Review: Whenever we see the 1985 Music banner sailing into port, we know we are in for a good time, especially when it carries goods of the level of these from VIsages, who continues to impress with another killer 4 track drop. We open up with the title track 'Dol Guldur', a gnarly fusion of metallic bass tones, neurotic drums and spiced up vocals, followed by Snowy's high energy vocal performance on 'Evidently', a serious grimey throwback. Next, the more ethereal vocal slides and mind-melting synth pads of 'Panacea' flip the themes of the EP right on their head, with a killer vocal appearance from Killa P on 'The Most' giving us the final dash of juice to round this EP off in serious style.

Review: Long live team Alpha Pup, an excellently organised project that have moved onto the third edition of their epic '20/20' compilation series, exploring the most lethal reaches of underground bass music. Featuring hard hitting originals from the likes of Ivy Lab, Dismantle, Rocks FOE, Bakey and more, it's clear that the team have gone all out on this collection, with sounds ranging as wide as the hardcore inspired mysticism of 'Naananaana' from Rohaan, to the industrial techno-flavours of Ila Brugal's 'Cynical'. The whole project packs a punch, but our highlights would have to include both the intense metallic madness of Deft's 'OKURTHEEXPERT', alongside Manni Dee's monstrous 'Wet Slide' creation. Top work all around!

Review: The 1985 team have consistently delivered a top notch array of both neurotic D&B flavours and lethal dubstep collections, with this latest offering from Cesco being another great addition to their 140 arm. First up, 'GITP', is an anthemic opener, taking a super catchy vocal line and layering it with silky synthetic magic, before Bidl joins the party on 'Overdue', a behemoth-like bounce through gnarly reeses and fragrant low ends. Next, a more juke-inspired switch up as 'Up The Place' unloads high energy drum rolls and more vocal slices, before Hamdi touches down for a ferocious collaboration in 'Swing King', a final bulbous barge to close things off in style.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: Next up from DJ Physical, a fiery four track display expanding across the new school realms of breakbeat, coming to us courtesy of Unknown To The Unknown. We open up with the heavily arpeggiated synthesiser lines and intense 4x4 drum slaps of 'Red Scarf', followed by a switch up in pacing as the more footwork inspired arrangements of 'Still On A Mission' give us a new combination to enjoy. From here, 'A Little Deeper' focusses on dripping percussion and hardcore low ended drum roles, followed by the spacey chord progressions and moody subs of the title track 'Midnight Marauder'.

Review: Next up from the team over at Off-Licence, a vibrant four track display from the one and only Lokal, showcasing a smokey combination of both hard hitting grime lyricism and experimental 140 production methods. First up, 'Early Morning Tripper' gives a glitchy switcher, tied together with bulbous horn techniques and more goodness from Freddy B, before Noco joins the party on the euphoria-inducing synth slides of 'Who Dis'. Next, 'Talk!' gives us a more trip-hop style slink through blipping instrumentation and choppy drum styles, with 'Havoc' then closing us off with some hard hitting drum & bass flavour to close, giving this collection the perfect finishing move.

Review: Bam! No word, no warning, no hype, no histrionics; just king DRS casually dropped a new album sized mixtape full of brand new originals with artists such as Dogger, Sl8r, Chiccoreli, Zar, Disrupta and Mindstate (to name a few) Loaded with interesting skits and interludes, along with a full mix version, this is DRS at his most wide armed, soulful and vibrant. Juiced up with plenty of fodder for the soulful DJs to spin, but sculpted as a musical experience, this is an amazing deep dive into the deepest corners of Delrokski's soul.

Review: If you don't understand why Dubmatix has been named 'Canada's dread at the controls' by none other than Don Letts, just look at the list of vocalists on board this project... Eek A Mouse, Horace Andy, Tenor Fly, U-Roy and Cornell Campbell. Did someone just say 'legends'? Naturally, the beats back up the headline name-dropping. Stretching from the rugged dubsteppery of "Black Market War Dub" to the more classical, dub positivity of tracks like "Free Up" and "She's In Love", this is a comprehensive picture of dub's many shades AND a great calling card for Canada's 'dread at the controls'.

Responsible for the genre's best parties and home to artists from Swindle to Faze Miyake to Terror Danjah, Butterz are one of the most consistent and creative grime flagbearers of the game. Reading like a who's who in grime (Big Narstie, Skepta, Flowdan, Stormzy, Wiley, D Double E, Sir Spyro, Plastician, Kano, Giggs and loads more) each of the 40 tracks remind us (if we needed reminding) just how well grime has annotated and soundtracked the year. Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: So at this point in time, it's hard to imagine Alix Perez making a stale tune, as he lands here on the wonderful 1985 music for another twisted collection of heaters. We kick this one off with a look at the spooky overtones and warbling synthesizer growls of 'Ravana', before the shivering LFO designs and glitchy melodic plucks of 'Lifeline' stutter into play. Next, 'Post-Mortem' arrives with more lethal reese bass action driving the stripped back drumwork forward in a blaze of system energy, before rounding off with the catchy arpeggiator flexes of 'Ends' alongside Headland. What a project this is!

Review: And so the remix rampage continues... Noisia hit the fourth volume of their 'Resonance' collection with an allstar cast of talents ranging from established pioneers like Futurebound and Audio to younger trailblazers like Ternion Sound and MISSIN. As you'd expect, the vibes hit thick and fast as each remixer brings their best game. Highlights include Gyrofield's haunting, near-medieval twist on 'Banshee', Forbidden Society returning to the collection with a smouldering, swaggering roller, Burr Oak's turbulent happy-slapping tech tear-up of 'Stigma' and MACHINEN's industrial strength take on 'Hand Gestures'. All this and so much more, Noisia manage to whip up world beating albums even after they've split up.

Review: The Vision Recordings crew have once again unearthed a weighty box of gems with this new three tracker, seeing the combined powers of both Machinedrum & Holly for a dive into steppers abandon. We open up with the crunchy synth warbles and unorthodox vocal work of 'Novaform', a truly unique arrangement that packs both a subby gut punch and a midrange hook to match. Next, 'Blueshift' strips the instrumentation back a tad for a more fluttery original, focussing on emotive melodies and clicky percussion, before the sounds of 'Hide Sun' arrive for one final showdown, delivering a choppy, jungle-inspired slammer, doused in euphoric pad textures and tidy sampling for a killer final slap.
