Review: While not one of Sylvester's better-known club hits, 1978 jam "Dance (Disco Heat)" is every bit as essential as "I Need You", "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Over & Over". Here, Masters at Work man Louie Vega offers up his takes on the disco classic, which sits somewhere between the traditional NYC sound and the muscular, arpeggio-heavy electronic style of disco made famous by Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley. Vega's 12-minute A-side "Re-touch" strips out many of the electronic touches, instead focusing on delivering celebratory, peak-time disco abandon. On the flipside you'll find two tasty DJ tools: a loopy, slightly more house-centric dub (which also includes a lengthy filtered section to allow for longer mixes) and a short instrumental mix.

Review: For the latest volume in their popular Disco Funkin' compilation strand, Bomb Strikes has handed over curation duties to rising star and Midnight Riot regular Natasha Kitty Katt. The Edinburgh DJ/producer's selections are undeniably addictive and on-point, moving between heavyweight re-edits (see her collaboration with Twisted Soul Collective, 'Twisted Katt', solo disco-funk tweak 'Edgarr!' and Oliver Boogie's slamming 'Dance Band'), superior nu-disco originals (Phoenix's piano-heavy 'Nature Dance', Fouk's sample-heavy 'Cat Lady' and the slick boogie revivalism of Lovebirds' 'Give Me a Sign') and loopy disco-house treats (the contributions from Shaka Loves You, Birdee, Hotmood and Mark Lower). Those looking for fresh dancefloor ammunition will find much to enjoy, while the Scottish DJ's accompanying mix is as entertaining and excitable as they come.

Review: What could be more fun than a hot-to-trot combo of driving disco bass, psychedelic acid lines and haunting, Sylvester style vocals? That's the winning formula behind Chicago star Honey Dijon's new collaboration with Aussie vocalist Sam Sparro. This killer combo is brilliantly executed on both the original mix and longer "Disco Version", which sounds to us like a summer anthem in waiting. The track's nagging TB-303 acid lines are pushed to the fore on the wilder Cosmic Energy Dub, while Cratebug's "Nova Remix" is a predictably dusty slab of deep house/disco fusion.

Review: Sweat It Out! bring us the deluxe edition of Purple Disco Machine's 2021 long-player 'Exotica', which now packs three bonus cuts. Starting with the latter, 'Twisted Mind' is a lively, uptempo slice of disco-pop, 'Rise' (featuring Tasita D'Mour) rocks a more club-friendly soulful/disco house vibe, while Sophie & The Giants collab finds us back in daytime Kiss FM territory. As for the album proper, it's fair to say that 'Exotica' finds the German stalwart making his bid for mainstream stardom - much of what's here is much closer to contemporary pop than it is to 70s disco or 90s disco-house. But then you knew that already.

Review: Montenegran re-edit maestro Sasha Mitich, better known to the music-buying public as Mitiko, serves up seven more reworks of classic cuts from days gone by, kicking off with Sister Sledge's 'All American Girls' from 1981. Next to get the treatment is Brass Construction's 'Changin' (1975), followed by - among others - Rare Function's 'Disco Function' (1976), Johnnie Taylor's 'Disco Lady' (1976) and Sylvester's 'Dance (Disco Heat)' (1978). That leaves just two tracks whose source had our disco detectives scratching their heads - including the infuriatingly familiar 'Funky People' - but you get the general idea!

Review: Shockingly, it's been five years since Will Holland's last solo outing under his most familiar alias, Quantic. Now based in New York, he'll soon release what Tru Thoughts says is his "most cohesive and intricate album to date". First, though, we get this top-notch taster single. In its original form, "Atlantic Oscillations" is a killer chunk of disco fusion, with Holland wrapping cut-glass strings, bouncy pianos and tropical funk guitars around a driving, dub disco influenced groove. Fittingly, Holland has also provided a "Disco Dub" where delay-laden instrument snippets drift across the sound space while his bass-heavy groove merrily thrusts forwards towards peak-time dancefloors. The EP also boasts a killer remix from the Maghreban, who giddily loops up Holland's piano riff and bassline atop an early Chicago house style beat.

Review: On his latest expansive collection of tastefully tooled-up scalpel cuts, construction toy enthusiast Lego Edit has turned his attention to the world of Rare Groove. The results are naturally on-point, from the lolloping loops, head-nodding grooves and echoing Curtis Mayfield style vocals of "Supa People", to the densely percussive disco mysticism of "Mondo Tibet", where Indian style strings and earthy vocal grunts rise above some suitably heavy drums. In between you'll encounter such highlights as the hypnotic, filter-heavy disco-house pump of "Funk Family", the sizzling Brazilian carnival celebration that is "A2" and the classic disco bounce of certified peak-time stomper "Love In (Lego Edit Disco Cut)".

Review: Israeli and Berlin-based DJ/producer Dasco has put out a fair number of singles over the last few years, but none are anywhere near as good as "African Power", their first outing on Local Talk. The title track is superb: a wonderfully jaunty, atmospheric, evocative and positive fusion of Afro-house, jazz, deep house and calypso that boasts layered percussion, a brilliant bassline and some lusciously lilting trumpet solos. "Keep Moving", meanwhile, is a heavily percussive deep house workout full of spacey synths and heavy South American drums. Trinidadian Deep does a fine job making "African Power" deeper, dreamier and even more melodic, while Anthony Nicholson joins the dots between Latin house and deep nu-disco on a suitably Balearic revision of "Keep Moving".

Review: Following the release of Part 15 during the summer, Innervisions drop the latest secret weapons that feature in Dixon and Ame's sets. With a focus on vocals and woozy melodies, this collection captures the energy of the Innervisions owners' DJing. A case in point is the flowing groove and haunting tones of Ivory & Filippo Nardini's "Could You Feel The Love" or Hardt Antoine's woozy, acid-frazzled and appropriately named "Inside Your Mind". On other occasions, the collection veers close to pop territory, audible on the electronic groove of Cipy's "Trip" or flirts with 80s synth pop and electronic disco on Samantha Loveridge's "The Pusher". But no matter the direction, like all previous selections, Secret Weapons 16 makes for essential listening.

Horse Meat Disco, the long running Sunday night of cowbell carnage in deep South London, return to the Strut imprint with a superlative follow up to last years critically acclaimed compilation and DJ mix.
Since then, residents James Hillard, Jim Stanton, Severino and Filthy Luka have continued to lead the way with their packed residencies throughout Europe and appearances at festivals across the globe. Horse Meat Disco Volume 2 sees the quintent drop another selection of late 70s and early 80s obscure italo, Loft club classics and lesser known boogie peculiarities presented here in digital format as separate tracks for the discerning digital disco DJs. Lenore O'Malley's 1980 track 'First To Be A Woman' is every bit as much a disco divva classic as 'I Will Survive' (Gloria Gaynor later covered this O'Malley track) Further sultry diva action comes from Madleen Kane's 'Cherchez Pas' a real dancefloor burner with the Swedish model turned singer teaching Alison Goldfrapp how to ride horn stabs, handclaps and octave bass lines with aplomb. Fans of epic extended dubbed out grooves will be all over the MiX-X-X-tend Version of Scherrie Payne's 'Girl, You're In Love / I'm Not In Love' which clocks in at nearly 10 minutes and is little more than simple percussion with various vocals, hooks and melodies expertly brought in and out of the mix. Bravo's 'Touch Me' bridges the gap between odd italo and searing disco boogie and shares billing of album highlight with 'Hot To Trot', a consumate Hi NRG burner from Lourett Russell Grant which is reminiscent of In Flagranti at their filthiest.

Review: Most active from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, Patrice Rushen's discography has spanned jazz, R&B, jazz-funk, soul and pop, but it's the jazz-funk/disco fusions she delivered for Elektra Recordings in the late 70s/early 80s that remain her best-loved work. Here, 15 tracks from that period are gathered together, with favourites like the evergreen 'Forget Me Nots' and 'Haven't You Heard' (reworked in the late 90s by Daddy's Favourite) snuggling up alongside less over-played but equally high-quality cuts like the jazz-funk piano groove that is 'Number One' and the ultra-smooth boogie of 'Feels So Real'. Smoochers like 'Where There Is Love' perhaps sound a little less relevant in 2019, but this is still a very classy collection indeed.

Review: If young Belfast producer Space Dimension Controller aka Jack Hamill is yet to wander across your musical radar it's likely you will be paying attention after listening to Journey To The Core Of The Unknown Sphere. Vintage Warp sounds collide harmoniously with g-funk vibes and early 90s Detroit melodies on music Hamill refers to as "Galactic Funk". The many elements of opening track "Journey" are so bewitching it requires several repeat listens to fully appreciate the richness. "Cosmo30 Travel Duration" combines gargling elastic bass with soft Detroit kicks which are slowly digested by Hamill's increasingly wigged out synth melodies. SDC is currently working on tracks with Kyle Hall, and ahead of that the Detroit wunderkind remixes "Journey" into a fuzzy discotheque groover which sounds nothing like any of his other remixes. The slo mo future boogie of "BD Alignment" and journey into ethereal chord expression on "Fluorescent Trails" make this an astounding EP.

Review: Ten years ago, Eskimo Recordings emerged from Ghent, as an outlet for mix albums from hometown heroes the Glimmers. Since then, the label has gone on to be a leading light on the nu-disco and nu Balearic scenes. Fittingly, this expansive tenth anniversary set was put together by the Glimmers, and features two solo DJ mixes featuring label highlights aplenty. For DJs, the real bonus is the huge selection of unmixed tracks on display, which adeptly showcases the depth and variety of the label's output. Highlights are plentiful, from the woozy Scandolearic vibes of Lindstrom & Prins Thomas and brilliance of early Aeroplane, to the sun-bright dream pop of Hiem, and the bouncing dancefloor groovery of LHAS Inc.
