Bomb Strikes: Highlights 2023
1
Various
Mr Doris, D-Funk & DJ Vadim - "All Down" (feat N'Fa Jones & Cantaloop - DJ Vadim remix) - (3:30) 145 BPM
Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Clouds - "Lines Of Acid Flow Over You" - (5:32) 146 BPM
Skesa - "Str 645" - (4:32) 142 BPM
Nocow - "Peathon" - (4:34) 148 BPM
Review: Twenty-five years is a long time in any field. In the fast-moving world of electronic music, it's practically an eternity. That Turbo has managed not just to last that long but also to remain fresh says a lot about Tiga's immaculate A&Ring. On Turbo 25, we see the form this takes. There's "You So Pretty", his cheeky electro collaboration with long-time Turbo collaborator Jori Hulkkonen. Audion and Seth Troxler also celebrate the landmark anniversary with the searing techno of "Hate", while The Hacker goes down the industrial route with the slamming "Forcefield". Tiga continues to flirt with pop with the Soulwax edit of "Woke". However, the fact that he has commissioned Gesloten Cirkel of Murder Capital fame to rework "Easy" means he remains as connected as ever with techno and electro's underground. Here's to the next quarter century.

Jehra - "Take It Or Leave It" - (5:35) 145 BPM
VIL & CRAVO - "Plane To Lisboa" - (6:01) 140 BPM
Review: The third instalment of the Monnom Black compilation series sees the respected label delivering its distinctive, hard-edged techno. Villa's "Silhouetten Der Nacht" is a lean roller, while Levzon's "Planga" and Benkhlifa's "Basikstruktur" both deliver a more abrasive, visceral sound. However, the compilation also casts its gaze wide and possesses an impressive range. Umwelt contributes the epic string-led electro of "Echoes of the Storm", while Kashpitzky's hypnotic "Timeline" goes deeper while maintaining a focus on the dance floor. In keeping with this diverse approach, Black III even provides the listener with some ebm, delivered through the pounding, brutalist rhythms of LPV's "Arrival".

The Way - (3:52) 140 BPM
Review: Veteran UK house act Crazy P (aka Danielle Moore, Jim Baron and Chris 'Toddy' Todd) are back with a defiant new long player courtesy of the Walk Dance Talk Sing label. It's been a few years since we've had a album from the group, and this 11-track-strong effort doesn't disappoint. Highlights include the sumptuous opener, the sleepy disco of "Like A Fool", the slinky and soulful synth odyssey "Echo" and the beguilingly honeyed female vocal chorus of the title track. Walk Dance Talk Sing fits the bill for this Saturday's night party or Sunday morning's chillout soundtrack.

Review: For a label that only launched this spring, four volumes of creatively executed party jams is beyond impressive. We reckon this could be Funk Fusion's best yet, too. From Rhythm Scholar's respectfully tripped out twist on "Lucy In The Sky" to Fabioulous Barker's slap-bass blazed take on Skeelow via the funkiest ever version of 2Pac's "California Love", it's an impressive collection that leans towards the more subtle art of editing rather than crass bootleg cut-and-shuts and will have a lot more timeless appeal as a result.

Mala - "Lean Forward" - (5:31) 140 BPM
James Blake - "Love What Happened Here" - (5:34) 140 BPM
Review: 14 years have passed since Benji B and Judah established their monthly Deviation parties in London. This fine compilation celebrates the club's legacy and sound, which famously touched on all manner of soul-fired musical styles whilst keeping one eye (and both feet) on the dancefloor, with Benj B selecting cuts that never failed to rock the party. Expect a mixture of skewed, bass-heavy beats (Dorian Concept, James Blake, 00Genesis), heady instrumental hip-hop (Waajeed, Damn Funk remixing Baron Zen), Afro-funk (K Fimpong), peak-time UK bass mutations (Pearson Sound, Martyn, Mala), high-grade deep house (Gilb'r remixing Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish) and a smattering of genuine scene anthems (Detroit Experiment, Maurice Fulton's remix of Alice Smith, DJ SPen presents DJ Technic).

Back In Time (Mahkina remix) - (5:36) 140 BPM
Review: We don't give out an award for 'best-named new artist' but if we did, Italo Bass Line Technology would be among the strongest contenders! Here, the French duo more than deliver on the name's promise, as they serve up three originals that will have lovers of dark, Italo and cosmic disco out on the floor throwing angular shapes for sure, with 'Back In Time' and 'Pericoloso' sticking faithfully to the 80s blueprint while 'San Trancisco' introduces, unsurprisingly, trancier elements. Mahkina's hard, driving remix of the title track then goes straight for the jugular while Amarcord looks towards dark, throbbing warehouse techno on his remix of 'Pericoloso'.

DJ KAOS PRESENTS: JOLLY JAMS
35

Galling & Gruzis - "Soft Dream" (Mind Fair remix) - (10:21) 140 BPM
Review: Given that DJ Kaos's Jolly Jams imprint has consistently delivered some of the most unsusual and inspired re-edits and reworks around, you'd expect this label compilation to be nigh-on essential. It is, of course, with the eccentric, long-serving producer serving up a mixture of languid, sunset-ready synth-scapes ('Tangerine Stream' by Galling & Gruzis), electro-disco chuggers (Mark E Quark's "Slo-Mo Edit" of 'Doin' It Right'), fiery disco-funk (Bastedos' 'Nobody' and Dany B's 'Gotta Get It'), oddball disco ('Tapping The Source' by DJ Kaos), late-night acid sleaziness (Ivo Del Plado and Tavish's spaced-out 'Raw Seduction'), and glassy-eyed Balearica (Cole Medina). The package also contains a superb, slowed down re-imagining of Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' by Balearic Skip that's simply stunning.

Backstreet Brit Funk Vol 2 Compiled By Joey Negro
45
Joey Negro / Various
Cache - "Jazzin' * Cruisin'" (original mix) - (5:07) 140 BPM
Review: It may have taken eight years, but Joey Negro has finally got round to putting together a follow-up to his superb Backstreet Brit Funk compilation. Like its predecessor, this sequel shines a light on Britain's under-appreciated musical response to the U.S soul, jazz-funk, disco and electro scenes of the late 70s and early 80s. On the whole, the showcased tracks are altogether deeper selections than those found on volume one, meaning obscure highlights come thick and fast. These include - but definitely aren't limited to - the low-slung disco-funk of Rick Clarke's "Potion", the glassy-eyed breeziness of Paradise's "Stop and Think", the footworker-friendly jazz-funk riot of Touchdown's "Ease Your Mind" and the samba-soaked carnival flavours of "Brazeila" by Brazeila. Oh, and a killer dub of Janet Kay's overlooked Brit-boogie classic "Eternally Grateful" that has never before been released.

The Sky Is Yours
47
The Sandpiper - (4:08) 140 BPM
Review: San Francisco trio 40 Thieves have never been particularly productive, dropping a handful of impressive releases over the course of the last decade. It's something of a pleasant surprise, then, to discover that this long-awaited debut album encompasses an impressive 20 tracks. It's exciting to report, too, that The Sky Is Yours is also rather good. Sitting somewhere between low-slung punk-funk, misty-eyed Balearica, slacker dub-rock, stargazing disco, wonky jazz, stripped Italo and bubbly nu-disco, the 20 tracks bristle with sassy alternative attitude and intoxicating underground flavour. It takes a little time to soak it all in, but it's worth the effort; The Sky Is Yours is full of weird and wonderful highlights.

Terremoto Valley Express EP

Cuerpo Y Mente (Younger Than Me remix) - (5:38) 140 BPM
Review: Mexican Theus Mago's "Terremoto Valley Express EP" is a captivating exploration of trance and dance music. This 4-track journey takes listeners on a thrilling ride through driving rhythms, uplifting melodies, and euphoric soundscapes. The EP seamlessly blends elements of classic trance with contemporary dance music influences. Tracks like "Terremoto Valley Express" and "Electric Sun" showcase Theus Mago's ability to craft infectious melodies and driving basslines that wouldn't sound out of place in a trance club. Meanwhile, "Lost in the Echo" takes a deeper dive into atmospheric textures and introspective sounds, offering a brief moment of respite before the final track, "Neon Night," explodes with a pulsating energy.
