Killer Driller
310
Color Blind (feat Rani) - (5:42) 140 BPM
Review: Now this is a very interesting release... Metalheadz have unleashed this with a statement that raises an eyebrow at the dubstep-loving D&B cognoscenti and a reminder that Amit has been bashing out half tempo D&B for nigh-on a decade now. These two dubby joints prove his skills in the area, and tick completely different boxes in the process. "Killer Driller" punches with a gritty, tonked up Massive Attack / Tricky style skank and vocals spat by the very Devil himself while "Color Blind" is a much more melancholic love affair with traditional dub. A noteworthy move by D&B dons Metalheadz, and a killer message (literally).

To Have & Have Not
311
Jubei - "The Moment" (feat Flowdan) - (4:15) 140 BPM
Review: Prepping us for his debut album of the same name, "To Have & Have Not" showcases D&B mainstay Jubei with real promise and menace. "The Moment" sees Jubei at his grimiest. Operating on a mean halfstep swagger, he's provided the perfect bed for Roll Deep founder Flowdan to tell a dark tale of gangland ego-trips. "Tip The Scales" features the equally distinctive vocalist MC DRS; whispering his warnings over a sharp steppy beat, he's the ideal MC for Jubei's stark riddim precision. Two sides, two vibes - if this is anything to go by, the album is going to be incredible.

Review: Championed by the likes of Northern Lights and Drumsound & Bassline Smith, it looks like North Base are about to enjoy their breakthrough moment with this wild homage to the piano-splashing classic by Degrees Of Motion. With belted vocals and a precision-tuned bassline, it's the ideal balance of musicality and pure muscle. For something a little grittier head to the drumstep remix. For something a little more breakbeaty and piano-flavoured head to the 140 remix. For something little more swaggering and future-gazing, head for the Rollers mix. Massive; this shines in every way.

What You Gonna Do - (4:45) 140 BPM
Before The Storm - (5:42) 140 BPM
Review: Production-wise 2012 was a quieter year for the once-ubiquitous Bar 9 boys, but it seems they're back. And they're at their most bombastic. "What You Gonna Do" (a rhetorical question, by the way) is a layered tease-up that builds and builds with glitch and savage grace. "Before The Storm" adds a head-turning 4/4 to halfstep vibe as we rock and sway from woozy piano massages to crazed warped riffery. Massive.

Fright Night - (4:20) 140 BPM Hot
Played by: North Base
Review: New State reach their 65th release with this massive double header from up and coming Manchester crew North Base. Having remixed the likes of Ms Dynamite, Kele Le Roc and Virus Syndicate, they are fast becoming a name to watch. "Fright Night" pitches somewhere between dubstep, jungle and drum and bass with bouncing breaks, rave stabs and an old skool sensibility, while "Hallow 808" rides in on a darker tip with 808 subs and rolling amens. Highly recommended.

Review: The latest instalment of Modeselektor's peerless 50 Weapons project sees two US producers going head to head on this seventh single. LA's Elan lays down some sparkling instrumental hip-hop, in the vein of his previous Mdslktr-approved "Pussy Posse" track, but this time the beats are slower and raw, while the melodies come via some brilliantly wonky chords and gorgeous floating pads. FaltyDL however continues his recent run of NYC-meets-LDN future garage, with "Large Flash" boasting some seriously impressive snares and heavy subs a la SBTRKT or Bok Bok. Two more highly essential tunes.

Louder (feat Flowdan) - (3:27) 141 BPM Hot
Review: Dropping a searing package of badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Step In (feat Foreign Beggars -Tha Trickaz remix) - (4:45) 140 BPM
Review: Badman flavours are the order of the day as Kentaro shares more smashers from his Contrast album. The Trickaz take on the challenge of "Step In". Fronted by the Foreign Beggars, the original is a hard track to beat. But if anyone can do it, it's these exciting new faces. Snarling with a savage electro flavour, this is next gen dubstep with added hype. "North South East West" finishes the set in two different guises. Tha New Team gets lively with a half-step screamer while Taiki and Nulight subvert proceedings with a sexy deep garage twist. Both are exemplary lessons in the dark art of remixology.

Depth Perception - (4:10) 147 BPM
Review: Following his "Moonbeam Rider" single for Nina Tune, this new instrumental EP from Greg Feldwick's alias finds the UK producer straddling the gaps between bass music and broken beat/nu-jazz perfectly. The opening title tune is a slow and spacey delight, complete with slowly unfurling arpeggios and some truly unexpected static gaps. "Whirlpool" follows a similarly astral path, while the beatless and cinematic "Dragon Drums" and the Boards of Canada-esque "Mist" are both future classic Ninja Tune cuts.

Review: New out on Ninja Tune, Philadelphia producer Starkey teams up with MC cartel Central Spillz for this feisty new release. Having previously dropped tunes for Planet Mu, Trouble & Bass and Keysound, Starkey is well versed in laying down messed-up bass beats, and on this remixed version of "Open The Pod Bay Doors", he mixes live sounding, grime-structured percussion around multi-octave bass power while the UK rappers simply tear up all mics in sight. A canny, US take on grimey dubstep styles.

Review: Kevin "The Bug" Martin and Dylan "Earth" Carlson have finally teamed up for a collaborative release on the UK's mighty Ninja Tune. To be honest, both the artists and the label have all achieved institutional status by now, so you know its highly recommended from the onset. Each artist has been involved in many scenes and genres over the years, ranging from ambient metal to minimal drones and experimental two-step and "Boa" is exactly that, a weird and wonderful mixture of styles and influences. "Boa" and "Cold" share a slow tempo and a set of heavy, metallic guitars weaving over desolate soundscapes and rattling percussion. This is cinematic music to say the least.

Review: It's been some six years since renowned misery guys Kevin Martin won plaudits for London Zoo, a typically dark, intense and aggressive full-length that showcased his unique ability to blend dubstep, grime, dancehall and dub techno textures into nightmarish new shapes. Angels & Devils, his belated follow-up, is intriguingly different. While the second half of the set is blessed with plenty of robust, floor-friendly riddims (each blessed with vocals from a range of impressive collaborators), the first half is an altogether more downbeat affair. In fact, it's these moments - the droning, dub-inflected ambience of "Pandi" and the bluesy, soundscape dub-soul of "Save Me" - that hit home hardest.

Review: This EP finds Kevin Martin zooming in on some of the themes of Angels & Demons, the long awaited new LP from The Bug, naturally showing a diverse approach across the spectrum of his dread-filled half-step swagger. Two versions of "Void" drape themselves across the first side in a heavy-lidded fog of distant melodics, static interference and restrained beat business, while on the flip "Black Wasp" likewise takes two strung out routes through submerged menace and laconic grace. Like a sharp slap about the chops, side three finds Manga spitting out a monolithic grime performance over "Function", while Daddy Freddy is on side four with a perfectly devilish turn on "Blaow".
