Review: Throughout their decade-long career, Alma Negra has combined their love of disco and deep house with percussion, instrumentation and ideas excavated from African, Caribbean and tropical musical cultures. On this EP, they largely ditch the latter inspirations, instead delivering full-throttle revivalist disco sounds where the Basel-based band's organic instrumentation and vocals combine with colourful synth sounds and heady horns. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'Madrugada', a warming and thickset, subtly deep house-influenced take on the turn-of-the-80s NYC downtown disco-not-disco sound. It comes backed with two revisions - an extra-percussive, dubbed-out Yuksek tweak and the band's own dub disco-goes-deep house 'Dub Mix' - and the riotous, party-starting brilliance of 'Funky Fever'.

Review: It's been slowly drip-fed to us over a 10-month period but now here at last is the full album. On 'Something Like That', Jalapeno bosses Skeewiff celebrate 25 years in the game by paying tribute to some of the music that's inspired them, delivering generally very faithful but also very accomplished reworks of classic tracks by artists ranging from The Winstons and Jimmy Smith to Dick Dale and Herb Alpert. New additions to the roster on this final version include Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made For Walking', Muppets 'Mah Na Mah Na', Mel Tormé's Mod club standard 'Coming Home Baby' and, just to prove they're not taking themselves TOO seriously, Boots Randolph's 'Yakety Sax' - better known to most as the 'Benny Hill' theme.

Review: Buoyed by the success of the Dimitri From Paris remixes of 'Space Talk', Naya Beat has decided to offer up more new reworks of classic cuts from the disco-era catalogue of Indian singer and actress Asha Puthli. Naturally Space Talk gets another tweak - Maurice Fulton delivers a sparse, percussive, dubbed-out take in his inimitable style -but there are plenty of revisions of lesser-celebrated cuts to enjoy. Review: Some unabashedly old skool disco fun and frolics on this five-tracker from Italy's Ministry Of Funk, and his publicity-shy oppo Disco Incorporated. A lively re-edit of MJ's 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' kicks the EP off in party-hearty style; after that, 'Golden Melody' brings very familiar sweeping, soaring strings, 'Back Into Time' will please New Yorkers whether they were born there or are just on an odyssey (hint hint!) while 'High Steppin' and 'Soul Woman' revisit dancefloor staples from Love Unlimited, with the latter throwing in a well-known snatch of Peech Boys vocal for good measure.

Review: irst released on vinyl three years ago and now finally available on digital download, this must-check EP showcases a quartet of killer re-rubs of back catalogue tracks by L.A-based Afro-Latin funk fusionists Jungle Fair. The headline attraction is undoubtedly a pair of reworks by Ashley Beedle and Rob Mello's reborn Black Science Orchestra project - their first revisions for over 15 years. They first serve up a wonderfully percussive, analogue bass-propelled deep Afro-house remix of 2014 cut 'Culebro', before reaching for the delays and delivering an arguably even better dancefloor 'Dub'. You'll also find JKriv re-imagining 2013 single 'Firewalker' as a bumpin' chunk of horn-heavy dub disco, and a cracking Latin disco take on 'Village Hustle' courtesy of Bosq.

Review: If funk and jazz are your thing, don't sleep on this latest missive from Italy's Lego Edit stable, which packs six reworks of vintage cuts both highly familiar and somewhat less so, We start out with the instantly recognisable groove of Kool & The Gang's 'Jungle Boogie', now reinvented as 'Jazz-Ungle', while elsewhere you'll find fresh takes on the Dave Brubeck Quartet's jazz classic 'Take Five' (1959) and Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson's 'It's Your World' (1976). The sources for the other three will have to go sadly unindentified (though those piano licks on 'Jazzy Touch' are annoyingly familiar) but rest assured, this is classy stuff all round.

Review: When Andy Bull AKA Bully Boy launched the Act of Sedition label a couple of years back his aim was to release "the finest 45 edits" on seven-inch double-packs. It's something of a surprise, then, to see the label land on digital download with a sprawling collection of previously vinyl-only reworks and bonus edits. Expect a gloriously vibrant and floor-friendly mixture of gospel-tinged psychedelic soul (Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom"), Clav-happy disco-funk squelch (Disco-Tech's "Assassination"), sweet disco sing-alongs (SanFrankDisko's "Get It Right"), sweaty punk-funk/dub disco heaviness ("Cavern Dance" by V's Edits), high octane disco-camp (Mighty Mouse's cheerfully silly "Got To Have Nothing") and much more besides.

Review: Last heard collaborating with Horse Meat Disco on Glitterbox (2021's 'Sanctuary'), New York collective Phenomenal Handclap Band have decided to showcase their new material on a growing NYC institution: Aaron Dae and J Kriv's popular Razor N Tape imprint. They're in fine form on title track 'Burning Bridges', a squelchy, lyrically bittersweet chunk of disco-boogie revivalism that's as stylish and classy as they come. Norwegian master Prins Thomas provides a pleasingly extended, Clavinet-heavy dancefloor tweak for those that want bolder disco thrills, before the band offers up the psychedelic and Balearic experimentation of 'It Was The Summer'. That, too, comes backed by a fine remix: the squelchy, mind-mangling, TB-303 driven acid thrills of the Each Other mix.

Review: Four typically solid contemporary funk jams here from Sound Exhibitions regular Funk Windows, coming just two weeks after his/her/their last release, the 'Africa Funk' EP. This time out, the Afro stylings are put on a back burner; instead you get the slow-building title cut (which would make a fine set-opener), 'Roller Night' which has a slightly more wonked-out/off-kilter feel, and then 'Bisca' and 'Low Down', both of which up the jazz ante somewhat, the former rocking some fine sax and a cut-up, chipmunk-y vocal while the latter has a similar MO but busts out the flutes. The EP as a whole is a headnodder's delight.

Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Review: Fresh-faced funkateer Manjah steps up to the party-hardy Katakana series, and does so with distinction. It's a game of two halves as the first two cuts are dedicated to chanteuses Smokey Robinson and Donna Hightower. Both powered by swashbuckling 60s funk riffs, these are authentic edits done with true creativity. Later on in the EP we head West to the Caribbean as Manjah gets his skank on with Dancehall Queen. Those with a penchant for Greek taverna flavours should hold tight for the rustic groove on "Orienta Patria". Nice work.

"Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.

Here they return to the former with four cuts that would work on funk-breaks and modern soul floors alike, with the Bobby Saint-vocalled 'Irie' and 'Strip It' rocking a Prince-like vibe, 'Don't Let Go' sporting a full-lunged soul vocal from Justina Lee Brown, and 'Dance' having something of a Smoove & Turrell-like feel. Review: Following in the footsteps of the likes of A Skillz, Beatvandals and The Allergies, Boca 45 helms the latest in Bomb Strikes' 'Funk N' Beats' compilation/mix album series, which has been running since 2013. As ever, Vol 10 features an eclectic, party-hearty mix of funk, hiphop and breaks jams, with wicky-wicky scratch sounds applied liberally. Notable inclusions this time around include two "never heard it like that before" covers of classics from the Spencer Davis Group and (sure to please footy fans) Gala, as well as Western Roots' reggae/ska-infused 'Bogus Daddy', while the bundled DJ mix version from Boca 45 showcases these sounds as they're really meant to be heard.

Review: More from Faze Action member Robin Lee's offshoot Andromeda Orchestra project, whose throbbing and forthright releases have previously joined the dots between revivalist disco and the synthesizer-driven world of Italo-disco. In its original form (track three), "Don't Stop" is an authentically produced riff on the K.I.D track of the same name rich in swooping, razor-sharp strings, Clavinet-happy disco grooves and glassy-eyed female vocals. It comes accompanied by a stellar peak-time remix from Lee's old pal Ray Mang - all layered drum fills, swirling noises and jangling piano riffs - and a spacey, beat-free ambient "Reprise". Bonus cut "Kano Line Dance", a funky mid-tempo shuffler that joins the dots between boogie, jazz-funk and P-funk, is also rather tasty.

Review: The first installment of Late Night Tales' After Dark was that rarest of things: a DJ mix that retained a smoky sense of early morning, home listening atmosphere while retaining an open-minded focus on the dancefloor. This follow-up - once again compiled and mixed by Bill Brewster - offers more of the same. Musically it's pleasingly varied, moving from the string-drenched downtempo beauty of Typesun's "Last One Home", to the heady Balearic rock of General Lee, via Justus Kohnke, the soulful post-bruk smoothness of As One, and the sprightly analogue electronics of Emperor Machine's remix of Paqua's "Late Train". There's also a bunch of previously unreleased tunes to enjoy, including killer contributions from the Mang Dynasty (AKA Ray Mang), The Gino Fontaine (Chicken Lips man Andrew Meecham) and - most surprising of all - The Grid and Robert Fripp.

Review: Barcelona-based Arnau Obiols has chalked up releases on such respected labels as Local Talk, Ibadan and Compost, and now returns to the latter in the company of Zurich's KAYYAK. Together they serve up two tracks that draw heavily on 70s Afro-funk for inspiration, with 'Faith' coming with a slightly mellower remix courtesy of Medlar & Dele Sosimi while 'San Diago' gets two rerubs, with Rahaan giving the track a slightly jazzier, more leftfield makeover while Prins Thomas's Diskomix transforms it into a slab of percussive, slo-mo disco. Any/all should go down well on floors where Afro-oriented beats are in demand.

Review: The A's & Bees label was founded on a simple premise: to deliver fresh editions of killer cuts of old that showcase original mixes and new versions from some of the re-edit scene's best and brightest talents. Here they mine the catalogue of disco-era vocalist Jackie Moore and return with 1983 single 'Holding Back', a sweet, jazz-funk influenced slab of boogie-era disco that's something of a cult classic. Italian hero Moplen provides a fresh multi-track remix that builds up through waves of percussion and reverb-laden solos before unleashing the full song and a particularly strong instrumental end section. The EP also boasts three '83 mixes from John Morales and Sergio Munzabai: the self-explanatory 'Vocal Mix', the nine-minute 'Breakdown Mix' (which features multiple drops, builds and breakdowns) and the vocal-free 'Chin-Mental' mix.

Kanesaka kicks things off with a nod to the past, faithfully reproducing the iconic opening Hindewhu whistle hoot that graced the Headhunters' version. This playful detail sets the tone for a joyous journey that retains the "mathematical balance" of Hancock's original while packing a punchier, club-ready groove.
