Slow Not LowEXCLUSIVE
Weaper's Choice - "Leaving You" (V's edit) - (5:30) 88 BPM
Review: This impressively expansive collection from experienced remixer Valique showcases some of the best downtempo and Balearic edits from his popular V's Edits series. There's certainly plenty to get the blood pumping and the juices flowing throughout, from a chugging, ten-minute take on Pink Floyd ('Brickwall') and a pleasingly squelchy take on Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams' 'Lose Yourself To Dance' (here renamed 'Lose Your Elf'), to a chunky dub-house re-imagining of Jimmy Cliff classic 'The Harder They Come' and a loopy, hypnotic, mid-tempo disco-rock revision of T-Rex ('Jewelry'). Throw in party-hearty takes on cuts from Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys (an odd but impactful reimagining of 'Good Vibrations') and you have a great value compilation.

Autumn EP

Introfall (Autumn) - (1:23) 80 BPM
Review: Scruscru's Scruniversal take a left turn into jazzier pastures than normal with this four-track EP from I Gemin, AKA Russian producer Mike Popov. The EP opens with the languid, cinematic instrumental 'Introfall (Autumn)', before moving into out-and-out jazz territory with the flute-laden 'Ninjazz Bit'. Funk and soul flavas then inform 'Dry My Tears' with its wukka-wukking geetars and (presumably sampled) gospel-like vocal, before '2Gether We Funk' plays us out in more "traditional" funk mode, with brass fanfares galore and a distinct car chase feel. Musically speaking 'Ninjazz Bit' is arguably the most impressive, polished piece here but it's '2Gether We Funk' that'll get those booties shakin'!

Loved - (4:03) 82 BPM
Skater - (4:15) 80 BPM
Review: Kieran Hebden, better known by his moniker Four Tet, has graced us with his first full-length album in nearly three years. "Three," released on his own Text Records imprint, is a meticulously crafted exploration of sound, weaving together elements of electronica, downtempo, and folktronica influences. The album strikes a balance between organic and electronic textures. Tracks like "Loved" showcase Hebden's signature ability to manipulate found sounds and samples, creating a shimmering sonic tapestry. "Gliding Through Everything" leans more towards the downtempo side, with its gentle piano chords and woozy atmosphere. However, Four Tet doesn't shy away from exploring the electronic realm. Tracks like "Daydream Repeat" feature driving uptempo rhythms intertwined with ethereal piano melodies, showcasing his talent for building tension and release. "Storm Crystals" injects a dose of ambient energy, while "Skater" leans into playful, almost chiptune-like melodies. The closing track, "Three Drums" (another pre-release single), brings back the energy with its pulsating bassline and infectious groove. Not to miss!

Fat Freddy's Drop, Dub Pistols & Freestylers - "Bones" (dub Pistols & Freestylers remix) - (5:40) 88 BPM
Review: A decade on from the release of 'Blackbird', the third studio album by beloved New Zealand combo Fat Freddy's Drop, the album returns in freshly remixed form. It's a naturally celebratory affair that touches on most of their stylistic influences and more, from reggae/soul/hip-hop fusion (the fine Kings rub of 'Blackbird', Christophe El Torento and Lucky Lance reworking 'Clean The House'), sub-heavy house warmth (Nightmares on Wax's club-ready take on 'Russia'), dub disco (Kiwi deep house star Philippa tweaking 'Bones'), soaring house-not-house (Jazzanova's emotion-rich interpretation of 'Soldier'), digi-dub (Marcus Worgull's version of 'Blackbird'), wobbly jump-up D&B (Freestykes and Dub Pistols re-imagining 'Bones') and bowel-bothering bass music (Syrup D's fantastic mix of 'Silver & Gold').

Chaz Jankel & Bill Brewster - "Manon Manon" - (4:56) 89 BPM
Review: The concept behind Bill Brewster's latest 'After Dark' compilation - his first for eight years fact fans - is "low and slow", with the author, DJ and record collector utilising this loose but logical theme to deliver an undeniably eclectic selection of high-grade cuts. The quality threshold remains high from start to finish, as Brewster variously serves up twinkling, jazz-flecked electronica (T.O.E), synth-laden proto-Balearic dreaminess (Island Band), Weatherall-esque dark disco psychedelia (Brewster's Hotel Motel project remixing Jeb Loy Nichols), squelchy nu-disco deepness (Ray Mang dubbing out Khruangbin), acid-flecked revivalist proto-house (Rhythm Plate), little-known, 80s soul era synth-pop (Debbie & The Code), future Balearic anthems (Naill re-editing Gilbert O'Sullivan), saucer-eyed, piano-sporting space house (Gus Patterson) and ultra-deep electro (Carl Finlow).

The Eyes Of The Father (Prequel Tapes remix) - (7:30) 89 BPM
Review: Hercules & Love Affair, renowned for their critically acclaimed album 'In Amber,' have delved into a new sonic realm with the release of "Mixed In Amber." This remix compilation not only showcases the versatility of their original work but also introduces a captivating array of artists who contribute their unique perspectives to the project. "Mixed In Amber" presents a dynamic reinterpretation of these compositions, breathing new life into the already compelling tracks. The remixes, carefully curated by Andy Butler, feature a lineup of respected artists whose work he admires and supports regularly. Among the already released remixes are contributions from Paramida, Kris Baha, Seth Troxler, Giant Swan, Justin K Broadrick, Jonny Rock, and Pangaea. Each remix adds a distinctive touch to the original compositions. Whether it's the intensified "roar" in "Contempt for You," the haunting groan of "Poisonous Storytelling," or the buzzing chug of "Christian Prayers," the remixes showcase the multifaceted nature of Hercules & Love Affair's sound.

Review: Some producers turn out new albums like the rest of us brush our teeth. Others prefer a 'quality over quantity' approach - and that's certainly true in the case of Paul Murphy AKA Mudd, who here delivers what's only his second-ever solo album, and his first since 2006's 'Claremont 56' (though to be fair there have been a clutch of collaborative efforts along the way). It was worth the wait, though: that's given him 18 years to perfect his distinctive but hard-to-classify midtempo style, and 'In The Garden...' is indeed as close to perfection as you're likely to get. Blending elements of jazz-funk, disco, lounge and Balearica, it's perhaps best summed up as a contemporary update of the jazz-fusion sound of the late 70s/early 80s, but our advice would be to not worry too much about labels, and instead just press 'play', lay back and enjoy! Very classy stuff indeed.

Last Call - (3:37) 80 BPM
Review: Although it might still be too soon to call Texan producer DJ Poolboi a legend, his music is certainly starting to lean the way of legendary, with lo-fi house the artist's trademark. It's the boi's third album in four years across three labels and first on Shall Not Fade in which he's become something of a figure head, and Into The Blue Light signals potential for AOTY (Album of the Year). Filled with deep and impactful emotion, melancholy and warmth, it's a long player that pulls at the heart-strings while firing up the dancefloor with chords, keys and melodies that hit those sweet spots, while booming in kick, bass and drums. Highlights include opener, "Won't Let You Ruin My Mood", the pop-aqua rave of "For The Last Time" and some piano-driven Moby inspirations in "The Joy You Once Felt".

Rubadub - (4:31) 80 BPM
Review: Steve Miller has been serving up Ibiza-inspired downtempo, chill out and Balearic tracks since the mid 1990s, so you'd expect his new album - titled 'Modern Balearic' in a nod to its contents - to be assured, atmospheric and expertly crafted. He begins via the densely layered ambient dub psychedelia of 'Rubadub', before drifting between stretched-out classic chill-out soundscapes ('Kya'), extra-percussive shroom-house ('Hallucinomat'), dubby nu-disco ('Sugarfoot', the bubbly beauty of 'Natural Causes'), saucer-eyed sunrise deepness ('Tiger Child', 'Bufo'), low-slung deep house haziness ('All I Wanted'), breakbeat-driven Balearic nu-jazz (the sub-heavy excellence of 'One Fine Day'), and acid-flecked, trance-inducing dancefloor bliss ('Big Ship').

Vijnana (Coyote Whirling Dervish remix) - (6:30) 80 BPM
Review: Higher Love Recordings enlists a global array of talents to completely reimagine Jazxing's Pearls Of The Baltic Sea LP, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. From Brooklyn-based Italian Danilo Braca's epic 12-minute transformation of "Fala" to Polotronic's hi-energy reimagining of "W Uscisku" that channels '80s synth-pop - this remix compilation is a sonic journey filled with diverse and reimagined material. Further in, James Bright's remake of "Artifacts" delivers a stripped-back, electronic stomp, while Andres y Xavi's take on "Hyacinth" creates a hazy sunrise atmosphere with acoustic guitar and fragile folk vocals. Das Komplex, Janka, and Balearic Ultras further contribute to compilation with each their own unique interpretation, while Nottingham's Is It Balearic? crew, Coyote, concludes the comp with an organic, percussive campfire groove in their remix of "Vijnana".

Review: Second time around for Hans-Peter Lindstrom's decidedly Balearic, prog rock-tinged Late Night Tales selection, which first saw the light of day back in 2007. This time round, it's been given a gloss of new paint in the form of a sparkling digital remaster. While this is all well and good, the selling point remains the Norwegian producer's excellent, left-of-centre selections. There's another chance to check his own cover of Vangelis' "Let It Happen", classic Balearica from Fearn Kinney and Carly Simon, acapella action from Todd Lundgren, freestyle ambient jazz-funk from George Duke, a slew of forgotten prog rock faves and a brilliant dub track from Oslo mates Prins Thomas and Todd Terje ("Reinbagan").

Terekke - "Just Ducking Around" - (2:50) 80 BPM
Review: In 2023, Music From Memory celebrates its remarkable decade-long journey with 10 - a captivating anniversary compilation that encapsulates the label's groundbreaking archival releases, cross-generational collaborations, and enduring creative partnerships. Inviting artists from their roster to contribute, the compilation weaves together a diverse tapestry of sound, featuring contributions from both foundational figures like Gigi Masin and emerging talents like The Zenmenn. Mirroring the label's ethos, 10 transcends temporal and spatial boundaries, spanning from Vito Ricci's "Da Hamptons" (1985) to Yu Su & J. Wilson's "Mitti Atar" (2023) - representing 10 countries across 17 tracks. This immersive musical journey, flowing seamlessly from start to finish, serves as a poignant reflection on Music From Memory's evolution. The compilation also becomes a significant tribute as it coincides with the passing of label co-owner Jamie Tiller during the finalisation of MFM066 - making 10 an emotionally resonant testament to the collective journey of the team.

Still, it's a formula that works - clearly, or they wouldn't be into their third decade - and if you're a fan of the label's mix of ambient, Balearic and downtempo vibes then 'Music For Mindfulness Vol 7' should more than satisfy, with some of the more notable tracks including the fragile beauty of Valentin Huedo's 'Wonderful Piano', Hess Is More's haunting, indie/psych-tinged 'You & Me & Them' and Willie Graff & Darren Eboli's dubby 'Pink Hotel'.

Para Jos? - (2:27) 87 BPM
Review: Some two years on from the release of his acclaimed 'A Landscape Onomatopeya' album on Shall Not Fade, Felipe Gordon delivers another fabulous full-length excursion. In the time that has passed since that set hit stores, the Colombian has become an even better producer and musician, and that's naturally reflected in the quality of the cuts on offer. There are naturally deep house gems aplenty - see the huggable, jazz-flecked grooves of 'Departing', warming and classy vocal number 'Authentic Feeling' (featuring Bob The Egoist), the simmering, sun-soaked 'Treat You Gently' and peak-time ready strut of 'What We Gonna Do' - but also some fine trips into downtempo deliciousness ('Para Jos', the album-opening title track), raging acid house ('Take It, Acid Comes'), and even a dash of modular synth-wave eccentricity ('Easel of Suave').

With global content coming from the likes of Australian producer Kayroy (who appeared on the label in 2020 with his Imaginary Expeditions EP) - hooking up with Jaspar Robinson in the star-strung "Satellite - you'll find warm and percussive synth remixes from Max Essa alongside some loose joints from The Mechanical Man. Also catch Chris Coco & Micko Roche's undeniable "What Is Love" (that guitar, those pipes) next to the percussive, broken beat and vocoded sounds of "The Healing Place" by Relative. Review: 14 months on from the release of its predecessor, Chris Coco offers up the third volume in his ongoing Balearic Classics series. OK, so the 'classics' in question all come from the archives of his sun-soaked, chill out-inspired DSPPR label, but there's no denying the quality of the warming, mostly slow-motion music on show. Check first the gorgeous slow-motion Balearic boogie of Antonio Prosper's 'Electro Balear', before admiring the dubbed-out Balearic pop exotica of Coyoye & Florecer's 'The Biggest', the dubby Balearic house shuffle of Coco Steel & Lovebomb's 'La Isla', the head-nodding Mediterranean hip-hop of Sadeedo's 'Asafeer Portixol' and the almost overwhelming beauty of LOVA's 'Madre Padre (To The End Edit)'.
