Joey Negro / Various
Style X - "No Secret Affair" - (5:33) 137 BPM
Review: Joey Negro focuses entirely on the Brit Funk movement of the 1970s and 80s on his latest mix compilation. The twenty-three tracks provide an extensive history on the genre and contain a number of extremely rare and very sought after crate digging collectables. Avoiding the huge hits of the scene which appear on retrospectives the world over, Negro unleashes a host of the genre's underground club hits that remained only on the local scene, many of which were re-edited by Negro exclusively for this compilation. Do not miss this.

T-2017 - (4:40) 135 BPM
Review: Not to be confused with the French indie/rock band of the same name, Black Bones are a DJ crew from Belfast who are known for their genre-agnostic Glimmers/Alkan-esque club sets. No surprise, then, that this four-track EP for Duca Bianco is a similarly wide-ranging affair. At least two of the four cuts are essentially re-edits, with 'B.E.E.F' biting Heaven 17's '(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang', while 'Keep Dancin' reworks Chris Isaak's 'Dancin' from 1985. The genesis of the other two is less clear, but the angular, strutty 'T-2017' appears to have beamed in straight from mid-80s Berlin while 'Coming On Strong' takes us into pounding Italo/EBM territory.

Review: Step into the world of COMPASSA aka Tom Trago and Charles Levine, collectively known as The Compass Joint. They unveil their new musical identity rooted in shared influences and a commitment to compassion, mindfulness, life, and music. Proudly presenting The Compass Choice EP, the duo offers a sonic foundation that showcases the breadth of their collaborative project. This release delves into a love for FM synthesis, weaving together an eclectic mix of electro, Caribbean rhythms, techno, and futuristic flavours for the dance floor. Our pick, the bonus beats of "Galactic Clearance" - hot hot hot!

I Wan' My Bab' Back - (3:43) 138 BPM
Review: Livingstone Studio reissue a Nigerian disco album that first saw the light of day way back in 1983. The album opens in fine style with the raw funk-fuelled disco workout 'Get It Down', and while not every track is a killer there's enough here to warrant investigation by those who like to push the envelope in their DJ sets, with 'Holiday Action' rocking chicken scratch guitars, sing-song vox and squawking sax, and the latter half of the album evidencing a more obviously "Afro" sound (on 'Delectation' in particular), while special mention should be made of 'Friday Night', a gloriously 70s-sounding slab that conjures images of finger-clickin', Afro-sportin' dudes in matching velveteen suits.

Kidparis - "Detroit 1988" - (6:34) 136 BPM
Review: With 30 tracks to choose from, you certainly can't fault this latest collection of re-edits from Manolo Brigante's Vienna-based WE MEAN DISCO!! stable on the value for money front. You might, admittedly, question whether a collection that packs reworkings of Chic's 'Good Times', Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On', James Brown's 'Sex Machine' and Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer', among others, can really set sail under the 'deep disco' flag and keep a straight face. But never mind that, because there are some very playable remakes on offer here for sure, ranging from the lightly beefed-up to the truly transformational - as well as plenty of less obvious sources to keep the 'spotters happy.

Messan - "Keep Cool" - (6:06) 135 BPM
Played by: Tomasz Guiddo
Review: During its late '70s and early '80s heyday, France's disco-boogie scene tended towards the eccentric. Yet despite the camp, tongue-in-cheek feel adopted by many French bands and producers, much of the music was of an impressively high standard. That much is clear from Charles Maurice's second French Disco Boogie Sounds compilation. Packed full of slick, synthesizer-driven material and punchy, horn-heavy disco-funk thrillers (see the Teena Marie style "Movin" by Jackie Esam), it's a fine collection of Gallic dancefloor treats. You're unlikely to find a better example of jazz-funk positivity than Black Bells Group's "Talk Me Mam's", while Messan's "Keep Cool" is a lesson in thrusting, up-tempo disco sweatiness.

Rob Can't Stop - (5:57) 135 BPM
Review: Authentic 1970s disco survivor Robert Ouimet set pulses racing last September with a quality collection of club-ready re-edits on Basic Fingers. Here the Canadian veteran offers up a three-track sequel that's every bit as essential. First up is "Come Party", a strings and sax-laden chunk of soaring peak-time disco that rises and falls majestically over eight action-packed minutes. He ups the tempo on the energetic and suspense-filled Blaxploitation disco workout "Where's Eugene", while "Rob Can't Stop" is a deliciously heavy, sweaty and full-throttle affair built around deep synths, frenetic percussion chops, excitable slap-bass and just the right amount of celebratory vocal snippets.

Muse About - "Psartek Philippe" - (6:16) 135 BPM
Review: Having existed for some time as a DJ booking and management agency, Chevry has decided to launch its own label. Fittingly, release one is a compilation that acts as a kind of showcase for the artists on its roster. There's much to admire across the 13 tracks, with highlights including - but in no way limited to - the sun-kissed acid house-meets-nu-disco bounce of Fasme's 'Acid Party', the deep and dusty, disco-tinged loop-house of Jeff The Fool's 'What You Need', the breakbeat-driven piano house rush of 'Stock Option' by Deborah Aime La Bagarre, the sub-heavy, low-slung deep house strut of DJ Steaw's 'Sunlight' and the late '90s, Dave Angel style techno-funk of 'Feel Your Soul' by Baccus. Psartek Phillipe's closing cut 'Muse About', a Shazz-esque chunk of acid-driven French techno, is also impressive.

Healing (interlude) - (1:14) 136 BPM
Review: Tensnake's fourth studio album finds the German veteran in a distinctly pop mood. Opener 'It's Easy' rocks the kind of languid, sun-soaked house/disco vibe for which we know him best, but 'Bodytalk', which follows with its R&B-ish male vocal, is a better indicator for the album as a whole, which operates mostly in the hinterland where house, R&B, disco and pop collide. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course: it'll certainly give 'Stimulate' commercial appeal, and there's no denying the Janet-esque charm of Jessy Lanza collab (and recent single) 'Keep It Secret'. For this writer's money, though, the album's best tracks are the closing trio of 'Brain Food', 'Fiesta Magica' and 'How Will I Know', which have their eyes fixed more firmly on the dancefloor than on the radio.

Biri Biri (Samual Miles remix) - (4:47) 138 BPM
Review: Three years after Jungle Fire joined Razor N Tape Reserve, the label has decided to offer up a swathe of new remixes of some of the band's classic cuts. It's a simple idea, executed brilliantly. Man of the moment Felipe Gordon excels on a jazz-funk and nu-disco-tinged deep house re-frame of 'Atomico', before label co-founder J Kriv delivers a thrillingly squelchy, driving disco dub of 'Le Krossa'. Legendary turntablist DJ Nu-Mark offers a superbly funky rework of 'Atomica' that embraces the track's Afrobeat roots, band-member Patrick Bailey joins the dots between electro and Afro-funk on his deliciously spacey 'Snake in Da Box Dub', and Samuel Miles opts to layer up breathless, energetic percussion on his fine remix of 'Biri Biri'.

Ocean Rhythms - (7:30) 135 BPM
Review: DJ Kaos doesn't put out many re-edits these days, but when he does, they're invariably superb. This seven-track set of fresh reworks contains some of his finest scalpel work to date. The headline attraction is undoubtedly "Midnight Patrol", a brilliant rearrangement of the Valverde Brothers' 1978 disco cover of JJ Cale's "After Midnight" that makes much of the winding synth solos and gospel backing vocals. There's plenty of other killer material throughout, though, from the synth-laden cosmic disco throb of "Stranger", and 135 BPM tropical drum workout "Ocean Rhythms", to the '70s rock surge of "Psychedelic Supermarket" (a tasty re-cut of The Who favourite "Eminence Front"). All killer, no filler.

Come On Kerrier - (5:16) 135 BPM
Review: After releasing Luke Vibert's acid-heavy Ridmik set, Hypercolour boss Jamie Russell asked the Cornishman if he had any disco-flavoured Kerrier District material knocking about. He answered in the affirmative, and 4, Vibert's first full-length under the alias for a decade, was born. Although the project was initially inspired by Black Devil Disco Club's warped electronic disco (and, presumably, the smoother grooves of Metro Area), a decade on Vibert's approach is noticeably different. While the fluid synths, undulating disco basslines and cheery grooves remain in place, the intoxicating depth of the original has been replaced by a cheekiness more readily associated with Vibert's Wagon Christ pseudonym. It is, then, a different beast than previous Kerrier District outings, but no less entertaining.
