Review: Given the prolific output of his Rare Wiri label, it's a wonder Rayko finds time to get in the studio at all. But he does, regularly - and when he's not producing synthy, 80s-flavoured nu-disco jams of his own, he somehow also manages to fit in the odd cheeky re-edit or 20! Here, then, a score of such reworks are served up for your listening and dancing pleasure, with the emphasis firmly on lesser-known gems - sources include Ann Peebles, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Break Machine, Michael Sembello and Earl Flint, as well as US folk-rocker Barbara Keith's version of 'All Along The Watchtower', but there are plenty more that will have to go unidentified. Suffice to say, though, that if funk, disco, boogie, electro and pop from the 70s and 80s float your boat, this collection will leave you positively buoyant!

Review: Four tracks of heavily electronic disco make up this latest V/A collection from Rakyo's Rare Wiri stable. Ilya Santana gets the ball rolling with the ominous, cinematic 'After Dark', before Kay-chi & Keymon drag us onto the early 80s dancefloor with 'Patches Of Light' feat Kally Voo. The label boss himself then steps up with 'Relax Your Body', which looks to styles like cosmic disco, EBM and Belgian new beat for inspiration, before the EP's completed by MR Gee's 'Under The Moonlight', which opens with a mood-setting manic cackle then breaks out into something of a moody, midtempo synth epic.

Review: Four tracks from as many artists make up this latest V/A offering from Rayko's Rare Wiri, with a couple of heavy-hitters sharing the stage with a brace of newcomers. Up first is new boy Billy Woods, who channels early 80s cod reggae vibes on not-unlikable opener 'Reggae Music' before Spanish veteran Ilya Santana shows us how the big boys do it with the surging, euphoric and lightly rock-tinged nu-disco of 'X Factor'. Label chief Rayko then steps up with the decidedly 80s-sounding 'Jabdah' before Leo Zero plays us out with the rawk geetars of 'All Is Fair'.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Broadway - (6:24) 100 BPM Hot
All Around The Watchtower - (6:23) 115 BPM
Give Me Your Love - (7:49) 130 BPM
Review: Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

Review: Rayko teams up once more with Elena Hikari to deliver the pair's second joint long-player, following on the heels of 2023's 'Tu Alma Y La Mia'. But while that first album was good, this one's exceptional! Cinematic, cosmic opener 'Too Much' sets the tone but it's the second track, 'Nunca James', that really hits you in the face: it's a slow-burning monster, with Hikari's haunting vocal earning it a place in the box marked "truly sublime". 'Looking To Edge' is another BIG track that probably needs to be heard on a 4am dancefloor to be truly appreciated; after that you get four more cuts that blur the lines between cosmic/Italo disco, Balearica, coldwave, house and pop (including a new version of 'Extraordinarylove' from the first album) before the title track, another deep, slo-mo chugger, plays us out in very fine style. Excellent work!

Rain - (8:38) 100 BPM Hot
Love Beats - (7:41) 110 BPM
Revogue - (7:06) 116 BPM
Review: Rayko's homage to the 1980s continues as he serves up three more cuts that draw heavily on classics of the decade for inspiration. The pulsating, midtempo 'Rain' gets the ball rolling, with a nice fat bassline that's topped by plinky-plonky synths and snatches of Ann Peebles' classic 'I Can't Stand The Rain' vocal. We then move on to 'Love Beats', which reworks 'Beats Of Love', a minor mid-80s Euro hit for Belgian new wave outfit Nacht Und Nebel, before the magnificent Madge herself gets the treatment on 'Revogue'. 'Rain' gets my vote, just for taking the most radical and daring approach.

Late Nite Tuff Guy - "Wishing" (Late Nite Tuff Guy Dream remix) - (6:27) 99 BPM Hot
Review: Ireland's Get Down Edit's have developed a real reputation for quality, with many established DJs counting themselves as fans. Even a quick listen to this EP and you'll know why: there's no cheese to found, only well crafted reworks of classy tunes allowed. Label bosses Daz and Martin are first up with the string-laden slow motion "Strategy". The Legendary 1979 Orchestra's "Treating Me" is a steamy stomp with a big chorus, while Stephanie Mill's "Put Your Body In It" is beefed up in fine style by Rayko; Last but not least, Late Night Tuff Guy turns Rose Royce's "Wishing On A Star" into an incredible, and almost unrecognisable, trippy electronic odyssey!

Review: Four excellent new funk/soul/disco bombs from the Whiskey Disco label, with some surprising covers and peerless edits for your aural delectation. Anthony Mansfield sets about deconstructing a fresh cover of "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, while fans of Philly/Al Green-esque slow '70s funk will love Cosmic Boogie's soft-touch edit of "How Can You Say Goodbye". Rayko ups the tempo a little with his mix of the boogie wonder "S&M (Sexy Music), while WD label-head Sleazy McQueen has a lot of fun with Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do", looping up instrumental sections just right for a new perspective on this classic Stevie joint.

Touch Down - (6:30) 122 BPM Hot
Hypnotic - (9:09) 115 BPM
Review: We like to imagine Rayko rocking down the street in his sun-drenched Spanish town, blasting out tactile '80s boogie, soul and disco from an over-sized ghetto blaster slung over his shoulder. If this scene were real, then he may well be playing "Disco Thunder", the tidy re-edit that opens his latest three-track salvo. It's a fine slice of 80s disco-boogie goodness rich unclipped guitars, P-funk bass, sparkling synths, electro beats and bold female vocal snippets. If he were feeling particularly bold, he may also press play on "Touch Down", a driving disco-funk revision full of weighty punk-funk bass, crunchy Clavinet lines, spacey synths and dewy-eyed vocal snippets. Should be want to stop and do a bit of break-dancing, dreamy and delay-laden closing cut "Hypnotic" would do the trick.

Amigo - (6:46) 90 BPM
Review: Spanish nu-disco don Rayko (Raico Pe?a) revisits four 60s/70s faves with impressive results. Marvin Gaye's 'Mercy, Mercy Me' becomes lazy, lounge-y groover 'Mercy', with fat live bass and looped snatches of Gaye's vocal floating over the top; Steve Miller Band's 'Fly Like An Eagle' becomes blissy, druggy throbber 'Fly' and Ray Carlos's 'Amigo' is, er, Roberto Carlos's 'Amigo' but a bit more Balearic! The jewel in the crown, though, is 'Dust Woman', a frankly superb reworking of Fleetwood Mac's 'Gold Dust Woman', with added eerie howls, that will cause some real 'WTF?' moments on dancefloors...

Review: Spanish disco don and Rare Wiri boss Rayko has worked with vocalist Elena Hikari on several previous releases in the past, two of which - 'Unite' and 'Testify' - are among the eight tracks that make up their first collaborative full-length. As such you'll have a good idea what to expect already, with synth-y, 80s-inspired disco/pop the general order of the day, from chuggy, hazy opener 'Extraordinary Love' to slightly more abstract and beats-y closer 'Imagina'. But thankfully the sheer quality of Ms Hikari's voice is strong enough to carry it off, with 'Testify' in particular sounding as good as it ever did and the vaguely dark wave-ish 'Unite' and 'A Different Day' adding a little variety.

Testify - (6:40) 118 BPM Hot
A Different Day - (6:21) 94 BPM
Review: Ever-prolific Spanish disco don Rayko is joined once again by regular vocal collaborator Elena Hikari on an EP for Spa In Disco that packs two markedly contrasting cuts. 'Testify' itself is a slice of strutty, attitude-y nu-disco that's almost got something of a mid-00s Nag Nag Nag kinda feel, only with smoother edges... it's a cut that could well cross over onto pop floors, and if such was indeed the aim then the nods to Madge's 'Justify' probably won't hurt either! The tempo then drops right down for the hazy, Balearic 'A Different Day', which has echoes of early AMCA in its juxtaposition of dreamy fem vox and fat, squelchy bass.

Review: Editorial are back with more throwback disco sounds for our decadent dancefloor (guilty) pleasure! Starting out with the sublime deep soul of Slow Steps "We Won't Have To Cry No More (re-work)" they then launch into Los Angeles' Dino (yes, not Gino!) Soccio's "West Athena Funk" which stays on the soul train for a while until the epic boogie drama of Rayko's "Magic Number" ups the tempo, good and proper. Danny Deluxe serves up some summery Balearic vibes on "The Best Years" but they leave the best for last with Sunner Souls' "Show Me Your Love", a funky disco house groove for late night fashion crowds, which is ironically by a Siberian producer! We can dig it!

Only Music Survives - (10:08) 120 BPM
Review: What is there left to say about Rayko and his well-known ability to blur the boundaries between re-edits, remixes and original productions? The Rare Wiri founder is at it again here, delivering a retro-futurist three-tracker featuring some sizzling, mid 1980s style workouts. He begins in mind-bending drug-chug mode via 'Towers', where cosmic synth sounds, sprightly electronic melodies and glassy-eyed female vocals ride a seriously filthy bassline and delay-laden machine drums. 'Foto' is a slightly more up-tempo workout rich in tactile chords and undulating, arpeggiated bass that sounds like a cooler, club-ready instrumental riff on the Pet Shop Boys circa 1986's Please album, while 'Only Music Survives' is a sneaky re-edit of a Bobby Orlando style number smothered in rushing piano solos and cheery synthesizer lead lines.

Love Come Down (Rayko edit) - (5:43) 116 BPM
Review: Spanish edit maestro Rayko pops up on Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint with a clutch of synth-heavy electrofunk re-rubs. As the title suggests, the lead track is a heavyweight cut-up of The Whispers' 1984 Reggie Calloway-produced synth-funk jam "Contagious". Like the rest of the edits here (particularly the lush "Whip"), it strikes a neat balance between thick instrumental grooves and the original's simple vocal hooks. There are two versions of twinkling 80s soul groover "Love Come Down" - a smart edit from Rayko and a remix from Ruben & Ra that sounds like a breezier version of Tiger & Woods.

Review: Re-edit don Rayko still seems to be able to pull gems out of the bag at an alarming rate. Here he's done it again with a selection 'cheeky' edits, some more obvious than others. "Can't Get Enough" is made for those in love with the glistening dry ice electronics of mid-80s soul, Linn drum breaks and all. "Rock My World" is a re-work of Wacko Jacko's opinion-dividing 2001 comeback single, "Step Out Of My Dreams" is killer West End-style electro-disco and finally "Touch Me" sees Cathy Dennis' late '80s pop tune reduced to a ferociously funky guitar and cowbell workout.

Luckily, this synth-heavy selection box of house-friendly electrofunk dubs is probably one of his strongest releases of recent times. Arguably the strongest cut is "People", which is available in two versions; a tidy 7-minute Rayko 12 mix, and an extended, Tiger & Woods style builder that stretches out for 11 synth-laden minutes. Elsewhere, check the Prince-ish "Revue", sweet "Searching To Find The One" and "Heads Together", a sprightly dub of an '80s O'Jays fave.

Review: Back in March, Rayko and James Rod launched their Classics of Arrikitaun series with an EP of largely impressive re-edits on Rare Wiri. This second volume delivers more breezy, midtempo goodness for those who like their grooves sunny and synth-heavy. Predictably, Rayko's two contributions tend towards the Balearic boogie, with the drifting, delay-laden vocals, rubbery synth-bass and glistening guitars of "Betcha" just elbowing out Midnight Starr cut-up "Headlines" in the "highlight" stakes. As for Rod, he urges us to grab a glass of something cool, sweet and refreshing on the piano-laden disco shuffle of "Silver Bike", before closing his eyes and raising his arms heavenward on the sensual boogie throb of "The Name Of Love".

'Searching' itself is a midpaced groover with a nice squelchy bassline and a wistful female vocal, while 'Anyway You Wanna' reworks Cashmere's 'Do It Anyway You Wanna' from 1983. 'Can't Wait (For Your Love)' sounds like another boogie-era re-edit, though what of we're not sure - and no, it's not Nu-Shooz - and then finally there's 'Special Eyes', which keeps the early/mid 80s vibes coming and could probably tempt Max Headroom out of retirement!

Review: Madrid's disco don Rayko, is back on his own label for some pastel coloured edits on Rare Wiri Feelings Vol 1. Unbelievably he's tackled Frankie's '80s disco-sex-punk anthem "Relax" - possibly the most re-edited/bootleged '80s tune ever. However he turns it into a smoother electro-house workout, which largely works. "Dare" sees Linndrum fills compete with elastic slap bass resulting in a mid-80s Miami freestyle showdown and finally Hall & Oates' classic "Family Man" gets dubbed out in fine style.

Review: Such is the boundary-blurring nature of many of Rayko's releases, it can sometimes be trickt to ascertain whether what you're listening to is a re-edit, remix or original production. We're pretty sure that the four tracks on Super Natural are all re-edits, though they sound like Rayko's added a few new musical ingredients and reworked the drums. He begins via the early Heaven 17-with-added-electrofunk-flavour flex of 'Dinner' (very 'This Ain't No Fascist Groove Thang'), before strutting his way through a blue-eyed soul take on the early '80s Prince sound on 'Freaks Bearing Gifts'. 'Automan' adds sprightly, spacey synths sound to a formidably heavy acid bassline and relaxed electro drums, while 'Waste Your Time' is a gently tooled up take on a glassy-eyed electrofunk/80s soul workout.

Rayko/Fran Deeper - "Abracadabra" - (5:34) 118 BPM
Hotmood - "Rapture" - (5:38) 122 BPM Hot
Review: Spain's Rare Wiri serve up four disco/nu-disco cuts that aren't actually as Latin-leaning as the title may lead you to believe. Label boss Rayko and Fran Deeper join forces on a cover of The Steve Miller Band's classic 'Abracadabra' that has a few flamenco guitar flourishes at the start, sure, and the panpipes that grace Hotmood's 'Rapture' (NB: not the Blondie track) hint at South/Central American influences, but elsewhere Cuz Electric's 'Got The Feeling' is a sleazy electric disco-funker with an early 80s feel while Monsieur Von Pratt's 'Tonight' is sheer late 70s NYC exuberance. So check for this whether you're a Latin lover or not!

Review: Madrid's Rayko and James Rod go way back, with a long hearty history of collaborations. One of their key projects is the Classics Of Arrikitaun series and now we have here a fourth instalment. James is up first this time, delivery two new tunes: the light and breezy boogie of "So Easy" and the moody electro arpeggios (and Italo disco melodies) of "Hit!". Rayko starts tough we a raw and chunky vintage funk banger called "What's Your Doin" before going all synthy on the smooth 80s RnB of "Get Your Loving".

Review: 80s-inspired, disco-not-disco grooves are the order of the day on this latest salvo from Spanish don Rayko, coming as ever on his own Rare Wiri imprint. 'Battlefield' is a midpaced re-edit of Pat Benatar's 'Love Is A Battlefield' from 1983; that would suggest the other three cuts are also re-edits, but if so we couldn't tell you what of. No matter: 'Don't Stop' is a lively, boogie-styled cut that rocks a familiar "don't stop the music" male vocal snip, 'Busting' is a deceptively pacey blend of pulsating 80s synths and squalling rock guitars, while finally 'Express' adds a little tropical disco flava.

Review: It's become something of a cliche to point out Rayko's restless productivity, but it's nevertheless true that the Spanish producer does release rather a lot of material. To be fair to the Madrid man, this four-tracker for Midnight Riot is one of his stronger efforts. He begins with the life-affirming pianos and gospel vocals of "Hallelujah", before providing a sun-kissed re-dub of Fleetwood Mac's Balearic classic "Big Love" (here re-titled "Alone"). "That Sound" delivers an attractive blend of wiggly boogie synths, sharp riffs and fuzzy rock guitars, while "Get Loose" is a mostly instrumental re-recording of the Aleems' breakdance era electrofunk classic of the same name.

Review: Along with Sheffield combo Hiem, Rayko is fast becoming Nang Records' most reliable artist. It would be fair to say that his latest album, No Stopping - his fourth in total and first since 2014 - is undoubtedly his strongest yet. Blessed with some fine guest vocals from Tania Haroshka and, perhaps more impressively, Crazy P's Danielle Moore, the set features much more "live instrumentation" - most notably bass and electric guitars - than the Spaniard's previous full-lengths. This adds an extra level of musical richness to the Madrid man's synthesizer-heavy tracks, which once again flit between hard-edged nu-disco, sun-kissed Balearica, revivalist electrofunk sweetness and the kind of cosmic disco that we would once have expected to hear from Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi.

Review: There are plenty of similarities between Iberian scalpel friends Rayko and Alkalino, from their prolific nature, to the tightened up-but-still groovy nature of their ubiquitous re-edit releases. Here, Spaniard Rayko brings his brand of goodtime grooves to Portuguese Alkalino's Audaz imprint, with fittingly solid results. As usual, there's much to admire, from the string-laden, sun-soaked disco-funk bagginess of "You Like To Dance", to the deliciously dubbed-out electrofunk bounce of standout "B-Boyz". There's much to admire elsewhere, of course, with both the sinewy "Rolling" (think classic dancefloor soul business given a nu-disco makeover) and the almost overwhelmingly Balearic Italo rearrangement "Tornado" impressing.

Review: Spanish re-edit hero Rayko had a productive 2011, releasing some of the best cut-ups and disco reworks of the year. Here he begins 2011 in similar fashion, delivering four more tried and tested slabs of dancefloor funk. Opener "My Lady" does a terrific job at re-modelling a Prince-era, slap-bass heavy 80s jam, removing all but snatches of the vocal in favour of more instrumental groovery. "After The After" continues on a similar theme, going deeper into slow dance territory, while "Turn Me On Again" builds brilliantly over six delightfully sensual minutes. "This Is It", meanwhile, adds some head-nodding house flavours to a simmering 80s soul jam. Solid.

Review: Re-edit hero Rayko teams up with the little-known Dynamicron for this four-track scalpel trip into the murky world of 80s power-pop, Eurobeat and skewed Balearica. Rayko himself offers up two tracks - the soft focus Balearic pop indulgence of "Voyager" and the handbag-friendly chugging cut-up 80s pop sweetness of "Foreign Affair". Dynamicron, meanwhile, goes for a heavier sound on his two cuts, the booming bottom end throb of "JukeBox Hero" (80s powerpop goes disco-house, anyone?) and guitar solo-laden "WorkingClass Hero" (yep, an edit of a cover of Lennon's "Working Class Hero"). There's a distinct whiff of hairspray about the whole EP!

This EP could be straight out of the US club charts, circa 1986. "You're The Best" might easily be Chaka Kahn jammin' in the Danceteria, "Bored" is Miami freestyle meets Jam & Lewis with lashings of harsh string stabs for '80s overload. Rayko - "Baby" - (10:39) 115 BPM Hot
Review: Two Spanish stalwarts of the nu-disco and edits scene join forces on this two-track EP. As you'd expect from Rayko's Rare Wiri label, the emphasis is on re-edits, though there's enough additional production and contemporary trickery on display than you're average scalpel cut. Ilya Santana steps up first with "Logic", a decidedly cosmic, and trippy re-build of Japanese producer Logic System's 1981 electronic classic "Clash (Chinjyu of Sun)". Rayko, meanwhile, drops "Baby", a similarly dubbed-out and floor-friendly remake of what sounds like a forgotten Italo classic. Knowing Rayko, it could just as easily be something well known put through the mangler; either way, it's one of his strongest cuts for some time.

The Elektroboogie EP is typical of his style, delivering a mix of Balearic curiosities (the jangling, sunshine-friendly goodness of "Bring On The Night"), rubbery disco (the loopy electrofunk flavour of "Don't Make Me Waiting"), thick-set electrofunk ("What I Like"), dubby proto-house (a memorable version of Samson & Delilah's 1984 Paradise Garage classic "I Can Feel Your Love Slippin' Away") and well-known anthems (a tougher rearrangement of Joe Smooth's end of night Chicago house classic "Promised Land").

Glossy, shimmering, synth-led nu-disco with a distinctly 80s feel is the order of the day, generally, with 'Fais Pas Amour' bringing the soulful vibes and 'Telegraph' having perhaps the most instant pop appeal, while closer 'Nightloving' stands out from the pack thanks to its slightly more down n' dirty funk edge.

Review: A stylistically varied disco four-tracker here from Spanish scene stalwart Rayko, coming once again on his own Rare Wiri label. The title track is the standout, capturing that early 80s Paradise Garage vibe perfectly - think Glenn Guthrie's 'Padlock' or Whitney's 'Love Will Save The Day' - and is served up in sultry, soulful Cosmic Love Boat Re-Edit and more dubbed-out Magic Boogie Warrior Edit forms. Elsewhere, 'In Love With Love' is a more Euro-sounding affair with an Italo-ish bassline, almost folky fem vox and ear-piercing synths, while 'Need Luv' channels mid-80s boogie, but 'Your Door' is the one.

The title track here is a dark n' moody electronic chugger that marries space disco stabs to ominous guitar chords, and that'd work well for warm-up or very late play. The EP's other three cuts look to the 80s for inspiration, with echoes of Germanic coldwave and EBM ('Electro Impact'), US no-wave/disco-not-disco ('Beach Culture') and out-and-out Italo-disco ('Needing Love'). 'Suddenly' itself comes in two fairly similar-sounding mixes - Cosmic Diamond's Guitar Mix is a little hazier and druggier, while Sauco's is a bit more straight-ahead. Elsewhere, 'Flying Where You Are' is all squelch, throb and Hikari's plainitive tonsils, while the midtempo 'Death From Above' is a hypnotic, pulsating groove that leans towards the Balearic, with Hikari's vox applied here in chopped 'n' looped form.

Review: Nu-disco comes in many forms these days, and here scene stalwart Rayko brings us three tracks that are built more for home listening than dancefloor fun and frolics. Opener 'Hell O' gets the ball rolling with its glacial, Italo-esque chug, vocodered "if you were mine" vox and plangent electric guitar wails. 'Force Majeure' is a dreamy, laidback affair with a nagging bass riff augmented by atmospheric synth sweeps and insistent hi-hats, while closer 'CS-80' operates in not dissimilar territory but has a happier, more blissed-out air, dystopic sci-fi synth chords notwithstanding! An ideal soundtrack for lazy days and late-night herbal excursions.

Review: 14 years into his production career, Rayko is in better form than ever. That much is proved by 'Extraordinarylove', a fine slab of pitched-down, Italo-powered late-night pop featuring the fine vocals of Elena Hikari. Her lead vocal chimes out above a chugging, sequenced synthesiser bassline, bubbly lead lines and vintage-sounding drums (think Gaz Nevada, and you're close) on the Spanish producer's own 'Slow Version'. Manuel Costela provides the obligatory remix, upping the tempo and successfully re-framing the track as an atmospheric, squelchy and star-lit chunk of 21st century nu-disco excellence.

Label boss Rayko kicks things off, first serving up a driving, P-funk era disco-rock cut-up ("Boogie Nights"), before travelling into outer space via the cosmic disco/nu-disco/psychedelic boogie fusion of "Bamboo". James Rod opts to calm things down a bit with the taut drum breaks, twinkling pianos and crotch-stirring strings of "Groove of Midnight", a Love Unlimited Orchestra rework with tasty new synths. That the vast majority of these hit the spot is great credit to his finely honed production skills and instinctive grasp of what works on dancefloors. Here, he goes Back To The Roots of his Rare Wiri imprint, offering up brand new remixes of the cuts that appeared on the label's first release way back in 2008. First up, Phunktastike and Julian Sanza remix Ilya Santana's "Instrumental Odyssey". Sanza steals the show with a sparkling Balearic disco re-rub built around his own rubbery electric bass, chugging beats and flowery synth solos. Review: Having spent much of his career impressing with a near endless stream of re-edits, in recent times Rayko has moved further towards original production. Here, he follows up his recent album of original material on Nang with a two-track hook-up with Landerground. Both tracks blur the boundaries between original production, re-edits and bootleg remixes. "Melancholy" - seemingly a version of something obscure and vaguely Balearic - fuses throaty vocals and simmering strings with bubbling electronics, saucer-eyed keys and pulsating, Italo-influenced bottom end. The slightly tougher "Mechanical Life" opts for a similar approach, basing the action around tactile synth bass, atmospheric strings and dreamy vocal hits.

Brooding digital synth washes rule the roost with "Peyote Warrior" being all angsty electro-disco basslines, tropical pads and guitar wails, "Lucky Strike" features live-sounding bass and drums with layers melancholic electronics on top, "Juno Lover" is the sound of a stakeout under palm trees at night and "Play" the urgent and percussive soundtrack to a fictional car chase. The former enters the arena first, delivering two strong cuts - the No Wave style, leftfield boogie of "High Cloud" and the moody electro B-boy rhythms of "Ice Wind". Opening with a near-instrumental re-edit of The Passions' classic 'I'm In Love With A German Film Star' sets the tone nicely for a long-player that wears its 80s influences proudly on its sleeve, with Syndrum beats and analogue synths much in evidence throughout. And just to drive the point home, there's an 'Axel F' reversion called 'Super Suelto En Hollywood' thrown in for good measure! Here he's exploring the latter element of his work with two sparkling slabs of fresh nu-disco made in cahoots with vocalist Tania Haroshka. Title track "Rush" is particularly potent, with Rayko wrapping Haroshka's vocal around delay-laden, proto-house style drums, liquid synths and alien melodies. Virtual B-side "Undermotion" is almost as impressive, with Rayko expertly indulging his love of skewed, disco-fied 1980s cosmic rock/synth-pop fusion.

The title track is a lazy, hazy affair in which untold layers of analogue sound oscillate their way in and out of the picture. 'Autopower' is a tad funkier in feel and, with its sense of repressed energy, would make a great building track, while slightly more standard-issue Balearic/nu-disco vibes can be found on 'New Horizon'. But for some truly out-there thrills, head for 'Oopart', a guitar-led affair that comes on like Ripperton jamming with space rock diehards Ozric Tentacles.
