Review: Oh Serum and Voltage, what are we going to do? As if your single output throughout 2017 wasn't enough, you've ended the year with an entire album that's chock-fuller than Santa's sack! An insane cherry on the top of a gully crumpet, this is a romper roadblock with eyes fully-fixed on the dance... The eerie sci-fi samples and early Zinc style bassline Q&A on "Snakes Alive" Seriously, there are too many highlights here, the soul-bowling club fave "Cricket Bat", the venomous pingball bassline fire of "White Widow", the list of immaculate party hurters on here is near criminal. Sleep on this and Serum and Voltage will strike you!

Original Nuttah 25
Original Nuttah 25 - (3:51) 57 BPM
Original Nuttah 25 (feat IRAH - Chase & Status remix) - (3:43) 58 BPM Hot
Review: Original Nuttah is one of the, arguably the biggest, most seminal jungle track of all time. It's been 25 years of this track tearing up the dance and to celebrate, this very special single has been dropped with an updated VIP of the original and a huge Chase and Status remix. 'Original Nuttah 25' stays true to the original but switches up the intro a bit, making it a tad more spacious and injecting an extra element of wobbly energy. Chase and Status' remix has been doing the dub rounds for quite a while and deservedly so, with a ridiculously hype-inducing build up and another vocal layer from IRAH of 'Program' fame. Unreal stuff from some of the biggest legends in the scene.

Played by: Elsta, Brian Brainstorm
Review: It's been a strong year for both these cats... Sub Zero's brought back G Dub with Original Sin and DJ Limited has consistently smashed the year with massive EPs on Serial Killaz, Co-Lab and Biological. Now pairing up for the first time, the sign out the year with this walloping eight-tracker. Six originals deep, we range from the dark brass and sludgy swampy bass groans of "The Cure" to the hands-up Spyda-fronted skanker "Highest Respect" via the electrifying Charge-style riff stabbing title track "Vibrations". Elsewhere Inja takes the lead on the cool sub fluctuations on "Run", the rough sandpaper harmonics of "Are You Scared" and the classic grizzly riff and sizzling switches of "Grab Dem". Each one designed for prime dance mischief... Feel the vibrations!

Bye Bye Bye (feat Chronixx - SPY remix) - (4:17) 175 BPM
Too Shy (feat Sinead Harnett - Breakage remix) - (3:46) 57 BPM
Review: As ever, it looks like the legendary Shy FX is out to cause a ruckus in the raves as he unveils this brand new remix project, inviting some of the most talked about names in D&B to get involved with official remixes for for last year's 'Raggamuffin' project. From start to finish we are greeted with a pretty monumental roster, as we see the likes of The Sauce, SPY, Kings Of The Rollers, Breakage and more get involved. It's a mark of Shy FX's untouchable status within the scene to see just how well put together this project is, from the gnarly, rolling subs we find within Bou's remix of 'Warning' alongside Gappy Ranks, to the special acoustic version of Maverick Sabre's 'Call Me' collaboration. The whole selection just oozes class, with our highlight having to be Skeptical's on point remix of Balaclava, which see's him rework MC Spyda, D Double E and Frisco's catchy vocal runs into a dark & dangerous piece of dancefloor dynamite. Amazing work!

Review: Milton Keynes High R8 Digital are back with more dark side drum and bass shenanigans courtesy of their most recent recruits. Starting out with Hoogs' "The Comet (Majistrate remix)" which is reminiscent of classic Andy C or DJ Zinc from the early noughties, there's honourable mentions also to Sub Killaz with their stripped back and absolutely sketchy offering "Horror (Nu Elementz remix)" and of course Filthy Habits' "Hidden Secrets (Upgrade remix)" which is a seriously wonky journey through the dark side of breakbeat science. His remix up next of Dub Berzerka's "Born Bad" likewise demonstrates that this fella certainly 'ain't messing around!

Heist - "Setup" - (4:25) 175 BPM Hot
Serum - "Moon Unit" - (4:53) 176 BPM
Review: Serum & Heist: the only way this can get any heavier is if the EP came with a free elephant. It doesn't, but pachyderms ain't necessary when these two pack punches like this. Pure KO science in every tune, highlights include the breath taking groan on Serum's "Soul Travelling", the filtered waves of funk and wobbled-out subs on Heist's "Via The Shires", the jazzy twinkles and bouncy bassline charge on "People Of Earth" and classic Zinc-style dreamy twist up on "Soul Grapes". That's before we even mention the killer nature of "Setup" and "Moon Unit". Six b-line scuds, two absolute legends. You know what to do.

Balaclava (Skeptical Remix)
Balaclava (Skeptical remix) - (3:13) 175 BPM
Review: You can't see his face, but we bet our bottom dollar you can hear him... Taking Shy's Raggamuffin Mixtape banger and twisting it into a dark, ruded-up bubbler, modern day donny Skeptical has taken 'Balaclava' to the murkiest of new levels. Still featuring the high-grade MC rollcall of D Double, Frisco and Spyda, Shy's wry sense of gully remains fully intact as Skeppy tells us it will take more than a pandemic to hold him down. Ring the alarm!

A Bit Naughty - (4:23) 175 BPM
R.A.V.E.R (feat MC Endo) - (4:23) 175 BPM
Review: Simula makes his Low Down Deep debut with a gully banquet of four tasty dishes, let's tuck in... "Ravioli" hits with a sharp citrus bassline before slipping into something a little deeper on the breakdown, "Real Life Simulator" hits with similar levels of flavour as a sliding harmonic bassline slinks up and down the scales with Q&A mischief. "A Bit Naughty" flicks its biggest boogies at us by way of a savage machine gun percussive method and a bassline so curmudgeonly you'll need a defibrillator while "R.A.V.E.R" finishes with a classic elephantine groan and twisted vox from the one like Endo. Pasta la vista!

Review: Billed as 2013's biggest collection of reggae-fuelled party tracks, this madcap collaboration between New York's own reggae star Tuffist and newcomers Soul Rebel, DJ Tzinas and Bluntskull whips up new creations from some of reggae's finest tracks. From Toots and the Maytals to The Ethiopians, Soul Rebel, DJ Tzinas and Hammond Classics work together to bring a new flava, while Tuffist's jungle vibes and Bluntskull's breakbeat hype provide fresh new sounds to get the party skanking. StillZ - "Jazz Music" - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: Stillz returns to Gradient with one of his biggest EPs so far. Paying tribute to all the sesh fallen soldiers, the title track pays homage to all those crews who can't find a lighter when they get home for the afters as Stillz and Nick The Lot go full ploughman with the kicks and glitches. Five more fire-ups follow, each one as hearty and heavy. Highlights include the Gino-level slams and slaps of 'Autopilot', the tense eeriness and raw energy of the drop on 'Defect' and the playful horn action of 'Jazz Music'. Rest in peace to all the lost lighters.

Review: VIP time! Souped Up unleash some of the bossman's biggest specials from the last year. If you've seen him or Kings Of The Rollers play you'll already know them... Especially the hype riddled Inja fronted take on "Lumberjack". Modified Motion - "Simons Simple" - (3:44) 175 BPM
RV/Garry K - "Jonny Bravo" - (4:35) 174 BPM
Review: Random Concept calling an EP "Floor Fillers" is like Mr Kipling naming his new range of cakes as 'tasty'... We can't think of a release on the label that hasn't filled the floor! Stating the obvious is just one of the label's strengths, they can also put together a serious all star cast, as proved right here: Jayline's "Tommy Knocker" flexes with a vocal power that's reminiscent of DJ SS and Warren G's work together, Filthy Habits continue to dominate with a powerful jump-up ripper while Saxxon does a really trippy trick as a jazzy riff comes out of a radio tuning sample before leaping into a demonstratively dark bass riff. Elsewhere we find bong-busting Blackley doing the funky triplet thing on "Botanical", Modified Motion add a little bounce to the collection with a blend that's highly reminiscent of Moving Fusion back in the day while RV and Garry K close the show with an eerie stepper, all stretched out hollow bass and cheek-splintering snares.

Room 667 - (4:36) 172 BPM Hot
Review: Belgian producer Alex Perez steps aside from his long-standing association with Shogun Audio to launch his own label, 1985 Records. Described by the man himself as a "platform rooted primarily in the 85 / 170 BPM bracket but also going beyond with no rules applied," the label sets a high bar in the quality stakes with this Elephant Dreams 12" from Perez himself. Taut moody rolling ruffage is the order of the day on the title cut, one of two collaborations with Skeptical, whilst "Had I Known" offers a more hopeful vibe before a dank mood descends on "STNKR". This broken slab of bass science is the highlight here, though the closing brittle jungle of Skeptical co-production "Room 667" isn't far behind!

Review: Jeepers creepers Simula's on the strong stuff again. Seriously...Take one listen to the textures on "Jester" and tell us that's the work of a sane mind. Strange, innovative and unique, it's just one of the six twisted sizzlers on parade here: the rifle-snipping laser love of "Gunfire", the sinewy croaks and 1.21 giggawatt power of the bass on "Trigger Happy" and the pure venom rust of "Swamped" are just a few of the many highlights. Strong enough to turn an intro into an extro, Simula doesn't mess around.

Review: These are the breaks! Super-longstanding D&B bastion Drum&BassArena unleash their first EP in over 10 years with a special dedication to the driving drum fusion that's powered all our favourite jungle jams: The breakbeat. It's an all-star cast too... Bladerunner does his thing with a classic subby wobble and skippy breaks, Shimon gets his bouncy skank on with Darrison on "Believe It" while June Miller, James Marvel & MC Mota flip the breaks into a steppier, more fractured dancehall/jungle/madness switch up on "Don Dada". Those in need of a hardcore injection of rave purity should seek and support John B's ruthless "ENERGY" and A.M.C & Turno's glacier-blasting tech-jump melter "Ice Cold". Dedication's what you need.

Badboy - (4:32) 175 BPM
Review: Long time murker and Born On Road veteran Selecta J-Man teams up with some of the best MCs in the game for his "My Style" EP. Redders joins the fray first with the purring, slinky "My Style" that's wrought in tension and dark, sleek dynamics. Rider Shafique follows, bringing his own unique narrative and tones over a scratchy, gnarly riddim that's part jump-up, part blender, all nasty. Completing the triple threat comes David Boomah who brings a sense of triumph to "Stronger" before J-Man shuts us down with two crucial instrumentals; the dark rave energy of "Kill Sound" and the steppy grizzles of "Badboy". Ruff!

The Collab EP
Sub Zero/Majistrate - "Weapon Of Choice" - (4:48) 174 BPM Hot
Sub Zero/Jaydan - "Fear" - (4:27) 175 BPM
Sub Zero/Dub Motion - "Oh Girl" - (4:33) 174 BPM
Sub Zero/DJ Limited - "How To Act" - (5:16) 175 BPM
Review: You can always bank on Subby releasing one massive EP every year. And this one's extra massive as he's brought four mates along for the ride. Complementing his already beautifully brutal style, each collaboration brings out a different side in the Newcastle producer: Maji tickles the jump-up darkness out of him on "Weapon Of Choice", Jaydan encourages a little off-beat subversion while retaining the dancefloor punch while Dub Motion complements Sub Zero's jungle roots with a delicious roller that's as soulful as it is dark. Finally we hit "How To Act" where Sub Zero and DJ Limited lay down the trippiest, most weirded out bassline you'll hear all week, month, possibly even year.

Review: Oh gosh. Total Science ante up for the summer with this exceptional V/A EP on their CIA imprint. Kicking off with a crucial new remix of their classic "Nosher" by their new hybrid gang comprising themselves, DLR and Hydro, full breadth and variation abounds as we dip into the gilded soul of Zero T & Phase's "Talk To Me", the gnarled grizzles and dubby danger of their own "Devil's Gate" with Scar member Script and the grand finale; a heavyweight purring roller from two of the most respected newcomers in the game right now: Ill Truth and SATL. Review: It's about time drum & bass made a statement about dangers of drugs, and who'd have thought it would be a pair of killers to do it' "Dealerz" gets high on its own supply with uncut grit and danger while "Jitterbug" warns of the tragic after effects of narcotics as you won't stop shifting and skanking for weeks. Elsewhere they foretell the dangers of the herb with the menacing, staccato bassline bruising "Ganja Man", the perilous problems with euphoria and goosebumps on "Feeling You" and send us off to rehab with the savage organ-squeezing, robot pleasing twisted laser bass crescendo "Through The Clouds" Just say yes mate.

Review: Sub Zero don't need a write-up from us to get you pumped, the bassline on "Inside the Beast" already has floors packed out for months and things aren't getting any less claustrophobic. This EP brings out all the things we love about Sub Zero in one neat, destructive package. Big bass, slammin' snares, the ridiculous beats... let's face it, nobody does it better. In amongst the jump-up there's some real experimental gems, pushing his sound further than ever before in tunes like "Bakyard Skank" and steamy roller "Hearts On Fire". Well worth a shuffle.

Review: Coming in hot off the back of some great releases is both Sota and label Pick N Mix, who have collaborated on the producer's 8Bit EP, a six-tracker that spans a variety of sounds, all of which are driving and filled with purpose. Title track '8Bit' is a jagged roller with a great flowing feel to the percussion and an arrangement chock a block with funk and soul, despite its constituent elements being far from soulful. That's the sign of a good heavy D&B track and both producer and artist have nailed it.

Review: In the wake of key dispatches on the likes of Liondub, Subway, G13, Digital Terror and High R8, Sub Killaz continue their murderous mission this year with more titanium tear-out gold and cheeky homages to hip-hop's golden era. Just when you've worked out "Shock Out" along flies in a flamenco from nowhere. Elsewhere "Catch My Drift" punches with a unique sense of off-beat funk with Migos muscle and "Dangerous" goes for the drama vibe with its sweeping staccato riff. Finally "Rap Music" shuts us down with restrained stepper where a clipped bass tone grunts a sharp riff that's mirrored by the overweight subs. Get connected.

Master Error - "Soundclash" - (3:39) 175 BPM
Review: Fire in the hole! Master Error gets a few of his mates together for a session that's rowdy and heavy enough to wake the dead. Skore's on side from the off with 'Dead Creatures', a furious piece laced with a staccato bassline and a beautiful rave breakdown while Warhead joins in the scrap with the wonky bleeped out swagger jam 'Circulator' and Metal Work gets involved in remix form on the ugly tear-up 'Balance Of Terror'. Elsehwere 'XMNV' is pure laser grot while 'Ready' could soundtrack you joyriding into the shop window of a deluxe robot shop. Dead good.

Review: The Fibonacci Sequence is in everything... It's in the patterns of pinecones, the eye of a hurricane, the swirl of the galaxies... And now in your own collection as man like Skeppy returns with his first fresh produce since his debut album last yeah Enjoy This Trip. Four cuts deep, all rumbling with Skeptacular bassweight, it's a stark return to form for the influential producer. "Charge" is a proper bulldozer roller vibe, "Snail Trail" is a graveyard ballet creeper while "Mechanism" has a proper waspish mischievous buzz running through the groove. Last but not least we have the deep brooding title track. Proper percussive rolling headnodder, fans of "Imperial" will be all over this. Exceptional.

Review: What a trip it's been for Spectrasoul; going solo with their label Ish Chat in spring 2016, they've assaulted us continuously over the course of 18 months. Taking us deep, dark, soulful, savage with abandon; never before has their melting pot been so fizzy or foundational. Naturally this third album is no exception as we glide and slide between the styles; the "Glimpse"-style space soul of "Move On", the Fracture-like hardcore references on "Push & Pull", the trembling chimes, sweeping strings and delicate vocals of "Wrong To Love You"(with LSB), the classic techstep movement of "Pinger" are just a handful of on-point constructions from a duo who are living the creative dream right now. Essential.

Square Root - (5:15) 175 BPM
Review: Finally! After what seems like an eternity, Souped Up bossman Serum unleashes one of his most long-awaited dubplates 'Lumberjack'. Often topped with a killer flow from Inja, here it is in all its hooky, ever-mutating glory. It's backed with an equally riffy wriggler "Square Root". Bleepy and weird but a hell of a lot of fun, it's like spending a night camped out in a transistor radio with some high quality rum. Serum's a lumberjack... And we're okay!

Review: Fair play it's been an impressive run from DJ Warden's Bagged & Tagged this year, despite the rona working its wicked way with 2020. Following massive EPs from the likes of Total Recall, BlckHry and Obbley & Maze the label now hits with its biggest release to date... An all-star remix EP featuring the likes of Heist, Nu Elementz, Slipz and D-Nasty. All off them given the green light to go nuts on some of the label's most distinctive cuts so far. Highlights include Heist's raucous harmonic twist on the bassline of Vital & Phenom's 'Hoe Money' and D-Nasty's skin-melting technoid riff. Disgusting. Bag this one right now.

Bingo - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: Usually spotted on Samurai Bass, Stafford's Subsonic jumps aboard the good ship Subway Soundz with four disgusting battle tracks. All of which pack serious infectious bass riffs: "Shaolin" is all about the 97 style wobble, "Crunchy Nut" is a cross between a swarm of killer bees and a grumpy young Clipz, "Destroy" makes you feel like you're stuck in a metal tube while kids are kicking footballs really hard at the walls outside (in the nicest possible way) while "Bingo" goes for an early 2000s BBK style drama jam. Full house!

Review: Following his free download on the label earlier this year newcomer SMG returns to PullUp with a full EP release. Six tracks in total: the tone and pace is set by the bendy, futurist synths of the title track as we slink, slide and writhe to the greasy minimal funk. Highlights include the strange springy funk and croaks of 'Gravitation', the full-bodied swagger of 'Ha' and the sterner lyrical focus with Fraser on 'Movements'. SMG: Stinking. Murky. Great.

Review: Make the most of Serum's incredible output because at one point he's going to get arrested for murderation. And with this level of killer material, they'll throw away the key. "Black Metal" is the ultimate doom monger with its indecent drone texture that just groans malevolently over Serum's trademark rolling beats, "Ramparts" riffs on bag-rustling double bass while "Skeleton Key" strips the vibe right back to its essential ice-cold oscillating elements. Three more absolute killers from one of drum & bass's most respected artists right now.

Take My Breath Away/In Too Deep
Take My Breath Away - (6:45) 176 BPM Hot
In Too Deep - (6:05) 172 BPM
Review: Powerhouse collabo business: Longstanding craftsman Serum joins forces with fast-rising duo T & Oberon for two understated space-travel rollers that shake and shudder with the perfect balance of shades and energy. "Take My Breath Away" is all about the star-gazing; the pads, vocals and extra-sweeping chords live up to the title while a depth plunge bassline ensures maximal weight and punch. "In Too Deep", meanwhile, nods its cap to classic house and tech foundations with a rising riff that wouldn't go amiss in a Stephan Bodzin set, neatly softened by a soulful vocal snippet. Fresh material.

Review: Serum on 31... You already know this will hurt you without even pressing play, don't you? For formality's sake, here's the 411: "Species" is a real deep swing grumbler underpinned with a brilliantly tuned moaning bassline while its VIP provides a more fluctuating take on the bass for more of an aggy twist. "Redeemer" tips a wry nod at "Shadow Boxing" with its endless sheet-like bass panelling everything in its wake and "Blood Red" is gulliness incarnate. Heads business, this.

Ripped Open - (4:49) 178 BPM
Pulse-S - (4:53) 178 BPM
Review: Souper douper danger: Serum takes the controls for his label's second release with three more killer jams. "Earth Rot" pings and zips with a high frequency metallic rubber ball bassline while "Ripped Open" lives up to its name tears us all a new one as it stabs hard with a Mampi-style sense of focus and drama. Finally "Pulse-S" represents Serum's more leftfield sense of funk with a tin-of-bees bass buzz that wobbles raffishly off the kicks. Yet another soup filled with at least three of your five a day, once again Serum smashes it in his own unique way.

Co-boss Rowney takes the lead with the savage "Still On It", setting the scene for the new breed to smash down. Bou, Leaf & Dutta go all jazzy and harmonic on "Waterfall", Niterider gets all low-swung and switchy with "Fire Emoji", Jammin brings the mystic pressure with "Marijuana", Salvage gets classic with the cymbal-crashing, bass-mashing grunter "Don't Stop" while newblood Tringy finishes on the spooked-out wobbler "Poltergeist". Sub Zero pirouettes into the mix first with the gully ballet that 'Bullet'. He's backed up by a whole host of young talent; Bennie & CLB get wavey to the ravey rushes on 'Spark It', Stance, Jenks and Fearnquest get dark on 'Stamina' while Napes and Xav pay tribute to the pirate on the disgusting stripped back stepper session 'Four Fists'.
