HIGH LIFE - (6:31) 124 BPM Hot
NIGHT SHIFT - (7:03) 124 BPM
MERCY - (7:02) 124 BPM
Review: Having made his debut for the label way back in 2012, Milwaukee-based DJ/producer Richard Galling is one of Jolly Jams' longest serving artists. His sixth EP for DJ Kaos's imprint is a powerful affair, with Galling offering up a trio of sleazy late night machine jams that sit somewhere between early '80s proto-techno, muscular EBM and jackin' Chicago house. Our pick of the bunch is opener "High Life", a throbbing workout whose peak-time power is the result of a mix of thrusting synth-bass, restless drum machine cowbells and a heavy low-register acid line. The similarly inclined "Night Shift" is, if anything, even heavier and more powerful, while "Mercy" sees Galling wrap mangled TB-303 lines around a suitably weighty beat.

Use Me - (5:47) 122 BPM
Review: Over a 30-year career, Steve Bug has released an incredible amount of club-focused music, much of it genuinely brilliant. Given that he's successfully turned his hand to deep house, tech-house, hip-house and techno, it's always a bad idea to and guess what he'll serve up next. So, what's on offer on 'Piano FM', his second EP for Aus Music? A real mixture of peak-time ready cuts, that's what. For proof, compare, and contrast the foreboding bass, glassy-eyed female vocal snippets, bouncy pianos and snappy beats of 'Piano FM', with the deeper but no less weighty 'The Moment', where raw analogue bass and jazzy stabs catch the ear. To complete a fine EP, the long-serving German producer opts for a classic US deep house vibe on the warming and loved-up 'Use Me'.

Review: Local Talk's celebration of the '90s house-inspired corners of its now vast catalogue continues, with the much admired Swedish stable serving up 12 tidy tracks from a mixture of rising stars and scene stalwarts. It begins with the tactile, sunrise-ready wonder of Sean McCabe's '6AM Dub' of his own superb 'It's My Life', and ends with the densely layered, loop-powered disco-house rush of Circulation's 'The Return (1997 Mix)'; in between, you'll find an array of highlights including Dirtytwo's 'Moody' (an on-point Mood II Swing tribute), the deep, Italo-house style colour of Willie Graff and Tuccillo's 'Sunday Morning', the vintage Kerri Chandler-esque bump of Tom Noir's 'Feel Me' and the rolling warmth of Art of Tones' 'Dirty Stories'.

Sameed - "Can't U" - (4:42) 123 BPM
Sameed - "Dusty Jazz" - (5:53) 120 BPM
Review: Since first dropping on wax in the autumn, this multi-artist affair has gone on to be one of Local Talk's most popular releases in years. It's easy to see why. Jamie 326 and Masalo's "Testify" is a fabulously urgent concoction - a low-sling, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around a restless rhythm track, impassioned, gospel style vocal snippets, and killer Clavinet lines. Sameed's dustier, sweatier "Can't U" offers a different slant on the same idea, offering a basement-bothering stomper that utilizes many of the same samples. Finally, the same artist delivers something looser in the shape of deep jazz-house jam "Dusty Jazz".

Review: Skatman's latest release titled "Rewarped" showcases his exceptional talent for reviving and revitalising past sounds. The Tunisian-born producer, DJ, and label owner skillfully blends old-school hip-hop samples with energetic house tracks, seamlessly bridging the gap between different musical epochs. With six new tracks of hedonistic club music, Skatman, also known as Aziz Haddad, takes familiar elements and infuses them with a fresh twist. The result is a masterclass in creating an exhilarating musical experience that resonates with both nostalgia and contemporary dance floor desires.

Blind Is The Wind (interlude) - (1:07) 123 BPM
Last Chance Saloon - (9:16) 123 BPM
Review: Baby Ford's long running Trelik label enjoyed a more prolific year in 2011 than at any time in the past decade, and Whalesong is a fitting end to a glorious 12 months. If you've been following Och's releases, then you'll know what to expect here. The title track sees the mysterious producer drop dubbier, full blooded beats and billowing chords over a surging groove, while the use of shuffling drums and a stuttering vocal lend the track a memorable signature. "Blind Is The Wind" is an unusual ambient affair thanks to the inclusion of a confused vocal, but Och returns to his natural habitat on "Last Chance Saloon", which features more of the same pumping beats and dreamy chord sequences.

Review: Following on from releases for Pomelo and PAL SL, LD Nero makes a welcome return to Trelik, the label that unveiled the project back in 2011. Detroit house flavours lace "Als Ik Kan", as a bleepy synth loudly sounds on the off beat over short stabby chords and shuffling drums. A summery, Rhode uplifting house track awaits in "The Feel" while a loose "I'm Burning" almost sounds like LD Nero has each of the tracks elements placed on a separate turntable; making sure to keep them beat matched and aligned.

Overcome - (9:01) 125 BPM
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) - (9:23) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Trelik returns with a reissued edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the accompanying "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike.

Review: Although it's widely believed that electro-house evolved out of the electroclash phenomenon of the early Noughties, the truth is that the blueprint had already been established with the release of Chicken Lips' masterpiece "He Not In" back in 2000. The impact of this record by the rebranded pop-rave act, Bizarre inc, cannot be underestimated - with its 4/4 disco clap and melodic electro bassline, it influenced so many producers over the years. Many of who return the favour here with a host of remixes. Highlights include Groove Armada's hypnotic 'Dub Reconstruction" and Noir's "Personal Edit" (a staple of his live sets for years).

Review: For the latest stop on their whistle-stop tour of feelgood house history, Defected's 4 To The Floor offshoot parks up outside Sandy Rivera's studio and asks the Kings of Tomorrow man to gather together all known versions of his 1998 LT Brown hook-up Come Into My Room. Given that the track has been remixed and reissued countless times since, that's some task. We're particularly enjoying the pumping but dreamy soulful house flex of the "Take It Back Mix" and the jazzy, broken rhythms of "Sandy's Remix", though Rivera's more electronic and European sounding "09 Remix" and the bustling, bass-propelled "Toolroom Boys Remix" are also rather special. Also worth checking is one of the earliest reworks from 1998: the low-slung, DJ Sneak style disco-house hypnotism that is the D-Menace remix.

Mumia (Red Axes remix) - (6:18) 125 BPM
Review: Following successful collaborations with Yuksek and Channel Tres, Hamburger Records regulars Polo & Pan join forces with the mighty Red Axes. The headline attraction is title track 'Mumia', a bass-heavy bounce through mutant Afro-house territory featuring hallucinatory, echo-laden horn sounds, wonky electronic lead lines and an infectious groove. Fittingly, both artists provide personal interpretations too. Polo& Pan successfully re-imagine it as a sun-soaked, effects-laden Balearic bouncer with a jaunty-as-anything, reggae-influenced beat, more horns and sun-splashed melodies, before Red Axes take it into druggy, early morning, acid house-with-added-percussion territory. Also worth a listen is Sunoco sporting bonus cut 'Desperado', a low-slung, mid-tempo, dub disco influenced shuffler that's as positive sounding as they come.

Lex (Athens) & Dennis Liber - "No Time For Formalities" - (6:16) 128 BPM
Review: Almost two years on from his last appearance on the label - a collaborative release alongside German drummer, percussionist and producer Locke - Athenian veteran Lex returns to Delusions of grandeur. This time round it's a nominally a solo mission, though Locke and Dennis Liber do appear as featured collaborators on selected tracks. Our pick of a very strong bunch is 'Without You', a hypnotic and locked-in acid house roller full of mind-mangling TB-303 motifs, jazzy Rhodes licks and spacey chords, though the deep and funky, disco and jazz-funk tinged 'Strip Town' is almost as good. Locke and Guto Fernandez hook-up 'Purity' is a fine vocal number that sits somewhere between percussive Latin house and nu-disco, while Dennis Liber collaboration 'No Time For Formalities' sounds like a long-lost piano house track from 1988.

Lady Science (Tek mix) - (5:48) 130 BPM
Review: As Soul Capsule, Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior made some of minimal techno's most accomplished records. It has been many years since they stopped turning out new material - sadly - but their archive tracks are still in hot demand and undeniably relevant. While 1999's 'Lady Science' might be their most famous offering, this EP from 2001 on Aspect Music is no less vital. It is Ford's Trelik label who reissues it here in all its glory. 'Law Of Grace' is a delightfully deep and breezy minimal dub house roller with pensive chords draped over the frictionless drums. 'Meltdown' has a more experimental feel with brushed metal drums beneath a wordless vocal musing. The cult 'Lady Science' (Tek Mix) is also inched with the whole package being remastered by D&M to make this one utterly essential.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Alexander Chebankov AKA Sunner Soul, namely warm, woozy, tactile and picturesque cuts that combine his own production chops with elements borrowed from disco, boogie, soul and Balearic jams. 'Da Funk', his first missive of 2024, boasts four tried and tested cuts. First up is the title track, a filter-heavy slab of filter heavy disco-house which boasts nods to some of Basement Jaxx's earliest material. This is followed by the Tiger & Woods-esque boogie-house of 'Need You', a tidy (and subtly dubby) South American jazz-funk-meets-disco number ('Brazilian Rhythms') and a gorgeously dreamy slab of ambient excellence ('Deep Space').

Object In The Sky - (7:54) 132 BPM
Review: Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Review: Session Victim makes another triumphant return to Delusions of Grandeur with The Intangibles EP, following some noteworthy releases on Toytonics and Rhythm Section International. In the EP's opening track, "Motivation," they team up with Ras Stimulant, a dub-wise microphone man, to create a mesmerizing and intoxicating peak-time loop jam. This track is filled to the brim with irresistible electric piano riffs, vocal snippets drenched in delay effects, jazzy embellishments, and interstellar electronics. Following is "Dromedary Twist" with some winding saxophone lines interweaved with a thick deep house groove, replete with sustained chords and improvised Rhodes motifs. Lastly, "Green Run" lowers the BPMs as the listener enters the realm of lazy, hazy, blissed-out jazzed-up beats. With their style combining live organic elements, fat floor-filling beats, the Germna's duo comes up with comprises three original tracks that traverse the spectrum of high-energy jazz disco meets techno, soulful uplifting house, and downtempo blunted beats.

Review: A few years back, siblings Peter and James Isaacs caught the attention of a fair few listeners with their first two EPs as Donald's House, which both paired a joyous, piano-heavy approach to house music with musical and percussive elements borrowed from nu-disco, freestyle, proto-house and high-class 1980s synth-pop. This colourful and tactile trademark sound remains as alluring on ever as The Final Front Ear, their first EP for Permanent Vacation. Our picks of a very strong bunch are the rushing and immersive, retro-futurist brilliance of 'Melodies on the Meridian' and the acid flecked, turn-of-the-90s Italian dream house-goes-psychedelic surge of 'Journey To Now-Here', though the whole EP is highly impressive.

Review: The fifth volume in Peppermint Jam's popular "Allstars" EP series hits home hard from the start, as DJ Meme and Brazilian legend Marcos Valle join forces to re-imagine sweaty Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival" as a driving chunk of celebratory house mayhem. Lovebirds is up next with "The Path 2011", a similarly percussive workout that makes great use of steel band melodies and warm, deep disco bass. Matthias "Matty" Helibronn then gives a Teddy Pendergrass classic the re-edit treatment (albeit with the addition of some tasty new drums and a few well-placed filter sweeps), while The Reflex steals the show with an organ-heavy multi-track remix of Mandrill's 1972 funk shuffler "Ape Is High" (here re-named "Ape's Back In Town").

Kuyo (In Everything) (Antony Reale instrumental mix) - (6:19) 122 BPM
Review: The legendary Kerri Chandler and his Kaoz Theory label (ode to that priceless 1998 album) turns in a remix and dub package of Antonio Deep Scarano & Toshi's "Kuyo (In Everything)". For the uninitiated ADS is an Italian house music industry man known for his collaborative streak - hooking up with vocalist Toshi for a second time here. With the Kerri Chandler touch, the duo's infectious single gets a full remix treatment that across the board draws upon the purest of house sentiments, meant for warm and worldly times, taking in '90s new age and piano house with percussion, drum machines and basslines to boot. Chandler of course goes large but not OTT in his vocal and dub mixes, next to a pumping warehouse version by Antony Reale, Pietro Nicosia's clubby tribalisms and Salvatore Oppio's barqoue remake too!

Review: After a collaboration with label staple (and all round German legend) Mousse T recently, Sebastian Doering aka Lovebirds decided to come back to Peppermint Jam with another EP. The Hamburg based producer (and Teardrop label boss) presents the charmingly titled 'New Shit Has Come To Light' which serves up three expressions in timeless deep house - and are as sexy and emotive as you like it! From the sensual late night mood music of "Glove", to the evocative breaks-driven vocal charmer "Da Sixty" and the funky sun-kissed soul power of "Disco Train" closing out this fine EP.

Roy Rosenfeld & Sebastien Lager - "Veetoo" - (8:45) 121 BPM
Honey - (9:14) 122 BPM
Review: Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream bring us a three-tracker by Tel Aviv's Roy Rosenfeld, coming from that place where the boundaries between deep and melodic/progressive house get decidedly blurry. 'Lift Of Love' itself tops a light, rolling tropical groove with constantly evolving synths that are one-part muzak (hence, presumably, the title) to one-part 'Star Trek', while elsewhere 'Veetoo' has the dreamy, floaty feel of Balearic prog and 'Honey' treads similar ground but in a more sunrise-friendly, "the morning after the night before" kinda way. It all makes for very pleasant listening - just add sunshine, sand and a certain Mediterranean island for maximum impact.

Review: Amonita's latest EP is a cloud-walk through enchanting soundscapes and ethereal melodies. With tracks like "Fairy", "Azure", "Secret of Happiness" and "Dream Together" each clocking in at over seven minutes long, the EP showcases Amonita's ability to craft immersive compositions that effortlessly captivate listeners. Glide through a mix of linear grooves, steady percussion lines and holdings strings that glistening deep ambiance, these magical arrangements are delightfully, and playfully, evocative. With touches of tech house that meets tribal house - subtle touches of baroque atmospheres and classicalism thrive throughout - immense instrumental music for the wandering mind.

Review: All Day I Dream's 'Summer Sampler' releases have always been action-packed treats, so it's no surprise that 2023's edition - which appears to be the most expansive to date - is another strong offering. Those who enjoy the imprint's trademark blend of tactile, tech-tinged house grooves, dreamy chords and melody-rich instrumentation will find plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the soaring, trance-inducing builds of Double Touch's 'Should've Known' and the warming, dancing-under-the-stars headiness of Lee Burridge's on-point remix of Luciano's 'The Amazing Lilou', the the deep and trippy wooziness of Lost Desert's 'Kuiki', and the immersive, sunrise-ready deep house bliss of 'Preciosa' by Mass Digital. Review: The "Falling Down EP" marks 8Kays' impressive debut on Watergate Records, showcasing the talents of Ukrainian sound-producer and live act Iryna Shvydka. The EP opens with "Falling Down," a collaborative effort with Buenos Aires-based producer and live act Juan Hansen, resulting in a captivating blend of electronic progressive sounds. The EP takes a different turn with the remix by Dutch duo Colyn & Beswerda, who infuse "Falling Down" with a tougher edge while retaining its melodic intricacies while Chris Avantgarde contributes his own rework with his bold and memorable production style. And to send you off on a cloud of musical bliss, the EP finishes with "Lyra," a solo track by 8Kays herself. Think: floaty, dreamy vibes with these cool, cascading arpeggios that'll leave you feeling all happy and relaxed. Perfect way to end the ride!

Review: While his live appearances are placing him on the radar of ever more enlightened house heads the world over, Kink is showing no signs of slacking on the production front either. The clue is in his name, and as ever there are plenty of subtly shimmying tricks in the Bulgarian mastermind's grooves to keep the stiffest of dancers shaking on the off-beat. "Valentine's Groove" is a masterclass in jazz-inflected deep house, all fuzzy chord stabs and badass bass for the funkiest shape flingers. "Strings" meanwhile reaches for a more emotive feeling, lashing on the Detroit romanticism to a wonderfully bombastic end.

Be Free (Mike Huckaby edit) - (7:04) 121 BPM
Review: Clone Royal Oak's latest outing is a simple idea, beautifully executed. It sees a trio of experienced producers offering up scalpel style reworks of classic cuts from Jovonn's early '89s Goldtone Records stable. Ian Pooley steps up first, delivering a chunky revision of sought-after 1993 cut "Pianos of Gold" that builds energy via a stripped-back, bass-heavy section before unleashing Jovonn's superb organ riffs, glassy-eyed deep house chords and sweaty vocal cut-ups. Next, DJ Deep delivers a snappy and perfectly pitched rearrangement of vibraphone-laden 1992 cut "Show U Love", before Detroit legend Mike Huckaby gets to work on Jovonn's 1991 debut "Be Free", brilliantly utilizing the breezy and soulful vocal on a version that subtly enhances the producer's classic New Jersey deep house original.

Review: It would be fair to say that Studio K7 has pulled off something of a coup in getting Kenny Dixon Jr. to agree to compile and mix the latest installment in the long-running DJ Kicks series. It is, somewhat remarkably, the legendary Detroiter's first commercially available mix set. This triple-vinyl edition features a whopping 19 cuts - all in unmixed form - from the 30 track mix. Musically, it's a blazed, jazzy, soulful and groovy as you'd expect, and contains a mixture of downtempo beats, nu-jazz and hazy house cuts from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dopehead, Peter Digital Orchestra, Nightmares On Wax, Soulful Session and Lady Alma.

The Gino Fontaine - "Revnorev" (Pete Herbert remix) - (7:40) 108 BPM
Review: In which UK scene stalwart Pete Herbert remixes five tracks by other people and one of his own, to predictably fine effect. The EP opens with the understated synth-y throb of 'Pourquoi', before 'Back To Bahia' takes us down a slightly housier path. 'Orange Chika' then takes a left turn into classic Balearic territory - complete, from the two minute mark, with uplifting piano riff - before the remaining three tracks play us out on a more straight-up disco tip. It's all superbly executed - as you'd expect from Herbert - but leading the charge for me is the big, bad funker that is 'Revnorev'.
