglist refreshment of DJ Koncept & RSD joining forces on their 'Black Heart'; overhaul from Publik Report. The release is jam-packed with joys and genre breaking bullets, with our favourites including the singalong sweeps and catchy vocal work of Dub Terminator's overhaul of Rubi Du's 'Diamonds & Gold', next to the sub-busting bass sweeps of Digital Danboi's 'Can't Tolerate' overhaul. Awesome work from top to bottom!

Terror/Industrial
Terror - (4:42) 106 BPM
Industrial - (6:15) 141 BPM Hot
Review: J:Kenzo and Mosaix's Artikal Music can be credited as having had an influential part to play in the bass years that have followed the 'post-dubstep' sound. However, this crew has always done things their own way, and they've always employed the services of artists who like to measure their success by being single-minded in their approach to the wider bass music amalgam. Markee Ledge steps into the limelight alongside FWD legend Youngsta - who should probably be seen as one of the original iterators of dubstep. "Terror" is not a revolutionary dubstep tune but it does what it does in the most effective way possible; a slow, lingering swarm of mutant bass spreads across sparse percussion shots and grey-scaled atmospherics. "Industrial", on the other hand, ups the tempo and the energy thanks to a deafening injection of sub bass and classic steppahs beats. The sort of gear you'd expect to hear at a DMZ rave...

Review: What an absolute treat we have here as the don-duo of Nomine & Youngsta join forces for an exceptional new album project entitled 'Ascension', exploring the best of dub-inspired digital sound design across twelve stunning originals. From the slow dubby bops of the intro 'Courage', through to the system-inspired 2-step drum bounces of 'Journey' and industrial percussive slumps of 'Essence', this album takes us in so many different directions, giving us a real insight into the production landscape within which these two masterminds operate. We also see some wicked vocal additions from Lelijveld, Breezy Lee & Animia, who all add their own unique textural twists to the table on display, with our overall album favourites including 'Hidden' alongside Lelijveld, next to the grimey minimalism of 'Hypnotic' and trippy electronic drum designs of 'Guidance'. Stunning work!

Review: Since their inception, the Terroryhthm releases we have had the pleasure of seeing land in the store have always inspired an uplifting, ethereal energy, a theme that Yedgar gladly continues with this four track expanse. Kicking off with 'Mythic' alongside Sorsari, we are greeted by a wash of beautiful pad structures and sweeping subs below, closely followed by the more grimey melodies and choppy drum work of 'The Time Has Come' and the ascending arpeggios of 'So Lost'. The vibes continue with their incredibly harmonic approach with the chiming leads and crunchy percussive reverberations of 'Life Cycle' before finishing up with 'Set You Free', a big room, wave-emulating floor filler, stuffed full of good energy.

Review: For their fifth grime project, the 1Forty team really have gone all out, inviting some of the most popular names in the 140 scene to take part in this monstrous selection of bangers. We begin with Hamdi's 'Raw', a behemoth of a riddim, dripping with vibrant LFO energies and skippy drum structures, closely followed by the lethal steppers link up from 9TRANE and Logan entitled 'Evil Side'. We move back into instrumental madness next as ManGo delivers an old school squarewave explosion entitled 'XO', before YGG leap onto an incredibly energetic piece of production from 'JHuttz' on 'Royals' to round this one off in style.

Hollow Earth - (6:31) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Dutch sub-magician Yikes makes his debut on Phantom Hertz with this neat two-track affair. Both numbers are cut from a similar dub cloth... Deep, alien textures, spiked slo-mo acid lasers and canyon-like grooves. "Pathway" is the more brooding of the two as an inward, paranoid bass groove loops with a sad smile. "Hollow Earth" is a tad more uplifting thanks to some deft piano touches.

The Dreamer - (6:31) 140 BPM
Review: Having made his debut on Phantom Hertz late last year, Sir Yikes returns to the label with a tight trio of sub sessions. "Prognosis" is a bubbling bass cauldron, taking a low-end approach that's more often spotted on D&B. With cool pitch twists on the fills, there's some real positivity to be found amidst the sludgy bass darkness. "Dimensions" is a much more classical cavernous dubstep affair with a prominent halfstep and trad-dub stabs. "The Dreamer" closes the show with finesse; what begins as a deep, 'heads-down' tribal affair mutates beautifully into a delicate example of dub euphoria. Very clever.

Review: Uncompromising bass tactics abound as Houston's YYA hops over the pond to Croydon's Dubtribu imprint. "The Running Man" carries several techno hallmarks as the sub pulsates with gradually growing menace. Further on we're immersed in classical drama as "Stressless" stretches out the strings before dropping into a series of sharp sinewy bass waves while "Sacrifice" takes us down a dark bass alley and duffs us up with distorted gritty lows and industrial strength highs. For his grand finale YYA lays down "Deepspace". All drones and gravity defying drum dynamics, naturally it lives up to its name.

Review: Yin Yang Audio has already graced the presence of Croydon's Dubtribu, but this time the producer does so with an 11-track album, deserved chance for him to really get his voice across. This is because YYA's output isn't dubstep in the fullest sense of the word, but rather a diverse and explorative myriad of sonics bound together by a heavy layer of low frequencies. If you're expecting loud, squelching and raucous brostep, you won't find any here; Yin Yang Audio serves up a gnarly bunch of tunes that can be used both on and off the floor, a myriad of sonics to bounce to and meditate over. For fans of the Deep Medi sound.

Review: As ever, the consistency and A&R skillsets of the Albion Collective team ring very true in this one as we are greeted by Yoofee, who delivers three system ready chompers. We begin with the vibrant rhythmic displays and colourful drum skips of 'Seek & Move', a throwback, marching goliath. Next, 'Janker' arrives with a much more demonic vibe, combining gnarly sub punches with eerie, high ended melodic flutters to really unleash those devilish tones. Finally, 'Make You Believe' gives us one hell of a finale, combining delicate ascending arpeggiators with shuffling drums and molten subs below. A wicked selection to say the least!

Review: What a link up we have here, as the very much in-form sounds Yoofee are joined by the definition of consistency in 140-based music: White Peach Records. This is another display to knock your block off as 'Wings' arrives firstly with a spectacular display of fluttering woodwind and organic claps, followed by a system-busting masterclass in 'Wahhh', which deploys a lethal array of jittering sub-bass maneuvers, landing with instant impact. Next, the lively arpeggio action and shuffling drum beats of 'Fermata' takes the EP on a more stripped back path, before the eerie synth sweeps and bulging subs below 'Czeck Mystik' deliver one last guttural punch to send the dancefloor into a ruckus. Awesome stuff from Yoofee and another heavy-hitter for the White Peach catalogue.

First up, 'Calibration' gives us a solid display of atmospheric pressure and rolling drum technique, before the shuffling drum skips and organic percussive stutters of 'Freak' give us a completely different look into Yoofee's production range. Following this, the quirky melodic jilts and creeping harmonic textures of 'Ok Cold' send us down a much more low-ended route with a heads down warbler, before Orlando gets involved on a killer finale entitled 'Negative Released', delivering a gut-punch of dungeon-ready bassy goodness to round off the project with a slap.

Zuma - (4:42) 140 BPM
Medusa - (4:21) 140 BPM Hot
Review: As always with the incredibly consistent Locus Sound crew, we are once again given the pleasure of enjoying another sumptuous three track experience, this time being unleashed by the one and only Yoofee, we kick start this one with the glittering percussive inflections and grizzly sub-lines of 'Pendulum', which sets the tone perfectly with some blistering bass action, before 'Zuma' gives the bass-bins a real workout with a systematic warbler, pushed forward by metallic drums and stripped back atmospherics. Finally, 'Medusa' puts the cherry on the cake with a sizzling display of percussive perfection and low-end processing, rounding off this project with a heated finale.
