Ain't Nothing But A Groove

What I Feel - (6:52) 94 BPM
Discover Me - (8:01) 95 BPM
Review: Having found success blending chopped-up disco and soul cuts with head-nodding house rhythms, Luca Trevisi is in no rush the flip the script. Then again, why should he be? As this second collection of shuffling disco/soul/house blends proves, nobody else does head-nodding slo-mo and midtempo groovery quite as well. Ain't Nothing But A Groove offers few surprises, but a whole heap of excellent, floor-friendly productions (some, such as the brilliant "Get Down", which have previously been released as singles). While the balance between disco, funk, soul and house changes throughout - the jazzy "Vuonto Beat", for example, is almost a straight-up murky deep house cut - Trevisi's wonderful way with grooves constantly impresses.

Remind Me (The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984)

Remind Me (LP version) - (5:15) 91 BPM
Review: Most active from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, Patrice Rushen's discography has spanned jazz, R&B, jazz-funk, soul and pop, but it's the jazz-funk/disco fusions she delivered for Elektra Recordings in the late 70s/early 80s that remain her best-loved work. Here, 15 tracks from that period are gathered together, with favourites like the evergreen 'Forget Me Nots' and 'Haven't You Heard' (reworked in the late 90s by Daddy's Favourite) snuggling up alongside less over-played but equally high-quality cuts like the jazz-funk piano groove that is 'Number One' and the ultra-smooth boogie of 'Feels So Real'. Smoochers like 'Where There Is Love' perhaps sound a little less relevant in 2019, but this is still a very classy collection indeed.

Gold (Flying Mojito Bros Refrito) - (5:16) 97 BPM
Review: The story goes that !K7 regular James Alexander Bright and his manager were blown away by a Flying Mojito Bros set at Glastonbury and, as a result, handed the American duo six of his tracks with a view to infusing them with some of their magic disco dust. Before that, though, the album opens with a brand new track created collaboratively: 'Let's Get Lost', which sounds a bit like Hot Chip wandering around the New Mexican desert fired up on Mezcal and party smarties. Elsewhere, with Bright's indie-soul vocals sitting atop backings that are one part west coast country rock to one part disco, the album's overall effect isn't dissimilar to the Phenomenal Handclap Band, but perhaps a little less 70s-rooted and with more contemporary pop appeal.

Review: Slightly Transformed bring us the latest installment in their occasional compilation series, which follows on from 'Summer Numbers 2019' and 'Summer Numbers 2020'. Regular visitors to this page should need no introduction to the respected London-based label, and with the album packing a whopping 26 tracks, there's certainly no space to give you a full blow-by-blow rundown: suffice to say that whether you're a fan of sparkling boogie nouveau, sumptuous string-drenched disco, deep 'n' groovy house, headnoddin' Balearica or any combination thereof, this is a comp you're gonna want to check for. Standouts for yours truly include Kiosko 33's Chuck Roberts-biting 'Theory Of House' and Kristoff MX's 'Funk With Me', but you'll find your own I'm sure...

Not Easy (original mix) - (6:26) 95 BPM Hot
Review: After putting out three Mixed Bags on Wall Of Fame and other material for Hot Digits, FKR and Editorial, P Sol lands on DiscoDat! His entrance is a laid back one with the lazy Sunday vibes of "You Left Me", while "Six Machine" is amplified funk with trumpeting horns, walking basslines and sassy vocals. "Not Easy" ventures down a soul route leaving the flutey "Harlem River Drive" to seal the deal of a great four-track release.

Auf Dem Dub (Psychemagik edit) - (6:48) 93 BPM
Review: These guys have been flying the flag for quality amongst the disco re-edit community for a while now. This two-tracker is being hailed as one of their best yet, with the title track being a lean, super-perky chopped up floor filler with infectious female vocals and a just-go-with-it Euro-rap. The second cut is from the other side of the tracks: it's the type of slow n sleazy new wave-disco tune you can imagine in a dark early 80s New York fleapit, where the cast of Liquid Sky hang and dance in a beautifully nonchalant manner.

Laura Bitto - "Trinidad" - (4:20) 90 BPM
Review: Italian label Mondo Groove (part of the Cinedelic family) bring us a six-track collection of obscure female-vocalled cuts from early 80s Italy, with tracks ranging from the gloriously camp Italo-disco of Gioia's "No Secrets" to the straight-up synth-pop of Patrizia Pellegrino's "Bandito" via the cod calypso of Laura Bitto?s "Trinidad" and the Laura Branningan/Pat Benatar-isms of Virna Anderson's "Life Sound". Those with a strong aversion to gorgonzola and mozzarella should probably steer clear but if you can handle the Eurovision-ish aftertaste then Simona Gay's "This Night" has a certain wry charm.

Review: 14 years have passed since Benji B and Judah established their monthly Deviation parties in London. This fine compilation celebrates the club's legacy and sound, which famously touched on all manner of soul-fired musical styles whilst keeping one eye (and both feet) on the dancefloor, with Benj B selecting cuts that never failed to rock the party. Expect a mixture of skewed, bass-heavy beats (Dorian Concept, James Blake, 00Genesis), heady instrumental hip-hop (Waajeed, Damn Funk remixing Baron Zen), Afro-funk (K Fimpong), peak-time UK bass mutations (Pearson Sound, Martyn, Mala), high-grade deep house (Gilb'r remixing Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish) and a smattering of genuine scene anthems (Detroit Experiment, Maurice Fulton's remix of Alice Smith, DJ SPen presents DJ Technic).

All are retweaked big pop hits, highlights of which being reworkings of boozy party anthems such as Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting", Duran Duran's "Notorious", Tom Jones' "Its Not Unusual" and (a particularly good electro-house reworking of) ELO's "Last Train To London".

Just Give Love A Try - (4:11) 96 BPM Hot
Review: Here's your chance to get hold of a little piece of music history! Ben White was a session musician who played on records by Marvin Gaye and the Salsoul Orchestra, among others, but whose solo career added up to just two singles, including this one which originally came out on LA Records back in 1982. Now it gets a second crack of the whip courtesy of crate diggers extraordinaire Athens Of The North, with 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' an ultra-slick slice of early 80s boogie while the accompanying 'Just Give Love A Try' treads a more syrupy, soulful path.

Feel Like Dancin' - (3:44) 93 BPM
79.5 (feat LaDawn Black) - (1:17) 91 BPM
Review: Brooklyn-based five-piece 79.5, headed up by singer, songwriter and bandleader Kate Mattison, released their debut long-player 'Predictions' on Big Crown Records in 2018 and now, five years on, they follow it up with their self-titled sophomore outing on Razor-N-Tape. '79.5' opens with the sax-sporting late-night dancefloor groover 'Club Level', but after that the tempo seldom goes much beyond walking pace, making this an album that's probably best suited to post-club listening, with one slow jam after another bringing hints of R&B, smooth jazz and bittersweet Adult Oriented Pop, and with an 80s-sounding sax line never far away. It'll be too polite for some - the sweary 'B.D.F.Q' notwithstanding - but you just KNOW babies will be made to this...

Review: Volume 66 of the Katakana Edits is nothing but vibes from start to finish, and surely exactly what we need in the blazing summer months - edits, edits, and nothing but more edits! SO|KA's opening "Grease" is a dubby, weighty house chugger that blends effortlessly with juat about any form of dance tune, while DJ Laurel's "Lost In The Crowd" is a disco charmer that leads with horns and is backed by pumping beats, leaving the final "All Or Nothing" to provide the seductive charms thanks to a gentle r&b charm. Beautiful stuff.

Tonight (feat Amunda) - (4:36) 93 BPM
Review: Over the last few years, disco and boogie loving funkateer Shaka Loves You has proved to be one of the most reliable artists on Bomb Strikes. Further proof arrives in the shape of "Tonight", a two-track single that's as summery as rain-soaked festivals, abandoned backyard barbeques and post-work beer garden drinking sessions. Vocalist Amunda stars on "Tonight", a unique blend of R&B, synth-driven reggae and Balearic boogie that has all the makings of a smile-inducing radio hit. If it's heavy dancefloor thrills you're after, virtual B-side "Disco Weapon" will do the trick; its' low-slung bassline, razor sharp horns, fizzing synth lines and rousing horns are tailor-made to guarantee dancefloor devastation.

Marti Caine - "Love The Way You Love Me" - (5:40) 93 BPM
Review: Given his encyclopedic knowledge of music, you'd expect any compilation put together by Bill Brewster to be full of unlikely gems and lesser-known anthems. That's certainly the case with After Dark, the first in a new DJ-focused series from the Late Night Tales camp. From start to finish, Brewster's selections are spot on, from the lowdown, slo-mo disco oddness of Sheffield chanteuse Marti Caine's "Love The Way You Love Me" and wide-eyed, acid-laden kosmiche of Coober Peder University Band's "Moon Plain", to the dirty electrofunk of Zed Bias's "Koolade" (featuring Toddla T, of all people) and mid'80s percussion fest of Martin Kershaw's "Keep On Pokin". If that wasn't enough, Brewster has also unearthed a decent Jamiroquai record. The wonders never cease.

By Any Other Name - (6:12) 99 BPM
Review: The next digital EP from Masterworks Music comes from 'That Needs An Edit' lads Pete Le Freq and Jon Baker-Hood (Alpaca Edits) with five quality disco grooves. "Nites Of Disco" features a familiar hook that those in the know surely will notice. This is a clever edit of one properly funky and lo-slung groove. A slow and sensual deep disco joint follows, that is quite possibly an edit of a certain pop king on "Let Me Show You". Elsewhere "Grover's Magic" is indeed the title track and on this one they've borrowed from yet another all time classic: no guesses here! Finally "By Any Other Name" takes things into slo-mo territory on this much needed chill and late night number - for lovers to get sexy on the dancefloor! Their aforementioned Alpaca Edits is a seriously hot label at the moment, that has had some releases by top names such as Dr. Packer, Andy Buchan, RockNRolla Soundsystem and the charmingly titled C Da Afro.

Ron's Reworks Vol 4
134
The Cull - (3:24) 97 BPM
Review: Since launching on vinyl in 2019, the Ron's Reworks series from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam has consistently delivered high-quality reworks that tend to shy away from the obvious and over-played. The standout on the series' fourth missive is undoubtedly 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

DJ Koze - "Homesick" (feat Ada) - (4:11) 97 BPM
Review: Most DJs tend to see the DJ Kicks series as an excuse to not only show off their DJ skills, but also the eclectic nature of their music collections. That's the approach Jayda G has taken on her fine instalment, delivering a breathlessly brilliant mix and a selection of unmixed tracks that genuinely has something for every occasion. After beginning with the deep disco of Light of the World, Aged in Harmony and Glass Beams, the Ninja Tune artist offers up a mixture of 21st century Afro-soul (Kokoroko), dubbed-out Brit-funk (Atmosfear), synth-laden '80s soul (Don Blackman), sample-rich 21st century house (Gerry Read), chunky dancefloor deepness (Naomi Darkness, DJ Boring), Motor City-inspired futurism (LNS, Fit Siegel), sub-heavy techno (Haai) and dusty future R&B beats (DJ Koze).

Too Slow To Disco Edits 13: Ben Jamin
136
Moment Is Real - (6:48) 90 BPM
Review: Scouse disco misfit Ben Jamin makes his bow on Too Slow To Disco's popular edit series, following a handful of rock-solid releases for the likes of Hot Digits, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Gorilla. He starts in fine fashion with 'Dreams', an unashamedly groovy and loose-limbed tweak of a sweet, loved-up disco number complete with undulating bass guitar, misty-eyed lead vocals and tactile turn-of-the-80s instrumentation, before opting to rearrange a more urgent (at least energy-wise) chunk of orchestrated disco hedonism on 'I' Yours'. The Liverpool-based producer slows things down further on sub-100 BPM synth-soul number 'Conclusion', before returning to warmer and woozier pastures on the effortlessly atmospheric, bass-heavy and filter-sporting bliss of 'Moment Is Real'.

Review: While there's no doubt that Ture Sjoberg has released some good records under the Beatfanatic guise, his best work has often been done under the Beatconductor pseudonym. Here he resurrects the name for a five-track stroll through some of his most successful recent re-edits and reworks in a Scando-learic style. So, we get a shorter version of his legendary Vangelis re-jig ("Let It Happen"), a smooth Roxy Music tweak ("Turn U On Again"), a longer edit of White Isle fave "Willow Man" and a seriously dubbed-out extension of old skool electro/cosmic disco groover "Le Club". Oh, and a super-Balearic remake of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall".

What About Nile? - (6:54) 95 BPM
Review: Alpaca Edits founder Pete Le Freq is on a roll at the moment, with a string of high-grade EPs still to drop in coming weeks. "Burnin" is the first of these and is every bit as essential as the producer's previous edit EPs. He starts in confident mood offering up a groovy, subtly beefed-up revision of a Gwen McRae classic that wisely gives dcue prominence to the original track's killer bassline. "Turn Your Love" sees the friendly Freq get busy with filter tricks on a breezy version of a 1980s George Benson favourite, while "Dreamin' The Dream" is a driving, low-slung revision of a powerful disco-funk workout. Arguably best of all, though, is "What About Nile", a gently breezy, filter-sporting slab revision of a sleek, chic and lovelorn disco classic.

Review: There is always a good backstory to the music that Emotional Rescue releases and this EP is a case in point. It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. A selection of them feature on this, the first of two EPs from the pair.

Zamboozee - (3:42) 96 BPM
Review: For the uninitiated, The Gaff is a Canada-based DJ, producer and prodigious maker of "party breaks" - shorthand for re-edits and reworks that should appeal for those DJs for whom loose rhythms are of more interest than a straight 4/4 pulse. This first contribution to the digital-only Katakana Edits series is full of funk and soul-laden jams with heavy but snappy drums. There's a global feel, too, with excellent forays into afro-funk ("High Life") and Latin beats ("Mambo Number 5"). While all four tracks are carefully tuned to the needs of dancefloors, the afro-flecked disco-funk grooves of "Funny Saga" stands out.

Named in honour of their radio show and regular parties in Glasgow, Joints & Jams offers up a hugely entertaining (and largely floor-friendly) mixture of funk-fuelled hip-hop (Bastien Keb, Fort Knox Five, Andy Cooper), skanking reggae (The Nextmen and Gentlemen's Dub Club sing-along 'Done It Again'), flash-fried funk breaks (the Allergies), tropical goodness (DJ Nu-Mark's hook-up with Quantic), and various fusions of disco, boogie and funk (see the cuts from Kraak & Smaak, X-Ray Ted, Pablo & Shoey and Shaka Loves You themselves). The result is a brilliantly mixed-up collection of tried-and-tested dancefloor bombs.

This 11 track album produced by Amp Fiddler & Yam Who? includes the massive 'Soul Fly' sounding like a Mark Ronson production had he been hanging out with George Clinton's Parlet followed by the bonafide P-Funk anthem 'Steppin' both featuring the stunning vocals by the Dames Brown girls. Amp Fiddler is credited for taking both a young J Dilla and also Q-Tip under his wing teaching them his Akai MPC techniques, setting the path for some of Hip Hops finest recordings which have defined the shape of things to come. His musical collaborations & current duties include: Moodymann's musical maestro, keyboard wizard for Theo Parrish's live band, a longstanding Funkadelic member, co-writer for Sly & Robbie, Prince, Maxwell, Jamiroquai & Seal to name a few.

Be Svendsen - "Moments" - (4:57) 90 BPM
Review: When Be Svendsen dropped a teaser single for this long-awaited debut album last month, we commented that his productions are becoming far more mature, varied and musically detailed. "Between A Smile and a Tear" emphatically proves our point, shuffling between melodious, mid-tempo Balearic deep house ("Falling"), crackling, jazzy and folksy soundscapes (the brilliant title track), dub disco-influenced wonky synth-pop ("Drop The Gun"), Italo-disco revivalism ("Andromeda"), blissful ambient business (the delightful "Moments"), cosmic rock ("Hazy Eyes") and dewy-eyed, impressively impressive vocal numbers ("October Letters"). In other words, he's finally delivered the album he's been capable of for some time. Don't sleep.

Review: Disco Tech's re-edit label DiscoDat has earned itself a strong reputation due to its relentless stream of high quality reworks. Here, on the Metropolis EP, they look towards Fritz Lang for some inspiration, but beyond the titles and cover, the mysterious Rare Cuts stick to '70s grooves. There are four tracks to immerse yourself in, with our favourites being the smooth and jazzy soul ballad "Sweetest Pain" and the suspended tension of tight and funky space jam "Get It Up".
