Too Slow To Disco Edits 12: DJ "S"
251
Groovin' - (6:52) 96 BPM Hot
Back Again - (5:23) 91 BPM
Review: If it's slow-motion dancefloor thrills you seek, Too Slow To Disco's popular re-edit series should already be on your radar. The latest EP in the series, which comes courtesy of experienced Greek scalpel fiend DJ S, is a predictably strong offering. The sometime Chopshop contributor shows his class throughout, delivering revisions that add a little more weight whilst allowing his source material room to breathe. He starts by offering his version of a much-loved downtempo disco classic, wisely extending the original version's instrumental passages before introducing the lead vocal ('Groovin'), before dipping the tempo further on the seductive is-it-soul-or-is-it-disco brilliance of 'Sweet Love'. 'Back Again' is a languid chunk of sun-splashed slow motion disco rich in jazzy guitar licks and meandering sax solos, while 'U' is a glassy-eyed, loved-up treat.

On The Way To Memphis - (3:55) 96 BPM
Review: Cal Gibson AKA Secret Soul Society returns to French label Citizens Of Vice with four new cuts that throw a proper melange of styles into the blender. 'On The Way To Memphis' is a squelchy, midtempo affair with a soul/blues-style vocal about "leaving Georgia" and being "halfway to Hollywood", yet curiously also has something of an 80s pop feel. 'Ruby Blues' is a dense, shuffling number that bites the vocal from Reuben Wilson's 'Got To Get Your Own' from 1975 and 'Feel The Need' is a sweeping, dramatic slab of synth-disco, while finally 'Whole Wide World' brings the full-on indie-pop vibes.

Review: Since launching earlier this year, Disco Tech's DiscoDat label has picked up a lot of attention within the re-edit community. Here, Disco Tech gathers together a bunch of previously unreleased reworks from some of his pals in the scene. It's a good collection, variously alternating between dubbed-out slo-mo soul (see his own "Stormy", Reflex's "Thrill Is Gone" and Andrew Clarke's excellent "Mellow Blow") and dancefloor disco (Steef's "Whole Lotta Love", B-Jam's cut-up gem "Seen It All"). He also finds space for Copycat's excellent "You'll Like It Too", a gospel-tinged soulful number that should impress all those who like their disco soulful, musical and uplifting.

256
The One I Need - (6:36) 99 BPM
Review: While he's prone to occasional trips into skewed Balearic territory, London-based Grecian Alien Disco Sugar is often at his best when focusing on reworking classic disco and boogie gems. He begins this latest EP with his take on the Whispers' cheery disco standard "And The Beat Goes On", adding tougher beats and a whisper of Italo-style arpeggio chug. "The One I Need" is a deliciously loved-up, string-laden chunk of reworked close-dance disco (think Barry White, and you're close), while "Boogie Body" is the kind of celebratory P-funk jam that evokes images of nappy-clad Funkadelic members gyrating around on stage. Meanwhile, for those that fancy some eyes-closed, slo-mo disco/boogie sweetness, "I Love You More" is almost perfect.

I Can So Give You Love - (7:36) 99 BPM
When She's Gone - (8:01) 96 BPM
Review: Given the sheer volume of material he releases, Alien Disco Sugar is undoubtedly worthy of a "best-of". Happily, Gravity, Stars & Sugar provides just that, gathering together 24 of his best re-edits, remixes, mash-ups and original productions. Unsurprisingly, it's a cheery, fun-time affair, with material veering from the disco-house swing of "Music Sounds Better With You" tribute "Better With You" to sensual, filter-heavy slow jams (see "I Can So Give You Love", in particular), via a swathe of red-hot, dub-flecked disco, boogie, Balearic and P-funk revisions. As if that wasn't enough to tempt you, he's also included a pair "best of" DJ mixes to help entertain you on long drives, train journeys, and during the two weeks you'll have to wait for his next EP.

Dan Wainwright - "Take It Easy" (original mix) - (6:59) 94 BPM
Review: Paper Disco's 'Trash The Wax' series reaches its ninth installment, meaning you've probably got some inkling as to the kind of leftfield-leaning electronic disco grooves that make up most of the album already. That's not to say there's not plenty of variety on offer, though: Dan Wainwright's Beloved-esque 'Take It Easy', for instance, is quite a long way from the rolling, jazz-tinged deep house of J Kara's 'Talk To Me', and quite a long way again from the cosmic/Italo throb of James Rod & Aleito's 'Raum 909'. Jahn Solo's 'Dance For Me' is the one cut here that could be classed as 'trad-style' - otherwise, this is an album that will please those interested in exploring contemporary disco's outer fringes.

Last In The Bin (Unreleased 12inch mix - 2019 remaster) - (5:06) 92 BPM
Review: Though not officially billed as such, what we have here is essentially a 'best of' collection from Tel Aviv's Jean Claude Gavri, featuring a mixture of re-edits and original tracks given some fresh 2019 production sheen, plus a clutch of unheard material. The previously unreleased 'Forever In A Day' is one clear standout, a very polished reworking of Phyllis Hyman's disco/soul classic 'You Know How To Love Me', while also scoring high on the reedit-o-meter is 2013's Bowie-biting 'Les Dance'. Other highlights include the lazy, laidback Balearica of 'Interviews By The Pool', the sprightly pianos of 'Seaside Walk' and another unreleased gem, the more Euro/coldwave-sounding 'Last In The Bin'.

Just Here To Raise Ya (original) - (9:21) 98 BPM Hot
Review: Auckland's Grass Green are at it again with another series of smooth and sexy (not to mention cheeky!) slow-mo house re-edits. And fair play; they're executed pretty darn well, even the man himself Greg Wilson named this in some of his top choice of re-edits of 2013. First up "Just Here to Raise Ya" is yes, you guessed it: The Happy Mondays. Shallow Taxi's "Melody of Creed" reworks M People, but it's good, trust us! Finally and the standout here is Monkey Boots at it again but this time with "Lullaby for Spider Man" reworking The Cure's classic of yes you guessed it: "Lullaby".

Best Of Replay Vol 2: Frico Edits 2003 2013

Don't Stop The Music (Frico edit) - (8:53) 99 BPM
Review: To celebrate the first 10 years of his occasional Replay Records re-edit series, DJ Friction has decided to collect together some of his finest re-edits for the imprints under the Frico moniker. There's naturally much to enjoy, from brilliant '80s NYC style re-dubs of D-Train's "Keep On" and Exodus's "Together Forever" (the latter stretched out to a trippy 13 minutes), to party-friendly cuts of soul and funk classics from Spanky Wilson (the superbly choppy "Sunshine of Your Love") and Peggy Lee (a riotous rework of her classic over of Otis Redding classic "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay"). Friction is, unsurprisingly, reverential to the source material while adding just enough fancy effects and production tricks to emphasize each track's dancefloor potential.

Review: If you've ever wondered what you might hear if Nightmares on Wax man DJ E.A.S.E invited you back to his Ibiza villa for a post-club crack on, this edition of the long-running "Back To Mine" series has all the answers. Naturally, it's as hazy, stoned and soulful as you'd expect, with the Warp Records stalwart shuffling between stunning hip-hop soul (Children of Zeus, Ladi6), deep synth-soul (Creative Principle), sun-kissed good-time grooves (Bosq, Massimo Vaoni), Imagination-sampling nu-disco (Dim Zach), simmering jazz-funk (Chieftain) and dubby early NYC house flavas (SBM). There's naturally also a sprinkling of his own productions, including a loved-up, string-laden house version of "Russia" by Fat Freddy's Drop.

Beatin' Tha Breaks (Freddie Joachim remix) - (4:08) 91 BPM
Review: Brooklyn label Razor-N-Tape get in on the Record Store Day action with this special edition of Beatin Tha Breaks from Nashville-based Magic In Threes. It's the remixes that come first, with Dutch artist Fouk going into similar house territory to Kenny Dope with plenty of live instrumental touches blessing the bristling percussion. It's a totally different vibe on the Freddie Joachem remix, with the Californian opting for some midtempo funk breaks that stay closer to the sound of Magic In Threes' original version. This closes out the RSD release on the B-side and is an easy-breezy affair dripping with soulful guitars and harmonies.

Spats - "Hot Summer Madness" (original mix) - (3:27) 92 BPM
Review: For the sixth instalment in Z Records impeccable "Under The Infliuence" series of crate-digging compilations, boss man Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro) has turned to fellow London scene veterans Simon and Robin Lee, AKA Faze Action. Their selections are, as expected, superb, mixing their own edits of familiar favourites (Midway's ace "Set It Off" and Mikki's "Dance Lover" for starters) with material that's as obscure and over-looked as you'd expect. Standouts in the latter category include the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco of Bebe Manga, the thrillingly up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements", some superb South American disco from Don Lurio and Michele Claire's lesser-known version of disco favourite "In The Bush".

Come On - (4:45) 95 BPM
Review: The Katakana Edits series reaches #70. DJ Laurel - also known for his work on Greek label Chopshop - is once more in charge of the virtual razorblade and sticky tape for this latest collection, which draws largely on source material from the 70s soul pantheon. 'I Can't Stop Ya' adds an outsourced spoken vocal and some fine sax noodling to a Ty Karim nugget of (nearly) the same name, 'It Only Happens' lends the late, great Aretha some extra lounge-y swing, while 'The More I Want' dares to take on the Teddy Pendergrass classic and actually manages to get away with it.

Review: Antton is the latest addition to the Ibiza club scene, as resident DJ at several hotspots such as Ushuaia Tower, Cafe Del Mar, Es Vive Hotels Experience Bar and The Beach Star Hotel - where he is also the music director. He comes to Hot Digits armed with a plethora of sultry poolside reworks and classic vibes, which the label themselves perfectly described as' perfect for warming up or firing off!' From the lo-slung soul power of "Alejarse", classic slo-mo disco on the rather sultry "El Dolor Mas Dulce" (with Dimitry Soul) or "Ve Mas Despacio" respectively. Lastly, label head honcho Fingerman gets on board with an extended re-edit of "Milagro".

Review: 'Balearic' was never meant to be a genre: originally, it was about playing all different kinds of music regardless of genre. The latest 'Cafe Del Mar' comp recently reminded us all of that and now, just to underline the point, here comes Vol 6 in Midnight Riot's 'Balearic Headspace' series, which packs in everything from Hi-Fi Sean's deep acid bubbler 'Sunshine Dub' to Amma's fine, fragile and near-bruk Sade cover, via ultra-mellow piano house from Hypnotic Lovers, spaced-out midtempo boogie from Shalvoy, 80s Europop stylings courtesy of Frank Karma and more besides... including, yes, a very 'Balearic', female-sung Steve Miller Band cover from Dominic Dawson.

Review: Get ready to boogie till you drop as Montenegro-based scalpel fiend Mitiko offers up a seven-track selection of lightly beefed-up re-edits. There's plenty of tried-and-tested fun to enjoy, from the chugging, synth-sporting disco-rock antics of "Boogie Till We Drop" and the surging K.I.D rework business of "I'll See It Again", to the low-slung swamp funk sleaziness of "Music Is Her Lover" and the rubbery boogie-soul goodness of slap-bass sporting workout "Won't You Blame Me". Wisely he's included a smattering of superb slow jams, too, with the '80s soul shuffle of "Out Of The Night Time" and slow disco groover "It's Over, It's Over" standing out.

So Much Time - (5:16) 93 BPM
Review: This is number 15 in the series, which means most self-respecting disco buyers will have a good idea what to expect here as St Petersburg-based Sunner Soul (AKA Alexander Chebankov) serves up 15 of his recent productions for his own Vintage Music label. As a scroll through past reviews will confirm, Chebankov's work has spanned a variety of disco- and funk-driven styles over the years, but after a couple of more late 70s-sounding tracks at the start it's largely (though not exclusively) 80s-inspired, boogie-esque grooves that predominate this time out. There's no clear, head-and-shoulders standout to these ears, but 'Super Ice Cream' and 'No One Can Like I Do' would be good places to start...

B-Jam - "Everyday" - (5:05) 95 BPM
Review: The scalpel fiends and rework hounds behind the Editorial label rarely disappoint, and this latest split EP is packed with floor-friendly midtempo goodies. The most revelatory cut of all is Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee's "Slow Fire", a delicious 109 BPM bumper that re-casts Gwen McRae's electrofunk-era disco bomb as a stoned head-nodder. It works so well that you wonder why nobody's done it before. Elsewhere, there's some sweet groovery from Feza, a surprisingly percussive disco-funk jam from the usually dawdling 78 Edits, and a decidedly Balearic jazz-funk excursion from Manmademusic and Freshtone. Really, it's only the usually on-point B-Jam who lets the side down with the so-so "Everyday".

Review: Delivering us some stellar remixes over the years with their 2007 DJ Kicks edition and their Bugged Out mix (2009), a new Hot Chip mix or compilation is always welcome - especially in 2020! Fine selectors of immaculate taste, this mix brings us new and exclusive tracks from artists like Beatrice Dillon with the chilled and resonating "Workaround Two" to Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's beatless and exotic "Who I Am & Why Am I Where". Added to that list is a deeper and drum laden synth groove from Fever Ray to some contemporary classical and emotive minimalism from Berlin's Nils Frahm. Hot Chip themselves 'chip in' with their own vocal cover of "Candy Says" alongside other contemporary avant pop numbers from Charlotte Adigery and Mike Salta's housey and happy "Hey Moloko". Late Night Tales and dreams from the future. Hot Chip!

Review: Robbie Blanco's Melbourne-based re-edits label serve up a third 'best of' collection in honour of their fifth birthday. To call these 're-edits', though, is perhaps to do them something of a disservice: whlle many re-editors will simply loop up the familiar parts of a much-loved classic, Redux Inc like to get a little more hands-on, to the extent that some of these tracks are really closer to covers or sample-based 'tributes'. Either way you get some familiar cuts from the likes of the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Lonnie Liston-Smith and Jackie Moore mixed in with slightly more esoteric nuggets, all capably rejigged for maximum contemporary dancefloor appeal.

Review: Following scalpel-wielding missions on Katakana Edits and Springbokz, the Rocknrolla crew returns to the warm bosom of Alpaca Edits. The Dutch four-piece is in fine fettle throughout, serving up a trio of reworks that dig deep in the crates for inspiration. First up, they make merry with a drowsy cover version of all-time jazz classic "Fever", combining their source material's lounge jazz instrumentation with subtle nods towards dubby deep house. "Benson's Ghetto" sees the edit quartet brilliantly combine elements of an impassioned Philadelphia Soul era disco classic with sunshine jazz guitars and freestyle vocals reminiscent of George Benson, while "Father Father" is a wonderfully chugging take on a disco-era blue-eyed soul gem.
