Review: Hot Gorilla Records, self-styled purveyors of "disco for funky monkeys", has enjoyed a very successful 2023 - as this timely round-up of the imprint's finest moments of the year emphatically proves. Check first the summery, party-starting disco-goes-house joy of Dexter Jones' 'Space Sister', before admiring the horn-heavy, edit-not-edit excellence of Andy Buchan's 'Shake What You Got' and the Brenda Taylor-sampling boogie-meets-nu-disco fusion of 'Lovers Boogie' by Solazz. Highlights elsewhere across the compilation include the 21st century disco-funk of Harlem Dance Club's 'Shake a Hand', the eyes-closed peak-time rush of Fray Bentos' 'No Lies', and the rolling, effects-laden hedonism of 'Feels So Good' by Pete Whitely.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a hot and sticky, two-track collaboration between 10-piece Parisian disco-funk outfit Cotonete and disco-house survivor Dimitri From Paris. "Parribean Disco", a Latin-tinged take on Caribbean disco rich in expansive jazz piano solos (think "Strings of Life", and you're close), pressure-building grooves and rousing horn lines, is undoubtedly the star of the show, though the high octane and fiendishly heavy disco-funk slammer that follows, "The Hustle Parisian" - all "Spank" electric piano stabs, mazy synth solos and layered trumpet riffs - arguably boasts more dancefloor weight. Both are superb, though, and sound like peak-time anthems in waiting.

Review: Now aged 82 and still recording, Ebo Taylor is a true giant of the Ghanaian music scene whose career goes all the way back to the 1950s. Along the way he's worked with Fela Kuti and been widely sampled by hip-hop producers, and here Mr Bongo bring us four new mixes of three cuts from his 'Yen Ara' album, which was released earlier this year. Ron Trent's take on 'Krumandey' and Nick The Record's rub of 'Mumudey Mumudey' will go down well on house floors, while the Nature Flako remix of the latter and the Black Fan mix of 'Mind Your Own Business' are more geared towards specialist Afro jocks.

Review: Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart is a veteran producer who began in the 90s releasing cult deep house records. Since then he has explored all things groovy and now he's back under a new presidential moniker. He's recruited his old pal Sabba MG for these new jams too, with his sweet and soulful falsettos being the icing on the skippy garage cake of "Going To A Go Go". Meanwhile "Night Time" is a classy homage to the warm grooves of 80s funk. The former also appears as a sparse and heady "Deep Mix" and the latter gets a dubbed out treated too.

Laville's moody vocal turn kicks the record off in style on Austin Ato's 'Control', while Waajeed works his broken beat magic on 'What You Know'. Elsewhere Detroit Swindle bring a tougher slant on soul-rooted house music to the table, while PBR Streetgang aim straight for your pleasure centre with the soaring 'Madame Z'. Review: Favorite Recordings has pulled out all the stops on this tasty E.P, which features big name remixes of tracks from Patchworks man Bruno Hovart's Afro-disco side project, Violaa. The headline attractions are undoubtedly Dimitri From Paris's two reworks of "On Te L'Avait Dit". The Parisian disco maestro delivers a fiendishly percussive, horn-heavy Super Disco Blend - complete with original vocal - before working the drums and delays further on a fine accompanying Super Disco Dub. Golf Channel regulars Africaine 808 provide the other remix, laying down a delightfully loose, organic and percussive interpretation of former single "Spies Are Watching Me". Smartly, they push some of the previously unheard instrumentation to the fore early on, before unleashing Violaa's original horns and vocals.

Review: London-based Detoiter Demi Riquisimo has been responsible for some high-quality music over the last 18 months, most notably a superb two-tracker on Homage and an electro-focused outing on 10 Questions. Divine Reality, the producer's Lost Palms label debut, is equally as striking. Riquisimo sets the tone with the sci-fi seeped title track, where classic Kraftwerk synths, psychedelic acid motifs and shimmering Motor City electronics rise above a crunchy drum machine beat, before exploring disco-fuelled loop jam territory on the unfeasibly funky 'Local Chain'. Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Green Machine', a joyously camp and driving chunk of late-night Italo-disco rich in mid-'80s synth riffs, intergalactic chords and thrusting electronic bass.

Review: Natural Rhythm are Thomas White and Pete Williams and their tracks have been secret weapons in Robsoul boss Phil Weeks' DJ sets for over a decade. On Tribute, he reissues some of his personal favourites. Said to be born in a garage in Los Angeles in the late '90's, you can hear that Natural Rhythm was a meeting of passionate musical minds who created their own style, with releases on local imprints such as Seasons Recordings, Earthtones and their own eponymous imprint. "Something Big" starts out with with their signature funky disco loops in full effect; they're really at home on Robsoul! "Chicago Nights" is an edit of a certain Billy Ocean classic that we can never get enough of, while "Energized" rocks that really deep and funky bass over smooth Rhodes and tribal drums sampled from a certain Submission track.

Review: Next up from Me Me Me, Man Power touches down for three tidy overhauls as part of the second 'Genius Steals' drop, giving us three feisty breaks-driven designs. We open up with Man Power's Hans Zimmerframe Re-Fuck of 'Tom's Duh Duh DNA', a floating drift through classic vocal samples and warm chord progressions, of course lathered with stunning drum processing. Following this, we get a moog-driven rework of 'Invisible Man', again repurposing classic vocal patterns for quite the abstract finish. Finally, we bite into the Breakfast Club Sandwich edit of 'Snctfy Yrslf', another creation dripping in chord-driven nostalgia, utilising 80's style guitar riffs and synth lines for one final throwdown. Awesome work.
