SAMPLE BAG VOLUME 2

Flash Back (Lego edit 4 AM) - (6:09) 119 BPM Hot
The Ghetto (Lego Retouch) - (5:06) 114 BPM
Journey To The Old Town (Lego Afro Cut) - (9:43) 116 BPM
Review: Three months after allowing DJs to rummage through the contents of his "Sample Bag", Lego Edit has decided to repeat the trick. Unzip the bag and you first find his "4am" edit of "Flash Back", a sax and flute-wielding revision of a colourful and bass-heavy funk outing underpinned by chunky house drums and tons of energetic handclaps. Reach further within the bag's velvet-lined interior and you'll come across his smooth, rolling and dancefloor take on Philadelphia Soul era classic "The Ghetto" - check the sweet jazz guitar solos, locked-in house beats and scat vocal sections - as well as the wild, loopy and insatiable heaviness of stomping Latin jazz-funk revision "Journey To The Old Town".

Desperado (feat Sunoco) - (6:36) 114 BPM
Review: Following successful collaborations with Yuksek and Channel Tres, Hamburger Records regulars Polo & Pan join forces with the mighty Red Axes. The headline attraction is title track 'Mumia', a bass-heavy bounce through mutant Afro-house territory featuring hallucinatory, echo-laden horn sounds, wonky electronic lead lines and an infectious groove. Fittingly, both artists provide personal interpretations too. Polo& Pan successfully re-imagine it as a sun-soaked, effects-laden Balearic bouncer with a jaunty-as-anything, reggae-influenced beat, more horns and sun-splashed melodies, before Red Axes take it into druggy, early morning, acid house-with-added-percussion territory. Also worth a listen is Sunoco sporting bonus cut 'Desperado', a low-slung, mid-tempo, dub disco influenced shuffler that's as positive sounding as they come.

Da Funk EP

Need You - (4:01) 118 BPM
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Alexander Chebankov AKA Sunner Soul, namely warm, woozy, tactile and picturesque cuts that combine his own production chops with elements borrowed from disco, boogie, soul and Balearic jams. 'Da Funk', his first missive of 2024, boasts four tried and tested cuts. First up is the title track, a filter-heavy slab of filter heavy disco-house which boasts nods to some of Basement Jaxx's earliest material. This is followed by the Tiger & Woods-esque boogie-house of 'Need You', a tidy (and subtly dubby) South American jazz-funk-meets-disco number ('Brazilian Rhythms') and a gorgeously dreamy slab of ambient excellence ('Deep Space').

Contra D - (6:34) 119 BPM Hot
Review: Former Naughty But Nice man Chewy Rubs teams up with another unsung hero of the UK scene, Travski, for this four-tracker on his own Bandolier label - with impeccable results. 'Jellybean' gets the ball rolling with throbbing synth-bass and rap vocal bites from LL Cool J's 'I'm Bad' and Dr Octagon AKA Kool Keith's 'Bear Witness', after which there's more party-hearty cut-up action on 'Contra D'. We then drop down into a deeper groove for 'Feel This Dub', a bassy slow-burner topped with synth-strings and indecipherable, barely-there vocal snips, and stay there for the jazzier 'Feel This', which rocks the house-eulogising diva vocal from Antoine Clamaran & D-Plac's 'Get Up'.

Change Of Mind - (6:28) 113 BPM
Review: Lately Leeds' Deelicious has seen his loose and groovy tunes grace the likes of Sound Exhibitions and Disco Fruit. Here he rolls out five sizzling new bangers. The urgent slice of socially conscious funk, "Lonely Town Lonely Street", kicks things off, "Trust Me" incorporates housier filtered loops into the mix and the title track is celebratory slice of disco-pop with some ace bloc-rocking breaks and punk-funk bass work. Elsewhere we enter orbit with the melodramatic sci-fi boogie of "Mechanical Body" and "Change Your Mind" is an amazing example of early underground dance music reconfigured by a 21st century perspective.

Eddie C - "Big City Freak" - (6:23) 115 BPM
Review: The first four volumes in the Hot'n'Spicy series came from label head HOLDTight, AKA Fabrice Pinori, a Paris-based producer and re-editor specialising in "psychedelic and Balearic disco," but on this V/A outing he shares the helm with some fellow hardcore vinyl botherers. Whether these are original productions or re-edits is hard to say but Eddie C's 'Big City Freak' is a low-slung disco/funk workout, Paul Older's '7 Days & 7 Nights' is a more uptempo disco romp, HOLDTight's own 'Afrodisiaa' is an Afro-infused funk jam with squelch by the bucketload and finally Bill Brewster's 'Love Easy' drops down into hazy, druggy ALFOS-ish territory.

Review: Following a trio of largely overlooked but very good EPs, Third Attempt (real name Torje Fagertun Spilde) drops an album built around the best of those quietly scintillating sets. Bookended by picturesque, ambient style interludes, Momentary Bliss works as a showcase for the Tromso-based producer's distinctive trademark sound - a loose, languid and sun-warm blend of jazz-funk instrumentation, infectious breakbeats, warming basslines, scratched-in hip-hop samples and Aim style downtempo instrumentation. It's the kind of toasty and entertaining set best suited for wavy front room dancing and blunted sessions on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon. It feels like an echo of another time, but that's no bad thing.

Nigerian Affair - (6:53) 112 BPM
Honey (Skit) - (1:26) 116 BPM
Pajama Stomp - (6:31) 118 BPM
Review: Since the Disco Volante EP first appeared on wax a couple of years back, COEO has gone on to release a trio of sought-after EPs on Toy Tonics. Despite its' vintage, the five-tracker remains one of the Munich duo's strongest releases and sees them blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes. Check first the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", before whacking on the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German pair's horn-heavy source material.

Take My Time EP
62
Gonna Take My Time - (5:56) 119 BPM
Review: Razor 'N' Tape Reserve's latest release is a label debut from Nenor, an Israeli producer previously best known for being one half of Mahogani Music-signed duo Rabo & Snob. He begins by offering up two cuts featuring vocalist Jenny Penkin: the attractive nu-disco/deep house fusion of 'How Can I Be Free' and the giddy nostalgic rush of revivalist number 'Do You Remember', which joins the dots between rushing piano house and late '80s Larry Heard productions. Red Axes provide a fantastic rework of the latter cut, retaining some of the dreamier and more life-affirming elements while also giving it their usual chunky grooves and psychedelic tinge. Elsewhere, 'Gonna Take My Time' is a locked-in late night delight full of sharp stabs, and 'Work That' is a restless, energy-packed late-night delight.

DJ Laurel - "Galaxy" - (5:06) 119 BPM Hot
Hawwis - "Camina" - (5:34) 115 BPM
Review: 62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: Katakana Edits first compilation, 2017's "Crate Diggin", was an epic collection of high-grade re-edits, mash-ups and reworks packed to the rafters with tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. This belated follow-up is even more epic, with the popular label squeezing in no less than 50 tracks that variously touch on riotous disco-funk, dub disco, new wave, disco-rock, deep funk, Afro-boogie, swamp funk, Latin beats, boogie, pitched-down chuggers, boogaloo, hip-hop and everything in between. You'd expect that standard to be high - it is a "best of" collection after all - and it is. If you need an instant armoury of scintillating club cuts, look no further.

Let Woman Be A Woman - (4:22) 110 BPM Hot
Red Hot - (5:44) 110 BPM
Review: Volume 127 in the 'Katakana Edits' series finds regular contributor DJ Laurel back in the producer's chair once more. He opens his latest missive with a reworking of Dyke & The Blazers' 1969 funk/soul jam 'Let A Woman Be A Woman', and signs off with his take on 'Red Hot', a track culled from the disco-vibed 1979 debut solo album by former Supreme Mary Wilson. In-between you'll find 'Shout It Out', a rousing little number whose origins are unknown, but that's got a distinctly 'Schoolhouse Rock' kinda vibe about it. Good stuff all round, but 'Red Hot' takes the gold for this reviewer.

Ms Fine Brown - (5:32) 110 BPM Hot
Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.

Bomb Strikes: Highlights 2023

The Niceguys, Bobby Saint & Prop Dylan - "Strip It" - (3:12) 110 BPM
Boca 45 - "45s" (feat Emskee & DJ Woody - DJ Moneyshot remix) - (3:17) 115 BPM
Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Review: Although Alkalino has re-edited all sorts of music over the years, disco, boogie and Italo-disco tracks have always been his bread and butter. He's taken a different path on his latest release, offering up 'Transgenre Edits' that touch on a wide variety of sounds and styles. There's much to admire throughout, from the 105 BPM conscious soul-goes-dancing headiness of 'Songs That I See' and the weirdo disco-rock-goes-Italo-disco throb of 'Angry Eyes' (a take on a legendary 1979 by Skatt Bros) to the effervescent jazziness of 'Sad Sax' (an edit of the track sampled by Mr Scruff on 'Get a Move On'), the muscular, mind-mangling synth-disco throb of 'Angel Dust' and the bouncy Tango-disco rush of 'Funana'.

Love Is Sweet - (6:14) 114 BPM
Review: Known first and foremost as a deep house producer, the UK's Pete Le Freq takes a tour of more disco-oriented pastures on this three-tracker for Rayko's Rare Wiri label. The tracks are essentially re-edits, but there's no five-minute 'loop it up and chuck a 4/4 kick under it' shoddiness here, and you could equally see them as being fresh tracks that are merely 'inspired by' vintage cuts. 'Believe In You' is based on Patti Jo's 'Make Me Believe In You' from 1973, N-Joi's 1991 rave classic 'Anthem' (1991) gets disco'd up on 'Anthemic' and 'Love Is Sweet' sees Anita Baker's 1986 soul gem 'Sweet Love' given a nu-disco makeover.

Review: Following on from their successful hook up with 2020 Vision, nu-disco heroes Crazy P have now joined forces with the Classic label (how has this not happened before?!) and here we get the "Truelight EP". Spacey retro soul balladry gives way to filthy cosmic funk on "One True Light" and "In My Hands" is nasty Padlock EP-style disco of the highest order. Hot Toddy (aka Chris Todd of Crazy P) remixes the latter into hypnotic acid and band co-founder Ron Basejam turns the former into chugging, sun-warped Balearic boogie.

Thankful - (5:03) 115 BPM
Review: Some killer collaborative action here, as sometime Saint Wax and Masterworks Music man Gledd (real name Edoardo Barbi) joins forces with prolific producer The Funk District (AKA Mexican scene stalwart Fernando Mendoza) for the very first time. The pair serve up three top-notch cuts that combine extensive samples from gospel soul and gospel disco outings with their own chunky drums and instrumental flourishes: excitable, occasionally loopy disco-house slammer 'The Rabbit', the more lolloping, piano-heavy bounce of 'Thankful' and the hard bass, percussive hustle, insatiable riffs and righteous, preacher-man vocals of 'New Rising'. Art of Tones remixes the latter cut, turning it into a classy-sounding slab of disco-house/gospel house fusion that arguably makes greater use of both the sampled lead vocal and the pair's funky instrumentation.

This guy just wants to have a good time, and here on V-Shaped, a compilation of some of his best remixes, he provides 12 demonstrations of this philosophy. Highlights include his deliciously dreamy synth-disco rework of Kraak & Smaak's "How We Gonna Stop The Time", the accelerated swing/jazz minimal house of the "Dark Jazz Dub" by Nekta and his tough electro-funk remix of "Disco Life" by Basement Freaks. Mellow Cat - "Accelerate" (feat Kathy Diamond - Pete Herbert instrumental) - (5:55) 115 BPM
Review: In which UK scene stalwart Pete Herbert remixes five tracks by other people and one of his own, to predictably fine effect. The EP opens with the understated synth-y throb of 'Pourquoi', before 'Back To Bahia' takes us down a slightly housier path. 'Orange Chika' then takes a left turn into classic Balearic territory - complete, from the two minute mark, with uplifting piano riff - before the remaining three tracks play us out on a more straight-up disco tip. It's all superbly executed - as you'd expect from Herbert - but leading the charge for me is the big, bad funker that is 'Revnorev'.

Africa (My No. 1) (Captain Planet Marimba Vibes remix) - (6:03) 118 BPM
Review: Label newcomer Canopy Records, compiled and conceptualised by label head Sumosui, sends out some super Afro transmission for this first release. 'Africa No 1' is a single that features a superb tune from Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria, which was first put out locally in 1987. It is by the late great Nigerian reggae artist Ehi Duncan and his The Africa Army Express band and next to the uplifting original are two new mixes from Captain Planet. He brings the tune into the modern day with some tight key, horn and synth sounds for the first mix, and the second is a slower, more mid-tempo bit of afro disco. Lovely vibes.

Review: Parisian producer Simon Says has been doing his thing for nigh on two decades now, most recently via Dialect Recordings. Few of his previous releases, though, are quite as saucy and arresting as "Feel Me" - a killer dub-disco re-imagining of a lesser-known 1982 Blancmange album track rich in bubbling synthesizers, fuzzy bass guitar, whispered vocals and spacey synthesizer melodies. For those looking for a dose of extended pleasure, Bill Brewster's chugging re-edit - an eight-minute scalpel rearrangement of Simon Says' original - should scratch that itch. Elsewhere, fellow French producer Yuksek pushes up the tempo and gives the track a little more pulsating nu-disco flavour on two tasty revisions, while Eskimo regulars NTEIBINT cannily emphasizes Simon Says' flash-fried funk-rock guitars.

Review: Italy's Full Time/Goody Music label family has been around since the 70s and released a huge range of music, from Italo disco and Europop to house and garage. Since 2020, they've been putting out this series of compilations, which gathers together the cream of their remix output: sometimes new mixes of old tracks, sometimes remixes culled from the original releases, and with different eras and styles all jumbled together. It's a scattergun approach that makes for some unlikely bedfellows: on Vol 5 you'll find 80s boogie from Michael Baker and Jimmy Ross and first-gen electro from International Music System rubbing shoulders with 90s chart cheese from Alex Party and smooth garage from Joe Smooth. Not every track will suit every listener, but there's enough buried treasure here to make the digging worthwhile.

Rescue Sybil - (7:13) 118 BPM
Review: For the first time since he shared an epic album's worth of 'lockdown edits' in December 2021, Pete Le Freq is back on Alpaca Edits with another red-hot selection of club-ready disco and boogie reworks. He first offers a smoothed-out, mixing-friendly take on a boogie-bass propelled disco number full of simmering strings and twinkling pianos ('Afraid To Freq'), before tweaking a more driving, electric piano-sporting disco number ('Infinity Now'). Those looking for a big dose of dancefloor energy should check the disco-funkin' excellence of 'Close To You', while 'Rescue Sybil' is a tastefully executed revision of a Sybil Thomas boogie classic with freshly metronomic drums.

It's fitting, then, that the imprint's first missive of their 10th anniversary year comes from Le Freq. It's a joyous and celebratory affair all told, particularly opener 'All My Laxative', a cheery, string-laden and horn-toting rearrangement of a dewy-eyed disco-soul treat. Of course, there's plenty to set the pulse racing across the rest of the EP. Check first 'Mi Sabrina', a rolling house style re-edit of a jazz-funk-tinged Latin dancefloor gem, before turning your attention to the low-slung, delay-laden disco bump of 'Mysteries of Cissy', and the warming, loved-up disco warmth of 'The Sweetest Way'.

Show U My Love - (6:33) 119 BPM Hot
Review: You wait ages for a Pete Le Freq edits EP, and two come along at once! This four-tracker from the popular disco-house fusionist appears two weeks after his return to the label (via 'The Gok Wan Back Up Plan') for the first time in two years. He begins by gentling dubbing out, housing up and expertly rearranging a Goldie Alexander classic ('Show U My Love'), before joining the dots between the Bucketheads' 'The Bomb' and thedisco classic it sampled ('Street Player') on the bass-heavy 'Chicago Player'. Elsewhere, 'That Gospel Track' sees Pete Le Freq make merry with aquatic disco bass, heady horns and soaring gospel vocals, while 'Keep On Dancin' is a high-grade disco dance-along straight from the top drawer.

Review: Southampton's Evil Smarty has been collaborating with the likes of Bad Barbie recently, but here he's doing his own thing. He's been busy too, chopping up five choice cuts, highlights being the mantra-like 80s funk loops of "The One", the rough and raunchy disco pumper "Hotel" and the Gino Soccio-borrowing sultry grind of "Dancer".

Beneath The Neon - (4:38) 118 BPM
Review: Flamingo Pier, the disco-boogie sensation from New Zealand, takes a transatlantic journey with their latest Beneath the Neon EP for Razor-N-Tape. Recognised for their electrifying parties in East London and their hometown festival appearances - this Kiwi collective serves up three fresh tracks that both reinforce and broaden their trademark danceable indie-soul & groove. The lead single, "How 2 Feel" delves into the club realm with a pulsating house rhythm paired by angular synth stabs, horn lines, and infectious vocal chants. "Beneath the Neon" and "Remedy" stay true to Flamingo Pier's signature disco-dance style, featuring more vocal hooks, funky guitar riffs to boot, and some mighty fine Luke Walker production. To top it off, the EP includes remixes by Chicago house legend Glenn Underground and RNT co-head JKriv, who welcomes in some extra Afro-boogie royalty in Steve Monite for a guest appearance. Drenched in sun-soaked vibes, Beneath the Neon is the ideal soundtrack for basking in the dog days of a summer afternoon.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from each new album in Joey Negro's "Remixed With Love" series, namely fantastic new revisions of classic disco, boogie, soul, electro and jazz-funk classics created using the original multi-track tapes. This third volume naturally contains a few inspired revisions of well-known cuts - a riotous take on The Fatback Band's "Do The Bus Stop", an astonishing, dubbed-out version of the Temptations' "Law of the Land" and a soaring, life-affirming rearrangement of Patrice Rushen's "Never Give You Up" included - but also some suitably smart tweaks of lesser-known gems. These include a sublime revision of the APX's '80s gem "Loose Yourself To The Groove" and an insatiable take on Mass Production's "Shante" full of jammed-out electric piano solos and rubbery electric bass.

Review: Given his credentials and track record, it's unsurprising that original disco and boogie artists are willing to let Joey Negro play around with their biggest hits. His first stab at this kind of multi-track remix, 2014's Remixed With Love, was such a success that he's decided to unleash another swathe of revisions over two vinyl double-packs. This edition features some killer reworks, including a sublime, on-point rearrangement of Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a rolling, dubbed-out version of Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper" that rivals Larry Levan's classic remix. The veteran producer also successfully turns Pockets' "Come Go With Me" into a classic soulful house rub, and pushes Thelma Houston's "I'm Here Again" further towards disco anthem territory.

SO|KA - "Grease" - (6:14) 115 BPM Hot
DJ Laurel - "Lost In The Crowd" - (5:14) 111 BPM
Review: Volume 66 of the Katakana Edits is nothing but vibes from start to finish, and surely exactly what we need in the blazing summer months - edits, edits, and nothing but more edits! SO|KA's opening "Grease" is a dubby, weighty house chugger that blends effortlessly with juat about any form of dance tune, while DJ Laurel's "Lost In The Crowd" is a disco charmer that leads with horns and is backed by pumping beats, leaving the final "All Or Nothing" to provide the seductive charms thanks to a gentle r&b charm. Beautiful stuff.
