Review: Secret Value Orchestra's "Porta", the track chosen to promote the band's debut album, Unidentified Flying Object, tickled our fancy when it dropped earlier in the year. Happily, we can confirm that the finished set is rather good, too. They have taken a widescreen approach, delivering tracks that combine warm and melodious elements associated with both deep house and disco (rubbery electric bass, Rhodes keys, slick boogie synths, and so on) with a variety of rhythmic approaches. So, while a hazy and quietly soulful fusion of house and disco is their stock-in-trade, they also find space to include a fizzing D&B roller ("The Dog"), a dash of jazz-funk ("Superdriver") and some head-nodding hip-hop soul ("Get Enough").

Review: Jay B and Solley's Section project hits a new level of heritage notes with four slabs of timeless junglism; "Pull Up" has that rattling rolling sound that Randall and a young Andy C championed almost 25 years ago, with its brutal sheets of distorted bass "Easy War" is straight out of the book of Dillinja circa "Grimey", "Rasta Vibes" is a neat dubby roller not dissimilar to the early work of Breakage while "Come Ready" finishes on a dark tech vibe with subtle nuances of Headz coded deep into the atmospheres. Four disparate styles, four more reasons to be rocking Section jams all day long.

Review: From the outset, this release screams ragga sonics. From the artwork to the basslines, Section's Step Off EP is a work full of rusty jungle vibes and roughed-up edges, each bar of each tune coming together to make this un-sophisticated yet banging EP. The title tune features Junior Red and sets the tone for the whole release: reggae sounds and diving low-frequency shakes. There's a definite element of minimalist force throughout, though, 'Mad As Hell' exemplifying Section's ability to take things down a dark and dirty turn. Special mention to 'Black Friday' for bringing up the rear with some pristine jungle work, combining both heaviness and lightness to great effect.

Review: Section is on Locked Up Music this week for a roughshod, rough-and-tumble release full of jungle flavours and dark soundscapes. I mean, just look at that artwork. Did you think this was going to be a release of niceties? The title track is a break-laden jungle stormer which just progresses and progresses, never staying still and with a new twist behind every breakdown. 'Puzzle' is the other highlight, a dark, pulsating number that rests on a broken sense of percussive travel and which continues the trend of excellent track progression. Top EP.

Review: Locked Up Music bossman Section steps over to Counterpoint for the release of his life... His debut album. Written during the most intense throes of covid lockdowns (while working a day job in the NHS), these tracks were an outlet for Section to make sense of the world... And weave his own musical web that goes back to some of the deepest roots of D&B jungle. Wearing his heart on his sleeve (alongside collaborating mates such as OB1, Jem-One, Inner Terrain and his right hand man Flashback in Dark Ops) Section hurls us into a heady maze of triumphs and tear-ups ranging from the emotional roll-out 'Fly To Me' to the much more brutalist and tech-like 'One'. With all kinds of styles and shades in between, this is an exceptional drum & bass album that's both highly personal and universal.

Review: Section has landed on Dubsoul Recordings for a really nice single, a double-tracker that's grounded in a sense of junglism but which extends beyond your average jungle cut. The percussion across both tunes is next-level, with a hypnotically intricate tapestry of bongos, snares and kicks which all sit idyllically alongside each other. 'Pushover' has more space in the arrangement and subtler back end, but 'Offshore' injects an element of melancholia with the sound of seagulls and waves washing up on the shore. We'll let you decide which is better.
