Review: Martin Mamzer AKA Aphreme is a 20-year veteran of the Polish deep and soulful house scene who hails from Katowice, and here he comes to 1 Life with a four-tracker that blurs the lines between deep house, nu-disco and lounge. 'Wanderer's Nostalgia' has echoes of early 90s Italian house labels like Irma and Antima, 'Shelter In My Prayers' treads similar ground but with hints too of broken beat, 'Silesian Pavements' is a little chunkier and hence probably the pick for dancefloor play, while 'After The Storm' plays us out on a dreamy, late-night note. Classy stuff all round.
Review: Obscure Japanese disco outfit The Eastern Gang released two albums on the Invitation label, 1979's 'The Flasher' and 1980's 'Magic Eyes' - and that's about all we (or the internet!) know about them, except that four tracks from the former and the title track from the latter are now being reissued right here. Note the date of those original releases - we're talking quite late in the disco era, so there's a strong Euro influence to the five tracks here, and at times a slight whiff of Boney M-style cheese. One more for the high-camp floors than the serious Italo chin-strokers then, but an enjoyable romp all the same.
Review: Emerging producer from the underground of Greece, Costa Vaya is an artist set on bringing the sounds of the sun and waves to his listeners ears. With tribal percussion and house grooves central to his work, Costa Vaya lines up this EP with mellow-toned keys, tropical notations and high class Chi-Town vibes alongside a bevvy of US house music classicalisms. Each track spills with the warmth and soul of a distant exotica that doesn't deviate too far from the club realm either, and should go some length to bringing palm trees, beaches and mountainous basslines to your next sunset soiree. Life's good.
