Review: Breaking through on to DJ Die's Gutterfunk label are the hyper-fresh sounds of Yung.Raj, a beatboxing synth chemist to emerge from the sub rosa of India's beat scene. Based out of Hyderabad, Yung.Raj's music had made it onto a few hyped mixtapes (including DJ Die) which now lends itself to a full release on the Bristol label (following Addison Groove and Nuff Pedals). Arriving at five-tracks large, Yung.Raj pays homage to the woozy, lo-fi and crackley sounds that his home city might share with the neighbourhoods of LA. Sultry rhodes and summery vibes shine through in "Stormy Monday" and the title track, with more euphoric, beat centric and experimental funk gettin' down in "Reality Sandwich" and "Cant U C". With an additional downtempo jamsto boot in "Oofie", Yung.Raj's soundworld ain't dead but kickin'.

Review: After releasing a wealth of EPs since making his debut in 2020, Malik Kassim is ready to unleash his first album, 'Straight Foxin', for the constantly inspiring Wolf Music Reordings. Framed as a kind of mixtape, with head-nodding interludes sitting side by side with club cuts, the 14-track set features a wealth of appearances from horn player Mauricesax, as well as collaborations with Bezzix (see the deep dancefloor jazz of 'Be Someone' and the organic deep jazz house of 'New Cribs'), Passion Deez (the skittish, uptempo deep house-goes-ghetto house warmth of 'Kush Love') and 'Nephews' (the deep, Bukem-influenced D&B flex of 'Bad Knees'). Throughout, Kassim offers a near perfect blend of dusty instrumental hip-hop, nu-jazz and the deepest and warmest of house grooves. Recommended!

None Of Dem - (4:03) 117 BPM
Played by: Bluntskull
Review: With loping dancehall funk and autotuned reggae vibes, this single from Think Tonk and General Mikey is the perfect envelope of music for carnival season. The weather is improving and the lockdown restrictions are easing, and these two have roped in two remixers to beef up an already perfect original. 'None of Dem' is legitimate dancehall, full of integrity and grounded in the partyland ethos that sees bashment, reggae and dub meet in a technicolour explosion of good vibes. Riddim Punks toughens things up with a drum & bass flip, whilst Red Eye Hifi lays out the kicks in an even harder rendition that crosses genre boundaries with ease. Lovely stuff.

NEW YORKS FINEST VIP - (3:49) 110 BPM
Played by: Big Dope P
Review: Emerging back in 2014 for pioneering German label Project Mooncircle, Yip Wong aka Deft, later hooked up with 20/20 London for a trilogy of releases that culminated in Deft's 2019 debut album Cracks. Exploding into 2020 furthermore, Deft arrives on the newly established Hooversound Recordings for its second release. A booming and bombastic four-track exploding from all sides, this is serious stuff; from the epic orchestral strings and wiley flexin vocals of "ESKILUSIVE" to the snapping, future Detroit electro of "BURNA". Frenetic rhythms with heavy hitting staccato beats conjure up a storm of roughneck percussion in "NEW YORKS FINEST VIP" with a funkier, more liquid dubstep number landing firm in "KOOVER IN '92". Relentless and uncompromising club music. TIP.

Let I Go (feat Anthony Joseph - Clap Clap remix) - (4:14) 114 BPM
Kamakumba (Simbad dub) - (5:24) 118 BPM Hot
Review: Mop Mop's voodoo jazz island concept undergoes a huge 15-part reconstruction process from artists vast and varied. Like the original album itself, the energy and pace flickers intemperately from euphoric steel drum emotional meltdowns (Simbad's dub of "Kamakumba") to off-beat new jazz showdowns (SoulParlor's remix of "Heritage") to crazed frenetic voodoo footwork fusion (Clap Clap's remix of "Let I Go"). Yet as disparate and disjointed as some of these sound, each reversion relates to the last with the same creative sense of subversive consistency as the original album. Welcome to Isle Of Magic - you know there's no return, right?

Baby Love (Kate NV remix) - (4:41) 118 BPM
Review: Following the artist's All The Time album (2020), her third on Hyperdub since 2013's breakout Pull My Hair Back, Hyperdub compiles a 'mixtape' of remixes from seven artists Lanza herself would love to rework her latest work. Two UK Hyperdub artists make the cut in Proc Fiskal's deconstructed breakdown of "Lick In Heaven" next to the finger clacks and stepping rhythms of Loraine James' version of "Face". Japan's Foodman arrives with a new age exotica remake of "Alexander" alongside the sweet '90s R&B references and themes of Kate NV's mix to "Baby Love". For the dancefloor, DJ Swisha delivers this EP its hit track with a set of well swung, banging hi hats in "All The Time" while something unique, futuristic and high definition comes from Invisible Cloaks. Rough and ready breakbeats from Martyn Bootyspoon too!

Heart Fragments - (1:39) 115 BPM
Review: Heavee, a Queer artist hailing from Chicago, unveils a captivating sonic odyssey with their latest offering, "Unleash," on the renowned Hyperdub label. While their previous "Audio Assault" EP showcased a synth-driven, melodic take on footwork, "Unleash" ventures deeper into a meticulously crafted auditory realm. The album's sound palette is a refreshing amalgamation of spongy textures and zesty citrus tones, interwoven with lush, radiant chord progressions. Heavee's artistry strikes a delicate balance between light and dark, seamlessly transitioning from breezy atmospheres to clinical precision. This duality is a testament to their ability to transcend boundaries, rebuilding footwork's framework and vibe according to their unique creative vision. Rhythmically, "Unleash" is a dance floor-ready masterpiece, utilizing footwork's 160 BPM template as a launchpad for crafting innovative drum sounds that express these intricate rhythms. Heavee draws inspiration from a diverse array of genres, including R&B, rap, jazz, and grime, while subtly incorporating the bittersweet essence of vintage Detroit techno.

Just Like That! - (4:58) 116 BPM
Played by: DJ Mau Mau, Big Dope P, Kisk
Review: Giving Planet Mu a sensational fourth album is Chicago footwork legend RP Boo - signalling his place in the game as Established! (In Europe) It all began back in 2013 with the release of the debut LP, Legacy, and for this most current installment RP looks back to a time when he was inventing Footwork, going out listening to disco and linking with the creators of house such as Paul Johnson (RIP). The album, too, reflects a time when RP Boo started DJing, inspired by the ghetto house and jack tracks that has influenced his music since, next to being a record about black pride, black dignity, black beauty and black creativity. Straight-laced bangers include "Be Of It!" next to the trippy vocal work of "Haters Increase The Heat!" or tribal soundscapes of "Beauty Speak Of Sounds". Classic footwork rhythms and stutters come through tracks like "Now U Know!", with chopped up loops and legendary samples keeping it real in "How 2 Get It Done!". Legendary.

Agzilla - "Compass Rose" - (6:22) 115 BPM
Review: The Defrostatica team have come together to unleash a fabulous display of modern juke-music here as they deliver 21 tracks of pure energy, showcasing the full spectrum of footwork across nearly 100 minutes of original sonic wizardry. From the euphoric, almost arpeggiated melodies of Jont1st's 'Pantone Suplex' and disruptive, industrial-like percussion of DJ YumYum's 'Antigene' to the more junglist inspired drum skips of Arcane's war-like 'Won't Deny' original, this project covers an insane amount of ground. There are a couple of clear highlights for us, the first of which has to be the ethereal vocal masterpiece that is Kiat's 'Transcribe', alongside the acidic drips of Sam Binga's 'Carbob' remix, originally coming from HomeSick. What a collection this is.

Pump Up The Volume - (6:09) 113 BPM Hot
Played by: Arnold & Lane
Review: The Dreamers have seriously hit the jackpot on this one as they invite in the enigmatic sounds of Samurai Breaks for six tracks of pure shellery, encompassing the perfect blend of modern jungle and juke throughout. We kick off with the oldschool bass tones of the title track 'Pump Up The Volume', which is followed by the wicked synthesis of 'No Need' and hardcore influenced sample twist ups of 'Party Starter'. The project then switches into somewhat of a half time funk up as 'Face Down' rolls into view, followed by the pumping 4x4 drum smashes of 'Hood Romance', rounding everything off with the potent sub pressure and catchy vocal slices of 'Attention'.

Galactic Noise - (5:12) 115 BPM
Review: Now, The Untouchables have gained quite the reputation for exploring the more experimental side of bass music, with this latest drop on DNO being a perfect way to showcase their intricate electronic designs in style. We begin with the thunderous drum punches and high tempo rhythms of 'Audacity', before 'Galactic Noise' unleashes an even more display of rapid-fire drum slaps and distant atmospheric pressure. The tribal designs of the title track 'Culture Clash' follow, combining gorgeous percussive lines with smooth processing for a real impactful creation before the shaker-heavy slides of 'Time Travellers' sees out the original tracklisting for this one in style. Finally, the bonus track 'China Haze' gives us one last dash of steppers flavour, working yet more percussive genius into a packed out low end with relative ease. Top stuff from all involved!

ReDraft/HP Ritch/NordOst - "Am I Right" - (3:49) 113 BPM
Review: France's Vandal Ltd are never limited to one genre or style, that's just not the way they operate. Instead, they like to experiment across all corners of the bass spectrum and, from tripped-out d&b to militant dubstep, they always seem to call the shots. This right here is the third instalment of the Grand Royal series, and the cast is clearly up for causing a bit of damage through the lower end of the hertz range. Our picks from the bunch are Signs' gnarly bass stepper "Bluntwraps", Hast's neo-grime escapade called "Badder Than Dem", and Stayhigh's closing tune "Don't Leave Me", a futuristic jungle bullet wrapped in an r&b flow. Another fine Vandal release.

Let Me Get Up - (3:08) 116 BPM
Review: A leading figure and respected elder in the Teklife family, Traxman has waited patiently while releases from young upstarts like Taso and Dj Earl have been enjoyed by footwork lovers all over the world. Now the time has come for him to take centre stage, presenting a collection of new material that demonstrates his mastery of the sound. Cornelius Ferguson is a mainstay of the Chicago underground, with a discography stretching back to the golden era of Dance Mania Records in the '90s. Ghetto house was an important precursor to Footwork, and Ferguson was a key figure during this transition. Highlights on Tekvision include the jagged deepness of "Be Gagen" (featuring DJ Earl), while "Drop It Down" and "Twist The Party Out" pay homage to the origins of juke and footwork.

Fyah Burnin' (Fixate remix) - (5:06) 113 BPM Hot
Review: Beat Machine here return to continue their footwork inspired rampages, doing so with the employing of Pablo Dread, who comes up with this highly experimental 'Burnin' EP. We begin with the junglistic drum rolls and powerful sub pressure of 'Watch It', before we then lean into 'Fyah Burnin', throughout which the jungle themes continue to roll. To follow, we dive into the intense drum clicks and ascending bass tones of 'What's Going On', which rounds up the originals nicely. We are then treated to Fixate's heavyweight D&B rework of 'Fyah Burnin', completely revamping the track into a stripped back roller.

Burial - "Unknown Summer" - (9:40) 117 BPM Hot
Review: Two Legends of the game combine on this latest offering from Fabric Worldwide, as we see the classic link up of Kode9 & Burial once again in action, delivering a simply sumptuous duo of forward thinking originals. First up, Kode9 steps forward with a classic blend of emotional energy, footwork-sounding drum pumps and lucid melodies, wrapped up in jungle-style drum breaks for a truly unique sonic experience. On the flip to this, the immortal Burial steps up for his appearance on 'Unknown Summer'. Now this is a truly special experience, linking up floating chord chimes and tap dancing percussion for a divine drip through atmospheric soundscaping. Simply, awesome!

Darline EP
44
Darline - (5:16) 112 BPM
Review: Alex Godoy has only been making music under the Itoa moniker for a few years, but his own strand of wonky, experimental footwork has caught our ear since his first release on the WW imprint. This time he touches down on Modern Ruin with two-tracker backed by a three-legged remix artillery. "Darline" is a dark and ominous stepper with fast-moving drum typhoons, and "Clap Tone" is a broken arrangement of, well, claps and toms - another wonderfully bouncing floor bomb. The reworks come TS Rapman on "Darline", who twists up the groove to its very limits, while Sun People and Crypticz go for "Clap Tone", the former adding a nice sci-fi layer, and the latter slowing things down to a murky, muddy substance.

Jah-Jo - "WWWTP" - (3:18) 117 BPM
Review: Garneau & Sharkki's label delivers its latest split release. Drawing on diverse influences and sounds, it starts in evocative mode with the rolling breaks and hardcore era vocal samples of Apollo's "Zaptric". Sharkki's "Lust In Translation" also pays tribute to older sources, as the label owner fuses electronic riffs and synth pop vocals. On a more contemporary tip is Liquid Love Angel's "Elevate Me", which features acid lines and robust breaks providing the basis for soulful vocals. CA$TLE's "Back" is also grounded in modern sensibilities as a call and response vocal unfolds over steely drums. Irrespective of the influences at play, each track shares the common trait of being utterly distinctive.

Between Your Legs (Harka remix) - (5:21) 113 BPM Hot
Review: It would appear that Legal has unlocked a secret formula for creativity with this latest four track expanse on Samsara Beats, allowing her to explore and maneuver around some of the most interesting electronic arrangements we have heard in a long time. We begin with the epic, spaceage synthesizer slaps and distant vocal sampling of 'Struggle', before 'Far' unleashes a powerful display of intense half-time drum shakes and powerful reeses below. From here 'Clouds' then adds a dash of spice to the selection, exploring experimental neuro compositional themes, before rounding up on Harka's exceptional rework of 'Between Your Legs', morphing the track into a post-hardcore showdown for one hell of a finale.
