Review: Will Benton's label, FatKidOnFire, has a seriously heavy rep for delivering only the most forward thinking productions by the edgiest producers. Each release only has a catalogue number and that's the way it should be - no clutter, just underground sounds. Chokez is the latest to grace the FKOF ranks, turning in this uber meditative four track single. He was discovered by accident when Kaiju uncovered a bootleg of their own tune by this cheeky Londoner... Highlights include the sub-heavy ancient orient vibes of "Ras Samurai VIP" and EP highlight, the deep and dubby headnodder, "Madda".

Review: Continually keeping the pressure up with ever more diverse explorations of the 140 bpm landscape, DJ Madd has been on a productive run of late. Alongside quality 7" releases for ZamZam Sounds this release comes to light in a sly nod to the evergreen "Sleng Teng" riddim. "Peng Teng" features Redders dropping a fiery vocal rant, while Madd rocks a set of tidy jungle breaks, trap drum machine rushes and plenty more necessary ingredients for a surefire club smasher. "Cachit" keeps the intricacy levels up with some very tightly wound drums, while "Gunshot" rides on a rootsy skank alongside the more modern elements. "Champion" meanwhile brings a little dancehall swagger into the mix, rounding off the EP in fine style.

Review: A:Grade continues to live up to his name with this stunning five-piece suite. It launches with a cowboy-laced stepper session that's laced with a whole range of strange staccato hooks and counter hooks, "Rusty Swing" also lives up to its name as A:Grade takes a squeaky tone and creatively wraps up a whole jam around it, "Claggy" takes us to the far east via the karzy while "Blockchain" gives the bitcoin bros a run for their money with its bullishness and relentlessness. For his finale salute A:Grade gives us "Psionic", a springy stepper coated with trippy sci-fi textures and enough techno tendencies to power a small village. Handle with caution.

Review: With Innamind Recordings being such a forward thinking label project, we were absolutely thrilled to see this one land in our store as Ago steps out for a full length LP project, showcasing his versatility within the expansive realms of 140. What a project it is as well, from the smooth celestial synthesis of 'Above' and 'Deer' to the more dubwise influenced rolling percussion of 'So I Smoke' and 'Dragon Love'. Our highlights for this project however have to be the unpredictable yet incredibly smooth sounds of 'Blur', along with the sumptuous dubby switch ups and tumultuous sub pressures of 'Deer Dub'.

Big Boss - (5:03) 140 BPM Hot
Black Books - (4:43) 140 BPM
Review: The follow up to ubiquitous, much referenced, heavily remixed and frequently circulated anthem of 2010 "Sweet Shop", Circus owner Doctor P comes up with another future classic on his own imprint. Imagine piping Rusko-style synth warblings, whippet screeches, a sprinkling of High Rankin's eccentricity and vocals which are straight out of Fresh's Kryptonite "Chacruna", and that's "Big Boss". "Black Books" is less Bernard Black and more Manny gone mad, with a rave-referencing intro, bouncing beats, bleepy progressions and sense that something's about to explode. A sure fire hit on the dancefloor, no doubt.

Review: Russian ragamuffinski Steppa Style bumps up to Totally Dubwise with the follow-up to 2014's still-toasty See The World. Once again it's a vibrant church that's all rooted by reggae and digidub cornerstones. From the rising skanks and gutsy harmonis of "Musical Murder" to the bouncy soundsystem-primed bass of "Ready We Ready" via the rougher rapid-fire flow of "Road", he sets the scene perfect for an immense jungle skank-out for the second half of the album: the savage spitfire feels of "Raggamuffinski", the Aphordite style jumps of "Rolling Stone" and the Chopstickesque party ragga jam "Step Aside" The vibey list goes on and on.

What's There - (6:24) Hot
Acireams - (5:26)
Ikopol - (4:55)
Review: Dauwd caused a bit of a stir earlier this year with a free digital EP released through Pictures Music, and now he gets his first release proper with What's There. The title track is characterised by its melodic approach to bass music, with elastic synths and water droplet sonics accented with minimal, clicky percussion. It's a deceptive track which unfolds itself gradually, hitting you between the eyes with its emotional climax. The other tracks don't disappoint either, with "Acireams" utilising a straighter 4/4 beat with a palette of warm synth textures and clipped samples. Perhaps the real gem is "Ikopol", with its golden tones and bright bell percussion in combination with its rich bass and house untertones is perhaps exactly what you'd imagine a collaboration between Four Tet and Martyn to sound like. An incredible debut from what looks set to be one to watch in 2012.

Review: Time for some proper, authentic dubstep: District returns to Chestplate with three straight up slabs of bass power. "Drowsy" starts with a slouchy funk to the beat before dropping into a fat, fuzzy 2008 bassline that refuses to hold back its playfulness. Both "Street Knowledge" and "Locking Up" are much darker, deeper creepers with lava basslines oozing down the volcanic halfstep drums. The former is all sci-fi and pranged out, the latter peeps down into the dungeon without resorting to type. Drop them after 3am and you'll be nothing short of knighted.

Von D - "Analog Sound" - (5:34) 142 BPM
Egoless - "Bubble Beat" - (4:49) 140 BPM Hot
Review: This is the first time that Egoless and Von D team up for an EP, but already we can hear them syncing up perfectly thanks to their love for deep and sweltering UK bass. In all honesty, Von D's "Analog Sound" is a traditional dubstep tune, the sort of heavyweight swelter that knocks you from side to side and gets your head nodding from pure kinetic instinct - this will surely go down well at the DMZ showdowns. Egoless' "Bubble Beat" is something slightly different and, although it is also part of the 'classic' dubstep template, the tune breaks that groove pattern into something quirkier, more leftfield and reminiscent of Egoless' other choice material.

Review: When it comes to dubstep and its pioneers, people always drop the same names: Mala, Skream, Youngsta etc etc. But, there's another name that has been around since the FWD golden days. That name is Distance. Like many others who were involved in the scene's foundations, Distance has preferred to remain in the shadows, away from DJ booths, and firmly on his mixing board in the studio. If we're talking labels, he'd done 'em all - Hotflush, Planet Mu...the list goes on. Pinch's Tectonic feels like the perfect place to drop his new LP, especially because it strays way beyond the usual confinements of dubstep, and into whole new categories. From juke to bassline, and even techno, Dynamis is an album for lovers of the bass form. If that's your kink, this piece of work has got all the ingredients to satisfy your every need. Twisted basslines, haphazard beat flexes, and even some mashup lyricism. Sink your teeth, innit.

Review: Kudos-enriched bass site Fat Kid On Fire follow up their Un/Known album earlier this year with their first full single release. With such a stamp of authority, and the fact it's been penned by the never-failing Dubfreq, this shouldn't need much of a hard sell. Each cut tickles a different corner of the dance; "Next To Me" shimmers with delicate vocal dynamics, "Selenky" offers the peaktime saw-tooth swagger-punch and both "Excuse Me Officer" and "MSH" leaning back on a funkier skank flex. Each cut really shines with same enthusiasm, clarity and wit as FKOF itself. This could be the start of something very special.

Review: New signing J Kenzo marks the 56th release for Youngsta's legendary Tempa label. Unsurprisingly, it's a typically dark and dubbed out offering from the more cerebral side of dubstep. Title track "The Roteks" kicks off with a hovering sense of uncertainty, with faint industrial shivers and a warping bassline. A quasi-scientific sounding vocal sample heralds the movement into the main tune, which features blustering kicks, snapping snares and bellowing bass. "Protected" moves from the post-apocalyptic sounds of the intro into a half-step roller with plenty of appeal for fans of Kryptic Minds, Distance and DMZ.

Review: This is a set of tracks we've certainly been looking forward to getting our teeth stuck into. Straight out of London, Samba steps out onto the Crucial Recordings imprint for a certified belter of a release. The title track "Malignant" is a steppers dream, blending subtle percussion and powerful subs with eerie atmospherics to chilling success. The remixes come by way of dubstep legends: Sleeper and Bukez Finezt who both rework the composition into their signature styles. Finally the VIP mix of Un is pure dance floor dynamite, boasting earth tremering basslines and haunting synth melodies wrapped up with a bow on top. I mean what more could you ask for...

With the help of My Nu Leng affiliate Dread MC "The Drum" sets the message clear: big thumps and uncompromised weight. Review: Polish talent Satl returns to Lenzman's label The North Quarter with his most accomplished and wide-armed bodies of work so far. Taking us on a trip through his influences and widescreen musical vision, the album stretches from full-on technoid D&B ('Hard Times') to bubbling, twisted funk ('Werk It') via smouldering, unclassifiable dark soul ('Ride Or Die') and dreamy breakbeats ('Standing By') With many other sides to his sound revealed throughout, this is an exceptional and very impressive album.

Review: Poland-born Radikal Guru is a past master at blending the grizzled, bassbin-bothering sounds of dubstep with deep dub and soulful roots influences. As a result, his releases have an easy accessibility and effortlessly breezy vibe that's almost impossible to dislike. This second full length (his first dropped in 2011) offers more of the same, delivering a mix of dubwise steppers ("Spaced Out", "Different Dub", "Indra"), delay and echo-drenched dancefloor dubscapes ("Subconscious", "Outernational"), and sweet, conscious, roots-influenced songs ("Stay Calm", featuring YT, and the superb Echo Ranks hook-up "Warning!"). It's a blend that guarantees a pleasing, laidback listen.

Review: Mr.K is exactly the sort of producer to fit into the Wheel&Deal imprint, a label whose sole purpose is to detonate seriously hazardous levels of low frequencies upon any listener of dancer. These five tracks all offer something different; "Chit Chat" feels like the sort of beats that Mala likes to get his hands on prior to a DMZ rave, and "Dope Fiend" is like its natural successor, a track with higher level of bass emanating from all corners. "O.G" is a slower, bumpier ride with an eerie crescendo of sonics, and "Pho" leaves plenty of smoke in the air with its hazy, imperceptible later of shady harmonies.

Hybrid (Biome remix) - (5:49) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Although credited to both Biome and label co-owners Kryptic Minds, this excellent two-tracker is really a showcase for the former's growing production skills. "The Raven", for example, is a solo Biome production. Built around an impressive combination of low-slung dubstep rhythms and spooky, twinkling soundtrack melodies, it sounds like it should be featured in a gritty British thriller, possibly at the moment the film's hero realizes one of his family has just been killed by a gang of Serbian nutters. "Hybrid", meanwhile, sees Biome deliver a particularly creepy reworking of a Kryptic Minds original. More obviously dubbed-out than its predecessor, it's nevertheless intensely likeable.

Review: We've been waiting for this a long, long time... "N To The Gs" is The Generals' most generous release since the "Five Star" EP two years ago. Five tracks deep, each one reminding us how hard Footsie and D Double E work. "Levels" will be recognisable to all house heads as they murk the Dickens out of a My Nu Leng vibe. "Bang Boi" updates the angular, aggy eski beat riddim with additional voices from Brakeman & Chronic while "Murking Yearly" nods its head to a classic west coast hip-hop mood. The most critical moment for many, though, will be an update of the 2003 classic "Frontline" wherein original member Monkstar returns for the first time in about a decade. Heritage hype.

Review: Bristol-based bass enthusiast Sorrow has a reputation as a "moody electronic outsider", at least musically speaking. While this latest EP on his Shinigrim imprint is, predictably, more than a little on the baked side, the young producer mostly steers clear of pitch-black paranoia. Opener "Stockyards" boasts clean, punchy percussion and throbbing sub-bass, but feels breezy rather than stiflingly humid. The same could be said about the swinging, dub-wise "Projekts", while "Pirate Banter" makes great use of ricocheting dub samples and a booming, pitched-down soundsystem "riddim". Even "Arisen", with its' manipulated R&B vocal samples and foreboding bass drops, is relatively cheery.

Chamber Music - (4:46) 140 BPM
Review: Consequence's debut for the ever-reliable Tempa comprises of a couple of razor sharp, on point half-step cuts. "Injunction" builds gradually from a stripped back intro of a smacking snare drum and glowering atmospherics into an ominous main part, replete with breathy vocal, bubbling subs and an eerie gloom, becoming almost tribal towards the end. The accompanying "Chamber Music" is just as hypnotic with its hushed chanting, speckled beats and throbbing bass. This is music for the heads, no question.

Review: Big things have been expected from Lunice since his first remixes slipped out on Big Dada and Top Billin' in 2009. Those who groove to the sounds of Mike Slott, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and Nosaj Thing have been waiting patiently for a proper release from the Montreal based producer for too long! Props then to Luckyme, for delivering Stacker Upper, the 21 year-olds first official single release. Whilst nowhere near as far-out, experimental or genre re-defining as some of his LuckyMe contemporaries, Lunice still offers a fresh new twist on hip-hop. The real genius is the simplicity of his sound. Somehow, Lunice is able to make memorable, hum-able tunes with only a handful of elements. Take lead cut "Hitnames Anthem"; while little more than a beat, bassline and rising/falling keyboard melody, it sounds big. The same can be said of the bass bin-bothering "Hip Pop" or crunked out, analogue freakout "Purp Walk". Even the EP's most complex track - the wonderfully sweet and melodic "Fancy Forty" (backed, incidentally, by a great Rustie rework) - comes cloaked in Lunice's trademark production
