Review: With 17 tracks on offer there's no room here to list the source material for every track on this latest re-edits selection from the ever-busy Alkalino, even if we could identify them all - which we can't, because it's fair to say he's dug really deep here to find some gems. No guilty 80s pop pleasures here, just obscure disco, Italo and boogie nuggets expertly repolished to suit modern dancefloors, the arguable exception to that rule being an excellent take on the Detroit Emeralds' 1972 soul/funk classic "Baby Let You Take Me (In My Arms)", here reinvented as "Let Me Kiss You". Other highlights include the lazy, sensual "Feel The Music" and the dreamy jazz-fusion of "Ghetto Blues".

Review: After releases on Phonica and Freerange, Chilean producer Massiande puts another uber-hip label notch on his production bedpost with a three-track, four-mix EP for Midnight Riot. The title track so convincingly works late 70s/early 80s tropes that only a distinctly 21st Century heft to the bottom end gives away its much more recent origins, while Moodena supplies a housier remix that tuffens up the beats while bringing the guitar to the fore. Elsewhere, 'The City' is all jazz piano licks and 3am deep house beats, while 'United We Funk' operates in more straight-up disco-house territory.

Review: There's naturally plenty of high-grade material to be found on Jolly Jams' latest round up of previously "promo only" material from their regular vinyl missives. It's a thrill-a-minute ride through illicit underground dancefloor pastures that touches on a variety of styles, from the "Buffalo Gals"-sampling early Chicago House flex of Promo Only's "Promo Only" (track 9) and the pitched-down jazz-funk/disco-funk re-edit brilliance of Conor's "Sure Thing", to the Ron Hardy style grooves and dub delays of new wave/proto-house rework "Sake of Nothing" by Slaves of Love, via DJ Kaos's sought-after dancefloor tweak of an infamous Italo disco-era cover of Eric Clapton's "After Midnight" (here re-titled "Midnight Patrol"). The latter, now near impossible to find on vinyl, is simply essential.

Review: Chewy Rubs' 'Ruff Beats' series reaches its fourth instalment in a little over 12 months, with deep, tracky grooves the order of the day once more. 'Keep On Doing It' is a mid-paced affair that tops moody synth sweeps with an echoing male vocal urging us to "keep on doing it like that", 'My Definition' is a more driving, house-ified cut that gets free 'n' easy with a Dream Warriors vocal snip, 'Sensations Of The Mind' marries snatches of two well-known vocals to a heavyweight funk bassline and hard-slammin' 4/4s, while 'Swagger' again plunders classic hip-hop from New York, New York (that's a clue!) for vocal inspiration.

Review: 2020 Vision chief Ralph Lawson is a big fan of ASHRR, a Los Angeles band whose signature sound adds a big dose of Californian sunshine to influences including dub disco, space rock, post-punk and alternative soul. He's already released remixes of one track by scientist and Felix Dickinson, and here shares interpretations of 'Talking In Your Sleep' by dub disco and nu-disco scene stalwart Fernando Pulichino. He's delivered a trio of takes on the band's throbbing, hazy, sun-splashed original - a punk-funk-meets-dub disco '7-Inch Mix', the hybrid deep house/dub disco hypnotism of the 'Disco Dub Mix' (itself reminiscent of his early outings on the 2020 aligned Redux imprint) and the spacey, dub house-informed 'Deep Mix'.

Review: You'd expect a collaboration between Columbia-based fusionist Bosq, Ibibio Sound System's horn section and vocalist Kaleta to be pretty darn good, and 'Song For Ehi' most certainly is. Inspired by a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco, it starts with the original version delivering a near perfect mix of timbales-sporting dub disco grooves, reverb-laden lead vocals, Afro-funk guitar licks, Afrobeat-esque organ licks and punchy horns. The track's inherent dubbiness is further explored on the revision, which adds extra layers of percussion and the kind of breathless dancefloor weight that marks out the greatest dub disco workouts. In a word: essential!

Review: The clue's in the name here, as UK deep house and disco stalwart Pete Le Freq teams up with the unmistakeable tonsils of Freakpower's Ashley Slater on a track that first appeared on a Bombstrikes comp a year or two back but now gets a single release on Pete's own Alpaca Edits label. 'Five Six Seven Eight' comes in Properly Extended and Radio Edit mixes, with Slater on top growling, sleazoid form and Le Freq providing a suitably funk-fuelled backdrop. Definitely something of a Wild Cherry-ish feel here, but since when was that a bad thing? Play that funky music, white boys!

His entrance is a laid back one with the lazy Sunday vibes of "You Left Me", while "Six Machine" is amplified funk with trumpeting horns, walking basslines and sassy vocals. "Not Easy" ventures down a soul route leaving the flutey "Harlem River Drive" to seal the deal of a great four-track release.

Review: Brazil's Hugo Doche returns to East London-based label The Disco Express with three fresh slices of contemporary disco/disco-house. 'Hit The Tracks' features a very pop-oriented vocal from Sansy but also sports some excellent sax work, the Kria McKenzie-sporting 'This Feeling' has something of the lounge-y vibe of late 70s Brazilian disco but also comes accompanied by a significantly more house-ified remix from Birdee that for this reviewer is the standout track on the EP, while finally 'Dance' features Carla Sceno on mic duties and rocks crisp 4/4s and a fat funk bassline.

Review: Long-serving disco-house fusionist Hot Toddy (AKA Crazy P co-founder Chris Todd) is in a loved-up mood on this rather tasty three-tracker. Surprisingly, it's his first solo single for some five years, and his first for House of Disco. It's the breezy, funk-fuelled A-side "In The Genes", in which Todd expertly fuses together elements most often found in proto-house, NYC boogie, early house and disco-funk records, that stands out, though the standard naturally remains high elsewhere. "Love Music", for example, is a wonderfully sauced-eyed stroll through dreamy deep house/disco fusion, while closer "Love Can Set You Free" sits somewhere between stripped-back disco-house, percussive boogie and Idjut Boys style dub disco.

Review: Aroop Roy is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist originally from the UK and now residing in Tokyo. Be prepared for one well funky and soul infused journey on "Talkin Bout Life" which is perfect to bring in the summer of 2017. Funky elements, a serious horns section and strong vocals hold up this brilliant track. It's a more straight ahead deep house affair on the rather evocative "We Together" and actually its the kind of track you could imagine Derrick May or Dixon playing out; there are definitely elements of 'hi-tech soul' in it. The Brisa remix of Talkin Bout Life" on the flip is a worthy addition also.

Review: Golden Gate are a new musical project from DJ/producer Tee Cooper and songwriter/vocalist Harper Lake, who hail from Leeds. As Golden Gate they set out to create classic-style house and disco alongside a rotating cast of guest musicians and singers, notably London soul vocalist Adeleye Omotayo, who duets with Lake on summery soulful houser 'Shine Like The Sun'. The Reflex flexes his jazz-funk muscles on an outstanding remix that brings the track's live elements to the fore, while the accompanying 'So High' is another smooth, soulful jam before getting a jazzier makeover courtesy of Bustin' Loose. Southport Weekender's coming up - expect this to be on heavy rotation.

Review: Now aged 82 and still recording, Ebo Taylor is a true giant of the Ghanaian music scene whose career goes all the way back to the 1950s. Along the way he's worked with Fela Kuti and been widely sampled by hip-hop producers, and here Mr Bongo bring us four new mixes of three cuts from his 'Yen Ara' album, which was released earlier this year. Ron Trent's take on 'Krumandey' and Nick The Record's rub of 'Mumudey Mumudey' will go down well on house floors, while the Nature Flako remix of the latter and the Black Fan mix of 'Mind Your Own Business' are more geared towards specialist Afro jocks.

Review: File Under Disco's "100% original disco music" remit is refreshing in these days of countless re-edits and sample-heavy nu-disco mash-ups. Their latest salvo comes from London's Oh Yeah, whose trademark sound effortlessly blends live drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals. "Nothing But The Beat" is a strong debut, sitting somewhere between sharp, Chic-style disco, hazy jazz-funk and early '90s acid jazz. The remix package is notably strong, too, with Crazy P man Hot Toddy delivering a pair of reworks. On both he toughens things up a little and adds a few dub disco flourishes, whilst retaining the band's wonderful instrumentation. His Dub, in particular, is superb.

Review: Sgt Slick enters 2024 with an extended and revamped version of "Stars On 45 Theme" with a remix from London producer CASSIMM - aka Alessio Caforio. The original composition, dating back to 1981, was a medley mix that successfully topped global charts, including the coveted number one spot in the US with its undeniable 'ooh ooh' vocal and disco appeal. Cassimm elevates the original with some big build ups, huge drops, mega basslines, looped vocals, and some extra staccato for that mainstream house feeling!

Review: If it's box-fresh but still authentically vintage-sounding funk vibes you're after, you'll find them in abundance on this V/A four-tracker from UK label Cuttin' It Fine. Roast Beatz are up first with the James Brown-ish 'Jungle Steppin', before Gramophone Soul marry War/ Sly Stone-esque vocal chants with rap snips on the big beat-infused 'Day By Day'. Pecoe's 'Good To Me' then brings more phat-assed retro vibes, complete with some familiar-sounding vocal bites, before Frankee More plays us out with the rumbustious 'For The Music', which rocks another chanted funk vocal. Overall, file somewhere between big beat, funk breaks and straight-up funk.
