Sleeper - "Coxsone Dub" - (2:49) 105 BPM
Review: Whether it's as a performer, a producer or a label head honcho, J:Kenzo has never done things by halves, so Artikal's debut long player was always going to be special. 15 exclusive cuts from the label's talented family and friends, this collection of contributions doesn't just document where bass music is at, but where it's heading. Each track is a highlight in itself, but it's cuts like the slinky hypnotic groove and cosmic congas of TMSV's "Scorpion", Sleeper's star-gazing, dub-drenched sub science of "Coxsone Dub", Skeptical's lesson minimalism and aggy restraint ("Skavenger") and Eshone's treacle-like dirge "Qualia" that really represent the depth, scope and vision of Artikal. Designed for the dance, arranged so well it works as an entire listening experience, Artikal don't do things by halves.

Mob Killa - "Company Dub" - (4:11) 105 BPM
Review: Foundation celebrate three years and 20 releases with this supersized clutch of deep, dark and forward-thinking exclusives. Painting a picture of dubstep's most exciting frontiers, highlights hang, slide and oozes from every cavernous corner: Drew's Theory provides meditative intensity on "Harmony", Deafblind & Darkimh twist up the drums in the sludge-packing "Concrete Groove", Krease soundtracks your next nightmares with his late night graveyard romp "Hindsight" while Dillard digs deep into the proper roots with its shimmering classical dub designs. Weighing at 24 tracks, Foundation have pulled out all the stops here... A seriously detailed piece of bass music futurism.

Dwyrain Canol - (5:41) 103 BPM
Review: After putting out release for Macabre Unit, Imperial Audio and Phantom Hertz Recordings, Feonix debuts in full on Uprise Audio with a debut, self-titled album. Littered with collaborations, the album is a dark affair with light added by the voices of Simetra and Kaya, while Na Kika's contribution to "Central" keeps the mood hallowed. For a chunk of empty space punctuated by bass stabs, tribal drums and haunting chimes check out "Source", while "All I Ask" has the clunk of Scuba's "Latch" paired with detuned vocals that bring to mind FKA Twigs. And for no nonsense dubby dubstep it's all about "West".

Sink Or Swim - (4:21) 100 BPM
Review: When it comes to dubstep and its pioneers, people always drop the same names: Mala, Skream, Youngsta etc etc. But, there's another name that has been around since the FWD golden days. That name is Distance. Like many others who were involved in the scene's foundations, Distance has preferred to remain in the shadows, away from DJ booths, and firmly on his mixing board in the studio. If we're talking labels, he'd done 'em all - Hotflush, Planet Mu...the list goes on. Pinch's Tectonic feels like the perfect place to drop his new LP, especially because it strays way beyond the usual confinements of dubstep, and into whole new categories. From juke to bassline, and even techno, Dynamis is an album for lovers of the bass form. If that's your kink, this piece of work has got all the ingredients to satisfy your every need. Twisted basslines, haphazard beat flexes, and even some mashup lyricism. Sink your teeth, innit.

Headland - "Guillotine" - (4:32) 107 BPM
Review: It's always an exciting thing to witness a new 1985 bombshell land in the store, with this monstrous four track display from some of the most vibrant names in 140 being no exception to that. First up, the blobby warbles and siren-like synthesiser melodies of Ebb's 'Corrosive Soul' arrive with a major bag of oomph, giving us a swampy swinger to kick off proceedings. Next, label maestro Aliex Perez unleashes a sub-heavy warbler in 'Pulsate', pushing any speakerbox to it's low end limit, before Headland re-ignites the party flavour with the slower paced glitchy gulps of 'Guillotine' for a major sonic switch up. Finally, Samba gets busy with a gnarly piece of gristle as 'Six To Six' lets fly a gnarly combination of synths and drum slaps, rounding off the project with a weighty finish.

Lander - (4:04) 105 BPM
Review: Dubstep producer Alex Fox - better known under his Sleeper alias - is remarkably productive; amazingly, Lander is his 11th single since the beginning of 2013. Here he returns to regular home Chestplate for another three-track bass assault. The title track wallows in the space Fox creates between its sparse elements. While little more than a collection of electronic noises, cavernous sub and a crunchy rhythm, it sounds unfeasibly roomy. The same could be said about the delay-laden "Stronghold", whose reverb-heavy hits and military snares work in perfect cohesion with Fox's intense bass. This dub-wise approach is intensified on "Crucially Dubbing", with ricocheting electronics and breakcore-influenced glitches spinning between the left and right channels.

Review: Now we don't know what is in the water where Cartridge is living right now, but blimey! This new selection from him on the super-consistent Locus Sound imprint is yet another showcase into his dubstep-driven brilliance, kicking off with the sub-shattering low end and unpredictable drum manoeuvres of 'Iron Lung', before 'Two Of Us' combines fluttering melodic inputs with lethal bass growls. Next, 'Tek Time' unleashes a stunning soundscape of glitchy lead synth designs and haunting string jerks, before rounding the EP off in style with the crunchy bass exploits and groovy percussive marches of 'Brute'. Awesome work!

Eerie Voices - (5:02) 105 BPM
Review: One of Germany's most respected dubstep producers, Bukez celebrates 10 years of honing his skills - often with humour and always with heaviness - with his debut album. Known for spanning the range from the deepest, shadowiest of cuts and the silliest of balls-out drops, Bukez lays it on the line right here in style. We slouch to the skank-packed summer jam "Shaka Taak", we gyrate uncontrollably to the timpani teases of "Eerie Voices" we enjoy sweet dub dreams in a ghost town on "Illuminated Droplets" and we're hurling our shoes out of the window by the time "Neonzombieattack" cuts through the rig. A lot of time has been spent on this body of work and you can really tell.

Buried (feat Ghidorah) - (3:32) 106 BPM
Played by: Sashwat, Tik&Borrow
Review: As far as dubstep releases go, White Peach have unlocked a gem here as they bring forth one of the most highly anticipated collaboratory 140 projects in recent times. We are truly blessed to hear this four track polypheme come together, as we begin our journey down under with super sidechains and eastern inspired melodies of 'Buried', alongside 'Ghidorah'. Next up, 'Hatchet' wheels into view, stacked with arpeggiated energies and broad Arabic string harmonies, before 'Pariah's spooky textures are let loose for track three. Finally, we finish up with a real kick as 'Tusk' unleashes an array of hypnotic melodies and grizzly sub textures, perfect for setting the dance alight.

Cimm - "Stressin'" (feat SGT Pokes) - (3:55) 105 BPM
Review: When we heard the news that Cimm had an album on the way, we could barely contain our excitement. When we then learnt it was to be featured on Sentry, our expectations tripled, and boy does Cimm deliver! The project takes the name 'Unknown Caller!!' and is a perfect embodiment of what today's deep dubstep scene represents, from the irresistible sub pressures of 'The Corner' alongside Rider Shafique to eastern-dub hybrids of 'Blue Sapphire' and lower tempo bass quakes of 'I Am Jack Travis'. The collaborations are fruitful on this one, as Cimm also invites Youngsta, Mr K, SGT Pokes, Riko Dan and Animai to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the strongest dubstep projects of the year.

Shu/Zygos - "Landfall" - (4:44) 105 BPM
Review: Lately we've witnessed well-respected dubstep imprints announce their spin-off release series. Subaltern Records is amongst those few, launching its first various artist compilation on the 20th of October 2017. Entitled as "Kaleidoscope" you can expect music from respectively Helktram, D-Operation Drop, ILL_K, Shu and Zygos on Volume 1. Interestingly quite a few new signees are being introduced to Subaltern via this four track EP, which makes us even more excited for the series' future. Briefly, this compilation of different styles and artists, attentively picked by label owner Mentha, is blending all together smoothly like a Kaleidoscope.

Lay Me Down (feat Jodie) - (4:33) 100 BPM
Review: The debut long-one from London low end veteran Seven, this piece of work has been on the cards for a long time, and what a piece of work it is. From the paranoid arpeggios of the opener "Hypnotik" we know we're in for a treat. Each cut adding demonstrative drama from the last, we're teased by the industrial strength bass purrs of "Orbital", we're driven beyond levels of gut-churning hype on "Movie Scene" and taken directly into the heart of the dance on the big drum evangelism of "Future Flamenco" and the slo-mo jungle adventure "From The Sky". Elsewhere vocalists Jodie and Alys Be add a softer, human touch on smouldering cuts such as "Came To Play", "Lay Me Down" and "Resistance". And that's barely the half of it. Truly, Seven showcases exactly how creative and engaging a modern dubstep album can be when cooked by the right sub chef.

Elegy - (5:13) 105 BPM Hot
Review: One of Artikal's firmest faces, here we find Dutch dynamo TMSV stamping hard on the dubstep landscape without wiping so much as a speck of dirt off his kicks. "Jackhammer" lives up to its name with a pernicious percussive pattern that tattoos your inner soul, "Guillotine" slices savagely with a tense string arrangement while "Elegy" palpitates with an emotional series of chord changes and unforgiving atmospheres. Dig deeper for the sub-aquatic slaps and skanks of "Fire Dub" and the powerful, cinematic drama of ideal set-opener "Head For Home". Make yourself at home.

Review: Within the dubstep scene, Taiko has earned his rank as one of the modern front runners of the genre, consistently delivering innovative creations and enthralling compositions wherever he lays his hand. This EP via the guys at Subaltern sees four stunning tracks put forward, starting with the super swingy shuffling drums of 'Wings'. Following this we step into darker territory as 'Trenches' runs wild with sharp drumwork, urgent string themes and catchy synth lines in a call and respond fashion. It then gets even darker as 'The Raid' brings out more chilling string motifs before we finish up with the horn-like lead patterns of 'Mana Pool'.

Invasion Dub - (6:05) 105 BPM
Review: FKOF continue to fire full-pelt into the creative unknown. This time rising German artist Causa is in the driving seat. And he's taking us to the darkest possible destinations. "Dismaying" belies its title in every way as the thunderclap snares shatter and tightly-clipped, reversed-tone percussive elements clatter. "Mighty Dub" plays on similar sounds with a heavier, stampier approach where shiny aluminium designs wobble and falter with trippy effect. Deeper again, "Invasion" boasts an array of trippy moaning processes while "Blaster" swaggers on a woozy skank. Unique and forward-thinking... Just as you'd expect from FatKidOnFire.

Anti-social - (5:27) 105 BPM
Review: Fresh from his recent cameo on Tuba, LA's premier dank scientist steps aboard Distance's trusty Chestplate ship for more deep sea sonics; "Dead Language" is a creeped out slammer with pneumatic drums and some really interesting sample use on the fills. Looking to go darker? Jump straight on "Anti-Social". A real flattener of a track thanks to its incessant kicks and subverted laser gun samples, gloomy ominousness seeps from every element. Finally we hit "Undertone". The intro features more prominent chords and musicality before dropping into a lean, stripped back drum arrangement that's so paranoid it will have you setting up a new neighbourhood watch vigilante splinter group within minutes.

F'n - (2:44) 100 BPM
Review: Sam Bartlett, or simply Samba as he likes to be known, debuted earlier this year on Encrypted Audio, and he's back already with a follow-up for the young, unstoppable Crucial Recordings, the label run by Sleeper. If you haven't heard this guy's tunes yet, then you might be in for something of a startle; moreover, if you thought dubstep was dead, then this dude will make you change that opinion within a matter of bars. The opener "Malignant" unleashes a sequence of eerie bleeps over a foreboding, stop-start rhythm that takes a fresh approach to the genre, with the same going for the relatively more startled and distorted sonic arrangement of "Un". "F'n" feels like the natural third tune to cap this magnetic EP to a close, a strange and twisted concoction of sounds that have been processed to their very limits. Recommended and tipped, yo!

Review: It looks like Locus Sound have done it again as they here present us with a stunning selection from SBK, a producer who is starting to turn heads wherever he goes with his super impactful steppers originals. We can hear a distinct eastern theme running through the heart of this one, kicking off with the eerie string work and distant percussive sprinklings of 'We Are From The Desert', featuring Ourman. Next up, we land amidst the heavy horn stabs and grizzly bass synthesizers of '3 Million Stones', before finding ourselves doused in heat as the warbling bass wriggles of 'Inferno' usher forth. Finally, 'Lead Dem Pace' alongisde Quasar ties the knot on this one, wrapping up another impressive body of work!

Hyroglifics & Deft - "Two For Two" - (3:00) 100 BPM
Review: Two things in life are guaranteed, Critical Music remaining as consistent as ever and Hyroglifics continuing to push the boundaries further than ever though sonically possible. This latest album sees a truly vibrant collection put on display, exploring the farthest stretching reaches of the Hyroglifics sound, from the thumping half-time sweeps of 'Sing To It' alongside Nah Eeto's crispy vocal display, to the sub-smashing LFO crunches of 'Juggin' and more party-driven atmospherics of 'Late Ones'. We see a number of additional vocal appearances across the project, with Yeo Limone, Black Josh, Lyza Jade and Fuex all delivering unique and inspiring performances. With such a wide array of sonic mastery on display, it's difficult to pick favourites, but the sharpened synthesiser twangs of 'Burnt Tongues' and roller-inspired rumbles of 'You Got It' would be two immediate standouts.

Played by: Alert, Otz
Review: There isn't much doubt that Sleeper can take his rightful place as one of dubstep's new-school royalty, and this four track EP alongside the Crucial Recordings gang pretty much sums up why. The title track 'Smoke & Mirrors' is a syncopated madness, focussing on super swingy drum movement whilst pounding subs writhe below and wavy percussive synths float above. From here we move into the similarly swung sounds of 'Greens' and tripletty ball of beautifully arranged distortion entitled 'U Take L's'. We then round off with the incredibly weighty soundscaping of 'Le Goonz'. This one is a monster, from the demonic melodic leads to the irresistible sub movement underneath.

207 - "Japan Digital" - (5:00) 107 BPM

Review: As we rapidly approach the end of a very successful 2018 for dubstep, we have to pay homage to one of the genre's most consistent platforms in Duploc, as they unveil the first edition of their new 'Selects' compilation series. This is a total amalgamation of the darker realms of 140 bass music, with artists such as BunZer0, Khanum, Zygos, 207 and more supplying the selection with some serious fire. For us the total standouts have to include Sweepa's sub warbling epic in 'Morse Code', alongside Juss B's demonic whirlpool of a composition in 'Sandman' and Surreal's uber grizzly 'Omni'.

Sepia & Koma - "Embalment" - (4:49) 103 BPM
Played by: NAZA, Taiko, Tik&Borrow
Review: As one of the real success stories off the last few years, Sepia makes a real statement on his latest EP, courtesy of the legendary UK dubstep imprint: Wheel & Deal UK. With four tracks on display, Sepia shows the full range of his expansive production arsenal, beginning with the soft, emotive chord textures of the title track 'Last Chance Saloon'. Next up we have a more dance floor ready design in 'Kira' which works super catchy breathy melodies together with highly syncopated drum maneuvers and lethal lowered sub bass movements. Following this we roll into a lethal collaboration with Koma by the name of 'Embalment', which works hypnotic chime like arpeggiations together with triplet drum creations whilst the final track strips everything back to pure bass and drum orientated bliss. Excellent work from one of our favourite dubstep designers.

Review: As always with a brand new Deep Dark & Dangerous compilation drop, the team are on absolute fire as they summon the great and good of the dubstep scene together for a frankly outstanding original collection. Celebrating their 100th official release, they impressed with the team sheet from the jump, inviting the likes of Truth, Youngsta, NType, Hypho, Cartridge, Oxossi and a bag of more heavyweight headliners to match. The whole project is stacked, featuring 24 rave-inspired sizzlers, giving us the grittiest and gnarliest of what dubstep has to offer in 2022. For us, despite the overall quality level of this collection being so high, we would point out a few absolute monsters as our highlights, with the horn-driven clunks and warbling LFO switches of 'Mecha' from The Widdler & ColtCuts immediately jumping out, next to the dungeon-ready percussion of Roklem & Sebalo's 'Inner Turmoil' and the eerie melodic mastery of Leon Switch & Widow's 'Fallen Angels'.

Tomorrow - (2:46) 108 BPM
Review: No please, no thank you, no manners: rising Midland merker Sekko fires off a scorching four-tracker for the ever-juicy White Peach crew. Gully-minded grime beats fully-charged and fizzy, each cut is a physical head-roller: the pulsating kick drum rhythm of "No Manners", the theatrical strings and necksnap drums of "Militant", the trapped-out gun-toting iciness of "Boxes", the spacious introspection, wavey melody and elastic bass of "Tomorrow", Sekko's revealing deep layers right here. Hollow Da Don - Bars - (1:21) 106 BPM
Review: It's ten years since grime lynchpin Wiley released his acclaimed debut album, Treadin' On Thin Ice. In the decade since, he's done a lot of growing up, as the thoughtfulness and maturity of many of the lyrics of Snakes & Ladders so adeptly proves. Yet the most startling thing about the Londoner's ninth album is the rawness of the beats, which pop and spit with all the power of his breakthrough singles way back in the early noughties. As a result, Snakes & Ladders is a thrillingly club friendly set, led from the front by recent single "On A Level". There are bangers aplenty, from the exotic surge of "Busy" and shimmering melodies of "Badman", to the sub-bothering wobble of "Flying", a Zdot production featuring additional bars from Chip.

Review: Are crucial the most cutting edge sound in dubstep right about now? They certainly have to stake a claim as they unveil yet another fire indusing four track bundle, including recordings from the likes of TMSV, Van Dam, Causa, Sleeper and Opus. We begin our excavations of this one by looking into the shimmering sub work and moody synths of TMSV & Van Dam's 'Qanum Fodder', before falling into lethal bass rolls of Causa's 'Are We'. Following this, Sleeper comes through in storming form with the subtle beastings of 'Ginger Root', before Opus sends the dance into pandemonium with his super glitchy expanse in 'People'.

Review: The guys at FatKidOnFire make a major step here in tightening their grip around the top plinth of a now crowded dubstep landscape. They do this by bringing a phenomenal four track expanse to the table from the likes of Binary, who certainly doesn't disappoint. We begin with the shifty, unearthly tones and dubstyle delays of 'Cataclysm' and the hellish tripletted rhythmic plays of 'Decoding', before hitting the stuttered drum work and chilling half time percussive stabs on 'Kill You'. The EP rounds off perfectly with a top draw collaboration alongside Ceiva, which goes by the name 'Skeleton Dance', another unpredictable arrangement stuffed full of haunted sub pressure.

Flew - (4:30) 100 BPM
Review: Colorado might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of dark, ominous bass music, but DMVU has got his shit on lock-down! He's back on Deep, Dark & Dangerous with a four-part gunshot spew that'll likely murder any dance floor from here to Aspen. "Fleww" kicks things off with a wonky, mutating bassline that sounds a lot like Coki's music on a heavy dose of LSD, while "Ummm" takes a slower, more ninja-like stance back by the familiar lyrics "..everyday I'm hustlin'". The title tune "Bloccd" is a stealthy, stop-start juke experiment carrying a load of broken drums and slithering swarms of bass frequencies, whereas "15 Signs You Grew Up In Tasmania" is more of a sound collage, straying heavily into hip-hop territories, and it sounds a lot like DMVU is having fun on that ol' MPC.

This is a trend with most certainly continues in style as they bring in Manchester's dub specialist Hypho for a sumptuous four track bonanza. First we look at 'Guillotine' which brings aquatic rhythms together with 8 bit sound design for a exciting outing. Following this, 'Blazed' and 'Narrow' provide more of the same flavours with engulfing subs running riot amidst powerful drumlines. Finally, the unpredictable bass movements and shuffled chops of 'Rotten Milk' finish up the project with a bang, rounding off an impressive body of work.
