Review: Nope, not a Mike Leigh film about a council estate couple, Trevor & Lisa are in fact a Parisian Funk trio comprising Sebastien Despicht, Mikael Prignot and Stephane Ugolini. Dedicated to the art of live performance, these guys have rinsed the French gig circuit and their resulting musical dexterity has now manifested itself in this debut album. It's a rollicking good listen with standouts including the breaky "Night Of The Wolf", the electro-boogie of "Soundshake" and the spacey, voicebox-led experience that is "Time".

L.A. Nights - (4:48) 100 BPM
Break Droppin' - (5:09) 91 BPM Hot
The Battle - (9:35) 127 BPM
Review: This release marks two important returns - that of both the High & Fly label and the jazz funk band Trevor & Lisa. They may sound like an early couple of characters in Eastenders, but this Parisian outfit are chic as you like. "LA Nights" is a vintage West Coast g-funk jam with Roger Troutman vibes a plenty. "Breaks Droppin'" is a smooth, melancholic slice of Balearic soul and "The Battle" is a sassy 70s Latin-disco-rock explosion. Guaranteed to blow your mind.

Wellen (Jensen Interceptor remix) - (6:25) 146 BPM Hot
Wellen (Yazzus remix) - (5:08) 150 BPM
Review: Next up from International Chrome, a tidy dive into the sounds of $ombi with this wicked new single 'Wellen', stacked up alongside a tasty box of remixes to match. The original track sees smooth french vocal textures lead the way as the rap-driven vibe of the track is assisted by moogy bass pulses and throwback drum designs. Remix wise, there is an immediate standout as DBridge delivers his 'Surging' remix, turning the track into an electrifying half-time trip, with Jensen's 'Interceptor' remix then giving us a high energy juke overhaul, focussing on skippy cowbell switch ups and tidy rhythmic displays. Finally, the acidic glitchiness of the Yazzus remix sees the collection out with a bang, rounding off a very unique collection of sonic outings indeed.

Review: 700 Bliss is the experimental club project of Philadelphia-based DJ Haram and Moor Mother. This is their first full-length release for Hyperdub, where they incorporate noise rap, club music and hip hop with punk and jazz. Featuring guests such as Lafawndah on "Totally Spies", Orion Sun on "Nightflame", and Muqata'a on "Candace Parker". There is also Alli Logout appearing on "Capitol", M Tellez lending their talents to "More Victories" and Ase Manual contributing production on "Lead Level 15". Nothing To Declare is loud, playful, fun and quite possibly one of the best rap albums of 2022.

Review: We have a real treat here as we touch down for a brand new LP project from Active Ingredients as the new French imprint of Cosmocites lands it's second full release project. The duo of Active Ingredients is made of the Adelaide x Atlanta link up of Stan 'Steam' Smith and Inkswel, and boy do they combine in style. This album project is a fresh new take on groovy hip-hop values, with some incredibly vibrant instrumental production laying the perfect landing zone for some fly-ass vocal arrangements. For us, the immediate stand outs have to be incredibly well designed harmonic structure and laid back flows of 'General Hot', along with the serious old school feel behind 'The Energy Above'.

Review: Based in Suffolk, ActRaiser goes by Rob Sayles in real life, and until quite recently he was best known for a string of liquid funk releases on labels such as Fokuz, Celsius and Influenza Media. His fourth album, however, finds him back in the downtempo/chill-out territory where he started out - his 2011 debut album came out on Cold Busted. 'Short Stories' may be sitting in our Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz pages but you won't find too many 7/13 time signatures or pointless flute noodles here - instead think dreamy, soulful instrumental vibes from the Balearic side of the street. It's a little 'polite' in places, maybe, but easy on the ear all the same.

Review: It's the summer! It's time to fire up the BBQ and spend sunny weekend afternoons in the garden... which means it's also a good time to be releasing laidback but still party-oriented lo-fi hip-hop grooves. Enter Alexander Norman and Dynamite MC, who've come up with 'Flamingo' - think the cream of the Bay Area lo-fi scene trying their hand at something along the lines of Jazzy Jeff's classic 'Summertime' and you're somewhere in the ballpark. Remixes come from Beatvandals, who up the tempo slightly, and Kenny Beeper, who serves up a more electro-fied rub, while an instrumental completes the package.

Review: A most loved artist within the Bomb Strikes arsenal is Ali B who's supplied a stream of music for the imprint over recent years, taking in collaborations with The Jungle Brothers, Nick Thayer and vocalists like Baby Bam, and now Afika NX. Turning in a bass heavy, 808 inspired jazz twist in the title-track, it's full of Atlanta hip hop attitudes - to broken beat and funk elements in the Fort Knox remix - "Swing It" goes as good in the club as it does your turbo charged whip.

Review: Virginia's All Good Funk Alliance team up with Orlando-based conscious rapper Swamburger on this six-track, seven-mix EP for Super Hi Fi. Party-style hip-hop reminiscent of the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5 or OutKast is the order of the day generally, though 'Sunshine Today' adopts a less frantic, party-hearty pace and 'Nursery Rhymes' addresses more serious themes of structural racism - but then that's also the track they've chosen to supply with a matching instrumental. Worth investigating for lovers of old school rap vibes.

Review: For their latest statement of intent, Bristol's nu-funk troubadours The Allergies have found a new home at Goodgroove. They've consummated the relationship in fine style too, going a whopping four times in the process. "Special People" is a roaring breaky funker that could easily be mid-70s O'Jays. Elsewhere we get daisy age hip hop jam "React", vintage Stax-style stomper "As We Do Our Thing" and guitar-led rap "Feel Alright". We're glad they're back!

Seven Days - (3:36)
Ever Love You - (3:30) 144 BPM
Review: Those searching for formidable, funk-fuelled party fodder should be well aware of the Riddim Fruit label, one of the more reliable sources of mash-up madness. This EP from The Allergies - complete with heavy beats, scratches, borrowed rap vocals and funk breaks aplenty - should cause carnage in those clubs that still rock the breakbeat vibe. Lead cut "Heartbreaker" sets the tone by revisiting a little known funk stomper, while "Club Spillage" fuses bottom-heavy boom-bap beats with quality raps and slick Hammond organ licks. "Seven Days" spices up a string-laden funk-soul jam with some weighty breakbeat pressure, while "Ever Live" slows the tempo for some sweet soul-hop bumpiness. Predictably solid.

Review: The Cold Busted imprint's got mad skillz at scouting out the best new talent for their catalogue, always feverishly sticking to their nu-school wave of all things jazz-related. In a sense, this is the perfect outlet for all those'jazz-dance' heads who spend the majority of their time digging up curious B-sides in the hope of finding some groove in their lives! Andyfellaz is a new name on the block but it feels like the artist has been making music for some time, as his style of sampling and looping feels both fresh and a little bit over on the left of field. Tunes like "Just One More Time" showcase the man's clear passion for raw, hazy jazz basements, while others like "Luna Roja" play a delightfully lounge mood that will fit here, there and everywhere. Perfect for your mid-morning Balearic deviations, too!

Review: Italian producer and 808-aficionado Aquadrop joins Top Billin with a bass-heavy track featuring vocals by Rayna. With releases on Mad Decent, Main Course and Seclusiasis, and the likes of Diplo, Flosstradamus, Baauer constantly spinning his tracks, Aquadrop's reputation stands before him, and he doesn't disappoint. Mango-sweet and full of hot, tropical vibes, "Bloko Bloko" kicks off in a dancehall style before dropping down deep to a severe bassline pounding set to shake thousands of asses. Remixes in this pack come from Philly's street bass kings Starkey and Dev79, tropical ghettomaster Douster and Australian newcomer Gucci Boo The Ghost Producer, all adding their individual twists to this tasty little cocktail. Review: For the uninitiated, Around7 is a Parisian beatmaker with a difference. Composing mainly with an MPC in the old hip-hop fashion, he makes deep, jazz-soaked jams that sit somewhere between Guru, DJ Cam and Moodymann. This 19-minute 'LP' for Phil Weeks' Robsoul Jazz imprint is something of a surprise gem, flitting effortlessly between bossa-influenced 4/4 cuts (see "Broi"), sampladelic deep soul beats ("The 7th Sin"), stoned trip-hop (the Jazzamatazz flashback vibes of "Butter & Fly" and "I Love BBQ") and head-nodding nu-jazz ("Kick It"). The overall quality suggests that we could be hearing more from him in coming years.

Review: There is a high bar on the quality scale when it comes to Cuttin' It Fine's fantastic catalogue of original breakbeat wonder. This latest drop from Azido 88 & Cadillacque is a great example of them at their best, as the duo unveil a smooth newschool hip hop roller by the name of 'Heavy Hitters'. The original is a proper summertime anthem, a roof down, speakers blaring type of singalong, but the project really spices up when we begin to dive into the remixes. First up, X-Ray Ted supplies us with a funk-infused rethink, focussing on crunchy horn melodies, before Roast Beatz turns up the temperature with stripped back, bass-driven rethink. Finally, DZRT FRST supplies us with a tech-infused 4x4 refit of the tune, adding the final dash of variation needed to put this EP up to the next level!

Review: Serious booty-fusion abounds on this new series from Booty Fruit. Badboe introduces Jeru The Damaja and Ini Kamoze to a disco bassline. Roast Beatz gives Grand Puba a sexy, sun-kissed facelift. El Bomba and Hidden Riddim go back to school on their Akai and get clever with a range of well-known samples and big old juicy bassline. Waggles finishes the set with the cheekiest addition that sees the Beastie Boys on a lounge lizard samba flex. Party insanity.

Review: Oakland's own Balkan Bump steps forward on this one for a phenomenal body of eastern inspired work. From the off we are treated to temptatious horn melodies and super satisfying drum rolls on 'Irfan' which features additional production credits from Paul Bertin. From here we slide effortlessly into the tip-toe rhythms and ascending trumpet melodies of 'Judaeo Slang' before hitting the more stripped back hip-hop arrangements of 'Wonderland'. The EP then rounds up perfectly amidst regal lead harmonies and a guest vocal feature from none other than Talib Kweli on 'Aymo'.

Space Cadillac - (4:28) 138 BPM
Review: Bombstrikes welcomes Beat Le Juice to the label for his debut release. Whilst the Polish DJ & Producer may be new to the label, he is certainly no stranger to the scene, picking up a growing army of fans for his releases and remixes, combining funk vibes and electronic sounds. First up, '2 Funky' delivers a full-on bass funk assault with guitar hooks, synth bass, and powerful beats. This is all topped off by an anthemic talk box with Mr. Maph's funk vocal hooks and the deft flow delivery of EVeryman. The 2nd track, 'Lollipop' oozes class from the first refrains of its infectious synth hook, going on to combine elements of P-Funk with bottom-heavy modern electro. Finally, the title track 'Space Cadillac' combines soulful vocals over low-slung beats and bass to take the tempo down a little but loses none of the energy. If this is a sign of things to come from Beat Le Juice and Bombstrikes, then strap in because it's going to be quite the ride!

Review: There's no need to rush things in January, it's a grim time so best to take it slow, stay in bed. Greece's Beat Ride have the right idea - release these four trip-hop infused jams that sound like they were recorded from underneath the duvet. "Wake Up" is a lazy roller with a rap from The Mage, "Another Bad Day" boasts Bassey-esque vocals from Antigoni Kostala, "People" is all cinematic strings and epic beats, but it's the perky easy listening stomper "Dreamers" that's the most likely to get your feet back on to the floor.

Review: Lo-fi US-inspired UK hip hop outta Beau Marcel for Catch Wreckords which sees the artist invite a guest for each of these tracks here. With beat-making and sampling methods taking its inspiration from soul, funk and human rights in "Sid" there's reggae and urban flavours to boot in "Lll Flow To Go", to classical swoons of strings and dusty basslines in "Life's Limbo", to the up-beat, rhyme spitting "20 20". A sweet four-track EP of literary, dramatic and musical expressions.

Review: Seeing the names Big Dope P and Moveltraxx in the same sentence is always going to be an exciting way to start the week, as we see the two entities combine for a sizzling thirteen track album, taking the title 'Mehlish'. This is a fantastic showcasing of just how creative people can get within the boundaries of the Juke / Footwork sound, from the rave-ready 4x4 thumps of 'Ride It' with TT The Artist & Feadz, to the more mechanical percussive displays of 'Ugly' with Mighty Mark and the epic 80's synth slides of 'Diaphane'. It's difficult to actually highlight a standout set, with the overall quality of this project being so high. One standout however has to be one of the bonus tracks entitled 'Presidential Pimping', which we can see working extremely well as a D&B double drop, utilizing regal sounding horn stabs and hard hitting drums to tremendous effect.

Unbeliever (Goin' Crazy remix) - (6:14) 126 BPM

Review: The Italian duo Boot Shape aren't afraid to mine the soulful R&B styles of the '80s and '90s on new single "Unbeliever". With nods to Gregory Abbot and even Seal at times, this pair keep things thoroughly smoothed-out and chilled, with a huge vocal by Mozez anchoring the whole thing nicely. "Special One" is even more of an under-the-covers treat, with an accapella available that's just begging to be used over some slo-mo beats. If you're after a bit more perk however, Goin' Crazy's mix of "Unbeliever" has got you covered.

Review: 18 months have passed since Bristol beatcamp Durkle Disco last compiled a "Definitions" EP. Once again the quality and levels of talent are high as Boycott busses up the best dynamics of trap, grime and dubstep for a lean, mean slaying machine they call "HK '87", Daffy & Gundam's "Bio Schematics" continues the stripped back prangish tones Durkle have made their signature with the equally alarming "Bio Schematics". Deeper into the EP we hit purring 808 soul from Denham Audio before getting the chop from Unkey on the icy stepper "Karate Club". Black belt business.

Review: Brian Rays is back in business, unleashing his killer new album project 'Slime', courtesy of the one and only Acroplane recordings. One word of warning, prepare for the unexpected as we dive into 10 tracks of sonic surrealism, from the uber-eerie percussive melodies of 'Plugs' with Quiet, to the stunning synthetic soundscaping of 'Nightcrawler' and high octane drum bops of 'Vampire Tints' alongside Riffs. As an album, this collection takes us on a completely unpredictable flight path, with a new rhythmic direction and melodic approach waiting around every corner. Our highlight moments include the super glitchy percussive arrangements of 'Ghost Burger' alongside the legendary Neil Landstrumm, next to the time-dancing subby twists of 'Oddball'. A highly inspired album for sure.

Review: Back with more wow riddims, Skinzmann pairs up with sharp-tongued MC Breeza and friends for a full-strength peng blend. Opening with war banger "We Harder", D Knight and Beaney join the fray with stern sermons before we drop into the G'd up bumper versions of "The Dopest". Elsewhere "Turn The Volume Up" switches on the chiller, laid-back grooves while "Bangin' Don" tells a much darker tale with pranged aesthetics. Finally "Zone Out" closes with a toxic sub-low touch. Gully.

The original recording goes by the name of 'Memory Lanez' takes a majorly uplifting lead horn line crossed with angelic vocal choruses, making for a wicked overall composition when tied in with the intirciate lyrical twists of the two lead vocalists. On remix duty, Gramophone Soul step up first with a soulful rethink, heavy on piano harmonies, followed by a west coast inspired rethink from Roast Beatz, packed with scratch routines and crunchy percussive lines. Both remixes also come complete with instrumental versions for good measure!

Review: More Good Things come... Phil and Dan Brookes return to the black and yellow brand with a seriously sultry summertime bliss-out. Opening with a halftime vibe, the smoky jazzy vibes are amplified by Amahla's soul-searching vocals while the naked piano does its hypnotising thing in a way that few artists beyond Calibre can manage in D&B. As for the jazzy rim-shot switch to 170? Don't even get us started: pure soul heaven.

Review: Theo Parrish's Wildheart imprint has seriously impressed since its first release last year. The label's aesthetic is simple: good music. While the previous two releases have featured established artists such as Tony Allen and Dego, this latest EP comes from Living Proof-member, Budgie. Having established himself as an eclectic selector up until now - his boogie-centred sets causing quite a stir on the dancefloor each time we've seen him play out - he comes through with his debut productions for the London-Detroit label. There's no real way to describe this release, where shreds of funk, hip-hop and soul are mashed up so tightly that they've grown a life of their own. In fact, when you hear it through, it almost sounds like one full track; a vibrant and grooving mass of crunchy beats, mesmerising harmonics and devious little samples. We're certainly looking forward to hearing Budgie's upcoming blends of neo-soul. Heartily recommended to fans of most cuts on Stones Throw or PPU.

Review: Cadenza is hotly tipped producer Oliver Rodigan who is now finally releasing a vocal version of his cult hit instrumental. The tune is essentially a reworking of The Lafyette Afro Rock Band's '70s classic 'The Darkest Light' (as famously sampled on Public Enemy's 'Show 'Em Whatcha Got'). The lead version marries killer sleazy trap-isms to that beguiling sax sample, footwork producer Philip D Kick delivers a sinister, hip hop-ish version featuring a relentless rap from Brooklyn's Deena Jonez. Elsewhere Wondagurl add some drama with ominous brass samples and synthpop lines, while Moresounds wraps things up in trippy, maybe even comatose, cotton wool.

Review: An unexpected treat from this very new Italian band, "The Bug" is 90s-era Prince done in a fresh, laidback and highly entertaining way. Riding a matching bass and guitar riff and some simple live drums, it uses backing vocals to their catchiest potential and has a vocal that's softer than butter. Like a bridge between Yacht Rock and the first MGMT album, it's a real delight, as is its quirkier B-Side, "Fosterdatico".

He tries his hand at a bit of everything over these six tracks, including the deep cowbell soulful grooves of "If It Wasn't For You", the lean sample-laden electro-house of "Dynamics" and the elegantly wasted, blissed out synthpop of "My Dreams". It's all sewn up with quirky interludes and outros too, making for an impressively cohesive release.

Review: Beautifully slo-mo and laced with squidgy bass, Breakspoll award winners Scour come correct with this funky little number from Cedar and Imagine. Strutting with swinging beats and a bassline so rude it'll make your father blush, it's the perfect bed for Imagine's slick lyrics. Remix-wise DJP adds some classic horns into the mix, Father Funk gets jazzy on the keys, J-Sound splashes out on some cheeky reverse mid-range bass processes while Howla throws down the gnarliest blend of the set with bolshy bass and bold stabs. One killer original, four creative pristine executed remixes; Scour have nailed this one.

Review: Music is rife with repetition. It thrives off it, from sampling to homages to pastiche. But we guarantee you have never heard anything like this. It's Shakespeare's Othello told in a UK hip-hop narrative. No, really. What's more, it genuinely works; while charged at rate of verbal knots, bardman Charlie D's lyrical approach is clear and emphatic, enveloping you into the tragic tale with true storyteller skills. The beats, meanwhile, flicker and faze with the right balance of poignancy and bass. Genuinely unique.

Review: British jazz drummer Yussef Dayes hooks up with bossman on keys Charlie Stacey and bassist Rocco Palladino for Welcome To The Hills. Released on Dayes' own Cashmere Thoughts label inspired by the Jay Z song of the same name, the album presents a live stream of off the hook cosmic jazz, new age funk, downtempo and free-spirited soul that exhales a colourful plume of hi-energy instrumentalism from the lungs of jazz music. Deep and spacey it is in tracks like "Ride Out" and the 12-minute epic "Gully Side" while drums skitter buckwild in numbers like "Black Love ~ Amazonian Springs" and "Encore ~ Babylon Burning". Find more casual and cool swaggers of groove in "Odyssey" next to "Jamaican Links" and the slow jam dubs of "Purple Skies ~ Libations". The rebirth of cool: live and direct!

Review: Manchester is a truly wonderful city, with a musical heritage that swamps the majority of other cities around the UK historically. In recent years we have seen that shift much more towards electronic and rap-based music with a fantastic pool of performers emerging, but being real, Chimpo is no newcomer. The veteran producer and vocalist lands here for yet another fabulous album release under the title of 'HIA', seeing him explore a wide variety of musical styles and themes. Chimpo's versatility and consistency is what has given him his Mount Rushmore status within Manchester's musical history and that is clear throughout this project, from the grimey squarewaves of 'Up The Wall' alongside Slay, through to the funk-inspired instrumental structure of 'Nothing Good' with Rolla and UKG flips of 'Like I Luv U'. It is yet another fantastic showcase of Chimpo's numerous avenues of ability, with our highlight being the exciting vocal switch ups and minimal instrumental structure of 'Oh Your Goodness'. Amazing work!

Review: "Deepest Darkest": The title says it all. Just in case you're not up to speed, Slew Dem's Chronik truly is one of grime's darkest lyricists. And you get the impression he could back up every one of his stern messages in a flash. With a flow that calls out all fakers and slim-chatters he incorporates a daring sense of fun in his warnings with all manner of pop cultural references. Naturally the beats are equally subversive and moody; with a smidgeon of US flavour to the trappist riddim, there's a real trippy texture to the dynamics that matches Chronik's verbal heaviness.

Review: Audio-visual DJ Chris Chronsky is building a solid reputation in Australia. Here, he attempts to take his party-friendly saga with a debut EP on his new Tiefparterre imprint. The five tracks that make up The Saga Continues - represented on the cover, Gorillaz style, by five cartoon characters - were apparently created by live jamming using live instruments, electronics and, by the sound of it, an MPC. There's plenty of variety, from the skanking party bounce of "Ghetto Reggae" and stomping Jewish strut of "Jiddisch House", to the curious dubstep wobble of "Smack That Monkey" and baggy, jazzwise hip-hop swing of "The Saga Continues".

This latest four tracker continues in the same reign of form, with 'Endo' providing us with a haunted yet wonderfully wonky introduction, packed with creepy percussive inputs and grizzly electronic leads. Review: Now this is definitely a treat. Tru Thoughts are without question one of the most consistent imprints currently working in and around the UK underground. This latest release sees them invite the incredibly energetic sounds of Crafty893 inside for an exceptional seven track combination of vocal and instrumental originals. Right from the off we can tell we are in for a good time as 'Induction' unleashes an skippy, pluck heavy instrumental over which Crafty can deploy intense punchlines left right and centre, before the more emotional backdrop of 'Luv Me' sees him try something a little different. For the final vocal appearance, Ramzey & PJ Anthony get involved for a more R&B inspired roller, again showcasing Crafty's versatility, before jumping into instrumental versions of all of the above. We are also treated to 'Numb', a sumptuous grime instrumental, packed full of subby goodness and explosive shuffling drum beats, adding an additional touch of finesse to a top quality drop.

Review: A breakers banquet sounds like quite a messy affair - all those head spinning moves sending plates of food flying in all directions. Cris Crucial's Flawless EP thankfully fails to make a mess. Instead he delivers and unapologetically retro riot of late-80s, early-90s hip house jams that are all about the party. Highlights include the big beat scratch-a-thon "Anything Funky", the laid-back gangster funk of "Big Crucial Thing" and the 60s funk-sampling instrumental "Trouble Bucket".
