Strings For Life EP

Strings For Life - (6:50) 122 BPM
School Daze - (5:52) 120 BPM Hot
Sophisticated Funk - (4:57) 120 BPM
Review: Oliver Dollar, a Berlin-based artist who first appeared on Rekids as a remixer in 2012, has returned to Radio Slave's label with his 'Strings for Life' EP. The EP's title track begins with rich and stirring strings that add soul to the track. The song is warm, euphoric, and built on a rocksteady disco groove, making it both familiar and classic. 'School Daze' is a loopy track with funky bass, jazzy chords, and timeless house drums topped off with a retro vocal sample. The EP's final track, 'Sophisticated Funk,' features an epic, emotive beatdown, and Dollar doubles down on the disco. Oliver Dollar brings a very different sound to Rekids with this EP, which is full of joyous and lush tunes.

DJ Kaos Chronicles with Daniel Wang, Erlend Oye, Solomun, Dr Dunks, Jolene and The Glimmer Twins

Dangerous Dan & Nicky Night Time - "Mystery" (edit by DJ Kaos) - (7:02) 122 BPM Hot

Spiral Jetty (Glimmers mix) - (7:35) 122 BPM
Horny Morning Loop (Dr Dunks Kaotic mix) - (9:07) 124 BPM
Review: It may be an 'odds and ends' release, featuring as it does a mixture of originals, remixes and edits, but DJ Kaos's latest offering is packed to the rafters with high-grade gear. Kaos first offers up his disco sample-heavy edit of Dangerous Dan and Nicky Night Time's 'Mystery' before we're treated to Solomun's hypnotic-but-loose-limbed early morning revision of Kaos's 'I Want To Be There'. His tweak of Daniel Wang and Erland Oye hook-up 'Lessons' is a hybrid deep house meets drowsy nu-disc affair, while 'Only Dead Men Are Free' is a fine fusion of Patrick Cowley style Hi-NRG grooves and elements of country classic 'Jolene'. To round things off, we get two top remixes: the Glimmers' throbbing, wide-eyed sprint through 'Spiral Jetty', and extended Dr Dunks disco-meets-acid house revision of 'Horny Morning Loop'.

Right Down Here (Psychemagik remix) - (6:13) 96 BPM
I'm Gonna Dance (Jitwam remix) - (4:40) 125 BPM
Review: Buoyed by the success of the Dimitri From Paris remixes of 'Space Talk', Naya Beat has decided to offer up more new reworks of classic cuts from the disco-era catalogue of Indian singer and actress Asha Puthli. Naturally Space Talk gets another tweak - Maurice Fulton delivers a sparse, percussive, dubbed-out take in his inimitable style -but there are plenty of revisions of lesser-celebrated cuts to enjoy. Yuksek turns 'I Am Song (Sing Me)' into a hybrid storming soul/surging Moroder-disco workout; Kraak & Smaak go all deep disco on the dreamy 'Lies'; Turbitto & Ragz add a touch of delay to the Indian disco-goes-Salsoul flex of 'One Night Affair'; 'Right Down Here' is turned into a spaced-out cosmic disco number by Psychemagik; and Jitwam adds a touch of 21st century weight to suspenseful disco gem 'I'm Gonna Dance'.

Review: Number three in a series whose title was self-explanatory to start with, so you should have a pretty good idea what's going on here as re-editor par excellence Alkalino makes free with 11 more nuggets from days of yore. Getting the treatment this time are Prince's '1999', Michael Jackson's 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough', Dire Straits' 'So Far Away', Rocksteady Crew's 'Hey You', Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing', King's 'Love And Pride', Visage's 'Move Up', The Smiths' 'Bigmouth Strikes Again', The Stranglers' 'Always The Sun' and a couple of unidentified cuts (one of which sounds like it might be The Human League while the other has a Front 242/Meat Beat Manifesto-like feel)... some surprising sources there for sure, but they're all handled with Alkalino's trademark aplomb so listen with open ears!

Review: Some unabashedly old skool disco fun and frolics on this five-tracker from Italy's Ministry Of Funk, and his publicity-shy oppo Disco Incorporated. A lively re-edit of MJ's 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' kicks the EP off in party-hearty style; after that, 'Golden Melody' brings very familiar sweeping, soaring strings, 'Back Into Time' will please New Yorkers whether they were born there or are just on an odyssey (hint hint!) while 'High Steppin' and 'Soul Woman' revisit dancefloor staples from Love Unlimited, with the latter throwing in a well-known snatch of Peech Boys vocal for good measure.

Review: Dave Lee has described this epic album, his first under the lesser-known AC Soul Symphony alias, as not only a 'labour of love', but also a tribute to the soaring string sounds and musically expansive arrangements that marked out work by original 1970s disco acts such as the Salsoul Orchestra, MFSB and Love Unlimited. Predictably, Lee has delivered and then some, serving up a string of epic disco workouts that flit between sax-laden mid-tempo beauty ('Windy City Theme'), soaring Philly Soul revivalism ('The Philly Avengers', with its jammed-out, Billy Preston style electric piano licks), seductive slow-jams ('Music For Your Pleasure'), elongated invitations to hit the dancefloors ('I Want To See You Dance'), sparkling disco-funk ('AC Express'), Salsoul-esque outings ('Seneca Village') and tributes to disco greats ('The Talented Mr Adams', which doffs a cap to the great Patrick Adams).

Review: If you thought the first 'Crazy P Curates' compilations was a wild ride, hold on tight because this one is a rollercoaster through the sonic cosmos. 20/20 Vision Recordings continues to deliver musical treasures, and this fourth volume is a testament to the Notts scene stalwarts' commitment to championing tunes that make you move and groove. Kicking off this sonic escapade is the Scandi-disco maestro Ray Mang, weaving his magic with lush cosmic melodies and nu-disco beats that are so loose-limbed, they could moonwalk on their own. Funk alert: this is not your average trip through the cosmos; it's a funkadelic joyride through the galaxy. Next up, Tigerbalm takes us on a detour to a tropical oasis with "Cosmic Union" featuring the enchanting vocals of Joy Tyson. Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bring the heat. Ruf Dug joins the sonic expedition with "Vape Quarter Rhythm," a mind-bending blend of proto-house and dreamy Italo bliss-out. Closing out this auditory voyage is Ibiza's Tuccillo with "Siroco," a signature Balearic gem that's as carefree as cocktails by the sea at sundown. It's the kind of track that makes you want to kick off your shoes, feel the sand between your toes, and let the music carry you away on a sea breeze. The love affair between 20/20 Vision and Crazy P is like a cosmic dance, and this fourth installment is a testament to their enduring relationship.

Review: This is the fourth volume in the series, so you should have the idea by now: Audaz boss Alkalino revisits his youth by taking on pop hits (mostly) from the late 70s and 80s, often reworking the most unlikely source material into dancefloor gold. This time out, though, he's cast his net a little wider, with sources including Jimmy Soul's 1963 calypso hit 'If You Wanna Be Happy', The Chordettes' 'Mr Sandman' from 1954 (an unexpected standout), Sixto Rodiquez's 'Sugar Man' from 1970 and Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line' from 1956, as well as the more par-for-the-course likes of The Clash's 'Guns Of Brixton', Stan Ridgway's 'Camouflage', M's 'Pop Muzik' and Paul Hardcastle's '19'.

Review: Long-serving producer Disco Tech has released more edits and reworks over the years than we've had hot dinners. Remarkably, he still continues to deliver on-point revisions - as this second volume in his ongoing 'Reworks' EP series proves. There's much to admire across the six tracks on show, from the atmospheric, slow-burn excellence of AOR disco revision 'Stars In The Ghetto' and the dub-funk wonder that is the James Brown-sampling 'Boss', to the peak-time '80s disco sing-along 'Take Time' and the on-point Clash dub disco revision 'Magnificent'. We also recommend 'Be With You', a deliciously groovy, dubbed-out take on a Doc Severinsen track that has long been a DJ Harvey favourite.

Review: Lorenz Rhode and Dam Swindle's Lars Dale have joined forces to create Sound Support, a brand new collaborative project. Their debut release is a must-have for house music enthusiasts, featuring an impressive collection of peak-time ready tracks that will get you moving. The title track, 'Higher,' seamlessly blends chunky disco-house loops with warm, jazzy-funk flavors, reminiscent of the Sound Stream era. 'Bump Into You' is a stirring disco-house anthem with an epic string arrangement that's just waiting to take center stage. 'Work 2 It' offers a nostalgic, bassline-driven, warehouse-ready track that will transport you back in time. 'The Rock' rounds off the release with a fusion of boogie synths, electro-funk basslines, deep house chords, and rolling drums.

Review: John Digweed presents Futuro: a 25-track compilation celebrating 25 years of his hugely influential Bedrock label (established in 1999). Taking in the likes of Bushwacka with tracks like "Lectrobee" to the "Bleu Cobalt" studio collaboration between Digweed, Nick Muir, and Captain Mustache - other notables here include label legends and associates like Marco Bailey, David Morales and Rodriguez Jr. Replete with uplifting melodies, pulsating rhythms and progressive hose suggestions, there's extra slices of techno from Raxon, next to select cuts by Sasha Carassi, Lost Desert, and Weska all the more. Bedrock's best.

He begins with a tasteful, subtly housed-up revision of George Benson ('Come On Out Tonight (House Mix)') and ends with a spruced-up, all-action take on Kate Bush ('Dangerous Games'); in between, you'll find a multitude of party-starting highlights including the low-slung disco-funking of 'Down Down Down (Retouch)', the Philly Soul-goes-house flex of 'Why Don't You', the Barry White-ish 'Ex-Stasy', and soulful Stevie Wonder revision 'All I Do Is Music'.

Review: In which no fewer than 24 rock and indie classics get reworked for the dancefloor. Admirably, the mysterious V avoids the temptation to simply whack a 4/4 kickdrum under everything - in fact, many of the cuts could better be described as remixes or reworkings rather than simple re-edits. Inevitably, some of the resulting concoctions work better than others - and which you think that applies to may depend on your views on the original source material - but if you're looking for a way to drag non-house/disco lovers onto the floor, this collection should serve you well.

Review: Chewy Rubs' 'Ruff Beats' series reaches its fourth instalment in a little over 12 months, with deep, tracky grooves the order of the day once more. 'Keep On Doing It' is a mid-paced affair that tops moody synth sweeps with an echoing male vocal urging us to "keep on doing it like that", 'My Definition' is a more driving, house-ified cut that gets free 'n' easy with a Dream Warriors vocal snip, 'Sensations Of The Mind' marries snatches of two well-known vocals to a heavyweight funk bassline and hard-slammin' 4/4s, while 'Swagger' again plunders classic hip-hop from New York, New York (that's a clue!) for vocal inspiration.

Review: Contemporary disco with the funk and soul in full effect is the order of the day on this V/A offering from Ravanelli Disco Club. Vigi's opening 'Loving You' comes from the more discofied end of the deep house and garage spectrum and should be a small-hours cert, after which comes Kousto's 'Save My Soul', which marries rolling tribal drums to a looped soulful male vocal, and as such should work on soul and soulful house floors alike. It's then time to get up, stand up as Sauco's aptly-titled 'Twisted Funk' takes us into struttier territory, before finally Donny Rotten brings the 70s-inspired nu-disco vibes with 'Her Way'.

This release offers a unique fusion of Balearic grooves, left-field funk, and up-tempo backbeats that showcase the distinct US sound. Review: Following the release of Part 15 during the summer, Innervisions drop the latest secret weapons that feature in Dixon and Ame's sets. With a focus on vocals and woozy melodies, this collection captures the energy of the Innervisions owners' DJing. A case in point is the flowing groove and haunting tones of Ivory & Filippo Nardini's "Could You Feel The Love" or Hardt Antoine's woozy, acid-frazzled and appropriately named "Inside Your Mind". On other occasions, the collection veers close to pop territory, audible on the electronic groove of Cipy's "Trip" or flirts with 80s synth pop and electronic disco on Samantha Loveridge's "The Pusher". But no matter the direction, like all previous selections, Secret Weapons 16 makes for essential listening.

Review: Although Alkalino has re-edited all sorts of music over the years, disco, boogie and Italo-disco tracks have always been his bread and butter. He's taken a different path on his latest release, offering up 'Transgenre Edits' that touch on a wide variety of sounds and styles. There's much to admire throughout, from the 105 BPM conscious soul-goes-dancing headiness of 'Songs That I See' and the weirdo disco-rock-goes-Italo-disco throb of 'Angry Eyes' (a take on a legendary 1979 by Skatt Bros) to the effervescent jazziness of 'Sad Sax' (an edit of the track sampled by Mr Scruff on 'Get a Move On'), the muscular, mind-mangling synth-disco throb of 'Angel Dust' and the bouncy Tango-disco rush of 'Funana'.

Review: Glitterbox knows how to throw a party, and "Glitterbox Archives Vol 4" proves it once again. This EP collects four previously unreleased, dancefloor-tested gems, each offering a unique flavour of the label's signature sound. Kicking off with a bang is The Shapeshifters' "Try My Love (On For Size) (The Rub Dub)". This extended version of the already infectious disco anthem dives deeper into its groove, layering dubby effects and pulsating basslines that will have you moving right away. Next up, Michael Gray and Kelli Sae's "You're Gonna Make Me Dub Somebody Else" takes things down a notch. The "dub" moniker lives up to its name, stripping away some of the original's funk elements and emphasizing the hypnotic rhythm section. Kelli Sae's sultry vocals remain captivating, while the dub treatment creates a more introspective and atmospheric aura. Art Of Tones & Inaya Day's "Give My Love (Piano Dub)" is a revelation. This stripped-down version showcases the song's beautiful piano melody and Inaya Day's powerful vocals in a whole new light. Rounding out the EP is Qwestlife's "Hit It Off (Babert Remix)". Italian house maestro Babert injects his signature energy into the track, transforming it into a driving house anthem. Teni Tinks' vocals are chopped and looped, adding a playful touch to the infectious groove. This one is sure to get the crowd moving and leave them wanting more. A sparkly feast for disco devotees!

Jamie 3:26 & Danou P - "Earl Montana" - (9:14) 122 BPM
Jamie 3:26 & Mr Scruff - "Scrubb It" - (7:10) 117 BPM
Review: Jamie 3:26 may have first found fame as a DJ, re-editor and remixer, but over the last few years he's delivered some killer original productions too - often in cahoots with collaborators. Chief amongst those is fellow Rotterdam resident Danou P, who fittingly features on two of the three tracks on show here. The pair begin in deliciously deep, spacey and loved-up form on 'Love Not', where drifting chords and gentle melodies rise above a bubby bassline, simmering synth-strings and tactile arpeggio lines, before opting for a Montana Sextet-goes-deep house flex on the funky brilliance of 'Earl Montana'. To round things off, the Chicagoan joins forces with the effervescent Mr Scruff on 'Scrubb It', a properly dubbed-out, analogue-rich chunk of proto-house packed to the rafters with mad noises, Latin percussion and wayward electronics.

Review: For the first time since he shared an epic album's worth of 'lockdown edits' in December 2021, Pete Le Freq is back on Alpaca Edits with another red-hot selection of club-ready disco and boogie reworks. He first offers a smoothed-out, mixing-friendly take on a boogie-bass propelled disco number full of simmering strings and twinkling pianos ('Afraid To Freq'), before tweaking a more driving, electric piano-sporting disco number ('Infinity Now'). Those looking for a big dose of dancefloor energy should check the disco-funkin' excellence of 'Close To You', while 'Rescue Sybil' is a tastefully executed revision of a Sybil Thomas boogie classic with freshly metronomic drums.

Review: Following on from the release of her debut album last year and its 'Remixes' counterpart in May, Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm now returns with two fresh tracks that once again showcase female vocalists from around the world. 'Nina' finds her collaborating with transnational duo Farafi, while the accompanying 'Sisters' is graced by pan-African supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique. Both tracks are rooted firmly in traditional African music, with 'Nina' a percussive, chanted affair while 'Sisters' has a more lilting, singsong kinda vibe, but 'Nina' also gets a brace of more house-oriented remixes courtesy of Tel Aviv's Elado (a Razor-N-Tape regular) and Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project.

Review: This impressively expansive collection from experienced remixer Valique showcases some of the best downtempo and Balearic edits from his popular V's Edits series. There's certainly plenty to get the blood pumping and the juices flowing throughout, from a chugging, ten-minute take on Pink Floyd ('Brickwall') and a pleasingly squelchy take on Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams' 'Lose Yourself To Dance' (here renamed 'Lose Your Elf'), to a chunky dub-house re-imagining of Jimmy Cliff classic 'The Harder They Come' and a loopy, hypnotic, mid-tempo disco-rock revision of T-Rex ('Jewelry'). Throw in party-hearty takes on cuts from Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys (an odd but impactful reimagining of 'Good Vibrations') and you have a great value compilation.

Review: Rapidly approaching the 150 mark, Katakana Edits saddles up funk-disco DJ-and-producer outta Brighton - Fray Bentos - for session 139. Holding down the ballroom beats in the disco burning "Stabbed In The Back", get a 11-minute Billie Jean turner in "Re-Clubbed". Bentos adds a classic Marvin Gaye vocal and sax to a '90s UK pop inspired anthem subtle nestled in the background (for a truly euphoric mix) - next to some sublime, sleeper dub techno only the deepest diggers could discover in "Georges Pudding". From disco to dub techno.

Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.

Review: In the vibrant world of disco revival, Fool's Paradise stands as a beacon, resurrecting the electrifying spirit of New York's dance floors with a modern twist. Their latest offering, "Do It To The Music" by Raw Silk, reimagined by UK producer Michael Gray, is a perfect example of this ethos. Here, Michael Gray understands the magic of the 1982 original. He doesn't attempt to erase its essence, but rather polishes it with his signature production magic. The iconic vocals remain, floating effortlessly over a foundation of soulful grooves and shimmering synths. The tempo gets a respectful nudge, propelling the energy without losing the original's laid-back charm. His rework serves as a genuine tribute to the original, infused with his distinctive style characterized by flair and a groove-laden, funk-inspired resonance. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic throwback or a fresh take on a classic, "Do It To The Music" (Michael Gray Remix) delivers.

Review: Canopy's latest release, "Funky Man Dey Sleep" (CNPY006), marks an exciting collaboration between the label and the multi-talented Spanish producer Kiko Navarro, joined by the formidable vocal prowess of Kaleta and the musical virtuosity of The Ibibio Horns. Kiko Navarro, drawing from his vast musical repertoire, skillfully crafts an Afro-infused groove that pays homage to the funk, disco, and afrobeat sounds that once set Nigerian and West African dancefloors ablaze in the late 1970s. "Funky Man Dey Sleep" serves as a spirited tribute to these influential genres, reinvigorating them with a modern twist. Kiko Navarro dons his KOKI persona, unleashing an energetic transformation that propels the listener into a high-octane sonic journey. Here, live bass and horns take a backseat as an insistent and pulsating acid-inspired bassline takes center stage. This switch-up ushers in a chunkier, house-oriented vision that showcases Kiko Navarro's versatility and innovative approach to music production.

Review: Valique's V's Edits reworks have long been some of the most popular re-edits on this platform, with DJs responding not only to their floor-friendly nature but also the wide range of sounds and styles he turns his hand to. So, what's on offer this time around? Well, for starters Yellow Blues is raising money for victims of the war in Ukraine, a country to which Valique has family ties. As usual, it's a mixed bag of goodness, with highlights including a squelchy, TB0-303 speckled take on a Johnny Cash classic, the chugging nu-disco/swamp blues fusion of 'Was It Worth It?', a fine revision of Rodrigues classic 'You Can't Get Away', a housed-up tweak of an old Doors gem ('Learn To Forget') and a toe-tapping, club-ready revision of Kenny Rogers' sing-along 'Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Conidtion is In)'.

Review: With 17 tracks on offer there's no room here to list the source material for every track on this latest re-edits selection from the ever-busy Alkalino, even if we could identify them all - which we can't, because it's fair to say he's dug really deep here to find some gems. No guilty 80s pop pleasures here, just obscure disco, Italo and boogie nuggets expertly repolished to suit modern dancefloors, the arguable exception to that rule being an excellent take on the Detroit Emeralds' 1972 soul/funk classic "Baby Let You Take Me (In My Arms)", here reinvented as "Let Me Kiss You". Other highlights include the lazy, sensual "Feel The Music" and the dreamy jazz-fusion of "Ghetto Blues".

Review: When it landed on vinyl a few weeks back, Leonid & Friends' terrific cover version of Chicago classic 'Street Player' sold out in record time. It's with some relief, then, to find that the track, which was mixed by French disco and house legend Dimitri From Paris, has swiftly made the transfer to digital download. His 'Super Disco Blend Parts I & II' take is an extra-percussive, musically expansive affair which builds brilliantly before unleashing the familiar horns and vocals. He then cycles through various instrument solos as the track progresses. The accompanying dub is, naturally, a more stripped-back and groove-back affair, with the stricture and choice of instrumentation doffing a cap to The Bucketheads' 'The Bomb', the Kenny Dope produced house classic that famously sampled the Chicago track.

Review: Here's another must-check missive of lesser-known and hard-to-find material from DJ Kaos's Jolly Jams label, curated with love by the man himself. Over the course of 12 tidy tracks, we're treated to ambient lusciousness (Superpitcher remixing Kaos's own 'World Turning'), deliciously dubbed-out proto-house (the 'Warehousin' Mix' of Split Secs' 'I'm Not Losing'), mind-mangling psychedelic electronic disco-meets-acid house (Red Axes' 'Promo Only'), dub disco (Slaves of Love and Tavish, whose 'Raw Seduction' is genuinely superb), soaring disco edit action (Spring Break Edit), Sylvester pitched-down and blissed out (Balearic Skip), Kenny Hawkes-ish disco-not-disco eccentricity (Luke Solomon remixing Richard From Milwaukee) and ragging acid tracks (Danny Russell & Timothy Alexander).

Mangala - (5:59) 83 BPM
Tropicalissimo - (5:58) 118 BPM Hot
Ibaye - (5:18) 115 BPM
Review: Following much loved releases on Riot, Tropical Disco and Italy's Full Time Production, Musta delivers us four new irresistible workouts that blend disco sensibilities and a sharp dancefloor aesthetic with an original dose of African rhythms. 'Bamenda' starts proceedings with a laid back, wonderfully wonky vibe, before 'Mangala' ups the ante subtly, being more lively but also lighter and nimbler. 'Tropicalissimo' is the one for the percussion heads, its tumbling timbales paving the way for a bleepy acid house head nodder blessed with Cuban-style vocals and carnival sonics. 'Ibaye' completes the package, surfing a hefty groove but seasoning its beats with the most exotic trimmings. All four are standouts in their own way and the kind of weapons a DJ will be simply itching to drop. A Musta-have release, you might even say.

Melo Do Tagarelo - (4:51) 111 BPM
Maryline - (5:23) 105 BPM
Review: Katakana regular DJ Laurel returns with his latest contribution to the long-running series. First onto the re-editor's table for surgical rearrangement this time around is the mighty James Brown himself, whose 'It's Too Funky In Here' from 1979 gets reinvented as 'Too Funky'. Next comes 'Melo Do Tagarelo', which bites the 1980 Miele cut of (nearly) the same name - widely regarded as the first hiphop record ever made in Brazil - that married the Sugarhill Gang to exuberant Latin brass, before the EP's completed by 'Maryline', Laurel's take on Christian Gaubert's 1979 French jazz-funk gem 'Sweet Maryline'.

HOLDTight - "Afrodisiaaa" - (6:30) 128 BPM Hot
Bill Brewster - "Love Easy" - (5:15) 95 BPM
Review: The first four volumes in the Hot'n'Spicy series came from label head HOLDTight, AKA Fabrice Pinori, a Paris-based producer and re-editor specialising in "psychedelic and Balearic disco," but on this V/A outing he shares the helm with some fellow hardcore vinyl botherers. Whether these are original productions or re-edits is hard to say but Eddie C's 'Big City Freak' is a low-slung disco/funk workout, Paul Older's '7 Days & 7 Nights' is a more uptempo disco romp, HOLDTight's own 'Afrodisiaa' is an Afro-infused funk jam with squelch by the bucketload and finally Bill Brewster's 'Love Easy' drops down into hazy, druggy ALFOS-ish territory.

Too Deep - (7:33) 120 BPM
Review: Boise, Idaho native returns to Rare Wiri with three cuts that are probably best described as "homages" to classic tracks - they're certainly not just straight-up re-edits but whether they're sample-based or essentially covers isn't entirely clear. Either way, if you ever had any love for Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls', Michael Jackson's 'Get On The Floor' and/or Dead Or Alive's 'In Too Deep' but felt they were in a need of a more contemporary make-over, then guess what, you're in luck! 'Good Time Girls' leads the charge for yours truly but the echoing, dubbed-out production on 'Too Deep' deserves a shout too.

Review: The Funk District strikes back with a brand new label that will take you deep down the rabbit hole with a mix of styles and original sounds, not to mention a global reach when it comes to talent. The very first release arrives with four outstanding mixes that combines a smoky blues flavour with laid back funk for uniquely soulful and danceable results. Mixes including a hot reworking from Italy's legendary LTJ Xperience and a smooth collaboration with Argentinian key wizard Sokur. A sumptuous, subtly disco-infused house mix completes the package with a flourish of funky guitar and languid Rhodes piano.

Barbarra - "Stack Up" (V's edit) - (6:11) 110 BPM
Review: A very fine quartet of deep disco re-edits here courtesy of Bulgarian producer V's Edits and his/her/their Vehicle label. First to get the treatment is Marvin Gaye's 'The World Is Rated X', which comes from 'You're The Man', an album that was recorded in 1972 but shelved in favour of 'Let's Get It On'. Convertion's 'Let's Do It', a Leroy Burgess production released on SAM Records in 1980, comes next, followed by an acid-flecked reinterpretation of Bob Marley's 'Could You Be Loved'. V's take on what is seemingly every re-editor's second favourite track after 'Josephine' - Banbarra's 1975 funk classic 'Shack Up' - completes the package.

Tu Tak Tu Tak Tutiyan (Elado's 4 A.M. mix) - (4:45) 123 BPM
Review: Since it first appeared a couple of years ago, Elado's 'Gulab Jamun' rework of Nadeem Khan's 'Bollywood disco' classic 'Tu Tak Tu Tak Tutiyan' has become a firm favourite on dancefloors around the world. Here it returns to Razor-N-Tape via an officially licensed reissue. That take - a squelchy, acid-flecked stomper that puts Nadeem Khan's infectious lead vocals front and centre, alongside jacking drums, looped sections of the original instrumentations and wiggly TB-303 motifs - naturally opens proceedings. It's followed by the previously unheard '4AM Mix', a more intoxicating, exotic and mind-altering dub-style remix that naturally makes more of Elado's bassline and savage acid tweakery. In a word: essential!

Review: A solo outing here for the mysterious Disco Incorporated, who is/are more often found on joint releases with Ministry Of Funk. The 'Love Disco & Funk' EP comprises five cuts that you can file under 're-edits' or 'homage tracks' as you see fit: yes, they're all based on famous tracks from days gone by (from The Trammps, The Jacksons, The Rolling Stones, Odyssey and James Brown), but it should be pointed out that in most cases, a fair bit more imagination/creativity has gone into them than the average re-edit. Which makes this well worth investigating, despite the very familiar sources.

Don't Let The System Get You Down - (7:33) 109 BPM Hot
Deeper - (7:37) 118 BPM
Review: Luca LTJ Trevisi is an Italian scene veteran whose career dates back to the 80s, when he was in at the start of the country's house and acid jazz scenes. He's long been associated with the IRMA label and here fellow label regular Pomante mucks in to help him rework a couple of back catalogue nuggets, 'Don't Let You Down' from 2015 and 'Deeper' from 2019. The former is a mid-paced contemporary funk groover with a heavyweight b-line and parping sax, while 'Deeper' has a slightly housier feel, but either should slot into those modern funk and soul sets nicely.

Review: Now into his 21st year releasing music, Peter Major AKA Opolopo has amassed an incredible catalogue of music, much of which brilliantly blurs the boundaries between disco, deep house, jazz-funk and broken beat. Having spent the last couple of years remixing and re-editing other people's work, Major is now ready to offer up some fresh original productions. He begins in typical impressive fashion via the bouncy, disco-goes-house brilliance of 'Bebeccie's Theme' - all billowing orchestration, cascading pianos, jammed-out jazz-funk synth solos and rolling grooves - before Fouk provide a deliciously jaunty, boogie-tinged disco-house rub of 'Stroke My Disco'. The honeyed vocals of Darian feature prominently on the superbly soulful jazz-house jam that is 'Looking For You', while 'Chocolate Spiders' is a Clavinet-sporting fusion on early '80s jazz-funk and expansive peak-time house.
