Review: Long-serving producer Disco Tech has released more edits and reworks over the years than we've had hot dinners. Remarkably, he still continues to deliver on-point revisions - as this second volume in his ongoing 'Reworks' EP series proves. There's much to admire across the six tracks on show, from the atmospheric, slow-burn excellence of AOR disco revision 'Stars In The Ghetto' and the dub-funk wonder that is the James Brown-sampling 'Boss', to the peak-time '80s disco sing-along 'Take Time' and the on-point Clash dub disco revision 'Magnificent'. We also recommend 'Be With You', a deliciously groovy, dubbed-out take on a Doc Severinsen track that has long been a DJ Harvey favourite.

Review: Glitterbox knows how to throw a party, and "Glitterbox Archives Vol 4" proves it once again. This EP collects four previously unreleased, dancefloor-tested gems, each offering a unique flavour of the label's signature sound. Kicking off with a bang is The Shapeshifters' "Try My Love (On For Size) (The Rub Dub)". This extended version of the already infectious disco anthem dives deeper into its groove, layering dubby effects and pulsating basslines that will have you moving right away. Next up, Michael Gray and Kelli Sae's "You're Gonna Make Me Dub Somebody Else" takes things down a notch. The "dub" moniker lives up to its name, stripping away some of the original's funk elements and emphasizing the hypnotic rhythm section. Kelli Sae's sultry vocals remain captivating, while the dub treatment creates a more introspective and atmospheric aura. Art Of Tones & Inaya Day's "Give My Love (Piano Dub)" is a revelation. This stripped-down version showcases the song's beautiful piano melody and Inaya Day's powerful vocals in a whole new light. Rounding out the EP is Qwestlife's "Hit It Off (Babert Remix)". Review: Oliver Dollar, a Berlin-based artist who first appeared on Rekids as a remixer in 2012, has returned to Radio Slave's label with his 'Strings for Life' EP. The EP's title track begins with rich and stirring strings that add soul to the track. The song is warm, euphoric, and built on a rocksteady disco groove, making it both familiar and classic. 'School Daze' is a loopy track with funky bass, jazzy chords, and timeless house drums topped off with a retro vocal sample. The EP's final track, 'Sophisticated Funk,' features an epic, emotive beatdown, and Dollar doubles down on the disco. Oliver Dollar brings a very different sound to Rekids with this EP, which is full of joyous and lush tunes.

Review: Throughout their decade-long career, Alma Negra has combined their love of disco and deep house with percussion, instrumentation and ideas excavated from African, Caribbean and tropical musical cultures. On this EP, they largely ditch the latter inspirations, instead delivering full-throttle revivalist disco sounds where the Basel-based band's organic instrumentation and vocals combine with colourful synth sounds and heady horns. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'Madrugada', a warming and thickset, subtly deep house-influenced take on the turn-of-the-80s NYC downtown disco-not-disco sound. It comes backed with two revisions - an extra-percussive, dubbed-out Yuksek tweak and the band's own dub disco-goes-deep house 'Dub Mix' - and the riotous, party-starting brilliance of 'Funky Fever'.

Review: Dombrance has spent the last few years making music inspired by imaginary French politicians of the 1960s, '70s and '80s. To round of the project, he's pitched up on Discolypso to share the final two tracks - and a wealth of remixes. 'Bayou' is a certified throb-job in which alien-sounding synths and heady vocalisations rise above a pulsating, Italo-disco groove, while 'Cope' is a darker, techno-tempo workout rich in analogue electronics and driving grooves. There are too many remixes to mention them all, but our picks include Lindstrom's breezy, electrofunk-influenced Norse disco take on 'Bayou', Baldelli and Dionigi's hybrid dub disco/Afro-cosmic take on the same track and Francois K's suspenseful, stretched-out, slow-build revision of 'Cope'. Throw in a deliciously druggy, Italo-disco-goes-rave revision of the same cut by Diskjokke, and you have a genhinely brilliant package.

Review: In an industry where the term 'veteran' is bandied about far too freely, Colin Curtis is the real deal! His DJing career goes all the way back to legendary Northern Soul club The Golden Torch in the late 60s. In the 70s, he was a resident at Blackpool Mecca alongside Ian Levine, where he became one of the first DJs to introduce the more modern sound of jazz-funk to the scene. By the mid-80s he'd become an early UK champion of house, too, but these days it's on the jazz-dance scene that he's most revered - and here he serves up a 26-track connoisseur's collection that shows why. Ranging from straight-up jazz and soul to soulful house and leaning heavily towards the Afro- and Latin-flavoured, some of these cuts are recent offerings, some date back as far as the 70s, but on jazz-dance floors, all will go down a treat.

Review: An international meeting of the minds here as Japan-based British veteran Max Essa joins forces with Eddie C, who hails from Ontario in Canada but now calls Berlin home. Together they've come up with four classy jams that blur the lines between Balearica, nu-disco and deep house, with 'Melon Steppin' centred on a fragile keys riff but busting out some fine 303 squelch in the middle, 'Save Me' a more mellow and soulful affair with hints of jazz-funk, 'We Live In the Hills' all ponderous drums, haunting chords and more squelchy synths, and 'Sixth Bridge' a more midtempo, vaguely lounge-y closer.

Review: Given the prolific output of his Rare Wiri label, it's a wonder Rayko finds time to get in the studio at all. But he does, regularly - and when he's not producing synthy, 80s-flavoured nu-disco jams of his own, he somehow also manages to fit in the odd cheeky re-edit or 20! Here, then, a score of such reworks are served up for your listening and dancing pleasure, with the emphasis firmly on lesser-known gems - sources include Ann Peebles, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Break Machine, Michael Sembello and Earl Flint, as well as US folk-rocker Barbara Keith's version of 'All Along The Watchtower', but there are plenty more that will have to go unidentified. Suffice to say, though, that if funk, disco, boogie, electro and pop from the 70s and 80s float your boat, this collection will leave you positively buoyant!

Review: A dash of Trans-Atlantic collaboration here, as Miami-based Mexican (and Tour de Infinite founder) Rigopolar joins forces with Discoteca Seduction founder Disto Disco for the first time. Lead cut 'Untitled' joins the dots between driving, punk-funk-influenced dub disco, dark disco and trance-infused nu-disco, while 'Spaced Out' is a harder-edged and more rave-igniting slab of arpeggio-driven electronic disco that comes complete with robotic vocals. The latter is impressively remixed by Phunkadelica, whose revision is a strobe-lit peak-time treat, while 'Untitled' is reworked twice. First Colossio & Cabizbajo recall the halcyon days of "new rave" on a growling guitar-flecked revision, before Childs delivers a deliciously chugging, shoegaze-influenced wall-of-sound take that may be the EP's most inspired moment.

Review: Veteran DJ and producer Nic Fanciulli lands at Hot Creations with his first original material for the label, the aptly titled "You Sure Do" EP. This two-tracker wastes no time showcasing Fanciulli's ability to craft dancefloor bombs that pay homage to the past while sounding fresh and current. The opening track, "YSD," is a full-on disco-infused house anthem. Fanciulli lays down a foundation of massive basslines and a pounding drum groove, creating an atmosphere guaranteed to get bodies moving. The track isn't just a nostalgic throwback, though. Fanciulli's crisp production and innovative sound design ensure "YSD" feels just as relevant on today's dancefloors. Following up, "We R Bass" takes things in a slightly different direction. Here, pulsating kick drums and sharp snares drive the energy, while warped vocal samples and twisting synths add a layer of intrigue. With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: St Petersburg's own disco don Sunner Soul returns with three more predictably high-calibre slices of contemporary disco. The EP opens with the sumptuous, lounge-y and aptly titled 'Late Night Vibes' with its dreamy female vocal, chorus'd "oohs" and lavish strings. 'Right Place' then joins the dots between deep house, filter disco and 80s boogie in a most pleasing fashion, before finally we come to the slightly housier 'Something Good' with its rich, warm bassline and sampled chunks of interview dialogue with the mighty Tupac. What the EP doesn't have, you might argue, is any obvious peaktime calls to the dancefloor, but that's a good thing... this is for the headz!

Review: Some unabashedly old skool disco fun and frolics on this five-tracker from Italy's Ministry Of Funk, and his publicity-shy oppo Disco Incorporated. A lively re-edit of MJ's 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' kicks the EP off in party-hearty style; after that, 'Golden Melody' brings very familiar sweeping, soaring strings, 'Back Into Time' will please New Yorkers whether they were born there or are just on an odyssey (hint hint!) while 'High Steppin' and 'Soul Woman' revisit dancefloor staples from Love Unlimited, with the latter throwing in a well-known snatch of Peech Boys vocal for good measure.

Review: It may be an 'odds and ends' release, featuring as it does a mixture of originals, remixes and edits, but DJ Kaos's latest offering is packed to the rafters with high-grade gear. Kaos first offers up his disco sample-heavy edit of Dangerous Dan and Nicky Night Time's 'Mystery' before we're treated to Solomun's hypnotic-but-loose-limbed early morning revision of Kaos's 'I Want To Be There'. His tweak of Daniel Wang and Erland Oye hook-up 'Lessons' is a hybrid deep house meets drowsy nu-disc affair, while 'Only Dead Men Are Free' is a fine fusion of Patrick Cowley style Hi-NRG grooves and elements of country classic 'Jolene'. To round things off, we get two top remixes: the Glimmers' throbbing, wide-eyed sprint through 'Spiral Jetty', and extended Dr Dunks disco-meets-acid house revision of 'Horny Morning Loop'.

Review: Leeds' own disco don Andy Buchan returns to Hot Gorilla with an EP consisting of what are, essentially, three nu disco-fied cover versions - specifically, his takes on 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' by Simple Minds, 'Get Lucky' by Daft Punk and 'Burning Down The House' by Talking Heads. But there's a twist - as the EP title suggests, each of those covers has been augmented by the employment of a full choir on vocal duties. It's an approach that may prove a bit 'Marmite' (for this writer, the treatment works best on 'Get Lucky') but it certainly makes a change from endless re-edits...

Review: If funk and jazz are your thing, don't sleep on this latest missive from Italy's Lego Edit stable, which packs six reworks of vintage cuts both highly familiar and somewhat less so, We start out with the instantly recognisable groove of Kool & The Gang's 'Jungle Boogie', now reinvented as 'Jazz-Ungle', while elsewhere you'll find fresh takes on the Dave Brubeck Quartet's jazz classic 'Take Five' (1959) and Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson's 'It's Your World' (1976). The sources for the other three will have to go sadly unindentified (though those piano licks on 'Jazzy Touch' are annoyingly familiar) but rest assured, this is classy stuff all round.

Review: If you thought the first 'Crazy P Curates' compilations was a wild ride, hold on tight because this one is a rollercoaster through the sonic cosmos. 20/20 Vision Recordings continues to deliver musical treasures, and this fourth volume is a testament to the Notts scene stalwarts' commitment to championing tunes that make you move and groove. Kicking off this sonic escapade is the Scandi-disco maestro Ray Mang, weaving his magic with lush cosmic melodies and nu-disco beats that are so loose-limbed, they could moonwalk on their own. Funk alert: this is not your average trip through the cosmos; it's a funkadelic joyride through the galaxy. Next up, Tigerbalm takes us on a detour to a tropical oasis with "Cosmic Union" featuring the enchanting vocals of Joy Tyson. Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bring the heat. Ruf Dug joins the sonic expedition with "Vape Quarter Rhythm," a mind-bending blend of proto-house and dreamy Italo bliss-out. Review: Greek producer Goji Berry made his Katakana debut on the multi-artist 'Vol 50' EP back in 2017. Since then he's appeared on two further V/A EPs in the series as well as helming six of his own, most recently Vols 142 and 140. Now he's back with 'Vol 144', which finds him reworking a brace of classic soul/funk jams, namely Wilson Pickett's 'Funky Broadway' from 1967 and Lonnie Liston Smith's 'A Chance For Peace', taken from 1975's 'Visions Of A New World' album. Given the calibre of the source material, it's hard to go wrong, really - and Goji Berry certainly doesn't.

Review: Bondax's "Journey" on Future Disco isn't just an album title, it's an experience. This LP marks a decade in the game for the UK dance duo, and "Journey" reflects that beautifully. Review: Best known for his releases on the Katakana label, DJ Laurel comes to Fingerman's Hot Digits with three new re-edits in a funk and soul vein. The title track reworks Wilson Pickett's cover of Eddie Kendricks' 'Don't Underestimate The Power Of Love', and is served up in two mixes: the soulfully chugging original and a beefed-up, nu-discofied remix from the label boss himself. Review: Although Alkalino has re-edited all sorts of music over the years, disco, boogie and Italo-disco tracks have always been his bread and butter. He's taken a different path on his latest release, offering up 'Transgenre Edits' that touch on a wide variety of sounds and styles. There's much to admire throughout, from the 105 BPM conscious soul-goes-dancing headiness of 'Songs That I See' and the weirdo disco-rock-goes-Italo-disco throb of 'Angry Eyes' (a take on a legendary 1979 by Skatt Bros) to the effervescent jazziness of 'Sad Sax' (an edit of the track sampled by Mr Scruff on 'Get a Move On'), the muscular, mind-mangling synth-disco throb of 'Angel Dust' and the bouncy Tango-disco rush of 'Funana'.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Alexander Chebankov AKA Sunner Soul, namely warm, woozy, tactile and picturesque cuts that combine his own production chops with elements borrowed from disco, boogie, soul and Balearic jams. 'Da Funk', his first missive of 2024, boasts four tried and tested cuts. First up is the title track, a filter-heavy slab of filter heavy disco-house which boasts nods to some of Basement Jaxx's earliest material. This is followed by the Tiger & Woods-esque boogie-house of 'Need You', a tidy (and subtly dubby) South American jazz-funk-meets-disco number ('Brazilian Rhythms') and a gorgeously dreamy slab of ambient excellence ('Deep Space').

Review: Pete Le Freq returns to Alpaca Edits with four more reworks of vintage cuts. Getting the ball rolling is 'Groove On', which takes on Willie 'Beaver' Hale's 1980 cut of the same name, and it's fair to say a bit more time and effort has gone into this re-edit than most, not least because the tempo's been upped noticeably. 'Satisfied', which revisits a Dynasty jam that was first released on Solar in 1979, is another edit that transforms the original significantly while 'Singers On the Stand' draws on The Joubert Singers' classic 'Stand On The Lord' from 1985. That leaves only the source of 'Sweeter' unidentified, but it's a pleasant little disco/boogie workout regardless.

Review: Faze Action's Robin Lee has made many fine solo records under the Andromeda Orchestra alias, more often than not colourful and classic-sounding re-inventions of original disco and boogie with a subtle nu-disco twist. That's what's on offer on 'Swing On', an excellent instrumental excursion that marks the long-serving musician/producer's second single of 2024. In typical fashion, the track is suitably big, with spiralling synthesizer lines, Chic style guitar licks and rousing piano motifs rising above a rubbery bassline and sweat-soaked peak-time disco percussion. Lee then doffs a cap to the Idjut Boys and other dub disco scene stalwarts on a stripped-back-but-effects laden dancefloor dub that's equally as impressive as the full version.

Review: Contemporary disco with the funk and soul in full effect is the order of the day on this V/A offering from Ravanelli Disco Club. Vigi's opening 'Loving You' comes from the more discofied end of the deep house and garage spectrum and should be a small-hours cert, after which comes Kousto's 'Save My Soul', which marries rolling tribal drums to a looped soulful male vocal, and as such should work on soul and soulful house floors alike. It's then time to get up, stand up as Sauco's aptly-titled 'Twisted Funk' takes us into struttier territory, before finally Donny Rotten brings the 70s-inspired nu-disco vibes with 'Her Way'.

Review: 2024 marks a decade since the launch of Alpaca Edits, an offshoot of the Llama Farm label established by Pete Le Freq and Fisco Dunk in the mid noughties. It's fitting, then, that the imprint's first missive of their 10th anniversary year comes from Le Freq. It's a joyous and celebratory affair all told, particularly opener 'All My Laxative', a cheery, string-laden and horn-toting rearrangement of a dewy-eyed disco-soul treat. Of course, there's plenty to set the pulse racing across the rest of the EP. Check first 'Mi Sabrina', a rolling house style re-edit of a jazz-funk-tinged Latin dancefloor gem, before turning your attention to the low-slung, delay-laden disco bump of 'Mysteries of Cissy', and the warming, loved-up disco warmth of 'The Sweetest Way'.

Review: Now into his 21st year releasing music, Peter Major AKA Opolopo has amassed an incredible catalogue of music, much of which brilliantly blurs the boundaries between disco, deep house, jazz-funk and broken beat. Having spent the last couple of years remixing and re-editing other people's work, Major is now ready to offer up some fresh original productions. He begins in typical impressive fashion via the bouncy, disco-goes-house brilliance of 'Bebeccie's Theme' - all billowing orchestration, cascading pianos, jammed-out jazz-funk synth solos and rolling grooves - before Fouk provide a deliciously jaunty, boogie-tinged disco-house rub of 'Stroke My Disco'. The honeyed vocals of Darian feature prominently on the superbly soulful jazz-house jam that is 'Looking For You', while 'Chocolate Spiders' is a Clavinet-sporting fusion on early '80s jazz-funk and expansive peak-time house.

Review: Following on from the release of her debut album last year and its 'Remixes' counterpart in May, Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm now returns with two fresh tracks that once again showcase female vocalists from around the world. 'Nina' finds her collaborating with transnational duo Farafi, while the accompanying 'Sisters' is graced by pan-African supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique. Both tracks are rooted firmly in traditional African music, with 'Nina' a percussive, chanted affair while 'Sisters' has a more lilting, singsong kinda vibe, but 'Nina' also gets a brace of more house-oriented remixes courtesy of Tel Aviv's Elado (a Razor-N-Tape regular) and Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project.

Review: Given that Divine Who is a gospel-disco rework project helmed by Greg Belson (one of the world's most renowned gospel diggers) and Midnight Riot chief Yam Who, you'd expect this second volume in their ongoing 'Altared Disco' series to be packed to the rafters with killer revisions of dusty and obscure gems. It is, of course, with the pair hitting the mark straight away with 'Dance' - a thickset disco-house affair in which soaring gospel lead and backing vocals rise above chunky beats, infectious piano riffs and swirling sonics. 'Never Turn Back (Jaegerossa Remix)' is another peak-time ready house-style revision of a piano-powered, hands-aloft gospel-disco treat, while 'Feel' puts a new spin on a slap-bass sporting chunk of early '80s gospel-electrofunk.

Review: Melbourne, Australia-based DJ/producer Ken Walker - the possessor of perhaps THE best artist moniker in the game - follows up last summer's debut full-length 'Discopolis' with a second volume that's every bit as essential. Rocking an overall vibe somewhere between contemporary (rather than 'nu') disco and disco-house, the album opens with 'What In The World', which nods to The Police's 'When The World Is Running Down', and closes with 'Saxophonica', which marries the risque spoken vocal from Jimmy Z feat Dr Dre's 'Funky Flute' (which also appears on 'Blow It') to the sax line from Men At Work's 80s hit 'Who Can It Be Now?'. It's fair to say our Ken isn't averse to dropping the odd familiar sample, then: in fact, the 15 cuts here blur the lines between sampling and re-editing. But trust us, the dancefloor's going to be far too busy dancing to worry about that.

Review: UK deep house and disco stalwart Chewy Rubs is back with four brand new cuts whose overall MO is summed up rather nicely by the EP title. 'Chunky But Funky' itself centres around a hefty, squelching bassline that's married to a solid 4/4 kick, tizzy hats and a single, nagging piano chord, with spacier synths joining the party in the second half. Elsewhere, 'Dance To It' is a rollicking disco roller with a male "dance to it" vocal joined by chorus'd female "dance!" shouts, 'Disco Evo' ploughs a rawer funk furrow, while 'Feed Your Soul' brings the strutty deep house vibes. Good stuff all round.

Review: The first four volumes in the Hot'n'Spicy series came from label head HOLDTight, AKA Fabrice Pinori, a Paris-based producer and re-editor specialising in "psychedelic and Balearic disco," but on this V/A outing he shares the helm with some fellow hardcore vinyl botherers. Whether these are original productions or re-edits is hard to say but Eddie C's 'Big City Freak' is a low-slung disco/funk workout, Paul Older's '7 Days & 7 Nights' is a more uptempo disco romp, HOLDTight's own 'Afrodisiaa' is an Afro-infused funk jam with squelch by the bucketload and finally Bill Brewster's 'Love Easy' drops down into hazy, druggy ALFOS-ish territory.

Review: Germany's DJ Friction once more dons his Frico re-editor's hat and serves up another brace of reworks of classic tracks from days of yore - more specifically, in this instance, days of early 80s boogie yore. First to get the treatment is 'Never Let You Go', a 1982 cut by UK outfit Savanna. Frico's remake is very faithful to the original, but most importantly he leaves the fine scatting section towards the end intact... doo doo dah-dah! Frico then turns his attention to 'Sparkle', another 1982 jam, this time by veteran Japanese singer-songwriter and producer Tatsuro Yamashita. Boogie lovers will be in raptures.

Review: 62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: Although he's been operative since the start of the noughties, Unclepasha only has a handful of solo EPs to his name - most notably on London label Nang. Here the Russian producer pops up on Vintage Music, an imprint founded by his fellow countryman Sunner Soul back in 2010. What's on offer are, we think, kind of edits-not-edits - tracks that make extensive use of elements of forgotten old cuts, but with added beats and instrumentation. Title track 'Tol'ko Ya' blurs the boundaries between seductive, low-slung dub-disco, swamp funk and nu-disco, while 'Dubby' lives up to its name by properly dubbing out and beefing up a percussion-rich jam of unknown origin. To round things off, TSDC reworks 'Tol'ko Ya', giving it a filter-heavy, dub-flecked disco-house feel.

Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.
