Review: Whenever we see the 1985 Music banner sailing into port, we know we are in for a good time, especially when it carries goods of the level of these from VIsages, who continues to impress with another killer 4 track drop. We open up with the title track 'Dol Guldur', a gnarly fusion of metallic bass tones, neurotic drums and spiced up vocals, followed by Snowy's high energy vocal performance on 'Evidently', a serious grimey throwback. Next, the more ethereal vocal slides and mind-melting synth pads of 'Panacea' flip the themes of the EP right on their head, with a killer vocal appearance from Killa P on 'The Most' giving us the final dash of juice to round this EP off in serious style.

Review: The 1985 team have consistently delivered a top notch array of both neurotic D&B flavours and lethal dubstep collections, with this latest offering from Cesco being another great addition to their 140 arm. First up, 'GITP', is an anthemic opener, taking a super catchy vocal line and layering it with silky synthetic magic, before Bidl joins the party on 'Overdue', a behemoth-like bounce through gnarly reeses and fragrant low ends. Next, a more juke-inspired switch up as 'Up The Place' unloads high energy drum rolls and more vocal slices, before Hamdi touches down for a ferocious collaboration in 'Swing King', a final bulbous barge to close things off in style.

Review: Long live team Alpha Pup, an excellently organised project that have moved onto the third edition of their epic '20/20' compilation series, exploring the most lethal reaches of underground bass music. Featuring hard hitting originals from the likes of Ivy Lab, Dismantle, Rocks FOE, Bakey and more, it's clear that the team have gone all out on this collection, with sounds ranging as wide as the hardcore inspired mysticism of 'Naananaana' from Rohaan, to the industrial techno-flavours of Ila Brugal's 'Cynical'. The whole project packs a punch, but our highlights would have to include both the intense metallic madness of Deft's 'OKURTHEEXPERT', alongside Manni Dee's monstrous 'Wet Slide' creation. Top work all around!

Review: Sneaker Social Club unveils Ivy Lab's latest offering deepening the duo's evolution from their drum and bass roots. Comprised of Gove Kidao and Jon Fogel, this Mild EP, born from a purposeful break in 2023 to experiment freely in the studio, presents a potent mix of jungle and drum and bass influences, intertwined with footwork elements and Ivy Lab's unique sound design. Tracks like "Look Away" and "N.V.T 01" showcase their knack for combining rugged bass weight with innovative production techniques, while "Kik Bak" delivers an acutely angled, pitched-up rap attack to further galvanise their radical sound.

As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: Next up from DJ Physical, a fiery four track display expanding across the new school realms of breakbeat, coming to us courtesy of Unknown To The Unknown. We open up with the heavily arpeggiated synthesiser lines and intense 4x4 drum slaps of 'Red Scarf', followed by a switch up in pacing as the more footwork inspired arrangements of 'Still On A Mission' give us a new combination to enjoy. From here, 'A Little Deeper' focusses on dripping percussion and hardcore low ended drum roles, followed by the spacey chord progressions and moody subs of the title track 'Midnight Marauder'.

Review: Next up from the team over at Off-Licence, a vibrant four track display from the one and only Lokal, showcasing a smokey combination of both hard hitting grime lyricism and experimental 140 production methods. First up, 'Early Morning Tripper' gives a glitchy switcher, tied together with bulbous horn techniques and more goodness from Freddy B, before Noco joins the party on the euphoria-inducing synth slides of 'Who Dis'. Next, 'Talk!' gives us a more trip-hop style slink through blipping instrumentation and choppy drum styles, with 'Havoc' then closing us off with some hard hitting drum & bass flavour to close, giving this collection the perfect finishing move.

Review: Marking a new era for DNO Records, PLLFRY introduces the Overexciting EP, a five-track release brimming with raucous halftime beats and collaborations with vocalists NST and Genoveva. Thriving on iron-clad percussion and a blend of mangled sonic futurism, yet it consistently centred around a powerful, unfiltered bass presence - tracks like "Demolition" and "Collapse Of The System" live up to their names, delivering destructive basslines and chaotic beats that shatter the norm. The title track showcases a nuanced contrast, with a serpent-like bassline, ethereal vocals from Genoveva, and intricate hi-hats. "Water Fire" takes the intensity further with an undulating low-end, metallic melodies, and a slippery vocal contribution from NST. The bonus track "Old School" pays homage to hip-hop's golden age, infusing a boom bap beat with machine glitches and acid pellets. DNO knows.

Review: If you don't understand why Dubmatix has been named 'Canada's dread at the controls' by none other than Don Letts, just look at the list of vocalists on board this project... Eek A Mouse, Horace Andy, Tenor Fly, U-Roy and Cornell Campbell. Did someone just say 'legends'? Naturally, the beats back up the headline name-dropping. Stretching from the rugged dubsteppery of "Black Market War Dub" to the more classical, dub positivity of tracks like "Free Up" and "She's In Love", this is a comprehensive picture of dub's many shades AND a great calling card for Canada's 'dread at the controls'.

Review: If any label is going to wrap up one of grime's biggest years to date, it's Butterz. Responsible for the genre's best parties and home to artists from Swindle to Faze Miyake to Terror Danjah, Butterz are one of the most consistent and creative grime flagbearers of the game. Reading like a who's who in grime (Big Narstie, Skepta, Flowdan, Stormzy, Wiley, D Double E, Sir Spyro, Plastician, Kano, Giggs and loads more) each of the 40 tracks remind us (if we needed reminding) just how well grime has annotated and soundtracked the year. Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: It's not outlandish to suggest that a collaborative display from both Alix Perez and Headland, two of the most innovative in the game, would cause a serious riot. Across eight tracks of genuine sonic wizardry, we explore the deepest and darkest realms of electronic sound design, from the murky synthesiser players of both 'Mirage' Parts 1 & 2, alongside the earth-shattering sub squelches of 'Shuriken' and mind-numbing rhythmic approach of '1024'. It's a truly wondrous collection, pushing the boundaries of sound design to entirely new realms, with our highlights including the uniquely designed flutters of 'Coco', the gut punching subs of 'Elk's Point', the unique rhythmic jolts of 'Hellion' and of course 'The Grove' in all of it's breathy beauty.

Review: As one of the most undeniably consistent dubstep imprints of 2022, we are thrilled to see the Infernal Sounds crew turning the heat up right from the start of the year as they deliver a mega compilation project, featuring 17 absolute sizzlers. The range that Infernal Sounds are able to deliver is very apparent across this project from start to finish, from the otherworldly chord shimmers of Conzi's 'Drift' to the more sublow synthesiser sweeps of 'Executioner' from Blottarz and all the way back to the intricate percussive mastery of Bisweed's 'By My Side'. It's an all star cast, with the likes of Mistah, Substrada, Dayzero, Gnesha, Kodama and more all providing heavy hitters, with our favourites including E S P's super spooky whirlpool entitled 'Open Mind', next to Saraphim's super smooth 'Cool Box' original.

Review: Russian ragamuffinski Steppa Style bumps up to Totally Dubwise with the follow-up to 2014's still-toasty See The World. Once again it's a vibrant church that's all rooted by reggae and digidub cornerstones. From the rising skanks and gutsy harmonis of "Musical Murder" to the bouncy soundsystem-primed bass of "Ready We Ready" via the rougher rapid-fire flow of "Road", he sets the scene perfect for an immense jungle skank-out for the second half of the album: the savage spitfire feels of "Raggamuffinski", the Aphordite style jumps of "Rolling Stone" and the Chopstickesque party ragga jam "Step Aside" The vibey list goes on and on.

Review: Following dubstep's revival, we are finding a lot of producers leaping at the opportunity to express themselves within the original digital dub stylee, a theme that Dub Communication have been overseeing with masterful precision. They here unveil a tasty new six track selection, seeing Dubothesis cut the cord on the eerie reverberations of 'King Selassie Calling', followed by the mindful drum marches of Haji Sound's 'Herbal Smoke' and the more system-inspired 'Kosmos Dub' from Mystic Fyah'. From here we stroll into the incredible dubwise atmosphere of Skruff's 'Bad Dub', chased up by the more digi-dub themes of 'Moonrocks' from SmallTown Dubz before 3Voice and Wosui conclude the tracklisting with the delicious sound design of 'Night Light Dub', featuring additional work from Cynic Al.
