Cesco & Bidl - "Overdue" - (4:30) 140 BPM
Up The Place - (4:29) 80 BPM
Cesco & Hamdi - "Swing King" - (4:29) 140 BPM
Review: The 1985 team have consistently delivered a top notch array of both neurotic D&B flavours and lethal dubstep collections, with this latest offering from Cesco being another great addition to their 140 arm. First up, 'GITP', is an anthemic opener, taking a super catchy vocal line and layering it with silky synthetic magic, before Bidl joins the party on 'Overdue', a behemoth-like bounce through gnarly reeses and fragrant low ends. Next, a more juke-inspired switch up as 'Up The Place' unloads high energy drum rolls and more vocal slices, before Hamdi touches down for a ferocious collaboration in 'Swing King', a final bulbous barge to close things off in style.

Hypho - "Akanum" - (3:46) 93 BPM
Chef Boyarbeatz - "SELECTAH" - (4:27) 70 BPM Hot
Review: The run that the Manuka brand has been on over the last 2 years has been nothing short of excellent, with this latest offering from head honcho: Hypho and the explosive production techniques of Chef Boyarbeatz giving us three new spicy rollers. First up, an absolute devastator of an anthem from the pair as 'Smokers Club' sees a lethal combination of writhing LFO sweeps and hard hitting sublines deployed for a legendary combination. Next, Hypho steps out on solo duty for the warbling swampy subs of 'Akanum', giving us a slightly different feeling, before the dungeon-heavy epic of 'SELECTAH' sees Chef Boyarbeatz deliver a spine-tingling display. Very tidy indeed.

Review: In the wake of all this grime business blowing up at the moment, it seems an apt time be delving into this compilation of early Plastician jams from a time before Mr Hawtin forced him to change his name. Coming at the emergence of dubstep when it was also called sublow or sometimes just grime, it's a thrilling reminder of the possibilities that were opening up in gritty urban electronic music at the time. With a primal approach and that icy minimalism that made the early material so exciting, there's not a duff moment in earshot across the whopping 21 tracks included here, and they've all been remastered for maximum contemporary impact. What more could a bass lover ask for?

Review: As always with Neil Landstrumm, we are about to take a dive into the widened realms of electronic creativity, with this new LP giving us 10 unique adventures to dive head first into. From the super moogy synth work of the introductory 'The 93 Wanabe' to the super abstract pad and percussive combos of 'DROOP' and mind-melting sub squeals of 'POPCORN', it's safe to say there wouldn't be a box big enough anywhere to confine this project into. Our standouts across the full ten tracks include both the shuffling, garage-like drum arrangements and somewhat-spicy vocal samples of 'BRIAN HARV 140' and of course the hypnotic melodies and warping bass sweeps of 'After XL'. Top work once again from a true electronic music legend.

8
Novaform - (3:00) 140 BPM Hot
Blueshift - (3:15) 136 BPM
Hide Sun - (2:56) 58 BPM
Review: The Vision Recordings crew have once again unearthed a weighty box of gems with this new three tracker, seeing the combined powers of both Machinedrum & Holly for a dive into steppers abandon. We open up with the crunchy synth warbles and unorthodox vocal work of 'Novaform', a truly unique arrangement that packs both a subby gut punch and a midrange hook to match. Next, 'Blueshift' strips the instrumentation back a tad for a more fluttery original, focussing on emotive melodies and clicky percussion, before the sounds of 'Hide Sun' arrive for one final showdown, delivering a choppy, jungle-inspired slammer, doused in euphoric pad textures and tidy sampling for a killer final slap. Awesome work

I Bet - (5:28) 132 BPM
Burner - (5:25) 132 BPM
Review: The team over at Lost City Archive really do know how to polish a box of gems, with this latest four track offering from MBERE representing a very forward thinking look at the rapidly rising genre of new school breaks. We open up with '96' flex, a monstrous combination of booming 808 pulses, choppy drum doubles and catchy breaks, followed by the more moody sub designs and distant vocal delays of 'Pressure'. The vibe then switches to a more UKG-sentric feel as 'moody bass tints and floating backing vocals match up with a real spooky feel, before 'Burner' closes the EP out in warbling style.

Lamont - "Death Slide" (feat Grim Sickers - dub) - (4:29) 64 BPM
Lamont - "In The Field" (feat Nico Lindsay) - (3:52) 133 BPM Hot
Lamont - "In The Field" (feat Nico Lindsay - Devil mix) - (3:20) 133 BPM
Review: It has only taken Lamont two years to climb the ladder of success, a successful run of EP's which have no taken him to the the excellent Keysound, via the large and in charge Computer Integrated Audio. There's two mixes to "Death Slide", the first featuring the vocals of Grim Sickers, and it can only be described as being a leftfield UK hip hop tune; the dub mix strips it all back to lazy, staggering groove with a minimal edge. "In The Field" carries on the grime vibe thanks to Nico Lindsay's cold rhymes, but the beat is even more twisted, driven even further out into space; the Devil mix, as the name suggests, is nothing short of far-out.

Pilo - "XIVA" - (4:16) 135 BPM
Review: Long live team Alpha Pup, an excellently organised project that have moved onto the third edition of their epic '20/20' compilation series, exploring the most lethal reaches of underground bass music. Featuring hard hitting originals from the likes of Ivy Lab, Dismantle, Rocks FOE, Bakey and more, it's clear that the team have gone all out on this collection, with sounds ranging as wide as the hardcore inspired mysticism of 'Naananaana' from Rohaan, to the industrial techno-flavours of Ila Brugal's 'Cynical'. The whole project packs a punch, but our highlights would have to include both the intense metallic madness of Deft's 'OKURTHEEXPERT', alongside Manni Dee's monstrous 'Wet Slide' creation. Top work all around!

Review: It's always exciting to see a new drop from Cimm, a producer who has been on an absolute spree for the last couple of years, with this latest offering being another box of dubwise wizardry. We open up with the chanted vocal backdrops and sweeping sub textures of 'Coast 2 Coast', a mind-bending title track that packs a hell of a punch. Next, Cimm players further into those initial vocal themes as choppy slices are slapped across the more minimal, aquatic pads of 'Scorpion Death Lock', with 'Make Up Your Mind' then upping the energy with mystic melodies and moody basslines to match. Finally, Sumgii jumps on board for a bubbling display on 'Cabs Here', giving us a soft landing to close things off.

Review: Well hello there Shades, it's been a while... Understandable, really, considering both Perez and Eprom's solo careers. And considering the insane levels of production at play. Weirded-out vibes and twisted designs like this don't appear from nowhere - these guys are pushing each other to the limit here. It's clear from the updated version of their 2015 entry track "Chiron" as the textures are even more unique and the bass even more sabre-toothed. Elsewhere "Sleaze" is a gritty, oily, 23rd century robot porn-flick soundtrack, "Creeper" is the sound of machine revolting in harmony while "K.S.P" takes all those dangerous, loin-girding sounds that first scared the dickens out of you when you first heard jungle as a kid and turbo-charges them with 21st century evil. Outstanding and untouchable.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: The Artikal team have unearthed a worldy here as Leo Cap arrives in sizzling fashion, bringing us a multi-genre fusion of dancefloor delights. We open up with 'I Feel Good', a fragrant title track, linking together the intense rhythms of UKG with a hard hitting slap of grizzly bass notation, topped with choppy vocal expression, before 'Surround Me' lets loose a scintillating display of electrifying synthesiser sweeps. From here 'So Damn Beat' ups the heat even further as a stripped back drum set plays host to one of the angriest basslines we've heard in years, with the popping percussive melodies and skippy rhythmic textures of 'Free Your Mind' then giving us a cosy landing zone, rounding off this very impressive body of work in serious style.

Review: In a crowded dubstep and grime scene, there really is something that stands out about the consistency of Zha's White Peach imprint, who have struck gold again here with an expertly crafted four track masterclass from Hebbe. We begin with the soothing aquatic melodies and hypnotic sub pressure of the title track '3 Tabs' before landing on the darkened structure and haunting overtones of 'Appropriation'. Next we step into the super wingy excitement of 'IPA' which is driven by grizzly lead bass textures, before finishing up the EP with the nostalgic lfo movements and dubwise drum creations of 'Post Modern Dub'.

This project sees him traverse a complete spectrum of electronic music, with a half time dubstep feel being the central yarn in its tapestry. From the distorted utterings of 'Buzzsaw' and funky inspired flavours of 'Gyroscope' to the more soundscape led compositions of 'Entrospect' and 'Ants', this project boasts a wealth of musical expertise, showcasing a depth of dubstep influences and offshoots.

Review: Sentry Records has put together some serious releases over the last few years, showcasing the latest and greatest in dubstep and its surrounding genres. We are therefore introduced to and absolutely storming compilation here as we reel off bangers from the likes of dubstep legends such as Caspa, Truth, Sukh Knight, Youngsta and more. For us, the highlights of this incredible compilation are quite clear, kicking off with the stunning production of 'Judas' from Nomine, who brings forward his uniquely metallic sound design on mass. Another absolute heater we couldn't forget is the spooky yet satisfying 'Crocodile' from Dayzero, packed with wicked drum flavours and haunted overtones.

Review: After a very lucrative last twelve months for the In:Flux Audio camp, we are pleased to see them start to round out the year in style as they present us with this collection from J Kong. We begin with the title track 'Nonsense', an out-there amalgamation of dubstep and breaks, pushing unpredictable drum cuts with warbling bass tones and vocal hits. Next up we have the punchy bass grinds of 'Ruthless', which follows by example, being lashed with original sound design. On remix Duty, J69 and Inner Realm get busy on their intuitive recreations of 'Nonsense', with Dr Oscillator following up in style with his weighty rethink of 'Ruthless'.

Review: Seeing Numa Crew make a return is always a thing of joy, especially when they are making that return alongside such illustrious companies, namely Killa P and Long Range. All entities combine within a seriously explosive A-side, which taking the title 'Bun Dem Down', delivers a gut punch of subby synth switchups and metallic drum crashes, kicking off this brand System Music drop with a serious amount of style. On the flip, 'Masai Duty' takes the project in an entirely different direction, focussing on ear-catching vocal chants and bouncy rhythms to match, giving us two very different sides of the Numa Crew coin. Very tidy indeed!

Review: As far as legends go in grime, there really aren't many producer/DJ's that have given as much as Spooky over the years. This second edition of his 'Ghost Mode' series is a perfect example of why, as he unleashes a heavyweight array of 16 potent grime missiles. The energy levels are high regardless of style, as we can hear between the more melodic structures of both 'Coral Reef' and 'Digital Pirate', alongside the more classic grimey chops of 'Rotten Salsa' and 'Parasite'. There are a couple of clear standouts, including the high energy rhythmic switches of 'Gully Skank' and thick harmonies of 'Coral Reef'. Sumptuous work from the Spartan as per!

Review: If you're spitting bars right now, there's only one man you want to go to...Silencer, once again is going in hard with his 6 track EP on his very own Teddy Music. As you may have been able to gage from the apt name, 'Tedskimo' is heavily influenced from the days of grime past, particularly Wiley's most celebrated era, taking the classic bouncing sound and added a darker tinge. 'Deep' is on a tip of complex simplicity with the main emphasis of the track surrounding the sub, until that sinister horror film twinkle comes in. 'Crush' uses intense layers of strings which sound as though they've been plucked form a orchestra, while 'On The Run' mixes creepy ghoulish howls with a sprinkling of sparking magic sand, and ends up sounding like something Ludacris would jump on. The last two tracks 'Not For The TV' and 'Licence' have more of an America swag to them, the former, slower and drawing influence form early 2000's Atlanta and the latter adding trap type shuffles and shakers.

Review: Moody electronic outsider Sorrow returns on his own Shinigrim label with two new nuggets, a pair of masterfully executed garage twisters for the deeper sets. "Qualm" contains that glitchy drum pattern we all love so much, surrounded by mystical chords and a whole load of strangled bass, of course. "Iscariot" is deeper, dubbier, and reminiscent of early Hotflush Recordings material. Flashy.

Review: It's the third chapter of the Boxed series, which means new and refreshing bass cuts from a whole selection of new faces on the block. We know little about these youngsters, so let's just cut to the chase: Mr Mitch's "Friend Of Mine" flutters its half-step beats to a vast, distorted pool of sonics and vocal samples; "Mashman pt2" by As If Kid goes for a single-minded grime approach thanks to its traditional, London swamp-bass; JT The Goon delivers noxious levels of low frequencies around the tune's Eastern tones; Sirpixalot ties this episode of Boxed off with the pacman-grime vibes of "All In One VIP". Heavy gear.

Review: As you can imagine, Hyroglifics landing on Critical Music for a full three track display is always going to cause somewhat of a ruckus. This collection is a perfect example of understanding the room as the chiming vocal repetition and tweaking 140 synthetics of 'Sing To It' open us up with a fiery feeling of originality. From here, Deft arrives for a slightly quicker paced episode as the crunching synthesiser pounds and the bubbling subs of 'Two For Two' give us another gutpunching original. Finally, we skip back into the 170's with 'Albany Road', a synthetic slapper, switching and alternating between gnarly bass textures and well processed drum punches, giving us the perfect closer to this already intense collection.

Review: Based in Portland, futuristic bass music producer Eprom teams up with 1985 music for his brand new EP entitled 'Drone Warfare'. With early support from Mixmag, this EP takes a unique approach to underground electronic music in general, focussing on the unpredictability of industrial musical elements. The title track is a rollercoaster, with incredible layers of artistic sound design coupled with subtle rhythmic elements and creepy atmospherics. Next up 'Raw Data' takes a more hip hop approach with industrial percussion running wild. It gets even cooler with 'Oskana' which brings even more twisted synthesis to the table, leading perfectly into the syncopated genius of the final track 'Full Mag'.

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: Bonjour! Monty finally delivers his debut artist album and it's an absolute gem from start to finish. Featuring the many cuts he's been teasing over the last few months ('Hardware', 'Vibin' etc) the album takes a deep dive into every sound on the young Frenchman's palette. Flexing from the gnarled 140 bubbles and bumps of 'Dreamer' (with 1985 bossman Alix Perez himself) and the spacey garage vibes of 'Walking Home' to the soulful roll of 'Birdland' (with fellow Toulousian Redeyes) and the electroid night creeping title track, this is the full Monty on levels we've never seen before. Bass music across the whole menu, it's one of those rare LPs that will both slay a club and work well in any other listening scenario. Bonsoir!

Review: Now it's been a brief minute since we last took in a brand new drop from Drone, one of the finest 140 and grime producers to emerge out of Bristol in recent times. This brand new drop on 1985 music however sees him return to that fantastic form of old, kicking off firstly with the title track 'Evil Sky', a demonic, slightly slowed roller, jam packed with grizzly bass energy from start to finish. Next, the minimal yet potent sub-splashes of 'Back & Forth' are chased up by the dungeon-ready percussive twangs of 'M416' and system-busting bass growls of 'Disturbed' for good measure. Finally, the eerie, bitcrushed landscapes of 'Reptar's Revenge' sees the EP round off with an evil twist, putting the finishing touches on an exceptional body of work.

Review: So at this point in time, it's hard to imagine Alix Perez making a stale tune, as he lands here on the wonderful 1985 music for another twisted collection of heaters. We kick this one off with a look at the spooky overtones and warbling synthesizer growls of 'Ravana', before the shivering LFO designs and glitchy melodic plucks of 'Lifeline' stutter into play. Next, 'Post-Mortem' arrives with more lethal reese bass action driving the stripped back drumwork forward in a blaze of system energy, before rounding off with the catchy arpeggiator flexes of 'Ends' alongside Headland. Dangerous Sound - (2:49) 120 BPM
Review: Eprom is not only a close production partner of Alix Perez, but he's a reliable source of slower yet possibly even heavier sounds for his label 1985 Music. 'Dangerous Sound' gives you a hint what it's about from the name, and this tune is a halftime monster of frightening proportions, a glitched out and messed up number that has one goal; to blow up the dance. Basslines cut through each other, synths overheat and the overall engineering is on another level; typical Eprom and vintage 1985.

Review: As an imprint, 1985 have always championed the weird and wonderful, which is why this fabulous new four track adventure from Tsuruda fits so perfectly. We begin our treacherous tale with 'Fugitive', which sees the man himself, Mr Alix Perez arrive on collaborative duty, supplying us with a truly magnificent journey through syncopated rhythm and synthetic action. Next, 'Kaioh' once again throws us wonky drum arrangements and other-worldy soundscaping, drawing us in with some fantastic compositional value, before the creeping melodic manoeuvres and grizzly low-ended writhes of 'Out Of Pocket' launch themselves forward. We then dive down a whole new hole of sonic depravity, as the gut-wrenching synth swipes of 'Migi' provide us with a suitably eye-opening outro. What a project it is!

Review: When it comes to underground dance music, there are few outposts of creativity that are boasting as high a rate of success as Alix Perez's '1985'. We are blessed to take a look into a window of that creativity with this monstrous new collection of sonic sizzlers as Shades, Alix himself and Eprom join forces for the explosive 'From A Vein' album project. This is a true showcase of mastery in our eyes, from the sub-rattling drones of 'Into Stone' to the super electronic syncopation of 'As Wax By Seal' and acidic arpeggios of 'Deceitful Ways'. We are thrown in about 1000 different directions over the course of this 14 track masterclass, with our favourite creations having to include the remarkably chirpy 'Purification' alongside Gaslamp killer, exploring organic drum breaks and super digitised basslines, next to satanic melodic sweeps of 'Sub Noctem' and unpredictable metallic soundscapes of 'Immortals', welcoming MC GQ into the fold at the same time. Outstanding!

Across eight tracks of genuine sonic wizardry, we explore the deepest and darkest realms of electronic sound design, from the murky synthesiser players of both 'Mirage' Parts 1 & 2, alongside the earth-shattering sub squelches of 'Shuriken' and mind-numbing rhythmic approach of '1024'. It's a truly wondrous collection, pushing the boundaries of sound design to entirely new realms, with our highlights including the uniquely designed flutters of 'Coco', the gut punching subs of 'Elk's Point', the unique rhythmic jolts of 'Hellion' and of course 'The Grove' in all of it's breathy beauty.

This latest project on 1985 music is the perfect showcase of just how good it can be, kicking off with the eerie atmospheric sweeps and gnarly bass excursions of the title track 'Last Rites'. Next, the engulfing subs and classic vocal fx sampling of 'Deep Six' burst onto the scene before the stripped back bass tones and impactful reverberations of 'Spooked' touch down. The project is rounded off with a dive into 'Melodrama', a track teetering with emotive energy and rolling sub tones, driven by it's unique, Burial-like lead vocal line.
