Review: The Contort Yourself tradition of electronics pioneers, modern masters and new names continues into CY003. Enrique comes under that latter banner. The Hot Releases alumnus introduces the EP with the piston pounded belligerence of Dissociate. L.I.E.S. and Nation veteran Beau Wanzer continues this stroll into aggression. Weasels is an upturned work of techno. Nuts, bolts and the grisly inner workings are on show for this fast paced floor mangler. Spain's industrial stalwarts Esplendor Geometrico open the flip. From 1988 the grit of the factory floor is carried into Rotor. A touch of the mystical is injected, chants looped through the hypnotic rhythms in this simmering classic. Broken English Club is on hand to rework Rotor into a guttering piece of Electro tainted machine music. If you're hoping for some respite, think again. Prostitutes (Diagonal) closes with the cruel pummelling percussion of Cuyahoga Frankenstein. A brutal, beefy and brilliant EP.

Review: Marking twenty years since Mego first took form as a bastion of experimental electronic music, Fridge Trax Plus is a celebration of the pioneering work of the label founders General Magic and Pita. The original album Fridge Trax involved the placement of microphones within a fridge and then making a twisted and surprisingly funky concoction out of the captured sounds. The Live and Final Fridge album was originally released on Source, and now the two companion releases sit pretty next to each other as a fine example of fearless 90s experimentation worked into a highly listenable and timeless collection.

Review: When it comes to boundary testing noise excursions, Russell Haswell is your man, and here he delivers an edit with a suitably obtuse title to accompany the mammoth 73-minute run through all manner of challenging tones, scrapes and squiggles. Pain Jerk takes a similar if slightly less lengthy approach with a more playful if equally jarring set of sounds pasted together in willfully disorientating formations. It's certainly not for the faint hearted, but there's a whole lot of manic audio to get utterly lost in if your mind is open to the challenging noise within.

Review: Parrish Smith is a relatively new addition to the extended techno world, but the producer is undoubtedly one of our favourite recent additions, particularly for his sensibility to the core of EBM and industrial music. His previous EP, out through Ron Morelli's LIES, was one of the best 12"s to come in 2017 (in our humble opinion), so this new EP for Holland's Dekmantel crew is nothing but vibes for us! The title track, "Sex, Suicide & Speed Metal", blasts out heavy bass-kicks amid swarms of washed out guitars and doom metal references, leaving "Mute" to provide some comfort to the bone-heads, thanks to its noxious bass and drum-machine centricity. "Fall Into Sin" is yet more death and destruction, driven by a blasting wave of detuned electronics and metallic percussion, while "Skins" bangs out a dubwise slice of post-industrial nuttiness - large up, Parrish.

Review: Perhaps best known as The Subliminal Kid or for his role in Roll The Dice, Peder Mannerfelt has equally garnered plenty of praise for his The Swedish Congo Record on Archives Interieures this year. Now he returns with more challenging deconstructions of techno formulas on this self-released EP, which leads in with the abrasive scrape of "Acid Drop". "DB At Holger" is a more patient offering that throws in some tongue-in-cheek samples amongst a minimalistic hum of a production, and "The Limits Of Control" too exercises patience although with a very different sound palette. It's hard to know which way each track will turn next on this wonderfully unpredictable release.

Review: A second collaboration by Perc and Truss has surfaced and it adds to the situational, high intensity techno both are delivering London clubs at the moment. Across eight tracks the two have released as Perc & Truss you can now begin to pinpoint some of the individual elements from both producers. Here it comes through on Truss' straight-laced and hammered-down percussion and the caustic acid lines similarly heard on his MPIA3 alias, particularly "Forever Your Girl". On the Perc side of things, the speakerphone vocal of "Two Hundred" is reminiscent to those used on his Power And The Glory LP, as is the light electrical hum of distortion across the intermittent snares of "Van Der Valk". And if you're after a big old kick drum, look no further than "Judd".

Review: Having already established one sub-label in Perc Trax Ltd, Ali Wells further expands the remit of his Perc operation further with the first release on his Submit label dedicated to experimental music. Arriving with the following mission statement, "Analogue, digital, laptop, modular, field recordings, circuit-bent, vocal, and every sound source is welcome. No format, recording technology, musician, producer or band is outside of the label's horizon," it's clear Submit will have a pretty broad approach, and as debut releases go this is quite the affair. The works of celebrated German industrial act Einsturzende Neubauten the focus of attention here as Perc presents his own take on four tracks from the group's LP Kollaps. The results bear comparison with the hard edged abstracted approach of contemporary Phillitronics (Metasplice, Great Circle) and the battered, primitive electronics of CHBB though the enduring feeling is this EP proves once more how vital Perc is.

Review: The tenth anniversary of Perc Trax has provided its owner Ali 'Perc' Wells with the opportunity to release his first ever commercial mix. Using a lot of his own material as well as some smart selections from the label, including Factory Floor's remix of Forward Strategy Group, Wells acquits himself skillfully. However, it's this collection of unreleased material that really stands out. Veering from Happa and Truss' stomping, distorted techno and the Magnetic North-style kicks of Perc's "Hyperlink" to the frazzled broken beats of Forward Strategy Group and Mick Finesse & Pinion's tracks, it also features the cavernous acid of Drvg Cvltvre's "(I Don't Want To Die In) James Franco's House" and the shock-horror rave stabs of Sawf's "Goves". There's no doubt about it - Perc Trax is celebrating its first decade in typically raucous style.

Review: Recorded between 2000 and 2008, Immerse sees Danny 'Periskop' Kreuzfeldt move between moods and tones with consummate ease. A good portion of the album focuses on eerie, dark ambient - check the spooky mumblings on "Immerse (Component 1)" and the doom-ridden pulses of "Component 3". Surprisingly, the album also has moments of serenity, most audible on the chiming chords of "Component 2" and wispy ambience of "Component 7". However, these are only minor digressions and soon enough Kreuzfeldt is back doing what he excels at, delivering the eerie textures of "Component 9" and the murderous broken beats of "Component 10".

Review: When he's not busy producing ear-shaking industrial techno or corrupted house bangers, Paris' Low Jack appears under his birth name, Philippe Hallais. While this is technically a debut under his real name, we've already gotten a taste of what the talented producer can offer beyond the dancefloor. This album, An American Hero, comes through on Andy Stott's sublime Modern Love and we feel that there couldn't be a better match on our charts this week. Although the large part of these tunes would scare most normal people off any dance piste, there is something unmistakably club-minded about it; the choice of sonics and atmospherics is most certainly on the experimental side of the spectrum, but there is a noticeable movement and pulse-like beat at its foundations. For instance, the likes of "Everything (Good)" or "Angela (Square)" burst out of the speakers with a mind-bending vortex of sounds that somehow find their own kinetic energy and pull you in to a subtle groove. Compared to most left field or ambient albums out there, Hallais has made sure to keep you locked and excited for the whole damn thing. Recommended. Warmly.

Review: If you've ever wondered who runs the magnificent Editions Mego label, you've finally got your answer and you can actually hear their sounds. Pita aka Peter Rehberg is veteran of the experimental electro-acoustic scene, and his earliest work dates back to the mid-1990's; it was only a few years after that when he started his label, originally name simply Mego. Get In is the natural follower to 2008's Get Out, and if you were looking for docile, pale-faced ambient music, then this might be a bit marmite. We absolutely love it, it's the right blend of force and subtlety, and it stands there among the best of Mika Vainio's recent work. As a matter of fact, Pita's airy yet harsh sonics have a lot in common with the whole Sahko label and the Finnish school of noise. Clean, precise, loud and in your face.
