Mecanica - II
III33 - (8:04) 83 BPM Hot
Review: The esteemed ESP Institute label overseen by digger extraordinaire Lovefingers seems to be right in the midst of a purple patch right now having just dropped excellent long players from Young Marco and the Blase duo of Secret Circuit and Suzanne Kraft. Ahead of exciting returns for Tambien and Tornado Wallace, ESP offer another sublime slice of electronic funk for the open minds out there from Nenad Markovic's 33 10 3402 project. This is the second installment of Markovic's Mecanica series and it's a sound we've personally some to associate with Beppe Loda's infamous mix tapes from the mid-80s cosmic scene in Northern Italy. Both tracks are heavily reminiscent of that era, where brash African drums meet intricate electronic manipulations and funky basslines. A beautiful crossing of post-punk, cold wave and funk. Sublime!

The Sandpiper (Psychemagik/Cantoma Remixes)
The Sandpiper (Psychemagik remix) - (5:23) 86 BPM
Review: 40 Thieves long awaited debut album, The Sky Is Yours, was something of an epic; 10 years in the making, it stretched out across two CDs and four slabs of vinyl. Here, two tracks from the album get the remix treatment, with crate diggers-turned-party animals Psychemagik and Phil Mison's Cantoma outfit at the controls. Psychemagik's version of "The Sandpiper" is particularly good, delivering a heady, Arabic-influenced slice of chugging, eyes-wide-shut Balearica that benefits greatly from a rubbery groove and woozy chords. Mison takes a different approach on his rework of "The Sky Is Yours", laying down a version that sounds like T-Coy making late '80s Italian house. It is, all told, the epitome of Balearic house.

One Night In The Borough (Part 1)
If The Feeling's Right? (original mix) - (6:16) 88 BPM
Review: One Night In The Borough, the debut full-length from Scottish disco/house fusionists Craig Smith and Graeme "The Revenge" Clark, is arguably the best thing either producer has done yet (and certainly collectively). This first sampler 12" showcases four of the album's many highlights, offering plenty of loopy, floor-friendly grooves for those who like their house with more than a dash of original disco flava. Choose between the slo-mo MDMA soul of "If The Feeling's Wrong" (our pick), the urgent stomp of "Find A Way", the smart retro house vibes of "Changin" and "Iznae", a delightfully stripped-back chunk of late night deep house bliss.

Shake It Up/Cosmic Jam
Shake It Up (feat Alicia Blue Eyez Smith - extended 12 version) - (7:32) 88 BPM
Review: Throughout the latter half of the noughties, musical fusionists 7 Samurai made regular appearances on G.A.M.M and Poets Club Recordings, delivering reworks and original tracks that somehow joined the dots between jazz-dance, dub, deep house, soul, hip-hop and Latin beats. Here the duo returns on France's Favorite Recordings with their first new material for well over four years. Flipside "Cosmic Jam", dedicated to Patrick Forge, is arguably the pick of the two tracks, with rich Rhodes riffs and Herbie Hancock style space synths riding a dubby, rolling deep house groove. That said, Alicia Blue Eyez Smith hook-up "Shake It Up" - a loose, twinkling chunk of cosmic disco inspired dub-soul fusion - is pretty darn tasty, too.

As I Wait 4 Your Love - (3:38) 89 BPM
Stereo In The Window - (4:48) 82 BPM
Review: Brooklyn-based five-piece 79.5, headed up by singer, songwriter and bandleader Kate Mattison, released their debut long-player 'Predictions' on Big Crown Records in 2018 and now, five years on, they follow it up with their self-titled sophomore outing on Razor-N-Tape. '79.5' opens with the sax-sporting late-night dancefloor groover 'Club Level', but after that the tempo seldom goes much beyond walking pace, making this an album that's probably best suited to post-club listening, with one slow jam after another bringing hints of R&B, smooth jazz and bittersweet Adult Oriented Pop, and with an 80s-sounding sax line never far away. It'll be too polite for some - the sweary 'B.D.F.Q' notwithstanding - but you just KNOW babies will be made to this...

Xuclar - (5:31) 85 BPM
Review: Whether it's Firas Waez's solo work or collaborations with Matrefakt, his music is a blend of modern tools with an appreciation for the ancient magic and positivity of the genre. Appearing as his studio character 9th House here on the Midas EP, he's teamed up with Running Back to create a set of upbeat and heartfelt house tracks. Featuring uplifting chords, joyous melodies and lively drums, the music has an infectious feel that's hard to resist. One standout is the title track, which features sharp peak-time magic that stimulates endorphins and brings a flush to the cheeks. Overall, the five tracks provide a welcome escape and serve as talisman against trying times.

Surf Blue - (4:10) 89 BPM
Review: Mysterious Russian producer A Vision Of Panorama returns with a brilliant full length release fooling up great efforts on Music For Dreams and Aficionado. Expect lo-slung, retro flavoured nu-disco with a brazen display of Balearic flair. Starting out with "Back To Elba", a groove which is cool as a cucumber, there's more mellow dancefloor stuff such as on "Barbados" or "I Saw The Wind" which call to mind Max Essa, Fabrizio Mammarella or even Lauer at times. Combined with sombre yet romantic pop ballads such as the haunting "Duality" featuring some gorgeous vocals or "Surf Blue" calling to mind Gaussian Curve: this is a truly wonderful album.

Two Birds
Tongue Of The Ocean - (4:11) 85 BPM
Played by: Chris Coco
Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves".

Review: Italian trance and slow acid on this new and typically wacky Multi Culti release from modular brothers A-Tweed & Oltrefuturo. Hot off releases for Whypeopledance, Sinchi Collective, Duro and Nein, the crazy pair present a mini LP of maximum strength. Get on your tunnel vision for the slo-mo chugger "Android Riot", go further down the vortex on the psychedelic locomotion of "Ushuaia Bottellon" before being taken to a higher state on the euphoric indie-dance of "Jaipuri Kundan Ring". Elsewhere, we never mind a good hit of acid do we? The 303 centred throb job "King Hippo" has you covered.

African Sheikh EP
Dazzled - (4:48) 89 BPM
Played by: Superbreak, Don Dayglow
Review: Passport To Paradise has pulled off something of a coup here, snagging a rare re-edit EP from Redlight Records' digger Abel Nagengast. Predictably, it's rather good, and full to bursting with sneaky reworks of obscure gems. Title track "African Sheikh" - a kind of wonky Italo-disco/proto Afro-house hybrid - is particularly potent, though the quirky electrofunk/synth-pop shuffle of "Impossible" is almost as good. Then you'll find the dreamy, Balearic disco slinkiness of "Confusion", and the even more horizontal vibes of "Dazzled", where glistening guitars and hazy vocals intertwine with delay-laden beats and sustained synthesizer notes. As re-edit EPs go, it's one of the more special ones.

Review: Greg Vickers aka Afternoons In Stereo is a master at the art of electronica and all things downtempo. Over the years, the majority of his output has come out through the Timewarp label, to which he returns to at present with Retrospective, a collection of his own favourite productions from the last ten years. In there, you'll find his inimitable take on IDM and electro, most vividly represented by classics such as "El Puma", "Metrosexual", or the utterly memorable "Tinto Brass", a favourite around these parts.

Dansu EP (Japan Edition)
Futsu (ZOMBIE-CHANG remix) - (4:55) 85 BPM
Review: First released back in 2021, Belgian-Japanese artist Ailli's debut EP - a collaboration with another hotly-tipped Belgian producer, Transistorcake - returns in expanded form. Fittingly, this new edition adds a wealth of unheard remixes from Japanese artists. There's plenty to set the pulse racing among the five original tracks on show, including the low-slung, dubbed-out psych-disco chug of 'Dansu', the sparkling Italo-disco revivalism of acid-fired throb-job 'Oki', and the immersive, dawn-ready dreaminess of 'Genki'. Remix wise,Shinichi Osawa's TB-303 powered acid house take on 'Dansu' is superb, Narkiaki's Maurice Fulton-esque tweak of 'Pari Pari' is a treat, and the Stones Taro revision of solo Aili tune 'Toki-Doki' is an impossible-to-pigeonhole, groove-driven delight. In a word: essential!
