Review: The Downwards label precede the intriguing release of a new album from multi disciplinarian Russell Haswell with this remix release brandishing wildly different reinterpretations of the Coventry based musician's work from William Bennett, Kevin Drumm and label boss Regis. Haswell and Downwards seem like a good fit given the former's long career of boundary pushing music across labels as varied as Editions Mego, Warp Records and Carlos Giffoni's No Fun Productions, while the latter have remained uncompromising in the direction of their release schedule. It's a rare occasion when you can identify a Regis remix as the most accessible contribution to a release, but that's certainly the case here, with the Downwards chief delivering a twitching, loopy techno workout of "Chua Rave," while Whitehouse founding member William Bennett - another former collaborator of Haswell's - has remixed "Harshing" which is quite aptly described by Downwards as a "stereo head f*cking, brain floss session". This is surpassed in the "skin crawling brutal sonics" stakes by the minute remix of the same track from the Chicago-based experimental musician Kevin Drumm.

Review: With just a handful of percussive noise cassettes under their belt for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement have succeeded in finding their own momentum amongst the myriad of glitchy, hissing drone E's governing the best part of the label. "The Plant With Many Faces" is already their third Hospital release in a year and it marks a clear continuation of the imprint's dark but conceptual aesthetic. If it weren't for its comparatively reassuring strand of percussion towering above the swell of growls, "Abaxial Masks With Sockets Closed To Hide The Face When The Destroyer Comes Alive" would be the definition of total doom, but its poignant structure gives the track a point of reference and instead of staring into an abyss of noise, we're guided rather gently by its ominous but irresistibly enticing bassline. "Out Of The Mess Came The Green Devil", on the other hand, loops a blockade of deranged field recordings into a quasi-groove, and the same can be said for "Complex Rituals To Control Anthurium", a similarly marvellous escapade into the evolution of organic sounds. Finally, "Poisonous Spirit Species" morphs from calm to volatile, where sparse trickles of crackle and bang manoeuvre without care through the long and cavernous tunnel of white noise. Another biggie from one of the most interesting labels around.

Review: There are most definitely some dub elements running adrift in this latest selection of dread filled tracks from Hospital Productions' Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, such as on the opener "Upside Down Left Eye" which is a real excursion into the lower frequencies of the sound spectrum. "Undrinkable Water" is as bleak and despairing as you can get for Hospital, whilst "In Honduras Death Caused By Being Chased By Spirits" truly brings out the name of the artist into the limelight, where chirpy but sinister bird noises drop in and out of a chilling sphere of reverb. "The Spirit Wore The Shoes Of The Boy" is a comparatively more beat-led dub excursion and it's one of the highlights, though all of this compelling and challenging journey into the tenebrous mind of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement comes highly recommended.

Review: Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions has been running for donkey's years, continuously shaping the fine lines between abstract experimentation, sound installations and electronica. This is Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement's sixth instalment for the label and as usual, comes courtesy of a generous digital re-release from its original and near impossible to find, cassette format. A haunting wall of noise opens "Spot A Witch By Changes In The Persons Behaviour", a rich concoction of white noise which eventually transforms into a more stable, drone-fuelled dissection. The chillingly named "In New Guinea Police Don't Have The Petrol Money To Search For The Witch Murderers" is a fine example of their objective: to capture situations and reduce them to a musical context - crackling, almost human field recordings guiding the whole 5 minutes. Same goes for "Bodies Of Suspected Witches Are Dumped In The River Or Buried In Toilet Pits", a bizarre alignment between haunted recordings and tape manipulations; and its only on "Sorcery Killings" that the artist gives us anything near a concrete musical arrangement. Otherworldly recordings from the label!

Review: Fresh young upstart Stacey Wilson transmits some appropriately scrubbed-out ideas across the Pacific to Not Not Fun for her first fully-fledged release, crafting a whole album of droning and decaying avant-pop very much in the Maria Minerva vein. There's a touch more warmth at work in the synthesiser parts, as demonstrated on the comforting lullaby of "Thieves", but there's no denying the vocals lie far out of reach. That said, the whole album hits on a more immediate level as the foundational parts of the tracks take hold before the lo-fi aesthetic drowns the edges of the music out.

Review: Roly Porter's recent output finally earned him a place in the big league, and his recent remix of Snow Ghosts on London's Houndstooth was a real step forward for the producer, both artistically and career-wise. His second LP, Third Law, comes through courtesy of New York's excellent Tri Angle label, and the mighty "4101" - released as a single back in Novemeber, paves the way for an album full of suspense and surrealism. This is no job for anyone looking for peace or meditation, but rather one for the more open-minded. "Mass", for instance, unleashes boulders of bass and noise over glitchy half-beats, whereas the tunes like "High Places" sound like the inside of an interstellar cruiser, and the sublime "In System" reminds us of Apex Twin's strand of ambient...a cold, pensive bundle of euphoric energy. Recommended.

Review: Run Dust is a project from Luke Calzonetti, an American artist who is a member of the noise band Child Abuse. Given his background, it's no surprise that In Paradisum describes Supermarche as its most 'macabre' yet. Certainly, there are traces of Calzonetti's noise background throughout, from the screeching vocals and distorted broken beats of "Todd Rundgren's LSD" through the dense tapestry of malfunctioning computer noises that comprises "The Bath" and the sprawling feed back textures of "Dull Conversation". There are other, more atmospheric moments on Supermarche, like the textured soundscape on "Intro" and the lovely chiming bells of " Sincere Crime", but in the main, this is all about bringing the noise.

Review: Osaka's Ryuji Takeuchi runs Local Sound Network, an outlet for fierce (primarily his own) peak time DJ tools. On the Black Tears EP, it doesn't leave much to the imagination; it's all bleak and dystopian techno, just the way we like it! "Tears 1" is a raw and repetitive groove reminiscent of Regis' legendary Gymnastics album in the early nineties; all overdriven rhythm and grumbling Doepfer. The pounding 909 onslaught continues of "Tears 2" with its grating and hypnotic chime melody; it's totally off the chain! "Tears 3" hammers the message home with more bizarre Doepfer squeals, high hats hissing all over the shop like snakes and a body bashing broken beat. Things end on a mysterious note with the dark industrial soundscape of "Tearstain". Not for the faint of heart.
