Review: The wolf and caps lock loving pair known simply as OAKE make a welcome return to Downwards, complementing their stunning debut from earlier this year with a four track EP that is, if anything, even heavier going! Quite where Karl O'Connor found OAKE isn't clear but the Berlin pair fit right in on the current configuration of Downwards alongside the likes of Cut Hands, Kerridge, DVA Damas et al. Whereas OAKE's three track debut Offenbarung was finely balanced between cinematic strings and vocals reminiscent of Coil and a pin-dropping bass-heavy dread shared with kindred spirits Demdike Stare and The Haxan Cloak, Vollstreckung is resolutely darker in execution. See, for example, the serating bass tones of "Sehtohree Diin Chromtas Vehns" and the cacophonous drums of "Tuturden Giit Chreteen Dwe" that both drowning out the more delicate vocals.

Review: Matthew Watt aka Killawatt drops his debut LP on the UK's Osiris Music. Gnarly, psychedelic techno is the name of the game here, and there's a whopping twelve tracks up for grabs. Blending everything from UK bass to dubstep and even drone, Killawatt's particular brand of four-to-the-floor is both singular and caters to just about anyone whose into menacing beats and abstract sonics. We're particularly into the choppy beats on "Spinal Swarm" and the outsider techno rhythm that is "Excessive Hyperbole". This album is absolutely brimming with quality and singularity. More from Mr.Watt, please!

Breaking The Flesh - (5:34) 163 BPM Hot
Last Signal - (3:18) 160 BPM
Review: British techno veteran Oliver Ho has released some fine material as Broken English Club since debuting the alias back in 2014. The English Beach, Ho's second BEC full-length and first for L.I.E.S, is the audio equivalent of a trip to a run-down North Sea coastal resort on a wet Wednesday in November. Full of end-of-days electronics, stripped-back industrial techno, moody minimal wave shufflers and bubbly EBM workouts, it's as authentic a tribute to early '80s electronic experimentalism as you're likely to hear all year. Highlights include the Nitzer Ebb style bounce of "Pylon", the foreboding, desolate electronica of "Rust Ballad", the angry electro moodiness of "Carrion" and the rolling, organ-laden autumnal bliss of "The English Beach".

Review: Believe it or not, but Oz-man Chris Abrahams has been dealing in wayward, left-of-field music since the mid 1980s, proudly offering his piano skills as a base for some of the nuttiest electronic soundscapes to have hit the continent down-under, and the rest of the globe for that matter. He reappears here on his native Room40 with Fluid To The Influence, and ambitious LP that scatters its noisy wings across eight slices of experimentation recalling the American noise tradition set out by labels such as Hanson. It's not all dread and destruction, however, and Abrahams skilfully manages to inject plenty of warmth and peace with his piano over abstract sound surrealism that resides in a world of its own. Recommended.

Review: Second Woman are an American duo comprised of Josh Eustis, who was formerly of Chicago electronica outfit Telefon Tel Aviv and now a touring member of the Downwards affiliated Tropic Of Cancer with sound designer Turk Dietrich. Together they delivered one of 2016's finest moments on their debut self titled album for Spectrum Spools. Their live audio/visual performance also being one of the highlights of 2016's Berlin Atonal festival. Their second album S/V follows in suit, using innovative software synthesis techniques inspired by ASMR sensations, by way of jagged and angular beat experiments, which in particular call to mind the work of Mark Fell under his SND alias. High fidelity adventures in modern electronica on offer here and well worthy of your attention.

Hook (end) - (2:47) 160 BPM
Review: In what's being described as a year of rebirth for Peder Mannerfelt, the Swedish synth specialist has put his previous work as half of Roll The Dice and his housier inclinations under the The Subliminal Kid alias to one side to focus on a new avant garde solo career. This trajectory is geared toward complex sound design and sophisticated synthesis and ahead of the Lines Describing Circles album for Digitalis Recordings, Mannerfelt has created his own platform called Peder Mannerfelt Produktion. The debut release, titled simply EP1, sees the Swede experiment with sonics in a manner that will appeal to fans of Mike Parker, Emptyset and Donato Dozzy, and Raster-Noton's blips and glitches.
