Review: Throughout their decade-long career, Alma Negra has combined their love of disco and deep house with percussion, instrumentation and ideas excavated from African, Caribbean and tropical musical cultures. On this EP, they largely ditch the latter inspirations, instead delivering full-throttle revivalist disco sounds where the Basel-based band's organic instrumentation and vocals combine with colourful synth sounds and heady horns. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'Madrugada', a warming and thickset, subtly deep house-influenced take on the turn-of-the-80s NYC downtown disco-not-disco sound. It comes backed with two revisions - an extra-percussive, dubbed-out Yuksek tweak and the band's own dub disco-goes-deep house 'Dub Mix' - and the riotous, party-starting brilliance of 'Funky Fever'.

Review: In an industry where the term 'veteran' is bandied about far too freely, Colin Curtis is the real deal! His DJing career goes all the way back to legendary Northern Soul club The Golden Torch in the late 60s. In the 70s, he was a resident at Blackpool Mecca alongside Ian Levine, where he became one of the first DJs to introduce the more modern sound of jazz-funk to the scene. By the mid-80s he'd become an early UK champion of house, too, but these days it's on the jazz-dance scene that he's most revered - and here he serves up a 26-track connoisseur's collection that shows why. Ranging from straight-up jazz and soul to soulful house and leaning heavily towards the Afro- and Latin-flavoured, some of these cuts are recent offerings, some date back as far as the 70s, but on jazz-dance floors, all will go down a treat.

Review: Some unabashedly old skool disco fun and frolics on this five-tracker from Italy's Ministry Of Funk, and his publicity-shy oppo Disco Incorporated. A lively re-edit of MJ's 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' kicks the EP off in party-hearty style; after that, 'Golden Melody' brings very familiar sweeping, soaring strings, 'Back Into Time' will please New Yorkers whether they were born there or are just on an odyssey (hint hint!) while 'High Steppin' and 'Soul Woman' revisit dancefloor staples from Love Unlimited, with the latter throwing in a well-known snatch of Peech Boys vocal for good measure.

Review: If funk and jazz are your thing, don't sleep on this latest missive from Italy's Lego Edit stable, which packs six reworks of vintage cuts both highly familiar and somewhat less so, We start out with the instantly recognisable groove of Kool & The Gang's 'Jungle Boogie', now reinvented as 'Jazz-Ungle', while elsewhere you'll find fresh takes on the Dave Brubeck Quartet's jazz classic 'Take Five' (1959) and Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson's 'It's Your World' (1976). The sources for the other three will have to go sadly unindentified (though those piano licks on 'Jazzy Touch' are annoyingly familiar) but rest assured, this is classy stuff all round.

Review: Contemporary disco with the funk and soul in full effect is the order of the day on this V/A offering from Ravanelli Disco Club. Vigi's opening 'Loving You' comes from the more discofied end of the deep house and garage spectrum and should be a small-hours cert, after which comes Kousto's 'Save My Soul', which marries rolling tribal drums to a looped soulful male vocal, and as such should work on soul and soulful house floors alike. It's then time to get up, stand up as Sauco's aptly-titled 'Twisted Funk' takes us into struttier territory, before finally Donny Rotten brings the 70s-inspired nu-disco vibes with 'Her Way'.

Review: Following on from the release of her debut album last year and its 'Remixes' counterpart in May, Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm now returns with two fresh tracks that once again showcase female vocalists from around the world. 'Nina' finds her collaborating with transnational duo Farafi, while the accompanying 'Sisters' is graced by pan-African supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique. Both tracks are rooted firmly in traditional African music, with 'Nina' a percussive, chanted affair while 'Sisters' has a more lilting, singsong kinda vibe, but 'Nina' also gets a brace of more house-oriented remixes courtesy of Tel Aviv's Elado (a Razor-N-Tape regular) and Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project.

Review: Melbourne, Australia-based DJ/producer Ken Walker - the possessor of perhaps THE best artist moniker in the game - follows up last summer's debut full-length 'Discopolis' with a second volume that's every bit as essential. Rocking an overall vibe somewhere between contemporary (rather than 'nu') disco and disco-house, the album opens with 'What In The World', which nods to The Police's 'When The World Is Running Down', and closes with 'Saxophonica', which marries the risque spoken vocal from Jimmy Z feat Dr Dre's 'Funky Flute' (which also appears on 'Blow It') to the sax line from Men At Work's 80s hit 'Who Can It Be Now?'. It's fair to say our Ken isn't averse to dropping the odd familiar sample, then: in fact, the 15 cuts here blur the lines between sampling and re-editing. But trust us, the dancefloor's going to be far too busy dancing to worry about that.

Review: 62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.

Review: When Andy Bull AKA Bully Boy launched the Act of Sedition label a couple of years back his aim was to release "the finest 45 edits" on seven-inch double-packs. It's something of a surprise, then, to see the label land on digital download with a sprawling collection of previously vinyl-only reworks and bonus edits. Expect a gloriously vibrant and floor-friendly mixture of gospel-tinged psychedelic soul (Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom"), Clav-happy disco-funk squelch (Disco-Tech's "Assassination"), sweet disco sing-alongs (SanFrankDisko's "Get It Right"), sweaty punk-funk/dub disco heaviness ("Cavern Dance" by V's Edits), high octane disco-camp (Mighty Mouse's cheerfully silly "Got To Have Nothing") and much more besides.

Review: They've yet to make as much of an impact in the northern hemisphere but Melbourne-based outfit Mildlife are big news Down Under - their last (second) album 'Automatic' went Top 10 nationally in 2020, and won the ARIA award for Best Jazz Album to boot. Now they're back with long player #3, 'Closer', and it showcases a sound that's hard to pin down, with the album as a whole fusing elements of jazz-funk/jazz-fusion, Balearica, cosmic disco, psychedelic pop and modern indie, and even straying close to ambient territory on the title track. With the tempo seldom rising above walking pace ('Musica' being the only exception), there are no obvious dancefloor moments here - instead, it's an album that's best served whole, when in a mellower frame of mind...

Review: More from Faze Action member Robin Lee's offshoot Andromeda Orchestra project, whose throbbing and forthright releases have previously joined the dots between revivalist disco and the synthesizer-driven world of Italo-disco. In its original form (track three), "Don't Stop" is an authentically produced riff on the K.I.D track of the same name rich in swooping, razor-sharp strings, Clavinet-happy disco grooves and glassy-eyed female vocals. It comes accompanied by a stellar peak-time remix from Lee's old pal Ray Mang - all layered drum fills, swirling noises and jangling piano riffs - and a spacey, beat-free ambient "Reprise". Bonus cut "Kano Line Dance", a funky mid-tempo shuffler that joins the dots between boogie, jazz-funk and P-funk, is also rather tasty.

Review: Four-piece "producer collective and DJ team" The Niceguys hail from Switzerland and have a long string of releases under their belt for labels like Bomb Strikes, Westwood Recordings and Ghetto Funk. Here they return to the former with four cuts that would work on funk-breaks and modern soul floors alike, with the Bobby Saint-vocalled 'Irie' and 'Strip It' rocking a Prince-like vibe, 'Don't Let Go' sporting a full-lunged soul vocal from Justina Lee Brown, and 'Dance' having something of a Smoove & Turrell-like feel. 'Don't Let Go' takes the gold for this writer but it's all good so feel free to disagree!

Review: Dave Lee has described this epic album, his first under the lesser-known AC Soul Symphony alias, as not only a 'labour of love', but also a tribute to the soaring string sounds and musically expansive arrangements that marked out work by original 1970s disco acts such as the Salsoul Orchestra, MFSB and Love Unlimited. Review: Germany's prolific Jayl Funk returns to Italy's Sound Exhibitions. "Get On Ya Feet" is served up in two mixes: the Original Mix will appeal to fans of "new old" funk and soul acts like the Dap Kings, Speedometer or Lack Of Afro, though there's a distinct house-y feel to the pianos too, while the Disco Edit beefs up the kicks and brings the piano and strings further to the fore, making it the better bet for dancefloor play in livelier spots. Completing the package is "Waiting For You", which has more of an R&B/pop feel thanks to its counterpointed sing-song female and rapped male vocals, but which is irresistibly catchy all the same.

Review: Four new mixes here of a track from 1976 that'll be familiar to most disco connoisseurs: a firm favourite at David Mancuso's The Loft, it's featured on countless bootlegs over the years (including the 'Loft Classics' 12-inch series in the 90s) as well as Tom Middleton's 'The Trip' compilation. The Extended and 2023 mixes delivered here stick pretty faithfully to the space-y, sensual groove of the original, leaving it up to everyone's favourite moustachioed Parisian to get busy with the echo box and other FX on his Remix before stripping things right back on his Spacer Dub. A must, whichever rub you plump for.

Review: The honour of curating the 44th instalment of Katakana's Edits series has fallen on Disco Funk Spinner, a much respected re-edit guy whose work has appeared on the likes of Midnight Riot, Disco Fruit and Sound Exhibitions. Here though he only manages to provide two jams, but it's quality, not quantity, right? First up we get "Night Strangers" which takes loops from Candi Staton's Bee Gees cover (Nights On Broadway) and adds an accelerated disco house tempo and subtle but funky embellishments. On the digital flip is "On Fire", a clever rework of Peggy Lee's indestructible classic, Fever. Hot stuff!

Review: Over the last few years, Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson has spent a fair amount of time mentoring Peacey, a young producer with oodles of talent. That much is proved by the rising star's expansive debut album, a superb 16-track set that combines sizzling colo cuts with a string of inspired collaborations. Review: With the catalogue that the Cuttin' It Fine team have both assembled and keep adding to, it's hard to expect anything less than exceptional with every release. They deliver another set of four breakbeat belters, courtesy of both El Bomba & Roast Beatz. First up, El Bomba delivers a dancefloor-ready funk out in 'Take A Break', a lively combo of sharp drum slaps and lip-curling basslines, before Roast Beatz the energy with the groovy guitar plucks and singalong vocals of 'Party Over Here'. Back to El Bomba next as the classic sounding guitar melodies and unpredictable drum shakes of 'Bronco Funk' tone down the madness a tad, before rounding off with anthem-like arrangements of 'Get On Down' from Roast Beatz, boasting a showstopper of a bassline, draped in pleasing horn switches and tidy vocal chops for good measure.

Review: Label newcomer Canopy Records, compiled and conceptualised by label head Sumosui, sends out some super Afro transmission for this first release. 'Africa No 1' is a single that features a superb tune from Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria, which was first put out locally in 1987. It is by the late great Nigerian reggae artist Ehi Duncan and his The Africa Army Express band and next to the uplifting original are two new mixes from Captain Planet. He brings the tune into the modern day with some tight key, horn and synth sounds for the first mix, and the second is a slower, more mid-tempo bit of afro disco. Lovely vibes.

Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.
